Good morning, everyone! Phoenix Woman here, contemplating a bike ride and also how I'm going to get through the weekend without running into HP spoilers.
Yup -- I'm a full-fledged member of the Harry Potter cult. No, I didn't stay up last night at the local bookstores waiting for Book Severus -- erm, I mean Book Seven -- to arrive. My copy of the book hasn't arrived from the publishers yet, and I won't see it until Monday. But I do have an idea of who lives and who dies. But I'll be good and put it all in white font here, for those who would like to hang out without reading my guesses. Don't worry -- you can go ahead and skip to the bottom and post comments without seeing the naughty could-be spoilers. Just don't highlight any of the white space immediately below, okay? (And please no spoilers in the thread!)
Here goes:
Those who live: Harry, Ron (and all the other named Weasleys so far), Hermione, Neville, Lupin, Flitwick, McGonagall, Hagrid, Sprout, Dobby -- and Snape and Draco.
Those who probably don't live: Bunches and bunches. For starters: Voldemort (duh!), Bellatrix, Fenrir, Lucius and Narcissa (yup, Draco gets to see what Harry's gone through most of his life as an orphan), Fleur (sorry, Bill), Wormtail, Luna (this will really hurt), Tonks (this will hurt, but it'll hurt Lupin more), Slughorn, Scrimgeour, and, just because, Umbridge.
There! Now that I'm done spoilering, let's talk about what a neat weekend it's going to be. Gotcher coffee, everyone?

Only Muggles would give it away!
you wouldn’t!!
(yup, i read the spoilers)
Thanks, PW, I didn’t get all that from reading the last 5 pages and the Epilogue this morning before handing the book off to the over-anxious boy this morning.
OT ~ TOO FUNNY!
Some will recall that on July 8, 1947, witnesses claimed that an unidentified object with five aliens aboard crashed onto a sheep and cattle ranch just outside Roswell, New Mexico. This is a well-known incident that many say has long been covered up by the U.S. Air Force and the US government.
However, what you may NOT know is that in the month of March 1948, exactly nine months after that historic day, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and Dan Quayle were all born.
See what happens when aliens breed with sheep? This piece of information may clear up a lot of things.
Hi Phoenix Woman: Is your handle related to the Order of the Phoenix?
Phoenix, I’m sure all the bible-zombies will be happy that there won’t be any more satanic Potter-stuff coming out of Rowland’s fertile brain.
If she had written an ending where babyjeebus had come down and smote Harry and Voldemort alike, into a puddle of deviant liquid, she could have been canonized by the fundies.
Too late now. She’ll have to whimper all the way to the bank. :o)
Reposted from the last thread, but even more appropriate here.
I had to laugh at TexB’s story last night about today’s plans at her house:

We got a free copy because The Boy won a Harry Potter costume contest at the library, but my copy was ordered long ago from a certain on-line book seller. And it has not arrived. Dammit!
Good morning PW, firepups, lurkers & NSA agents.
I commented last night on how impressed all of the FDL lawyers would be with the contract negotiating skills of two teenagers on the day BEFORE a single copy of HP 7 arrives in our household. Written contract. Clauses & schedules & penalties.
My time slot with the book is 2-7 AM.
cleter @ 10
Ours ain’t here yet either.
Very clever, PW. Well done.

Lockhart’s prettier and better at Memory Charms.
TexB @ 11
I saw that as I was catching up this morning, and passed it along above. My first thought, upon seeing your time slot, is that you need a better negotiator.
You could have a loophole, though, if there are clauses in those contracts that allow you to revoke the schedule if certain chores are not completed on time.

I just do not “get” this Harry Potter thing. I tried to read the first one, found it incredibly boring. I prefer Steven King or LOTR.

Wotcher,Phoenix Woman!
I haven’t bought mine yet, because I’m pretty sure my nephews will give me one as a gift tomorrow (I hope)!
My son and I went to see Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix and I couldn’t get over the ‘resemblance’ between Laura Bush & Dolores Umbridge! They had that same spaced out smile while giving the bad news, which is what Laura does when she’s talking about how much her husband needs to have torture ’cause it’s good for the country. Yikes.

no, wait - one month and 2 days later - whew! my parents were odd but now i appreciate them!
When I read “he who must not be named”, I thought that referred to a civil rights case. An 82 yr old doctor in PA claims he was falsely arrested for displaying an anti-war sign at a Bush campaign event in 9/03. The defense lawyers asked the judge to prohibit the plaintiff from mentioning Bush’s name arguing that the identity of GW has no relevance to the claim & shouldn’t be admitted.
Hilarious.

You envy me and I envy Balrog. Balrogsaw Zep live. Damn you Balrog.
The play list for The Black Crowes show came as a surprise. I wasn’t tuned into the fact that Page had hooked up with them and that they were playing Zep tunes. Truth be told, Chris Robinson did well on the vocals but I really would have preferred to hear Robert Plant sing in his prime.
I saw the Crowes without Page a few years later. They’ve got a rocking set list too and Robinson was INTO it. He’s up the energy level and can belt it out.
Well I’ve read the entire book, as has my daughter. I won’t give anything away. However if YOU have read the book, you can see how amazingly WRONG my predictions were by visiting my “Deathly Hallows” guesses page at

Guess Cheney’s rule is ostensibly over and and Bush is ostensibly at the helm again. Given the nature of that chain of command, the poll is still relevant. Just hate to see it close out being so skewed.

more than a bit OT, but an interesting tidbit to consider for our Blue America stalwarts:

Our Blue America candidate for IL-14, Jim Laesch did a good job in ‘06, given he had no help from the DCCC, and is back for a second challenge to win this seat. Could there be a special election in IL-14 before the November 2008 general? That would be so much fun!

[Hi, Julia!]
Not exactly…
Just got back from a great bike ride on a greenway along a creek (creek is very low due to drought). Weather is sunny, breezy and less humid than usual in this part of NC. Then listened to Patrick FitzGerald on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me — he rocked! He did the “Not My Job” segment and he got questions about scooters, just none of them Scooter Libby (segways etc.). Great weekend so far!

Hi Julia!
Yes, those were most excellent shows, especially the night I sat in the front row right under Plant’s microphone stand. Ah, the dry ice fog for ‘No Quarter’, the sweat flying off Page, Bonham’s drum solo, that was a great set of gigs. I went to every single one of them at the Cap Center.

As an archaeologist, i would like to point out, for the record, Neanderthals didn’t actually have pottery. They had nice stone tools, though. Also, we aren’t entirely sure how hairy they were. They may not have been any hairier than we are.
Where is the damned brown truck?

The Harry Potter book, we have on request from the library. Number two thousand something on the list. We did a number of Harry Potter themed designs for Cafe Press, trying to be careful of copyright. But yesterday a boatload of designs were taken down, including anything with the word “muggle”, which I thought for sure was in the public domain.

Bill O’Reilly: September 10, 1949
Rush Limbaugh: January 12, 1951

Turning Oversight into Action
Rep. Waxman to Introduce the Surgeon General Independence Act
Thursday, July 12, 2007
Today Rep. Henry A. Waxman announced his plans to introduce legislation to protect the Surgeon General from political interference. On Tuesday, the Oversight Committee held a hearing at which three former Surgeons General testified regarding the damage the political interference has done to the ability of the Surgeon General to speak openly and honestly with the American public about threats to public health.
“What we learned at this hearing is that the Office of the Surgeon General is in crisis,” said Rep. Waxman. “Political interference is compromising the independence of the Office. On key public health issues the Surgeon General has been muzzled. This problem will not solve itself.” link
Any Californians out there who would vote for Waxman for Senate?

Many lawyers of my generation have a book on the shelf called “Black’s Law Dictionary.” In the edition I had there was a definition of “Mariguana” (sic) The definition refered to Cannabis Indica and gave two “street terms” for the drug. And they are
…… drumroll, please…………..
“Mooter” and “Muggles.”
The dictionary identified the street term for “addicts” as “Muggles-heads.”
P.S. I once had an African-American client who saw the book on my shelf and took offense at the notion that there was a different lexicon for persons of her race.
I went out to the local grocery store this morning and they had the book for 40 percent off, sooo,my 13 yr old is out in the hammock with one of the cats reading. Sometimes being in a hurry for something makes you have to wait longer,no pre-orders and such here.
We wanted to go to an HP party last night, but with the husband having surgery yesterday,it wasn’t happening(he’s home,in pain, but otherwise fine).I think the whole family is a bit punch drunk from lack of sleep today, lol. Even the cats are less springy than usual.
Gotta go already. Must wash the Pick-up-a-sauros.
From CNN online, they report that:
“Afterward, the president played with his Scottish terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley, Stanzel said. He planned to have lunch at Camp David and have briefings with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, and planned to take a bicycle ride Saturday afternoon…..
….Cheney, meanwhile, spent the morning at his home on Maryland’s eastern shore, reading and playing with his dogs, Stanzel said. Nothing occurred that required him to take official action as president before Bush reclaimed presidential power.”
Just thought it was amusing.

Think such a ticket has NO chance. Heard Thompson give a speech. He sounded totally disengaged. Word is, that’s why he hasn’t announced yet. And any ticket with a Bush on it would go down in flames. Might be fun to have Jeb lose FL, though.
My older son read all the previous books this summer and just got the latest one last night.

We had the same exact thoughts. I saw the movie yesterday. After about the 3rd scene with Dolores Umbridge, I leaned over to my friend, Aaron and said She looks just like Laura Bush, and he busted up laughing.
I guess I wasn’t the only one to think so, huh?

The Bush Dynasty is dead! Thompson is the Chenyites last chance to hold onto power, I think they fear Guiliani.
Oh goodness. The mailman arrived, no Harry in hand. We chalked it up to chosing the Super Saver deliver option on Amazon. So we ventured out to the local diner for breakfast.
We got back to find a notice for a missed delivery - sender’s name “Harry Potter”.
Ugh. Looks like the Post Office dispatched a squandron of owls just for this book’s speedy transport.
Bollocks.

As a NYer, I’d say we have nothing to fear from Guiliani as the R candidate. And his “foreign policy” pronouncements are incomprehensible once he has to stop saying 9/11 9/11 9/11. I think he really does not understand what’s going on in the Middle East.
In fact (from memory), something like 60% of Rs are dissatisfied with all of their prez candidates; the figurefor Ds is something like 30%. And Thompson was included in “none of the above” iirc.
