In case you didn't already know, today is Blogosphere Day. As long-time readers are aware, we do candidate support every week here -- in our Blue America series on Saturdays and also periodically as we can squeeze in the interviews and chats. Raising money to support progressive candidates who support our values is important. So is making certain that they hear from regular folks across the country, and not just political consultants and lobbyists. And our Blue America series tries to do just that -- giving all of you an opportunity to interact with and question the folks who want to lead our nation.
So, what is Blogosphere Day? I cannot better describe what it means than Howie did last year, so I'm not even going to try. Take it away, Howie:
Citizens who really want a change need to take matters into their own hands. I want to announce today that Down With Tyranny, Firedoglake and Crooks and Liars have officially combined our individual Act Blue pages into The Blue America Communities, the 5th biggest Act Blue page in the U.S. Our purpose: to elect grassroots progressives and populists to Congress. Frankly, I hope every Republican is defeated-- remember, the best Republican is worse than the worst Democrat-- but fighting that battle isn't the job we have set out to accomplish. If you didn't read David Sirota's brilliant new book, HOSTILE TAKE OVER, you ought to. Sirota is uncompromising in pointing out how most of the careerist political class are nothing but high priced hookers for Big Business. Are the Republicans worse? Sure. But give slimy Democrats like Emanuel a shot at power for a few years and watch the tables turn.
No, we're not trying to elect any Democrat anywhere to anything-- though it's not a bad goal; we're trying to find under the radar progressives and populists, supported by grassroots Democrats like ourselves. These are men and women who are running because they believe they can make America better.
We did quite well with our Blue America candidates in the last election cycle. And thus far, we're in the top ten of candidate donations on Act Blue for our Blue America group. (I like to think it's partially because Digby has added herself to our merry band of progressive bandits against the corrupt establishment, but I digress...) As Digby said:
This is how you create a majority party, my friends. You make people believe in the party and support them even when they are not immediately "winners" by creating a feeling of solidarity. You make it feel good to be a Democrat again.
Klein called on his pals in the music industry, the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Ricki Lee Jones, and put together a jingle that could be used by candidates all over the country for free and which they adapted for each candidate who wanted to use it. Then they raised money to put it on the radio and the web. It's catchy and fun and gets right to the main question of this election --- "have you had enough?" And whether or not it made a difference in these individual races (it probably did) it certainly gave all these campaigns a lift and an identity and a belief that it was worth it to spend all this time and energy working to get Democrats elected even when it seemed hopeless --- which we now know is something you should never assume.
So, hats off to the Blue America Team, particularly its hardest worker and leading visionary, Howie Klein, who didn't wait for the party to do something and didn't whine about what they weren't doing --- they just went out and did it.
Howie is a genius, a whiz at the electoral numbers, and a peach of a man. He works his ass off for Blue America, and it shows. So today I'm asking you to pick a Blue America candidate or two -- or the Blue America PAC -- and chip in a little. If you don't have the change to add to the Blue America kitty, no sweat -- just pick a local candidate and volunteer to make some calls or help address postcards -- every little bit helps.
You can also listen in to Finifinito's Meet the Bloggers show where the topic will be Blogosphere Day and there will be some discussion of our Blue America work. You can call in and talk with Fini and his guests -- including a special FDL guest -- the dial in number is (718) 508-9856 and the show will run from 7-8pm EDT/4-5pm PDT. (You can listen here.) It's a great time to call in and talk about what being an active citizen has meant to you and your community.
Whatever it is today, do something to help us keep turning America blue.
For Howie and all of his hard work. And for the sake of this wonderful nation of ours which could use a few more beacons of liberty and justice in the power chairs. Thanks so much for all of your support for Blue America.

I’m glad to have participated in a few Blue America Saturdays…
Happy Blogosphere Day everyone!

Howie!!!!
You’re doing great work.
Thanks for keeping us posted and giving the reminders.

well, i don’t “believe in the party” (the democratic party).
but i do believe in blue america and i trust howie klein.
i’m in - only wish it could be more.
And for my favorite (Democrat organizer) cousin in the Lone Star State, this is for you, dearest. I’ll see you tonight. I have some ideas:

Biodun @ 4
Oh, lordy, you are SO lucky. I’m in MN CD2, where John Kline represents. . . .George Bush!
I already picked Darcy Burner and Donna Edwards those Saturdays. My own critter’s (Keith Ellison’s) seat should be safe for 2008, as long as he doesn’t make any more comments like this one.
The header on a letter I got the other day:
Democratic Party 2007 Annual Fund Drive
Before you ask, I gave them no money. It’s from the DCCC. (Insert mumbled profanity of your choice before ‘DCCC’.)
As if we didn’t have enough reasons to chip in, Lou Costello in the last thread provides a link to the “thinking” at Faux Business.
Rich Karlgaard, Forbes Publisher, grew up in North Dakota, so I was curious to follow the link. To hear and see him blithely dismiss 3600 soldiers’ deaths as trivial “human capital” compared to other wars and after all these guys are volunteers compared to the 9/11 people who died in an hour….
I guess that would be your crowd these days, Karlgaard. While the 3600 soldiers, a lot of those folks were your grade school classmates and the small town retailers and EMTs and cops who should be home in ND living their lives.
Well, you may be part of the uber-class now, but you’re not ready for prime time. Shame on you.
Here’s one reason, inter alia, that we need to make more of Congress as blue as possible in 2008. From Sid Blumenthal in Salon today:
Go Blue America!
Now for my OT POST!!
Relevant to the last thread, my letter to the NYT (read to the end for the Judy Miller bit):
Dear NYT Editors,
I find your decision to publish a review containing details of the forthcoming Harry Potter book to be inconceivably horrid. If you had to spoil things for millions you could have at least given them a warning so that it was their choice whether or not to read the article. As it is, reading online one is suddenly confronted with unwanted details.
Very disappointing behavior for such a venerable paper, but of course, you also present Judith Miller’s fluff pieces for the Bush administration as worthy journalism, so I suppose no one should be surprised at this latest gaffe.
“…remember, the best Republican is worse than the worst Democrat…”
If one is going to say something stupid, make sure it’s so humorous that the Rethuglicans can’t spin it into making it sound like we’re all a bunch of DFHs. Does Howie really think that William Jefferson (or even Rahm Emmanuel, as he later pillories) is a better man than Chuck Hagel, for instance? Of course not. Hey, I want all the Rethugs to lose too, but what Howie said is going to end up on the locker room wall at the RNC so everyone can see how insane those damn hippies are.
Aargh. You’re a good man, Howie. Just get a proofreader. I’ll have some coffee and I’ll feel better soon.
Here in Iowa 4, Selden Spencer is taking another run at Republiclone Tom Latham. He had a late start last time and very little money, but still had our eminent congresscritter sweating at the end. The DCCC is even making noises about helping Selden this time, which Rahm & Co. did not do at all, (and which I continue to point out to callers from the DCCC when they want cash from me).
In Iowa, we now have three Dems in the House: Boswell, Braley and Loebsack. Boswell was the lone Dem for a long time, but Loebsack defeated Jim Leach, and Braley won Nussle’s seat when Nussle ran for governor [and lost, huzzah]. If Spencer can take down Latham, that leaves Steve King, R-The Planet Mars, whose district is unlikely to vote Democratic in our lifetimes.
I celebrate the day by sending Spencer $100.
A progressive Dem candidate in my district to whom I made a contribution said on his blog that he received a check from ActBlue for something like 25 cents or something ridiculous. I thought he seemed like a decent candidate but of course he was beaten out by the Republican incumbent.
I was sorry to hear this. I guess there’s only so much to spread around. And maybe ActBlue wasn’t as thrilled with him as some other candidates. But if that’s the case, why insult the man by sending him a check for a few cents? I’m confused.
Christy, is Nick J. Rahall your representative?
Here’s another reason for more blue America in 2008, this time from Glenn Greenwald in Salon today:
Petraeus–Dame Judith Miller’s dear friend–to tie into topic of last thread.
1,582 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Biodun and the Firepup Patriots:
We have a little different problem here in western Wisconsin, we have a full-blown corporate Blue Dog named Ron Kind who owns this district because the Democratic Party structure is so fossilized and corrupted and the district has been so gerrymandered that it stretches almost the entire length of the state on the west side. I would think that this is a situation in which Blue America could be effective…if a viable progressive candidate could be found with a local base of support, willing to mount a primary challenge maybe Blue America could provide the funds to at least put the fear of God and the Democratic base into this Rahm Emmanuel corporate shill.

Ugh - John Kline! What a loss to not have Coleen Rowley instead!
I am in MN 03 - Jim Ramstad. Disgusting. He used to be ‘moderate’ - but has been in Bush’s back pocket for 6 years. He is hard to get rid of, because most people don’t realize how he has changed. Wendy Wilde gave him a good fight, but got in late. I wonder who will run against him this time?
Slightly OT, but it ties in with the press/politics theme…..:)
How Murdoch had a hotline to the PM in the run-up to Iraq war
By Andrew Grice, Political Editor
Published: 19 July 2007
Tony Blair had three conversations with the media magnate Rupert Murdoch in the nine days before the start of the Iraq war, the Government has disclosed.
Details of the former prime minister’s contacts with Mr Murdoch have been released under the Freedom of Information Act. After trying to block disclosure for four years, the Government backed down in a surprise change of heart the day after Mr Blair resigned last month.

I’ll be donating to NC candidates; Dog knows, there’s some thugs that need to be put out of our misery. We *did* get rid of Taylor last year but what we got in Schuler ain’t a whole heck of a lot better, other than he’s got a “D” after his name. ;-(
The objective in this house is to get rid of the Republicans in 2008. To this end we are going to support the nominee of our party.
And Lahoma agrees. And so…well, that takes care of it.
ActBlue.com is a huge blessing for progressive candidates; it makes online donations a piece of cake compared to navigating all the other issues of gathering donations via PayPal or Amazon Honors or other methodologies.
(I’m up to my ears in this stuff for a state house candidate right now, learning about this stuff the hard way, pulling my hair out trying to get all the ducks in a row.)
And a progressive PAC like Blue America also makes it so much easier to ensure quality candidates get elected when you don’t know enough about the district or the candidate. If you trust the Blue America Communities, you can rest assured that good folks have your back.
Would someone point to a list of how the “blue america” candidates have been doing? which have done what they have said, and which have raised their voices and middle fingers to those of us that supported them?
Not enough care was used in selecting the last ones. We have had some real scum use it for their own gain. We should probably consider allowing the scum to rise to the top on their own. Crap that is better than other crap is crap. crap is only worth recycling to create something new. It is not a phoenix.
Schuler, Reyes, Webb. Folks that have voted for the continuation of war…the hiding of criminal activity… I don’t mean to be overly critical, but we need to point an extremely strong microscope on any of these people, and be sure they are in fact people. Mr. Webb worked for Reagan and has soiled himself to vote for continuation of a war he wanted to end according to his campaign platform. His bill to bring rest to the military is probably a good thing, but he knew it wasn’t going to get a vote. It also smacks of a personal choice because of his son. I still hold some respect for him, but it is a point off the bottom, not the top.
Remember, Israeli officers are the last off the field of battle. their personnel get to go before them. get the picture? We don’t have any standards by comparison. We don’t have any serving military personnel that will stand up and tell the crime family that they won’t commit any further war crimes. So bullshit on these active military leaders. They are lying, and we no longer care that their “protocol” and “chain of command” is held in tact. It is time to break this conspiracy and end it. What is a coward in these people’s minds?
I wonder if Howie might give his opinion on Ron Shepston’s candidacy in CA-42 against Gary Miller. Shepston sounds like he might be pretty progressive and has good credentials and enthusiasm to win against Miller. The district is on the hinterlands of LA and Orange County, so it might be tough. But the demographics there are changing quickly.

Whoever is the pick of my party in 2008 needs to understand that if they don’t do the job, they will be dealt with harshly.
KathieinMN @ 26
You know, I am complicit in the mything. I have believed that Ramstad was/is as good as it gets, Republican-wise. And like others, have likened him to principled Repubs of old (I know — it’s an oxymoron now) like (U.S. Rep Bill) Frenzel and (U.S. Rep Dave) Durenberger.
Another one bites the dust, eh?
oldtree,
I strongly disagree with your assessment of Senator Webb. He opposed the Iraq war before it began, publicly and in writing. He continues to oppose it and is working with others in the Senate to bring it to an end.
If you listen to some of the other senators they are starting to use his exact phrases about regionwide negotiations etc.
He appeared just this past Sunday on Meet the Press and gave strong arguments for getting out of Iraq and slipped in a real zinger against Lieberman at the same time.
Moreover, he is the point man for keeping us out of the next catastrophe in Iran.
There are sellouts in Congress but Senator Webb is definitely not on the list in my opinion.
The officials were expected to make the case that some progress has been made in Iraq since Bush ordered the deployment of some 30,000 extra troops earlier this year. The officials also were expected to argue it is too early to tell whether the strategy is working, and that members of Congress should hold off on demanding change until at least September.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19844224/
Paul Wellstone’s Senate seat is currently occupied by the oily, odious chameleon, Norm Coleman. I know it’s pointless to lament the past, but nearly every day as this whole BushCo monstrosity unfolds, I find myself missing Paul and wondering in whom his spirit now moves.

Question: Is there a blog or blogs which focus on domestic policy? I am on a hunt for health, education, labor, transportation, energy, economics, housing - all of the quality of life issues, if you will.
barbara @ 37
In 2009, Al Franken will be your new senator.
we gotta a new Dem candidate in the CA-42nd, Ron Shepston. He appears to be netroots (via DKos).
I’m outta the area right now or I’d go to meet him at a DL in my area… anyone know anything about this guy?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 39
OKK!! Are you the one???
Happy Blue Blogosphere Day, Howie! - and Redd!
Great subject, as tomorrow afternoon, I’m sitting down with Diane Benson, who ran against Don the Rabid Mink Young, getting real close, and is the only candidate to file for that seat - our sole Alaska house seat - so far. We’re going to be creating an Act Blue account for her.
In the 2006 race, egregious set up a Diane Benson page which raised a lot of money, considering especially that egregious did it out of her giant, sweet heart, spontaneously, without co-oordinating it with the campaign. {{{{egregious}}}}
This is such an important program, especially for a progressive person like Diane Benson, who now that she’s raised the scent of blood around Don’s wounded carcass, has drawn Dem pols from their creaky Alaska machine - it has been out of power up here now for over 18 years - who are sneakily saying they’ll “support Diane equally along with the other candidates until the primary,” while making smeary comments about her in private. These are old-school oil politics Dems who make Rahm Emanuel look like Howard Dean in comparison, so we need to help Diane.
More when we get her set up. Thanks, again, Blue America!
barbara @ 37
A bunch of us MN DFLers will be working hard to get this slimeball and turncoat Coleman out in 2008. (I personally will sign up to work for Franken this fall.) Some of us usually get together downtown Mpls. Maybe you can join us next time.

It does get discussed here — but unless, and until, the illegal occupation of Iraq ends, there’s going to be very little money for domestic policies.
Didn’t you hear this morning’s news? Bush is going to veto a bi-partisan bill for health insurance for children and ask for $80 billion more for Iraq…

Ed*ard Teller,
Thank you for your kind words. I saw great potential in Diane Benson and just jumped in with both feet.
Looking forward to being an early contributor and fundraiser for her ‘08 campaign once her ActBlue page goes up [hint, hint] :)
There was a quote she had in the newspaper, maybe you remember it, when asked if all she had was a dream [wing?] and a prayer. She said yes, but it was a big dream and a big prayer. I was really moved to action by her stepping out on faith like that.
We need to find progressives to nominate for ‘08. The time for that is NOW. If you firepups don’t have a progressive running for Congress, start asking around to find someone good.
Take action!!
Mad Dogs @ 51
Ditto all the way! He’s a turncoat in the Lieberman tradition and a shameful opportunist. There’s not an honest bone in that man’s body.
egregious @ 41
oRY a si yu
And a very good morning to you! ;0)
The math professor who is running in IL (Skokie, etc), who was a guest at FDL Blue America two Saturdays ago, I forget his name now, his page also needs to go up on ActBlue. He was a guest with his wife. Very impressive guy, as I recall.
Howie: Are you at the Lake?
barbara @ 34
I know, Barbara - I used to vote for Ramstad (back in the good ole days when there were Frenzel, Durenberger etc.). But I started tracking his votes about 4 years ago - and he was voting against everything we stand for. I would write him, and always get a letter back, explaining his turncoat votes. I believe he is now voting 94% with Bush! I don’t know how we can get rid of him without a strong candidate starting to campaign NOW!
My personal motto concocted back in the 70s, which I’ve seen no reason to change:
“Life is too short to vote Republican.”
OldCoastie @ 45
I read some of the stuff he has posted at Dkos, and he seems to be well informed and properly concerned. Apparently the guy who blogs as MajorDanby at Dkos is helping with Ron’s campaign — I’ve generally like the stuff that he has posted.
Thanks to everyone who put up with my comments all week about this morning’s (just concluded) hearing regarding S.1634 and the need to support senators calling for reform in the Marianas.
Thanks especially to Selise.
Diane Benson and Al Franken get it. Too bad they’re not in office already. This problem would be solved.
behindthefall @ 60
The trick now is to get progressives in control of the Democratic party rather than permitting the DLC to make it “Republican lite.”
Biodun @ 48
Hey, Biodun - keep me in the loop! I couldn’t meet with you at the one time I knew about because of school - but if you meet in August I am sure I could make it - and maybe Mondays or Fridays during the school year! We have to get Franken in! (I still have my Wellstone lawn sign. )-: )
Kathie
Dover Bitch @ 62
thanks for keeping our attention on it!
KathieinMN @ 59
94% with Bush. So he is a moderate Republican after all. *g*
It is July 2007. One year and counting. There is not yet a viable candidate in CD2 to take on John Kline. And this is not just a Minnesota issue. This has national implications because:
(1) Kline carries Bush’s water.
(2) Rumors begin to surface about this time each election cycle that Kline will not run again, which gives rise to the possibility of someone even worse (think Pat Anderson Awada for starters).
(3) We desperately need to reclaim this seat that was ably filled by Dem Bill Luther.
Until someone surfaces, I’m casting my lot with Tim Walz, whose district I’m not in.
Dover Bitch @ 62
Thanks for your leadership on this, Dover Bitch. Slavery and forced abortions on American soil, I’m so proud.
This is all Abramoff connected. Lot of interconnected threads to pull here.
Make everyday Blogosphere Day. Get one person you know per week off the Conglomerate Media teat, and make blogs like FDL their main source for news.
Oh, and contribute to FDL while you’re at it!
I write my congressman and senators and rarely get a reply, is this normal?
egregious @ 35
Ditto, Egregious!

Dover Bitch!
Thanks SO much for help on the CNMI
laborslavery issues. I tried explaining what’s going on there and how awful it is to the Dem machine pols here, and they acted like they could care. But Diane Benson, being a woman of color GETS IT, and is learning from you, from Dengre and other Pacific Islanders here in Alaska with whom she’s come into contact.I’m checking your site every day this week. The webcast icon at the Senate Energy and Natural Resources page isn’t on, at least for me, right now.
egregious @ 67
No kidding. Here’s a letter written by the CNMI governor Benigno Fitial, who testified in today’s hearing to prevent the Senate from acting.
egregious @ 35
wholeheartedly agree with every word, Egregious. Webb is that absolute ultimate rarity in Washington — a man of integrity and conviction — NOT a politician.
Dover Bitch @ 62
I knew nothing of what was happening there (and nothing about Abramoff) until I read Franken’s book, The Truth (with Jokes). He also covered that stuff on his Air America program.
Ed*ard Teller @ 73
Thanks so much. The hearing ended a little while ago. Hopefully they’ll put up an archive link. To be perfectly honest, it’s not the most exciting hearing in history. The good news delivered in it was that a similar, maybe better, bill was introduced in the House.
oddmommy @ 75
remember when he gave the Democratic response to The State of the Union speech
OT - Sorry… cant find any info, and, but of course, FDL is THE most informed/informing site for the poli-legal stuff I’ve seen… isn’t today the day ? Shouldn’t one Former White House Counsel and Former Supreme Court Nominee be expecting a visit from the Sergeant at Arms today ??
Dover Bitch @ 74
Dover Bitch—
Can you give us a sense of what happened in the hearings this morning? Thanks for all you are doing on this important issue.

I think Biodun and Balrog are the ones who plan to get together. I accidentally imbedded my reply in Biodun’s message. The last paragraph above was his not mine. (-:
[Mod: already fixed it for you :) ]
NinjaGoat @ 72
In a nutshell, if the Bush’s henchman, the Secretary of the Treasury, chooses to think that you might pose a risk to “reconstruction efforts in Iraq,” he can, without prior notice, sieze and dispose of everything you’ve got. And there ain’t nothing you can do about it, because you are a subject of the Unitary Executive.
In other words, our Unitary Executive is suspending the due-process clause of the Bill of Rights.
KathieinMN @ 64 and barbara @ 71:
Gotcha. My own linkie is also available to anyone.
Elliott @ 78
He tossed the one Harry Reid wrote for him. And you see the fire in what Webb wrote instead. Democrats: take notice!
The view here is that we are not going to find the perfect candidate to be the next Democratic president. But that’s okay.
egregious @ 84
If you haven’t yet, it’s worth reading his prepared statement from the other night. Not your canned political speech. Would like to hear him deliver those remarks.

NinjaGoat @ 72
You know, I’ve been following this stuff now for about two days. What does it all mean? Can fascism really be in the wings here? What the hell is BushCo trying to pull? Please say it ain’t so. Please say it ain’t so. (Not a typo.)
barbara @ 46
I don’t think I can come close to Mr. Wellstone. Thanks for the compliment. Makes my day. ;0)
Reply from HoJoe on SA2022 (I phoned, I wrote.)
Isn’t this outdated? I though S.185>SA2022 passed the committee (as per BobGeiger) And why does he not mention Democrat co-sponsor Leahy? I guess we constituents should be greatful he responds at all.
egregious @ 84
oh man, I LOVED that speech.
That is a word I very rarely use in this sort of context.
Biodun @ 87
It means “kiss the fifth amendment goodbye.” See #82.
