. I like that the DCCC's Chris VanHollen is over at Daily Kos calling out Republican House members who are all talk when they posture about challenging Bush and his vanity war. They're encouraging local blogs to stay on these dishonest war pigs who tell one thing to voters and then don't want to risk being the target of a Presidential tantrum when they actually cast their votes (and I nominate MyLeftNutmeg). I think that's a very healthy collaboration being nurtured between the DCCC and local bloggers.
. Sweet Jesus I hate Joe Lieberman too. And don't get me started on how the Senate unanimously stood behind Dick Cheney's bitch and took us one step further to war with Iran. What the hell was that?
. Speaking of HoJo, his BFF Chris Shays got the crap kicked out of him when it came to fundraising in the last quarter. Shays raised $280K to Jim Himes' $352K. Jim Himes (photo) is a true progressive who will be visiting us on Blue America later this month. It's early but it bodes well for Himes' willingness to work hard because Shays is a dinosaur but he's an entrenched dinosaur. It will be a pure delight to get behind a great candidate who has what it takes to beat him.
. And finally, our good friend and former content judge Charles P. Pierce is a regular panelist on the NPR quiz show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. He writes:
One of the segments is called Not My Job, in which famous people come on -- Michael Moore was on a couple weeks ago. Obama brought down the house one evening, and Elizabeth Edwards charmed us all -- and answer questions in areas far beyond their expertise.
Next Thursday evening, Wait Wait is doing a live show for free at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park in Chicago. The Not My Job guest is....wait for it... Patrick Fitzgerald. As far as I know, this is the first time he's going to be in front of a microphone in the past two years where he wasn't indicting someone.
Details are not up yet but when they are they will be here.

Ooh! Ooh!
I got here first!
Okay, no I didn’t.
Hi TRex! My zeds are always for Jane. *g*
Mentioning Lieberman (above) stirs my pot. I want Lieberman dealt with! Harry.
Pat Fitzgerald on “Not My Job?” THAT will be a hoot.
That’s almost enough to get me to listen to NPR that night.
Nitpicking: I think you want the close-quote after ‘Civics’, not after Alex. Where it is now, it puts both Alex and the hundred dollars in the question.
mc @ 7
Sure hope there will be a video here, there and everywhere. Sounds like a great warm up to YKos in early August.
TRex @ 4

Damn, it’s always good when you’re feeling well and have your snark on!
FITZ!
Why wait?
OT, but Kobe isn’t particularly happy that Mutant Poodle’s poodle is now the “kayacking poodle” in the FDL Groups logo photo but them’s the breaks.
So let’s see if Warner and Lugar aren’t just talking outta their arses:
“WASHINGTON — Two prominent Senate Republicans have drafted legislation that would require President Bush to come up with a plan by mid-October to dramatically narrow the mission of U.S. troops in Iraq.
The legislation, which represents a sharp challenge to Bush, was put forward Friday by Sens. John Warner and Richard Lugar, and it came as the Pentagon acknowledged that a decreasing number of Iraqi army battalions are able to operate independently of U.S. troops.”

Apparently O’Reilly is off the reservation, also. Does this mean they’ve lost FOX?
Hi Jane. Sure sounds like you are in fine spirits. Anytime Fitz makes an appearance, I’m there! well, not literally. Can hardly wait.
Iraqi government insists they are taking off the month of August despite WH pressure according to a CSpan banner just now.
via DKos:
Wait, Wait with Fitz? That’s a must!
Just got my 15 minutes of fame by revealing this on local radio.
“[T]he Committee wrote to White House Counsel Fred Fielding seeking ‘all documents received or generated by any official in the Executive Office of the President’ relating to Corporal Tillman’s death,” noted a press release from the Committee.
But the White House has apparently again invoked its executive privilege to hold up the documents sought by Waxman and Ranking Minority member Tom Davis (R-VA).
Heaven help me, and don’t mention this to my wife (yet), but I just actually ordered a case of 1,000 of those little three-legged plastic pizza-protector “tables.”
I figure I’ll print out the word Impeachment on sticky labels, slap them on the tables, and send 535 to Nancy P and 100 to Harry R.
Or something like that.
Suggestions welcome.
EPU’d:
I like Mark Kleiman’s idea that, rather screw around with the likes of Miers or Taylor, Congess should subpoena Shooter. After all, since the VP’s office “isn’t part of the executive branch”, he’s not protected by executive privilege.
newspaperbrat @ 16
wish the WH would take off the month of August. And all months thereafter.
For Lahoma. Got your FB. I’ll see you in Lawton late tonight. I’ll follow you to Tahlequah. I know you are reading this. We will talk about politics and other things. And see the people.

Well, last time they did that we lost New Orleans. :-(

Vice President Richard Cheney is the President of the Senate of the United States per the Constitution of the United States.
The Senate has oversight responsibility for itself. No separation of powers issues here.
Get it, Dick?

Last weekend Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me did a best-of show, and one of the segments was Justice Breyer. He was awesomely witty and the panelists were hilarious. The highlight was Paula Poundstone’s incredulity that Justice Breyer bought his own robe and that it’s a synthetic in answer to her question about lint problems. The whole panel was wondering who sells Supreme Court Justice robes off the rack. Good stuff.
newspaperbrat @ 16
Oh good! I’d been praying they’d be stupid enough to do that. Can you imagine how that’s going to play to Joe Six-Pack?
mc @ 14
They’re throwing Bush a lifeline. In September Petraus will announce Al Quaeda is on the run in Iraq. Bush will declare victory. A lot of noise will be made about the troops “new” mission, but we will occupy Iraq until 3008. Bush will pretend he’s a hero. 28% will believe it.
mc @ 14
What’s O’Reilly done? Heard something this morning but never found out what his rant was about.
Jane Hamsher @ 13
perhaps, but wait till it becomes known that Kobe is auditioning for a role in a Paddle Chayefsky play.
puppethead @ 28
That sounds funny. But as usual, the Republican reality is funnier than the jokes. Recall that Scalia had gold stripes sewed on his robe for the impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton. He was inspired by a judge he saw in a production of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. I kid you not!
Let’s play “Not My Job”:
Fitz: what is “indict POTUS and VPOTUS?”
Correct! That job properly belongs to the House of Representatives.

If I were in Baghdad in 120-degree (or more!) heat, I’d be wanting to take the month off, too. (Anything much over 110F is pretty difficult, dry heat or not.)

Isn’t August when W clears brush at Crawford?
And if you’re talking about being mentally present, W is never there.
The Wait Wait podcast causes me to embarrass myself on the Metra commuter train weekly.
I have never gotten around to attending a taping, but this is a must see event.

Tony Snow said it was 130 today in Baghdad.
Why not give the troops a month off, too?

For a chance to view a Real Joe Lieberman Minion in it’s natural habitat, go to the Wikipedia “Connecticut for Lieberman” or the “John Orman” pages, and see the destruction wraught by one SKorchin.
It’s taken a village to bring this caged beast to his knees (but it’s been worth every second).
Gen’l Peter Pace giving DOD briefing on C-Span2 today. I thought he was shit-canned.

Chief Justice Rehnquist, to be precise, not Scalia. (And for the curious, it was the operetta “Iolanthe”. Not “Pirates of Penzance” even though the impeachment was a farce.) It was definitely goofy. And considering the stories that came out after his death, I think Rehnquist might not have had his full faculties at the time.
i called my senators again today to ask for an explaination of their vote for senator lieberman’s iran amendment.
senator kerry’s office told me i could submit an request for one on his webpage.
arrrrgh.

House Judiciary: We “Insist” Miers Comply With Subpoena
By Laura McGann - July 13, 2007, 5:00 PM
Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-MI) warned Harriet Miers’ attorney today that the former White House counsel will risk contempt proceedings unless she complies with a committee-issued subpoena for testimony.
www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/003683.php
She’s in contempt now…I don’t get it. I am beginning to think the Dems have counted votes and there aren’t enough to get a contempt citation from the full House. If that is the situation, then we are screwed.
Rehnquist, of course. Stupid me.
Pirates of Penzance doesn’t even have a judge.
Iolanthe deals with commutation and pardon.
newspaperbrat @ 16
Perhaps these guys know something we don’t.
P J Evans @ 35
Agreed! But it still isn’t going to play well on this side of the Pond. It boils down to “our troops are bleeding and dying, and the Iraqi government’s on vacation. We didn’t send our troops over there to die for that…”
Oklahoma kiddo @ 48
Scary. Scary for our troops.
From the Iraqi government to Goerge.

Irai parliament taking a vacation because it’s too darn hot.
Hmmm. Haven’t heard that song since they invented air-conditioning.
The only final explanation I can come up with concerning the behavior of Congress in total, is that there is some kind of underpinning of blackmail going on somehow. Maybe they have easvesdropping records that they are holding over a majority of congressional members - not all, of course, but at least enough to stop everything important from going forward. I don’t know, I just don’t know. It is like they’ve gone mad.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 48
Yeah, there is so much brush in Crawford this year, Bush decided he needed some immigrant help.

Anyway, it’s better resolution. Still a little cluttered with the flags, but easier to see Tancredo standing all alone.
Apologies if this has already been posted. Having computer troubles.
Big Mitch:
Congrats on your 15 minutes!

Here’s what I wish:
Get Bush on the ranch. Lock him in a room and medicate the heck out of him. Put Laura in charge (not a first for a first lady’s role). Declare a victory in Iraq - so what if it’s not real. Nothing’s been based on reality for the duration of shrub’s reign.. Bring the troops home (have Laura sign shrub’s signature for him).
Wake shrub up from his month-long dream. Tell him he won. Parade cub scouts down Pennsylvania Avenue (He won’t know the difference)in victory celebration. Problem solved.
I gave Kerry an earful about it via return e-mail the other evening. Maybe it will get me off a list. (Today I gave an earful to Edwards.)

I just heard on Air America that there is a sixth Republican hooker scandal, to be reported on Rachel Maddow Show.
LS @ 53
That’s I all can figure also. Either that, or the WH is using drugs and hypnotic suggestion on them. Which doesn’t leave us any less scr*wed, just allows for potential recovery if we can get them out of it.
LS @ 53
I don’t know what is going on either. I feel like an old Roman priest..looking at a cow’s liver and trying to tell the future. Something is going on, otherwise with Taylor, Meirs and the rest of them; it should be contempt vote sub-committee..committee vote..full House..one afternoon..
oddmommy @ 45
on tuesday morning when i called senator kennedy’s office i was transferred someone who had the amendment in front of him (i’m guessing an intern or junior aide who’s focus is foreign policy).
he was quite nice, pretty knowledgable and sympathetic to my concerns…. he also said that iran, unlike iraq, was a real security threat; that if iran were to get a nuke - it is 50/50 they would use it and he is 100% sure that they would give it to terrorists like hezbollah to use; that iran wants to be regional hegemon (not sure how i square that with the suicial aim of wanting to use a nuke).
if he reflects the views in senator kennedy’s office… i think there is cause to worry.
‘course i didn’t only listen - i tried to make the case that support for the amendment was irresponsible in today’s political and rhetorical climate.
P J Evans @ 58
today when i called they were keeing track of how many people called to complain. that’s a good sign and means i’m not the only person calling.
keep it up ‘pups!
The Iraqi “Government’s” planned vacation does not surprise me.. First off they probably do it every year anyway…
Second, They are STALLING !! Of course they are.. They know Dickster and the PNAC and Halliburton and Blackwater won’t leave until an OIL DEAL is secured.. But as soon as they do that, and the US pulls out it’s troops.. they will be beheaded in a very public way for selling Iraqi’s out and giving a sweet oil deal the the same “infidels” that raped and pileged their homeland.
I would do the same thing if any foreign country did to us what we did to Iraq..
Think “Red Dawn”..
Big Mitch @ 41
AFAIK, only as Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman. He’s still a general.
Mojo @ 69
So…do you think they’ll RETURN from “vacation”?
LS @ 53
yeah. i think it’s important to remember that the house did the same thing just a few weeks ago (h.con.r.21). the insanity is not limited to the senate.
P J Evans @ 70
On the front line in the war against gays.
Why doesn’t the whole world wink and let Bush declare victory. Maybe we should start planning a victory parade in NY in 120 days.
Nequals1 @ 71
Here’s a very novel thought. Remember the 1/4 billion $ stolen from the bank in Iraq the other day? Well, it was stolen by “insiders”. Now, I would not put it past these guys to “take the money and run” knowing the US might leave, because their lives and the lives of all of the families of that “government” would be toast. Baby Doc Duvalier was flown out of Haiti on a US military plane to France with $500,000,000. He looted the bank and split with the assistance of the United States, and he now lives comfortably in the south of France.
P J Evans @ 70
He’s still CJCS until September when his retirement becomes effective.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 63
great linky thing!!!
Mojo @ 69
Hmm, you may be on to something there.
I’ve always felt the Iraq invasion was about oil-not WMD, not Hussein, not terrorism-but oil.
Is this like a high stakes game of chicken? The Iraqis won’t “give” the U.S. its oil until the current leadership is guaranteed protection. And George/Dick won’t give the Iraqi leadership protection until the U.S. gets its oil.
Is that too tin foil hatty…or just right?
Maybe Bush/Cheney paid the Iraqi government off and will give them safe passage out of there in August, so they can install who they want in there. Hence all the hoopla about “September”.
Nequals1 @ 71
Very reluctantly… Under extreme duress from the Dickster..
I think they are stalling until the US Baghdad Fortress.. er.. I mean Embassy is completed so they will survive long enough to complete their commitments to the PNAC goons that placed them in office.. That’s exactly why Al_Sadr groups as well as many others have LEFT the Iraq Parliament and there is danger of them not being able to meet a QUORUM !! So, yea.. they may as well NOT come from vacation
LS @ 75
Really, you don’t have to dig deep to find a motive to steal 250,000,000 dollars.

We’re all Kremlinologists these days. We have a secretive, beyond-the-law dictatorship and a do-nothing Peoples’ Chamber who pretends they’re doing something by following rules that have no meaning.
To quote the Clash:
if any elected official is being blackmailed by illegal wiretapping they NEED to buck up and make it public: i know it would take tremendous courage but it would expose the crimes of this president. we need true patriots NOW.
mc @ 78
Sounds about right to me..
I was driving down Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood in Dec of 2002.. There was a huge protest going on, so naturally I parked the car and joined in.. There were lots of young people protest that “W” was even TALKING about invading Iraq.. they KNEW it was just about the oil way back then..
When did that message get lost ???
fdl reader @ 87
And it could be any kind of situation…they could have recordings of lobbying deals, drug deals, sex deals, national security breaches, leaks…all kinds of stuff. If Gonzo has that stuff, they are screwed - especially if the FBI had agreed to it. Hmmmmm….that could be what the hospital visit was all about.
Next Thursday in Millennium Park… I am sooo going to be there. Hopefully they’ll allow video cameras since it’s a radio show, who knows?
The panelists are usually sharp & witty, but the star here is Fitz. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t comment on scooter. It ought to be great!
This is like a receiving a gift for no reason! Thanks for the heads-up.
BTW Jane, has anyone ever told you you’re gorgeous? Or am I the first? *g*
randi rhodes on air america is saying she’s telling dem fundraisers ‘no’ right now too: “DO NOT make me wait until 2008 to bail you guys out; if you wait ’til then they will win; what you need to do right now costs NOTHING.”
Hey… I shared an elevator with Fitz this past Monday at the Dirksen Federal Building (courthouse) in Chicago. I pretended to be nonchalant and didn’t say anything. He’s a tall man with quite a presence.
Help. The Kos link in the post is broken. Anybody?
