We had a fabulous discussion with Glenn Greenwald yesterday at the FDL Book Salon and his book is up to #137 in sales on Amazon but I have to say that that falls into the category of Just Not Good Enough.
The response to his new book, A Tragic Legacy: How a Good vs. Evil Mentality Destroyed the Bush Presidency, on the part of institutional book review organs has been complete silence. Glenn's presence in the blog world and the progressive movement, not to mention the work he does in Salon, is invaluable. No bloviating pundit wants to be deconstructed by Glenn Greenwald and right wing pants pissers think of him as a boogeyman on the level of Osama Bin Forgotten. But if we want our own voices to be promoted, to resonate and continue to have influence, we've got to step up and support them.
If you haven't bought Glenn's book please do so. If you've got a blog, no matter how small, please put up a link. It actually takes a ridiculously small number of books (relative to total sales) to push a book to #1 on Amazon and that plays a big part in his ability to get on the NYT best seller list and gain wider notice and recognition for the tremendous amount of work he did to put this book together.
Glenn shows up every day for us. Let's show up for Glenn.

First?
I posted something about Patterico’s attacks on Glenn in the thread the other day, but they appear to have been scrubbed out. Why?
If he gets booked on the Daily Show or Colbert, he’ll be golden.

First to order because Jane asked nicely!
Glenn Greenwald is outstanding.
Thanks for the nudge..order done.
Balrog @ 5
Thank you, Balrog.
Mine is supposed to have shipped already. I’ll likely order another one for ‘my’ library, this evening.
cls180 @ 3
ITA. I would love to see colbert ask Glenn: great president or greatest president? bwahahaha!
Hi Jane!
It was a delightful gathering yesterday. Thanks again for having us over. I wish we had more time for peeps talk, though.
I just started reading this book the other night. I haven’t been reading books as eagerly lately-rage fatigue. Each seem to point out what we already know, just in a different way. I am so ashamed of my government and angry at the masses that are accomplices. Thanks to the people on this site and few others that care enough to make noise.
Like I said yeasterday buy 2 and give one away to someone thats on the fence.
jo6pac
I can’t wait to get mine.
I’ll buy the book!
OT - Atrios has a really, really good idea about how to leverage the new revelations regarding Cheney’s control over the executive branch:
“the best way to get to our 3-year-old president is to start taunting him for playing second fiddle to his Uncle Dick, just like he did with dear old dad all those years before he found a new daddy figure in Dick.”
OK. Two more copies for the Newt family. Jeez, I gotta make me some kids!
Does it strike anyone else as bizarre that this primo WaPo series on Cheney is not apparently going to say anything about Plamegate??? With all the sources the authors have talked to, one might think there’d be some opportunity for new info about that.
Bob in HI
xargaw @ 12
Hi ya, I totally relate to the rage fatigue and was just reflecting on how I can support patriots like Glenn and Marcy and Jane and Christy by showing up, listening, and yes, throwing some $$$ in. It’s just a small way I can feel a little bit of power and like I’m making an effort.
(PS I’m not saying you are not making an effort. Au Contraire. Just saying I relate to your fatigue.
jo6pac @ 13
Speaking of ordering multiples..would there be any way to order multiples and have them distributed to FDLers who want to read them..There must be some use for our newly learned social networking. Jane???
you’re right, respected Ms. Jane. I don’t usually read nonfiction in my limited spare time, but I WILL get this book, because you are right…..we need to show that people are listening en masse to brilliant blogger minds like Glenn’s…..and put to rest the dismissive bullshit stereotypes once and for all.
Ordered last week, and picked up Gore’s book just to get the free shipping.
Gore’s book arrived saturday, currently next up in my summer reading stack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jane - what you say is correct. They REALLY hate Glenn and you will see all sorts of attacks against this book.
Buchanan just said that Ghouliani trumps everybody on 9/11…unless you have fireman after fireman after fireman after fireman show up on national TV shows. Well, put them on!!
Bob Schacht @ 16
well, Fred Hiatt IS already screaming in agony……perhaps they thought doing that would be too much like, uh, torture?
Bob Schacht @ 16
(The spook arises from the dead, how appropriate)
Several sources (EmptyWheel, Taylor Marsh, War And Piece, etc) are suggesting that parts 3 and 4 are going to be about the energy task force and the cooking of prewar intel. the last one is where plamegate will rear its lovely head.
(And I want you all to know, it is all your fault. You have infected me with the blogging bug. Now I haveta getta blog. Grrrrr.)
oddmommy @ 22
We’re at war, Fred. Suck it up. And hold your breath…(splash….)
oddmommy @ 22
Uh, per Dana Perino, the United States does not torture.
LS @ 21
Ghouliani also trumps everybody on cross dressing and befriending mafiosos and priests who prey on boys. I think he trumps everybody on ex-wives and infidelity too, but I don’t have all the information on the other family values candidates.
the best way to get to the Chimperor is to bombard his every appearance with rotten fruit and feces…cover the fucker in shit, and then howl with derision when he tries to clean the shit off his $4000 suits, or his $1000 boots…
.
Done, Jane. Thanks for all you do
Alfred Kelgarries @ 23
Hurray! I’ve started scanning the comment threads for your handle as eagerly as i look for a TRex byline.
Bob Schacht @ 16
Or Iraqi Reconstruction, (with the Halliburton contracts) or the $140,000 MZM contract, or Chalabi, or the forged Niger documents, or planning the attack on Iran, or…
Wait, he is involved in everything.
*xyz @ 14
How’s he gonna know? All he watches is Fox and all of their shows tonight so far have lead with the dead pregnant white woman.
OT, Tweety seems to think Chee-knee will win the fight against Rahm on the funding battle. Rahm is sounding like he is serious about taking on the VP.
For once I’m on Rahm’s side…
David Ehrenstein @ 2
Anybody here gonna answer Dave? He’s right about the questions - they were good. I don’t have the time to look now.
OT -
Zoellick confirmed as new World Bank president
dakine01 @ 32
Sounds like he’s got him pretty good. Not part of the Executive Branch? Cough up the energy papers and no mo money 4 U Dick.
dakine01 @ 32
Yeah but he blew Tweety off when asked about impeachment.
I pre-ordered my copy of Glenn’s book a couple of weeks ago, and it should be delivered this week. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Ordered one copy from Amazon, and tomorrow will buy Jeffrey Feldman’s book Framing the Debate at the LoDo Tattered Cover — after the book signing, we’ll hang out with the Denver Drinking Liberally crowd.
Gellman and Ron Suskind up on Tweety show.
Helen @ 36
They don’t have the votes yet - maybe never.
Helen @ 31
Every once in a while, the public gets a chance to speak directly to the president.
Remember Harry Taylor, and always be on the lookout for those rare opportunities to speak to those in power.
dakine01 @ 32
that is a totally bullshit frame. WTF? It’s like a contest, a damn football game or something!
Where the fuck is the outrage??
Consider it bought Jane, it will be good beach reading material, and it will piss off my old man in the process!
LS @ 40
I tried to explain some on an earlier thread that 26% JAR for the Pres and lower for “Chee-knee” does not equate to 74% in favor of impeachment and rmeoval from office. Even though most of us here feel that the high crimes, far worse than an extra-marital BJ, have been committed, the reality is, we are the minority. Much to the dismay of many of us.
Ha, ha, ha…Bush/Cheney co-dependency..D’ya think?
CocoaBeach @ 28
On behalf of Glenn, thank you, too.
Twisted Martini @ 43
Well that’s worth the price right there.
randiego @ 42
Of course it is but ya never know what will trigger the average voter to pay attention and realize these guys are crooks and stealing from us. Rahm is just calling BS on Cheney, something not enough people in positions of power (or the bully pulpit) have done in the last seven years.
Every little step helps and don’t refuse any help offered.
LS @ 45
kinda
Thanks for the reminder, Jane, for those of us out being Proud yesterday — I’ve ordered the book and now I’m reading the Book Salon. Such luminaries yesterday! Very sorry to have missed it.
dakine01 @ 44
I don’t view impeachment as a method for throwing him out of office (although that would be lovely). He’ll be gone in 17 months regardless. I look at impeachment as a means to get the truth out. It’s a means to get everyone to PAY ATTENTION.
This time I bought when it was needed.
Thanks for the nudge, Jane. You are the greatest!
NewDealFarmGrrrlll @ 29
urrkkkk (spook chokes up, goes to hide behind tiki torches, snuffling…)
I can’t afford to spend any money right now, but I did put it up on my humble blog.
(I was in a different financial situation for Glenn’s last book, which I enjoyed.)
They just said that although the constitution says one thing, if the president says it’s so, it’s so.
I’m sick of the analysis about the “personalities” the teevee keeps spewing out…This whole Administration stole the 2000 election and the 2004 election in order to execute their Neocon agenda, period. It’s all about oil and world domination by force. Bush is just as much in on all of this as Cheney. They are bloodbrothers in history. They (and their enablers) are torturers and they need to be arrested for all of their crimes against humanity and the fraud they committed against the United States of America. JMHO.
Howdy y’all.
Jane does FDL get money if we buy the book at amazon instead of going to the store in our town?
Helen @ 51
Impeachment would immediately polarize large segments. The congressional investigations like the one today where Jerry Nadler had Christie Whitman on the hot seat are doing the trick. There’re almost seven years of on-going criminal and inappropriate activity to be un-covered. Just think of the on-going crimes already uncovered since January.
Nixon was in power with a Dem controlled House and Senate with far larger majorities than the Dems currently have and it still took over two years from the time of the break-in before he resigned. And the reality is, if he had come out the day after the break-in and admitted the involvement of his people it would have been a scandal but he would have most likely survived it and gone on to retire with honors at the end of his term. As it was, it took the release of the so-called “smoking gun” tapes that showed him directing the cover-up two days after the break-in that finally brought him down.
We are nowhere near there. Yet.
Helen @ 51
I hear you, and I agree with you.
Petro @ 54
that’s a nice spot (linked to your name)
Even though clients aren’t paying their bills and I’m close to closing up shop I had to order the book after Jane’s always persuasive arguments.
Did my question include a forbidden word or the name of a dr$g?
Ooops. now i see it. sorry mods.
Petro @ 54
Refer to @ 18..any ideas?
Breaking on Both Gonzo AND Cheney:
Schumer says Gonzo Must Recuse Himself In Re Cheney Security Lapses!
One immediate side effect of the Darth Hit Piece in Wapoo is to embolden the dems a bit…
(Self corrected due to sudden reactivation of substantial part of prefrontal cortex…)
I bought one for my household, and one for a right-wing friend. Why not reach out and send a copy to a wingnut?
Alfred Kelgarries @ 63
Good news!!
SnarKassandra @ 61
The filters have been acting up since last night, cassie. They ate two of my posts for reasons even Cheney couldn’t understand…:>
“IT’s not personal, IT’s IT!” (Old drinking song of IBM mainframe consultants…)
OT There is a nutcase attack on peak oil (i.e. the idea that oil is a finite resource and that we are not that far off from a point where production will peak and begin to decline) by Raymond J. Learsy. Finite means finite. I don’t understand what is difficult about the concept.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....53546.html
I really wonder what Huffington thinks is gained by giving a forum in a supposedly liberal blog to this nonsense.
BTW gasoline futures are up and even though inventories were up (good) last week, refinery usage was down (bad). What this amounts to is that oil companies are moving to stop the downward trend in gasoline prices. If (and this is a big if) inventories are good when the next report comes out Wednesday, there may be further price decreases for a week but the pushback on declining prices has definitely begun. The fundamentals currently indicate a price around $2.90 but the oil companies are clearly pushing to get something much closer to $3.00.
Maybe Gonzo will say he’s not actually part of the Judiciary Branch, because Bush said so.
Petro @ 54
Very nice Glenn spot @ your home.
You’ve Got It, Jane
Eureka Springs @ 34
Thank goodness! I thought the post might go to a non neocon. *s*
If Jane is not here, can someone else from FDL answer my question from #56?
LS @ 68
Wait, he’s not. He’s part of the Executive Branch. I forgot. But, he’ll find a way to say that because of that, he doesn’t need to recuse himself. Addington is madly writing memos for Gonzo to sign.
Get that Addington outta there.
I just ordered the book.
LS @ 72
we need to set up a fumigation tent
SnarKassandra @ 71
FDL does make something if you click on amazon above and order it through that link.
Jane’s right. The Amazon rank of 137 corresponds, in the WHO ranking of the world’s health systems, to Ivory Coast.
We need to get Glenn up to Slovenia, or better!
SnarKassandra @ 71
Amazon throws FDL some change when books are purchased by those linking to Amazon from FDL.
That Bookstore owner is a good friend of Hillary. Previously I’ve ordered Greenwald there, will so again…
there’s a matter of paying for my Amb.Wilson book there first…
Petro @ 54
Ditto here,I posted it on my humble blog,we will see what shakes out after I pay rent.
http://ornerybastard.blogspot......s-man.html
Elliott @ 59
newtonusr @ 69
Much appreciated!
SnarKassandra @ 71
The answer is yes, cassie, if you click on an amazon link on an FDL page to get you to their site. Doesn’t matter what you do afterwards, it is a “click-through” and FDL gets a bit of money. If you just go to Amazon on your own, FDL gets nada. (Disclaimer: I program using the Amazon, Yahoo, and eBay API’s and am learning Facebook and Second Life.)
BTW, there is a new thread, sorry no linky.
New thread upstairs.
New thread linky.
Well I will ask if we want to support Amazon more or the local store more.
SnarKassandra @ 56
Yes — FDL gets a little money for any Amazon book purchase, so long as you access Amazon through the FDL link.
SnarKassandra @ 85
IMHO, support the local store. They are having a hard enough time surviving as it is.
SnarKassandra @ 85
I like to support the local bookstores, but a purchase at Amazon at this time helps boost the book up the bestseller list, which makes it a two’fer — FDL gets some money, and the book gets some priceless buzz.
-ck- @ 88
good thought, ck. missed that point.
I checked with my neighborhood (non-chain) bookseller. They didn’t have it on their inventory/order list yet, so that made it an easy decision to order from Amazon.
done.
i look forward to the read, and enjoyed the salon yesterday.
-ck- @ 86
Is there anyway I can buy both Glenn’s book and Al Gore’s new one at the same time and thereby increasing the amount FDL will get?
TeddySanFran @ 77
Is there anyway to add other books to the list? Like Al Gore’s? If I buy 4 things at once, but start the purchase going through the link to buy Glenn’s does only the one book get credited?
Joe K—
Yes. That only counts as a single order at amazon.
We can further help Glenn’s book sales by requesting our respective libaries, big and small, to order and give your name for the wait list. Works like magic here in my little city. We have an offical population of 5,000 but half of these simply maintain second vacation homes here. A huge increase, I should add, since Bush/Cheney robbed the Honorable Al Gore’s election.
KO has opened his show with blistering report on Cheney. bless ‘em.
egregious @ 94
oh good, because i bumped it up (Glenn’s Patriot book, and a spice mincer (-;) to receive free shipping.
If you pray, pray for John Paul Stevens
.
I’ve emailed with Glenn, and was impressed with the patience he showed me in trying to explain an issue that had my blood boiling. Of the Bush/wingnut critics he has been the most consistent and the most accurate.
My suggestion to everyone here is “Ask your local library to buy a copy”. Every library should have a Recommend for Purchase option. Give them the author, title, ISBN number helps a lot. You may need your library card to do this. That should increase sales. If your library has this book on order, ask that they get more. Check it out, early and often. Get your friends to check it out. Get them to add his earlier work “How Would a Patriot Act?” if they don’t have it already.
BTW, I bought my copy.
just now ordered it.
your wish is my command.
which only makes it even more gratifying.
glenn RAWKS!!
and Jane,
you ROOOOOCCCCKKKK!
can not thank you enough for our
beautiful Lake Life.
I bought it, Imus would have pushed it.
For Cassie,
I no longer use Amazon for reasons of ethics involving the treatment of other beings that share the planet with us, or are more or less dependent on us. Also, Amazon is not known to me to be a contributor to progressive causes.
Just me. YMMV
Given my finances I have to wait for things to come out in paperback, but then I’m all over this like ravens on road kill….
When Marcy’s book came out, i bugged my local library [Montgomery Co, MD — LOTS of branches] about stocking it. Don’t know if they ordered their copies through Amazon, but it did sell some books.
Anyone know if writing The Daily Show would influence their booking Glenn. Anyone have any ideas.
Also I wrote Glenn suggesting both our local “political” bookstore, Politics & Prose, and the Diane Rehm show. Anyone else have local bookstores he could visit?
PS - ordered my copy via the FDL-Amazon link when it first appeared.
-ck- @ 38
Oooh, I love the Tattered Cover!!!!
btw, just ordered the book and its at #75 on amazon.
I ordered on the 17th and today Amazon emailed that the book has shipped. Also, Amazon lowered the price to $14.97 (due to good sales?) since the pre-order date and gave me the lower price.
thanks Jane!
just ordered the book thru Amazon along with a Jethro Tull Live CD so i get free shipping! 2 great causes to spend money on, and i’m very thankful i have any left after sacrificing most of my money to the the Oil Gods…
Alfred Kelgarries @ 87
Ditto.
It’s already at #51!
Colbert could have him on with a whole act of having his hand forced by the Internet-generated sales. Go democracy!
Screw Amazon. Definitely not a supporter of progressive causes. Order from your local independent or from Powells. Let our money speak!
Thanks Glenn for all the good work you are doing! I just ordered my copy.
Paul Wartenberg @ 99
Another option for people wanting to make copies available to FDL members or other like-minded progressives that can’t afford to purchase right now is to contact your local library and find out if they are interested in accepting a donation of “A Tragic Legacy”.
I tried to get a copy of Glenn’s first book, “How Would a Patriot Act?” from the Minneapolis (MN) central library and was told there was 42 people ahead of me on the waiting list. I emailed the donations rep at the library to see if he was interested in accepting copies as donations and he was thrilled at my offer. I ended up purchasing four copies and donated three of them.
Unfortunately I’m currently unemployed so I won’t be able to do that again.
Just a thought on how to make this important work available to more people.
oh man, I just bought one, but when the hell am I gonna find time to read this? I’ve got a stack of unread books to get through.
Me too #114. But I just bought Glenn’s book. Am trying to get started on Gore’s latest, but The Nation awaits, then to Gore.
Will have to add it to my stack to. Late to the post but figured, since I was here, I’d give anybody looking an update. 11PM PDT and it’s up to #27. Excellent job all….
Bought it before my first cup of coffee. Up to #24 now.
