Next question on "don't ask, don't tell." Hillary happy to deal with this, to applause. Biden: Peter Pace is flat wrong;" Gays openly serve, and we need them, and it's not right to kick them out.
Any disagreement? We're seeing an advertisement for the Democratic Party, (except on Iraq -- note we did not discuss Iran or Israel, or Russia, etc.) How will they distinguish themselves?
Edwards trying to make the point on leadership?
Funny question about how to use Bill Clinton. Bill appears to be getting several job offers tonight. Can't hurt Hillary, who doesn't need to say anything. Others simply focus on Bill's strengths, instead of the vulnerability he presents for Hillary if you take 10 years to write a 600 page book.
Richardson brings in Middle East policy and need to revise peace process -- smart to use the Clinton question for that.
Response of the night so far: Hillary says we need to use all our Presidents to help us repair the damage of the last 7 years. Wonder how George 41 feels about that?
Gas prices: What would you do? (This is where they'll all sound silly.) Dodd links energy solution to global warming -- just lost the coal vote. He advocates a carbon tax -- a tough stand favored by many economists. His rebate proposal mirrors what economists were urging us in California 35 years ago.
Grampa Gravel says we need to grow up about high gas prices -- it's really a lot more when you consider the costs of Middle East military adventures.
Usual from Edwards, Richardson, Biden rhetoric about price gouging, but they're probably not serious about this; they all seem to see the links between energy/warming/security. Shifting into part II of the debate. Back in a few minutes.
UDATE: Were staring part II, with questions from "undecided" voters from NH:
Q re Iraq: how to rebuild military? Dennis K: we need to end our occupation, and can't end breaking Army till then. Any disagreement? Here we get into proposals to increase size of the military.
Obama focuses on extended tours and treating troops with dignity when they come home -- Bush tried to do it on the cheap.
To Dodd -- are there relics of the Cold War that can be cut? Responds we're not listing to our military; all recognize responsibility to ensure security.
Q from a military mom: Why can't veterans receive treatment at hospital of their choice? Obama says not all facilities have full services. Turns the question: Discusses VA ability to negotiate drug prices; and vets should get service at non-VA hospitals if VA not available. Richardson says he disagrees, but it's not clear what about.
To Gravel on his experience from VA: -- says he gets his meds from the VA -- (smirking in the press room). Attacks Obama for not enough oversight of Walter Reed. Did he know about those problems? No.
Q on Iran: How to solve it? Force or diplomacy? Hillary says she's concerned about Iran, and she's pleased that Bush starting more diplomacy; need a process of engagement, just like we had with the Soviets. I keeps seeing a different Hillary -- talking directly to the electorate with a of confidence, as long as she doesn't have to explain her prior votes.
Edwards asked more pointed: would you use force to prevent nuclear Iran? Carrots and sticks -- and the sticks are sanctions. Wolk asks about military threats? No responsible president can take it off the table.
Biden says, "give up on policy of regime change."
UPDATE: 8:45:
What about Pakitan? Hillary says Wh not listening to her advice about strengthening that regime and recognizing his dilemmas.
Blitzer asks Dennis K about killing civilians -- he needs to ask this of all. Obama ducks the question by focusing on OBL -- "you take him out" -- and not the civilians. Good, show of hands. All say tit's okay to kill civilians, but Hillary says we can do it as long as there is "not a tremedous amount of collateral damage." God help us. Only Dennis K kept his hand down, I think.
Q about Darfur: What should US do? Biden calls for no-fly zone. Another raise hands: use militayr force to stop genocide? Hillary wants a clarification. She's telling them all how to be President.

zed?
Arrgh, Teddy, Congrats!!! :P
Boring when they all give the same basic answers on energy.
Richardson defending gas companies?
hey scarecrow, how’s the spin room?
Richardson: Apollo program for clean energy. Absolutely.
Biden — take away the oil companies’ subsidies, investigate them
Richardson on the Apollo.
Good for him. The Apollo Alliance is the way to go!
all of those who say the Justice Dept should investigate the oil companies - get a clue!
Biden, take away oil subsidy. Justice department investigate price gouging.
Part two! Audience questions.
Part Two — audience participation!
TeddySanFran @ 7
They must be in full spin mode by now!!!
Half time!
ooooh, Andy!
I don’t get why CNN doesn’t use the News Ticker during the debate… they could include quotes from the debate intermixed with news about Paris Hilton.
this is excellent — thanks for the live-blogging! just getting in from work and watching the debate
color commentary time. BORING
This is fun! I’m alternating between here and over at Atrios’ place. Two, Two, Two times live-blogging!!
Yes, I’m a nerd.
Oh barf, the cadaver Larry King talking head now…
Julie Waters @ 18
or about the fact that Scoots is going to be sentenced on Tuesday. Fitzmas comes again!
Larry King?
Are you kidding me?
Larry &$^@ King?
i’ve got a series of liveblogging comments on previous thread and will now come over here. they are on 3 minute break
I am anti-war, left wing?
John King sez the candidates are trying to answer the anti-war wing of the Democratic party. Is there another wing I am unaware of?
Could we please lobby for Olbermann to moderate one of the Dems’ debates?
These crapped-out moderators really detract from the event.
RevDeb @ 20
yeah, but that’s because they want a fight, and what they’re seeing is a fairly unified party. The Republicans will not be happy watching this.
Candy Crowley sez Hillary the frontrunner staying above the fray. How much does Candy make for this insight?
TeddySanFran @ 26
A teeny tiny wing with 2 or 3 people in it.
According to the DoddClock http://chrisdodd.com/blog it looks like Dennis Kucinich has gotten the least amount of talk time. Too bad, I like Dennis, and he has a lot to say.
Mauimom @ 28
And we expected something else from Faux Fox, aka CNN?
Most here seem to think Edwards is winning, but the only attacks on Obama (other than Gravel’s blanket bombs) have been from Edwards and Obama shot them both down handily. The first, on Iraq, resulted in Edwards essentially having to admit he was wrong.
I know after seven years of Bush, admitting you’re wrong is refreshing. But after you try to shoot somebody down in a debate… that’s not when you want to be explaining why you were the one who was wrong.
The second attack, on Health Care, was too esoteric to be effective. And Obama appeared to answer it well.
Edwards’ answer to reduce gas prices by investigating the companies is just silly.
Just my opinion, but I think Obama has been doing quite well. Particularly the way he refuted Wolf’s question about English.
Wow-I agree with Larry King. All of them DO sound good. I’m proud to be a Democrat right now.
Did someone tell us who “Miss Laura” is? [EPU]
Is CNNN the only network carrying this? MSNBC doesn’t seem to be, nor the big 3 broadcast networks. I haven’t and won’t check FOX.
Well I’m into this thing for a bit over a half hour. And I’m not angry yet. That’s something, isn’t it?
Obama’s winning the debate because he’s the tallest.
Andy calling out JE for referring to Hillary as Hillary, while he calls the rest Senator or Congressman. This is the level of junior high school triviality Al Gore’s book is about, Anderson.
We’re not getting the “color commentary” in media room; just the state with no sound. The candidates are sittle down and chatting with each other. The look relaxed.
TeddySanFran @ 30
WAY WAY too much. (stops from making catty comment)
Arrgh, I’m torn in my allegiance, rubber match of the BoSox/Evil Empire, and the Dem. Debate!!! Decisions, decisions….
Mauimom @ 35
MissLaura is the DKos diarist who’s live-blogging the debate over there right now…
We see you Scarecrow! Just don’t know which one is you.
RevDeb @ 33
FWIW, Wolfie gets to moderate the Repub debate on Tuesday as well so will be interesting to see how he deals with them after tonight’s showing. This per Union-Leader web site.
Actually… I really like Kucinich.
can someone enlighten me, please? Who is this miss laura scarecrow is sitting with?
Mauimom @ 35
Dkos frontpager, live-blogging over there.
Who the hell is the “Anti-War” community? I know very few Democrats who are conceptually anti-war, but there are a lot of us who are anti-occupation.
Candy C is making me want to turn off the teevee.
CTuttle @ 43
This is why God invented TiVo.
I’m with ya: BoSox forever.
Scarecrow @ 29
That seems to be Wolfie’s goal to provoke a fight…
dakine01 @ 46
Did someone say softball lobbing exercise? How about kiss up and happy talk? That’s what I expect from him tues.
egregious @ 25
you really are a doll!
Wife of Iraq-serving soldier up now, schoolteacher with a question.
DK: this country has to end its OCCUPATION of Iraq.
Yea, Dennis!!!
Mauimom @ 51
Actually PinP!!!
Kuchinich, offer no bill. To rebuild cut funding because small percentage goes to troops.
Julie Waters @ 50
Bingo
RevDeb @ 54
It would be nice if afterwards someone held Wolfe down and forced him to recognize and admit his biases. A compare of the two mod jobs would be ideal to force the issu. Olberman? Side-by-side like the AGAG statmenets?
Obama, tours are too lengthy. When they come home they need to be treated with dignity.
Wait, why is Wolfie asking questions now?
dakine01 @ 62
good idea!
Dodd, Everyone appreciates the troops. We’re not liste4ning to our senior military leaders. No one should be elected if their priority is not safety and security.
Not a bad question, but why was that local anchorwoman making the questioner into a human-interest piece. Stay on topic lady (uhhh, the people standing around, answering questions, it’s a debate!).
Dodd is really impressive. He kinda reminds of what JFK might be like now, if he’d lived. Of course, JFK would be about 100 I suppose…
TeddySanFran @ 64
because he’s a media whore.
This has been another addition of simple answers to simple questions.
TeddySanFran @ 64
Because we the peeps are too stoopid to ask intelligent q’s, duh.
jennifer from audience elementary teacher Manchester husband soldier in iraq: finish mission bring guys gals home Q what vision ending military operations rebuild military
kucinich thank you and family serving country must end occupation iraq congress must not provide money this war has degraded our service ability peace is way to reflect our strength not military being misused work w world community in cooperation
Q rebuild stretched military
kucinich: tighten military spending 25% $97B but only small fraction to troops end US commitment as instrument of diplomacy
Q increase military cost billions of dollars?
obama difference pentagon budget and size military cold war. make certain troops not going on repeated lengthy tours provide support on ground and cant do currently and welcome home treat w dignity and honor they deserve this admin has not, they have done on the cheap stress disorder disability payments denied i have plans to deal w that
dodd whatever disagreements allapplaud our men and women in military we’re not listening to senior military who tried as during cold war need reassessment priorities no ones going be elected pres unless we feel they are keeping us safe and secure. that is principal responsibility but to do that not first arrow in the quiver but utilize other resources, this has not happened this administration for the 21st century military needs of our nation
Cut the big ticket items? Duh, ya think? “Star wars missle defense” has wasted billions and will never work.
looks like they won’t let Gravel sit too close.
Probably a good idea - he actually *could* bite someone….
TeddySanFran @ 68
90 last week
social worker with son in Iraq. Why is it that veterans cannot get service in the hospital of their choice?
Yes. Cut the F-22. 110 million per plane, IIRC.
Mom of serviceman: Why can’t vets get services at the hospital of their choice?
This is NOT a war. It’s a chaotic occupation.
suggested talking points:
– the next president, who will be one of us, will end w’s disastrous war, and can count on the support of our colleagues and the country
– the next president, who will be one of us, will end w’s disastrous on foreign policy, energy, climate change, health care, the economy …. and can count on the support of our colleagues and the country
…. assume victory; work back from that
TeddySanFran @ 69
90
damn, eg, you make my fingers hurt just to look at your output!
TeddySanFran @ 68
JFK would be 90 - last week.
TeddySanFran @ 80
And its cogent too. Wish I could say the same thing about mine…
Obama totally screwed up this answer about the VA. Completely.
Shorter Obama: The reason your son has to go to the VA hospital is that the drugs are cheaper.
Horrible, horrible answer.
support the troops: bring them home ****now***
Richardson says under his healthcare system, vets could go anywhere for care.
Obama, should go to veteran hospital unless difficulty.
Richardson, any hospital. Cost of living raises.
Obama was dead wrong.
Q merrimack NH social worker i think husband served: why cant vets get medical care at hospital of their choice
obama we thank james for his service here in NH we dont have a full service system, injured must travel elsewhere efficiencies we can obtain in the VA system issues like prescription drug price gouging VA does a good job negotiating VA gets going thru system part of it medicare prescription drug bill that passed congress exempted negotiations for medicare. we have to have VA that serves everybody. some rural communities dont have adequate services for vets, we have to make sure there is a private hospital option
Q not just veterans hospital?
obama should be able to go to VA hospital unless difficulty accessing, hardship on family and then private hospital should be allowed
rich i disagree hero’s health care if any doctor any hospital VA doesnt offer that choice within 150 miles if they need what we have in our VA system is not cost of living mental health PTSD we do not help them need well funded VA health system make sure well funded and thanks to those serve
STFU Wolf
dakine01 @ 83
Gee, teddy, I thought you were about as co-gent as they come!
Gravel satisfied getting his meds through VA. Says Obama is on oversight committee. Asks if he knew it before the Priest piece.
Obama sez we’ve done lots of oversite.
GRavel: Gov’t has ALWAYS waged war agaisnt the veeterans!!! Obama, you’re on that committee, why did it take the WaPoo stories to get action?
Gravel!! Obama, you were on the committee. Did you know vet care was so Bad, or were you not paying attention?!
Obama, not funded properly. Who does the funding again, Barack?
I want whatever meds Gravel is on :)
There are some tears in the audience. These people are hurting. There is compassion being shown here tonight, rather than all the macho bulls**t with the repubs.
I was ashamed of all the ‘hooray for torture’ talk in the repub debate. This is much better.
no one has proposed doubling the size of Guantanamo yet? What kinda debate is this?
Obama: we visited troops at med facility which did great work. Priest story on out-patient which was not so much good.
Q you served in the korean war you get your meds from the VA?
A gravel: sen obama who is on the committee for oversight, do they do oversight before they read in wapo, before see about scandal at walter reed
obama we’ve done a lot of oversight forced the admin to put money into VA
gravel tries to interrupt obama overcomes
obama need additional 2B$ for services for troops coming home. admin says not needed but 6 mo later we do in fact need this. trying to keep costs down. costs not fully factored in we have a sacred obligation toward veterans. i visited walter reed repeatedly, medically good work but outpatient disastrous. need to make it easier for vets and families to negotiate the system
Q hanover NH question about iran
TexBetsy @ 31
You forget about the DLC so soon? ;-)
jayt @ 98
:) the better kind.
Polly, retired: How would you approach Iran, force or diplomacy? If diplomacy, how?
I’m about 12 miles away from the debate site. I want to drive over and throw some old lunchmeat at Wolf.
-GSD
oops, sorry dakine01, wrong attribution.
Hill is pleased the admin is talking to Iran.
Give no quarter, Hill. Do not give BushCo credit for anything.
Mommybrain @ 105
salright… ;})
GSD @ 104
I’ll pay for the eggs and tomatoes!
wolf: what if diplomacy fails?
(wants some wartalk)
Hill made a funny.
They sent Darth to do diplomacy!!!!
Clinton, our diplomacy has been horrible for the last 6 years. Richardson did a great job for my husband.
Wolf trying to get her to say war if diplomacy doesn’t work.
Says sending Dick Cheney is not the answer, audience laughs.
Hill: occasionalyy they send Dick Cheney, that’s hardly diplomatic in my book…
Hill lays it on Cheney and Rice. More, please.
TexBetsy @ 109
I’ve got some green baloney…
Edwards certainly can relate to the questioner..
edwards really speaks to the audience. He listens and he communicates.
Edwards talking about rallies in Tehran for America after 911. That is something you don’t hear much about.
TexBetsy @ 109
I was disappointed to hear Scarecrow was in a media room, I was hoping he could lob a few tomatoes for us.
Mommybrain @ 113
how about some gummy worms for good measure?
Edwards, diplomacy then sanctions. Wolf wants war talk again. No options off the table.
These people, Democrats, are not serious about the war on terror. None have repeated John Yoo’s assertion that the US president can put childrens’ nuts in a vice in order to stop terrorists.
I mean do they want terrorists to win?
-GSD
Edwardds says : Just ten more seconds…implies to Wolfie -STFU
After watching that I’m sorry to say that I’m starting to see why Bush/Cheney are always smirking.
oooh, Wolfie — missiles, targets, war war war
O God, Wolf asking a “24″ question.
Biden — Iran is a decade away from having a weapon.
More of this please
Everythingseemssoneat @ 123
In what sense? I don’t understand.
Biden: they’re not a year or two away from weapons, they’re a decade or more away. Not imminent threat. Let’s help make things work…
Obama has finally overtaken Wolf on the Dodd Clock
RevDeb @ 119
Y’all are positively Evil!!! ;-)
