(You can open a window to the vlogging session with Howie and John by clicking here.)
In last year's congressional races there was no candidate who Blue America contributors were more excited about than Illinois Fighting Dem John Laesch. Over a thousand of our donors contributed over $20,000 to his longshot campaign against the powerful and entrenched Republican Speaker of the House. Hastert is no longer Speaker; no longer quite so entrenched or powerful and IL-14 isn't quite as red as it was in 2006. To a great extent, we have a savvy, tenatious and energetic carpenter, the son of missionaries, to thank for that. I'd like to urge you to read the transcript of the July, 2006 first visit John paid to Firedoglake in preparation to today's session. (In fact, if you have the time, please also take a look at John's post-election visit at FDL too.)
We're going to try something different today. Siun and myself are in Chicago with a robust group of Illinois bloggers and activists in order to sit down face to face and talk with John. Siun will be live blogging it and I'll be trying to lead a vlogging session. To watch our live vlog, go to Down with Tyranny and just hit the lifeguard station on the right (our world headquarters) and you'll see the portal to the vlogging session. That'll allow you to watch a real time video and audio broadcast from the Chicago Laesch event. And, of course, you can participate by typing your questions in to Siun right here at Firedoglake. She'll pass the questions on to John and I and you'll experience everything short of our visit to the Green Zebra.
We'll ask Johh how he would have been more effective than other Democratic congressmen in opposing Bush's war agenda and how he would have voted on other issues that came before Congress. And if you like what you hear, I want to ask you to join me in helping John mount another vigorous campaign in IL-14, where his success in showing that Democrats can make inroads in the area has drawn the attention of the corporate, anti-grassroots political machine of Rahm Emanuel who will be surreptitiously backing another candidate the way he disastrously ruined progressives' attempts to win an Illinois seat for Christine Cegelis last year by spending millions and millions of dollars on his own puppet candidate who sabotaged Cegelis and then, at huge cost, failed to win the general election. Emanuel, who helped engineer enough Democratic support in Congress so the Republicans could pass Bush's occupation budget, might be hard to defeat in his ward-politics district in Daley's Chicago. But in grassroots-oriented IL-14, Emanuel can be stopped from accruing more power. You can contribute to John's campaign here on our Blue America page.
Last year we placed hundreds of radio spots in IL-14 and our creative team-- hey Tommy!!!-- is working on something even better for 2008. So after you donate to John's campaign directly, also consider a dollar or two for our Blue America PAC on the same page. Enjoy the clip-- and join us for our vlog session (3pm Chicago time, 4pm EST and 1pm PT).

Hi gang! Siun here in Chicago with a room full of great folks. We’re having a little delay in video but we’re ready to chat with Howie and John!
First?
No
Joe just got here with the vlogging power source and in a couple minutes we’ll be live vlogging as well
John and Howie will be starting out with us in regular blog mode …
We also have Tracy Van Slyke here (and she’s graciously loaned us her living room), Kristen and Jared Lash from IL 14 Fireside blog community, Jen, of John’s compaign (and the future Mrs. Laesch!) , Heidi from John’s campaign, Lew just walked in, and Scott from WAN TV is back with us now.
SIUN! HOWIE! JOHN!
So happy to be here. I LOVED getting to know some of the great radio people out in IL-14… was one of my favorite districts to buy for ‘06.
Can’t wait for ‘08!!!
Jacqie! Our star media buyer!
Siun @ 7
uh, you mean our ONLY media buyer. Howie and the great candidates are the real stars. OH! and the FANTASTIC radio spots Tommy Yum and company put together. I woke up every morning with “Have You Had Enough?” playing in my head.
Hello Blue America!
Thanks for all of the support in the 2006 campaign. We are very excited about our prospects for a progressive majority after the 2008 campaign.
Today we are announcing our plans to run for U.S. Congress in 2008. This is not the traditional campaign announcement. Instead of a flashy background with a flag-draped podium, we are meeting with several Blue America bloggers in an informal setting right here in Illinois.
With any luck, the Vlog technology will be working soon.
Thanks again for the opportunity to be here today.
Respectfully,
John Laesch
John, have you been working at keeping the folks in the district aware that you’re still running for the seat? Which issues are resonating most strongly there?
Is anyone having trouble with the video link?
I see Howie!. . .
And John.
John!
It was a privilege to be one of your contributors in ‘06. Sorry for so many small donations, hope they added up ok. Thanks for all your thank you notes.
Mr. egregious and I will provide you with the legal maximum for ‘08. This time it will be fewer and larger amounts.
Laesch for Congress!
We’re going live in a second … watch the vlog at the link and ask questions here in comments!
Mr. Laesch,
My husband was a Vietnam vet and a POW, tortured by his North Vietnamese captors. He lived with his injuries for over thirty years, until his fatal heart attack 23 months ago.
My question is: do you support HR 1415, the Restore the Constitution Act, which would restore the Geneva Conventions as the law of the United States, as well as Habeas Corpus? What will you do to stop torture as the law of the United States?
With gratitude,
For Dan,
Heather
I wanna see Siun!
Video(and AUDIO) is working great on my iMac w/firefox…
I have real good sound but the live video feed is freezing. Maybe it’s just my cable Internet.
Pachacutec @ 17
Same. But it may also be my internet connection. :)
I disconnected and reconnected and it’s better now.
More mic volume would be good.
Mr. Laesch how is it that you lost to Hastert with the Foley scandel in full swing?
I’m a big fan of yours and I’ve never understood how this happend.
Congrats John and Jen. You’re both pretty easy on the eyes!
Congrats on the wedding John and Jen.
I am getting a good feed.
vlog looks and sounds great here.
Yea! Leasch!
You’re having a party without us? Hi to Lew and hi to Tracy (we got to have a nice dinner last week, congratulations on her new job.)
John thanks for hanging in there and fighting the good fight. And thanks for being brave enough to venture into the great unknown with vlogging, very exciting.
Great question on Iraq, Howie. John’s answers sounds good, though he’s speaking in generalities, the principles he’s enunciating sound good.
Wow. John’s willing to call out Dems like Rahm Emanuel when they subvert the will of the electorate?
This is news.
This guys needs to replace Hastert.
When John says the problem is with the democratic leadership - does he mean Pelosi? or Steny and Rahm?
John, Glad that you are running again in 08. I contributed in my small way to your last campaign.
My question to you is how would you have voted on the Iraq Supplemental Bill, and why?
Pachacutec @ 27
i love it!!!
thank you for saying torture and rendition are wrong!
i also think they are not in the long term interest of our country.
What is your fundraising goal for this election cycle, and what we in the blogging community do to help you reach that goal?
-Linda Mullenbach, Luv ya guys!
John,
Tell us about the effects of the Had Enough ads. I pitched in a big chunk to run those, and imagined that your volunteers would be energized.
Tell us how it worked, or better yet, let Jen tell us.
Congrats on the nuptials.
Going over to Blue America page to make another contribution.
What are your positions abortion, global warming, the environment, labor rights and other progressive issues.
John is emphasizing that change is about fighting for issues, not centrally about high profile Democrats by name, like Emanuel. John is fighting for more systemic, economic change, and better representation for those left behind by the DC elites.
Nice points he’s making.
Please reward good behavior. Let’s help John raise some money!
Camera is too high up.
John—look at the camera!
I’m proud to see you making another run. I can’t wait to get started. You’re the heir apparent and I’ll sleep better when you and Jen are in Washington. Joe
Hi John and Jen and Howie,
I one big thrill about ‘06 was introducing Howie to John via e-mail. and being involved in the Illinois roots project with Siun.
I swear to god I was tooling around crooks and liars dot com and John and Howie’s voices came out of nowhere.
QUESTIONS
What are your feelings about Bush’s directive about becoming King during a crisis?
Great to see you - I still have the bumper sticker on my car.
I just kicked in another $10 for each Blue America candidate, including John.
I have the embed player going on C&L and it looks and sounds great on Internet explorer. Yahoo guys…
Tell Howie and John I wish I was there too…
Ok,Im jealous that I’m not at the party too. But I am so glad that our district has people like you —TRUE PATRIOTS!!!
Linda Mullenbach
Mr. Laesch,
Thank you for answering my question.
With respect,
Heather
Hi John, Jen, Howie. So proud to have supported you in ‘06. yKos ‘08 is in your backyard, so we look forward to seeing you there!
This is really the future of politics. It takes incredible courage to do what John is doing. This is live, without a net, unscripted and open to all questions.
I wish other candidates would take notes.
Great job!
John, do you have any thoughts about why candidates are afraid to do what you’re doing, particularly when it involves using the Internet?
…a Union Carpenter?! DREAMY! Put that in your campaign ads next time, John. Right under that drool-inspiring photo of you in the jeep!
Pach, our Blue America candidates have the guts to do this, but the scripted candidates won’t.
Glad to seeing you running in 2008!
My question: How do you plan to take on potentially well-funded establishment Primary challengers?
For example, I have heard that Linda Chapa LaVia may be interested in running for this seat, especially if hastert retires.
How would you confront this possibility?
Go John, Go!!!
world-wide worker’s rights - yes!
i’m loving what i’m hearing… thank you for the inspiring words to day.
Of course I am in for this cycle, John — like Eric Massa earlier, we are all going to redouble our efforts to ensure the second time is the charm for you. And a quick word to Rahm and his corporatist Cheney Democrats: John Laesch earned another shot at Denny Hastert, so you stay out of IL-14!
We must end this horrible occupation — watch the “Had Enough?” ad for John and you’ll see the number 2,600 flash on the screen. Since that ad was made, Bush has caused the death of 850 Americans and untold numbers of Iraqis.
Thank you for making the personal sacrifice required for another campaign, John — best wishes to you for 2008!
========
Had Enough?
========
Hi Kristen and Jared. Good to see you again.
John is going great.
What Pach said.
Jacqrat @ 46
Yes, John, that Jeep foto crosses a number of enthusiastic demographics!
Pachacutec @ 36
I’m with you. Helped Eric Massa (and Victoria Wulsin, and ActBlue) earlier. And I’m kicking in again.
Firedoglakers, you don’t like what’s happening in D.C.? Support good people, or ‘Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate’.
wow!
thank you john, for bring up nafta when asked about immigration!
that is so right… in many ways, aren’t “problems” with immigration as a symptom of a messed up trade policy (and more generally a messed up foreign policy).
I’m waving to Howie now…:-)
Just tuned in and I am getting vlog! yeah!
Tell them both to smile more often! (When they can not inappropriately of course )-
their personalities come through when smile too!
May 9th Bush gave himnself power as the person who would coordinate the continuance of consitutional government in case of a disaster, ANYWHERE, that threatens national security.
This in addition to an announcement in the end of April where the DEpartment of Defense indicated that Defense Dept personnel will augument local emergency personnel in the case of an emergency.
They are building the groundwork for something and it’s passing under the radar.
The other great thing about John is he’s not afraid to say when he doesn’t know something, such as the background on the story about Bush’s self-declared emergency powers.
The problem with traditional candidates is that they’re so deathly afraid of people, so afraid of themselves and so afraid of making mistakes that they can’t run without a net like this.
They occasionally do it for private town halls, but streaming live Internet video?
This is really new stuff, folks.
John: what is your position on public campaign financing?
interactive vlogging - this is fantastic. thanks to all who’ve made this possible.
I love this format. More please . . .
The “people” mean nothing to the Bush family unless they have shopping bags of cash.
Question -
Any thoughts about the Alberto Gonzolez controversy and the Justice department?
How can we protect our votes in ‘08?
OK, I’ll find the video of Hastert..lol
Hah!
I’ve never heard a candidate use the term “blowjob” before, in reference to Hastert’s passionate call for Clinton’s impeachment.
21st Century politics, folks.
FDL breaks new ground. Again.
This. Is. The. Best.
Period.
(My Mac is fighting this vlogging thing tool-and-nail, so I appreciate any live-blog fascimile anyone can provide.)
In for $50 for John’s 2008 effort, with a tip to the ActBlue folks. Anyone want to match that, please?
Vlogging n00b question:
Is this live blog session being archived at C&L so more folks can see this after their fun/sun over the Memorial Day holiday?
I laughed my butt off on that one Pach…
Hey People turn off the cell phones, JOHN is on national internet
How about Senator Obama?
Will he show up to help out? He was a no-show last campaign.
$5 Comin’ your way.
Teddy, we need to work out the kinks for Mac’s…I tried on my Powerbook and had a problem too..After the Holiday we’ll have our other techs working on it too…
Kristen here. Good to see you all! Thanks for all the compliments and great questions so far! Keep it up! (And, as I was writing this, Jen whispered in my ear, “Keep the questions coming!”)
I’ll match 20.00 each for Massa and Laesch.
Anyone?
John Amato @ 73
3 Macs running here, all viewing this with no issues.
Oh, and $25 for John.
The DCCC seems to be more willing to work with us now, right Howie?
TeddySanFran @ 67
i can only do $10 today, but may be some others will make up the difference?
John, can you comment on how your international experience, spending time growing up in Africa, informs your perspective on world events now?
How has your experience prepared you for public service in a way that many others perhaps have not likewise been prepared?
newtonusr, what are you running? MY Mac was bought in November. I’m not a big Mac guy…hehe
Hi John, it’s EriktheRed (I’ve still got my yard sign, btw). As much as I’m against the Iraq invasion/occupation, I’m still more concerned with domestic issues.
If you remember it, have you ever given any thought to the autism issue we discussed at that fundraiser?
Has Hastert continued to enrich himself in the district? Has he done any more of those shady earmark-for-personal-profit real estate deals? Those seem simplest to understand, for anyone who lives in the district, because people know intuitively that the land’s value only went up because of the highway, right?
If Denny retires, who will step in for the GOP?
uh-oh… I hear thunder outside. :(
John, would you like to comment on Hastert’s role in the Foley coverup?
John Amato @ 80
no problem here on a g4 ibook bought in 2004. let’s chat after the end of the vlogging to figure out how to make this work for everyone!
John Amato @ 80
MacPro running 10.4.9 & QT Pro (3 months old)
MacBook 2.0 CoreDuo running 10.4.9 & QT (11 months old)
Pismo 500 laptop running 10.3.9 & QT (6.5 yrs old)
pretty fast cable with advanced firewall
TeddySanFran @ 67
$50 to Blue America PAC and $25 tip to Act Blue
HEY! Who is that “DFH” sitting next to John and Howie on the couch?
Hi John,
Do you have a favorite in the Presidential race?
If so, who and why do you support that candidate?
Best of luck in your 2008 bid!
Just threw in $50.00 for John.
MacBook with OS 10 and QT working very very well.
$50 to BlueAmerica and $25 to ActBlue
John, checking out your new website, and I really like the participation levels you’ve set up for sustainability. Have other Fighting Democrats adoped this idea (Ensign = $25/month… all the way up to Admiral at $200/month)? This seems a great contrast, without actually saying it, to AWOL-in-Chief’s Pioneer/Ranger fake Texas bundler levels.
Also, thanks for choosing purple again for your campaign color — it’s tremendously underutilized and very effective.
Jacqrat @ 88
Note to Siun: Don’t pronounce the middle word of “DFH” (you know it mean Dirty, f-in Hippy)
John looks uncomfortable on that sofa.
Regular chair for him?
Will there be a transcript of this chat?
Just curious,
Heather
What House committees would you be interested in serving on?
newtonusr, it took a little time, but it’s running on my Macbook Pro now. I was probably a little impatient…Thanks…
Any chance Hastert won’t run in 2008?
It’s great that John is answering questions, but I’m curious, what would he really like to talk about, if it has not already been covered? Or does he even have any questions for the community?
irrc correctly John was raised in Africa?
I it was transformational to me to see the contrast when I went there at 18.
Maybe get him to talk about the extreme contrast?
Vlog format is absolutely great. Really works well. Thanks.
America can be proud that we can still produce a candidate like you! I am proud to be supporting you. Go John! I am only sad to not be with you today.
Fascinating answer about the presidential primary hopefuls. Very intelligent responses.
I’d try to summarize them but we’ll wait for someone to do a transcript later.
John . .
What do you see as your opponet’s biggest weakness. How can you take advantage of it and how can the netroots help?
Rus
John –
It’s you the Democrats really have to thank for their majority in the House. Your strong campaign, as well as the Foley scandal, kept Denny in the district rather than campaigning for eventually defeated GOP House candidates.
Have you looked at the district to find the 40,000 votes you need to win? Will there be a big new-voter registration drive? Are you familiar with the discussions we’ve had at FDL about unmarried women and their propensity to vote (when they are registered and voting) with progressive candidates for progressive issues?
I’d be interested in knowing what you plan to do differently this time that you expect will make the difference against Hastert. More of the same will help a lot, but does there need to be a new tactic as well?
Great exhortation by John for people to get involved, and not just online. Become, for example, your local Democratic precinct captain.
I know a lot of our people do that, but it’s always a message that bears repeating.
Mr. Laesch, Illinois 14 has a robust hispanic community particularly in Elgin and Aurora. What outreach have you provided for this community, and do you have bilingual staff?
Hi again,
Just to play Devil’s Advocate here, Obama DID do well in this district, but you have to also consider his opponent.
ok, who tripped over the video feed wire? Lost it.
Okay, 5 minute break and then another half hour with John.
Just refresh your feed if it goes down, but they’re taking a break now.
Oops, just lost the feed. anyone else having this problem?
They are taking a 5 minute break
Ah, ok..:)
Can’t stay longer but wow this is great stuff.
Thank you John for doing this. You’re a fabulous role model for others to follow.
Howie? As always you’re doing a great job. Double thumbs up for all involved here. Thank you
They need to change the tape for recording, so they’ll let John have a quick break as well.
As to the tape, the session is being recorded, and highlights can appear later at C&L.
John,
What specific things do you plan to do for name recognition? Especially in the big population areas of East Kane County?
In the meantime, folks, for all you Cubs fans out there, it looks like Zambrano’s got his mojo today. Cubs 4, Dodgers 0 in the 6th inning.
TSF @ #105 - Excellent point! I remember people here bringing that up back in October, and this is the first time I’d seen it mentioned in months. So, thanks, John!
wow…. this is just the BEST!
John Laesch comes across very, very well. knowledgable, principled and committed.
hard/impossible to make this strong an impression w/o the vlogging. i hope there is more of this.
Please no baseball. The Yanks lost again and Pach is a Met fan and happy as hell…
Very well done. Even worked okay in Mozilla, which many things don’t, given it’s pretty much abandoned.
Hope you guys are still there. John, thanks for tackeling IL-14. Those of us in Lee County who have had a chance to meet both potential primary opponents still rank you #1 - by a country mile.
This time, everyone is going to be on board. We are in it to win it.
