Glenn Greenwald points to Tom Edsall's fantasy world where David Broder is the "voice of the people." I thought I would add my favorite Edsall moment, one he shared with Hugh Hewitt:
TOM EDSALL: [T]he Democratic Party and liberals have, through a lot of whatever you want to call it, politically correct and other values and programs, made themselves highly vulnerable to criticism that is difficult to voice in the workroom, because it’s kind of verboten. But on talk radio, you can say a lot of things that you think and feel.
HUGH HEWITT: For example, you got anything in mind? I think that’s a caricature, Thomas Edsall. I think…
TE: Oh no. I’m saying that favorably.
HH: I know you’re saying that favorably, but I think that’s…that’s not really what goes on on talk radio. Do you listen…
TE: I’m just saying that’s one part of it. And when Limbaugh first became famous…now, he’s become much more of a Republican. When he first went on the radio, one of his strengths was pointing out the foibles of the Democratic Party and liberalism.
HH: A proposition. The reason talk radio exploded, followed by Fox News, followed by the center-right blogosphere, is that because folks like you have been the dominant voice in American media for a long time, and you’re a pretty thoroughgoing, Democratic favoring, agenda journalist for the left, and you’ve been the senior political reporter of the Washington Post for a very long time. And people didn’t trust your news product…not you, personally, but the accumulation of you, throughout the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and they got sick and tired of being spoon fed liberal dross, and they went to the radio when an alternative product came along.
TE: To a certain degree, I agree with that.

Given the current state of the media, the Fairness Doctrine may have some problems. The idea of complying with such a doctrine may lead corporate media to have a Republlican on one side and Joe Lieberman on the other. All in the name of fairness.

Here’s how Dobbs frames the question on the religious people taking a stand on treatment of immigrants:
Do you believe the political adventurism of our religious leaders is a threat to our constitution and the separation of church and state?
No bias there. Nope.
Uphill climb in Maine:
A new Critical Insights statewide survey of 600 adults in Maine (conducted 4/20 through 4/27) finds Sen. Susan Collins (R) leading Rep. Tom Allen (D-01) (57% to 30%) in a senatorial general election match-up.
And George W. Bush doesn’t take vacations?
The new American ambassador to Baghdad, Ryan Crocker, told reporters flying with Cheney that the vice president would convey American displeasure over the planned vacation. “The reality is, with the major effort we’re making, the major effort the Iraqi security forces and military are making themselves, for the Iraqi parliament to take a two-month vacation in the middle of summer is impossible to understand,” Crocker said.

Does anyone else think that maybe the fine people of Iraq might want the gun removed from their heads while they think about running their country?
Edsall came to Harvard in September 2006 on the heels of the publication of his book, _Building Red America: The New Conservative Coalition and the Drive For Permanent Power_, his 2006 tome about how the Republicans are building an unstoppable political machine. He talked for about 30 minutes in a small group and then took questions. The gist, as I recall, was that the Dems were outgunned and outclassed and the Repubs looked like they had the whole game sewed up for the foreseeable future.
I asked about all the ways the Reps were finagling with the mechanics of voting, including the reliably reported problems with electronic voting. I tried to be clear that I wasn’t talking conspiracy theory but real problems that are objectively manifest. Edsall dismissed my concerns out of hand, sticking the metaphoric tin foil hat on my head. Another questioner backed me up and got Edsall to admit that there were some problems with new voting procedures.
After the event, I approached Edsall. He put up his hands as if to spar with a little smile on his face. That smile left as I told Edsall that he had deliberately and dishonestly misrepresented my question and me. I demanded an apology and got it, in a small voice without the smile. Then I left.
Edsall is held up as an ideal of the modern political reporter. Eric Alterman has praised him as such. I think he’s a conventional thinker caught on the Tweedledee Tweedledum merry-go-round.
I recognize that picture. That’s one of the deducosauri. It’s either olcootodon or velocibloviator.
“Once safely ensconced”. Like during Vietnam, when our arm chair coward hawk veep had other priorities”?
Once safely ensconced in Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone, however, Cheney appeared to reserve his toughest language for his normal target – the press. Cheney held a lot of photo ops with key Iraqi leaders like Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki, but was adamant about not taking questions. At one point, Cheney emphasized to the assembled journalists that “this is just a photo spray.” Later in the day, as reporters filed into an embassy conference room for another photo of Cheney they overheard him tell his staff “then we kick the press out.”
WTF?!! Just where might that be located? Somewhere to the right of Dr. Mengele, perhaps?

“After the cessation of hostilities, having professional U.S.-trained Iraqi media teams immediately in place to portray a new Iraq (by Iraqis for Iraqis) with hopes for a prosperous, democratic future, will have a profound psychological and political impact on the Iraqi people. […]”
The memo envisioned deploying a team of U.S. and U.K. media experts with a team of “hand selected” Iraqi media experts to “communicate immediately with the Iraqi public upon liberation of Iraq.” These Iraqi experts would “train the Iraqi broadcasters and publishers (’the face’) for the USG/coalition sponsored information effort,” while an “ensuing ‘strategic information campaign‘ …

In the Middle East, one doesn’t speak so directly as that. Its been decades since I was there, so I confuse my experiences in Arab Jordan and Iranian Khuzistan, so I can’t remember whether the following expression is Arabic or Farsi: “Chaass”, said while holding a hand to one’s temple with down-cast eyes. The word is the contraction of an expression that literally means “your foot is on my eye,” so it is on a literal level a message of subservience. However, the expression is also used in circumstances where a more accurate if rather freer translation would be, “That’s the most stupid idea I’ve ever heard! However, you’re the boss, so no matter how idiotic, I’ll do it. But there’ll be he** to pay!”
Of course, a translator won’t bother attempting a nuanced translation, and will likely stick with the simple “Yes, sir!” response.

Whadup?
I hate to defend Hugh Hewitt, of all people, but I think he’s right on one-third of that, anyway. When “talk radio exploded,”, which was nearly 20 years ago, the “liberal media” still wasn’t liberal, but was more so than it is now, and it was disconnected from popular sentiments in a way that would have looked ‘liberal’ to most Americans who didn’t realize that things like the Fairness Doctrine might matter to them. And naturally, there was an appetite for something different. But we’re talking early Bush I era here.
Fox News and the rightwing blogosphere, OTOH, were simply satisfying their base’s hunger for more news they could agree with, and nothing more. Hewitt is wrong about them.
