Despite having traveled to Iraq several times, Joe Lieberman's judgment with regard to his eponymous McCain/Lieberman war has been truly awful (just ask Michael Ware). Now Greg Sargent raises the question -- who is Joe getting his "surge protection" from?
President Bush may not be certain he wants more troops in Iraq, but Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is."After speaking with our military commanders on the ground," he said Wednesday in an e-mail, "I strongly believe that additional U.S. troops must be deployed to Baghdad."
Joe is willing to send somebody's kids to die in Iraq (well yours, not his) based on info gleaned from conversations with "military commanders." And as Greg says, we can be pretty sure those commanders are not named Abizaid, Casey or Chairelli. Now, I won't leap to the stupid conclusions of Michelle "You Say Jamail, I say Jamil " Malkin, who is still eating big heaping piles of crow after her high-octane temper tantrum about a story that never existed turned out to be a huge churning pile of self-promoting bullshit. Maybe Lieberman does have good sources for this information, and if so, it would be very valuable to the discussion if he'd offer up a few names so we know he's not dwelling in a Malkin-esque fugue state, completely detached from reality.
Sargent:
I've emailed this question directly to a press secretary in Lieberman's office. I'm not expecting a reply, but it's a question that Lieberman's people really should answer, considering that -- oh, I don't know -- a lot of people's lives are at stake here. It'll be interesting to see if anyone in the media presses Lieberman on this, now that he's pointed to the commanders who oppose a "surge" to justify his support for one.
Since Holy Joe gets to speak for the 12% of the country who actually agree with him, I think it's incumbent upon journalists to ask him what his sources are. Because based on his sage advice, many people (not named Lieberman) will surely die. It would be nice to know it wasn't happening simply because Lieberman was cracking out the happy pills again.

How long will Joe have to act completely insane to repay the 20 million in Sembler raised campaign contributions?
eponymous McCain/Lieberman war
just sayin’…
I would very much like to understand the source of Joe Lieberman’s funding over the last eighteen years.
the pope pretty much told bush he’s going to hadey;

Fuckin’ tool.
if he’d offer up a few names so we know he’s not dwelling in a Malkin-esque fugue state.
I feel an inspiration. Maybe punaise can help create an anagram on “malkinesque” using the letters a through g. Haven’t written a fugue in years.
Jane may write better when she’s pissed than anyone anywhere. Certainly better than Murray Waas, who I could sense was shaking as he wrote his Huffpo essay on being slimed. Somebody else picked up on that one, too.
I suspect HoJo’s sources are Maj. Cherry and Col. Pickins.
Jane — I see this as typical Lieberman misdirection. His statement doesn’t say that senior military leaders told him they recommended more troops. Instead he says that “after talking” to them, he concluded we needed more troops. They could have told him just the opposite, and he would still conclude he was right.
He did the same thing in the hearing when Abizaid testified. Joe came away from the hearing convinced that his preconceived notions were correct, which he then repeated in Baghdad; but Abizaid never supported Lieberman’s position.
Umm, I doubt that Marshall Wittmann will be telling anyone the identities of the commanders on the ground.
But, the very first death of a soldier to die from this “surge” should be promptly hung around the neck of one Joe Lieberman.
And every one after that.

OMG! punaise found the pony!
Jeesh, seems like only a month ago Joe was talking about how to get the US troops home sooner, rather than later.
Is there a lemon law in Connecticut that applies to double talking war mongering pudsmacks like Traitor Joe Lieberman?
I mean that in the most charitable of senses, seeing as it is Christmas time.

Shhh, we’re not supposed to talk about whose great idea it was to take out the Iraqi government, followed by the Irani government, followed by either peace on earth or armageddon, one. Third rail.

Here’s the answer…and just in time for Christmas:
Eureka,
I’m having wine and cookies. It’s a full meal. Patting self on head for having an excellent well-balanced lunch with plenty of protein, the one thing you can’t skip from day to day.
I learned that when pregnant and not able to keep anything down. The goal: eat one serving of protein a day, and a multivitamin/mineral. The rest could wait. The result: she is 23 and very beautiful. But I still hate dry crackers and herbal tea.

Senator Bill Nelson on CNN — saying US military in Anbar told him increased troops would help in Anbar province (but not in Baghdad?).

Come to think of it maybe it’s time to spotlight this article too.

Kudos to you for getting the baking done! I leave this in the hands of trained professionals, much safer that way.
Maybe lunch is the key meal for those of us who struggle in December. By the time it gets to be dinner, it’s just to **** dark and awful. I read in the ?Times about older people who get especially agitated at sundown. This strikes me as eminently reasonable.

Hang in there. I only got six hours of daylight yesterday. At least I
was ablehad to spend that time outside, where it was fairly bright.ET re Murray Waas, I would cut him some slack about showing emotion for being under attack. The early proofs of his book are undoubtedly circulating in Washington and elsewhere, certain power centers are being threatened, and surprise they are striking back. He is in actual danger. His response of fear is reasonable. I would not compare him with anyone here in that regard.
Asking for prayers and good energy to be sent his way.
My contempt for Joe Lieberman is about to surge

It’s funny that traveling to Russia in December helps my depression. When I’m there, I feel productive and therefore happy despite the fact that the sun rises at 10 and sets before 4. When I come back it seems so warm and sunny in comparison. So this works for me. Trip was postponed this year to January, but in general I try to go to this dark and cold country in December. Go figure.
Blank Kludge and I get equal credit for that one.

egregious, ET — re: Murray, he’s been really upset about this for months. As a fellow cancer survivor I can tell you, having that kind of private struggle become the subject of a public attack is devastating. He doesn’t have the resources that a NYT or WaPo reporter has to fend off that kind of thing, but that’s also why he gets to do honest, uncompromised reporting.
egregious @
43
Reading back, I thought somebody might take my comment the way you did. Sorry. But he did seem under a LOT of stress in the essay, which was otherwise far less cogent than what he usually writes. As far as investigative writers go, if Greg Palast (for instance) had a third of Waas’s style and a quarter of Waas’s factual content, Palast would get some better gigs. Waas may be the best investigative journalist around right now, and that estimation includes Seymour Hersh.
Speaking of credit…

Just left this on the earlier thread, but Orcinus has a mighty fine piece on Waas.
The “surge” people appear to have one retired general in their corner: Gen. Jack Keane, who helped the right-wing AEI think tank put out a pro-surge report called Choosing Victory: A Plan for Success in Iraq.
The Bush administration has latched onto this think tank report as their answer to the ISG report. They’re living in dreamland, but it’s going to be their spin that they really have a plan.
Maybe some bloggers who have more time than I have can go through the AEI report and knock it down (but please don’t claim to “fisk” the report, OK? It’s my pet peeve that some progressive bloggers have picked up this wingnut term).
I wonder how many CT voters are listening to what Joe is saying since he lied his way through the campaign, are they already regretting their vote?
I remember in the second CT Senate debate when he got upset enough to spout off about attacking Iran that he was actually being sincere for a couple of seconds.
Contempt may no longer be the best word for this horrible man.

JH on Waas He doesn’t have the resources that a NYT or WaPo reporter has to fend off that kind of thing…
But he has US.
Obligatory words to show I closed code.
Joe Buck @ 56
Cripes amighty, that didn’t take long:
* Victory is still an option in Iraq. America, a country of 300 million people with a GDP of $12 trillion, and more than 1 million soldiers and marines can regain control of Iraq, a state the size of California with a population of 25 million and a GDP under $100 billion.
The other day, the Army stated its active-duty strength at 507k. The Marines couldn’t be any more than 100k, I’d think. Where are the other 400k? Guard and reserve? They’re hardly the kind of force you talk about sending to some foreign land to fight an increasingly unpopular war for a protracted period, and even activating them here has considerable political and economic costs.
Lieberman statements in Hartford Courant re the rationale for a “surge”
Lieberman quotes
Somedays, I just want to go back to Connecticut and visit all of the houses that I canvassed where the voter was leaning towards Lieberman, I would knock on their doors, vomit on their Welcome Mat and say “Merry Christmas!”
Then I would feel a little better. At least until the next time Joe induces another nauseous moment.
OT, but as we were thinking about Marla Ruzicka and Rachel Corrie earlier, this from the Toronto Star:
Opting to avoid the dangerous liaisons of Middle East politics, the Canadian Stage Company has called off plans to bring the play My Name Is Rachel Corrie to Toronto, the Star has learned.
Martin Bragg, artistic producer of Canstage, said in a phone interview yesterday that he has changed his mind and decided not to make the controversial play the centrepiece of the theatre’s 2007/2008 subscription series as he was publicly suggesting only a month ago.

NYT confirmed Lieberman trainees are vulnerable in ‘08 with Landrieu and Pryor considered two of the top three most vulnerable. (Johnson SD is the third - hello?)
I am beginning to hear rumors of challengers (no names yet) in the midst for Pryors seat. Lots of folks are hoping Wes Clark will run for his seat.

CNN has a story about the umbrella organization for all insurgent groups offering the US a 30-day truce if the US starts withdrawing it’s troops. Plus leave all their heavy weaponry behind. I can’t wait for the WH/DoD response, if any. What I really expect is an increase in resistance activity in the near future.

ISRAEL RECEIVED up to $75 billion as emergency aid, directly connected to the war on Iraq. This amounts to 2500% increase in aid to support Israel in a war that they have claimed they are not involved in. Who is benefiting from the war on Iraq?
