Nothing like waking up on a Monday to find that Clash of the Titan Egos is in full swing. (H/T to pontificator for the heads up on this one.) Seems that Judith Regan, conservative screed Gal Friday, is smarting from the pink slip that she got from Harper Collins -- after finding out that it was Rupert Murdoch himself who personally ordered her canned. (Not, mind you, for the putrid OJ "How I Might Have Killed My Ex-Wife Wink Wink Nudge Nudge But I'm Not Saying I Did It" book, but because she allegedly made antisemitic remarks to a company lawyer, according to the NYTimes.)
So Regan has gotten herself a lawyer. Yep, it's civil suit time.
To understand the potential import of this, let's review who our players are. First, Judith Regan: what sort of gal is she? I'll let someone who knew her growing up set the stage:
Like Monica, she puts herself in harm's way to great narrative effect. Judith -- like Monica on the telephone -- is also a great monologuist on the subject of her personal dramas. For Judith, there is her divorce from her money-manager husband -- in court for six years -- which the New York Times has described as among "the most hoary and bitter on the docket." A conversation with her can quickly become a near-violent screed against her husband, men in general, her lawyers (including, at one point, my wife's law firm), and the legal system as a whole. Monica's Untold Story acknowledges "the inspiration provided by every pig lawyer in America."There is the father of her oldest son, a convicted drug smuggler, who was sentenced to a long prison term. And then there are her business battles, her personal vendettas, and her domestic issues (the details of which she seems quite ready to share with anyone she is talking to), almost all of which have at one time or another become publicity grist.
While victimhood is certainly a big theme for her, she adds a twist by being an avenger too. She may be the most combative victim in history.
Once, shortly after she joined Simon & Schuster, she entered into a dispute with the police who had stopped the cab she'd just hailed. The dispute put her in jail for the evening, and the story -- the Times ran a Madonna-like portrait of her -- immediately became an if-it-could-happen-to-her-it-could-happen-to-anybody cautionary tale. (Indeed, all charges were dropped.) As the story of the incident was being discussed around town the next day, a good liberal friend asked if I'd heard what the police did to the young editor.
I said: "That wasn't just an editor, you know. That was Judy."
"Oh," our mutual friend said, shaking his head, "those poor police."
And, just in case you've been in a coma the last few years, what sort of person is Murdoch? Well, I'll let Robert Greenwald do the honors on this one, talking about the sort of dreck that he had to wade through on Faux News, owned by Murdoch:
Making films can certainly take a toll on one's physical and mental health. I don't know how to describe the pain of watching hours and hours of Fox news. For myself and our great media monitors around the country, and the dedicated crew working on the film, it actually became physically painful as the hours of watching turned into weeks and then months. The combination of abrasive attack mode all the time, fear mongering 24/7 and gross amounts of overstatement and bias... well, it was no picnic.
Now, allow me to set the scene on this. Regan sues. Murdoch countersues. And litigation begins, with each side dragging in every piece of leverage they can against the other -- because neither of these giant egos can back down an inch or allow themselves to be seen as bending toward the other in any way, now can they?
And, since both of these people have spent their entire professional lives specializing in digging up dirt and dreck on their enemies, smearing the folks who disagree with them and just generally being awful to anyone who gets in their way...well, there is only one thing to say:
DEPOSITIONS!
Don't know about you guys, but if this thing pans out as a full-blown lawsuit with all the trimmings, I think Robert Greenwald may have himself a sequel to "Outfoxed."
I'd like to propose a title: "Dirty Laundry." Boo-yah.

I love the “pink slip”
Oh, and Christy,
I made the rum balls. used the toasted pecans. They are fabulous. I think they will be a regular part of the LHP cookie pertfolio from now on.
LHP — we LUV the rum balls. They are a requested cookie tray item every year. And they are SO easy to make, which is a very good thing for me.
Sounds like they deserve each other.
ooooooowwwwhhhhh!
Drama Queen, meet Crusty Old Bastard!
These two deserve each other - I hope it gets ugly!
And with any luck, maybe some of their reichwing friends get dragged into it. Limbaugh, anyone?
A boy can dream.
coffee’s ready…
good morning all…
diogenes at 6 — I know. She was Limbaugh’s publisher. So many putrid possibilities on this one. These truly are two people who would bring bazookas and a couple of tanks to a knife fight. If this lawsuit happens, it could be quite interesting for quite a while…I’m just shaking my head in amazement this morning. Good heavens.
Let’s not forget that Judith Regan showed such good judgment in having a relationship with disgraced former NY police commissioner Bernie Kerik.
remind me not to name a child (or a dog or a hamster) “Judith”
that would be wrong…
M.K. at 5 — oh yeah, truer words were never spoken.
OC at 7 — Thanks for the reminder — need a refill myself…
erm… did I say something wrong? I think I’m in moderation…
karen at 9 — Yes, and as I recall, they had the affair in an apartment that overlooked the still-smoldering ruins of the twin towers. Kerik was still married — and having a fling with Regan AND another woman — using the same apartment for trysts. Classy.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 13
Worse, the apartment was supposed to be available for the rescuers working at ground zero.
OC — I freed you up — if you refresh, you should be able to see your post. No idea why it got stuck…
OT - between Pat Lang’s article, “Stalingraad on the Tigris” yesterday and Larry Johnson this morning. on Iraq’s Catch-22, I’m not feeling encouraged.

perhaps there is a “humor filter” and it just wasn’t all that funny!
Depositions indeed.
“Deck the halls with boughs of folly
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
‘Tis the season to be lawly
Fa la la la la, la la la la.”
Well that’s the best I can invent before my coffee.
I have the small Peanut home with me today with the sniffles. We are preparing to watch The Grinch for the billionth time this year — and I have to say, it does not get old. Thank you, Dr. Suess and Chuck Jones.

Isn’tthat one of life ickier mental images?
yuck!
LHP (from previous thread)
I’ve been looking for something to refresh my mind on all the players in Iran Contra and the basics, before the Libby trial. But don’t think I have the time to read all of Firewall, although I’ve read parts of it (the intro and the Dick Chaney parts) ….any suggestions?
sick is no fun… kisses to the Peanut…
the LA Times put up a big article on the military special ops guys stepping all over the feet of of the CIA. My question last night was, “why is the military in Paraguay and East Africa?”… and remains so this morning. Do we have bases in those countries? Why the military? the CIA seems appropriate, but not the military…
linky
Robert Gates got sworn in. I don’t think he’s got any real power.
blue e @ 22
Not at this moment. But I think I may try to find some time over the holiday weekend to do a little research.
Iran Contra began for me when a firend of mine was proecuting Adnan Kashoggi (sp?) and an Isrealli general (forget his anme) for illegal arms dealing and he wanted to call then VP george Bush aas witness. She thought he was trying to greymail her.
I remember her telling me that he was claiming that Bush has “authorized” him to do it. he thought, and I thought, he was lying or nuts because that would require a total disregard for the Constitution.
Thereafter, as iran Contra unfolded it was a BIG topic of conversation around the USAO in NY.
No one wanted t believe that the allegations were true, b/c that would mean that teh Constittution was broken and it would be the beginning of the end of the “noble experiment”.
Maybe it was the beginning of the end.
WUnless we can find a way to stop the leaderss of our country from detroying the work of the Founders.
LHP at 24 — well, that is an awfully depressing thought for a Monday morning, isn’t it? The consideration of how deeply the roots of this malignant batch of cronies really does run…blergh.
Hi, everyone! : )
I certainly wouldn’t want to have a part in Judith Regan’s grand melodrama.
atdnext at 26 — Me, neither. Ick. But watching the whole nasty mess unfold from the sidelines? Much better spot for viewing, I should think.
egregious @ 19
OOOOOH, a new carol to sing!
[hehe ; ) ]
Good morning, Egregious. : )
Morning everyone! Christy, mad props to you and Jane for yesterday’s book salon. It was an outstanding discussion.
well, off to work… everyone have a good day…
is this week going to be 5 days of Friday news dump?
OC at 30 — It was last year. SIGH
OT, EPU from last thread.
Okay, everyone. Thanks for the comments regarding the NYT. I’ve tried (gasp) setting up a blog for the purpose of REALLY dragging them kicking and screaming out from behind the firewall. I have no idea if I’m doing this right, but you could try here:
http://mgpaquin.blogspot.com/
Who’da thunk it? A blogger… (snort)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 27
Yes, as long as we get to view the show from on high…
I’m not even sure I want a front row seat for the Judith Regan show…
Who knows? There might be blood spraying in that direction…
Oh Faux, have a very a-MER-I-kan Xmas. You all could walk off the job now in support of Judith. Ya, supporting the Iraq war was a good thing too.
Marion in Savannah @ 32
It looks good to me! I dunno, I usually blockquote any newspaper quotes in my posts…
But since you’re just posting the whole article, I don’t see any problem. Thanks for bringing Bob Herbert to us from behind the wall! : )

Yeah, remember Josh Marshall’s post, “Talk to me like a man, baby!”?
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c.....004223.php
Last Thursday WFAN Mike/MadDog were ALL OVER some ‘fictionalized memoir’ of Mickey Mantle which included the Mick in an affaire w/Marilyn Monroe. They were outraged. And noting it was the same publisher as the retracted O.J. book. I wonder if that had anything to do with Regan’s pink slip?
OldCoastie @ 30
Yes. Last Friday had a doozy, caught by Josh Marshall -
Looks like there’ll be something under the tree for all the folks who tend the Shrubs . . .
Ooooh, and it isn’t even CHRISTMAS yet!
Might there be some interesting nuggets found in discovery as well as juicy depositions?
Good morning! On Raw Story, I see this developing headline: Texas university objects to Bush presidential library …soon
Christy Hardin Smith @ 25
Well that’ the thing. It didn’t just spring up out of whole cloth overnight after the Florida recount in 2000. These people WHERE NOT CONSEQUENCED properly because Congress in a hurry to grandstand and hold hearings on TV kept immunizing testitmony and screwing up Walsh’s criminal prosecutions.
These folks got away with a slap on the wrists and came away from the experienced resentful and wanting vindication instead of feeling chastened.
They felt humilated and angry not humbled and remorseful. So they spent the Clinto years focusing on his sex life and petty corruptions like travelgate, all the while convincing themsleves that theywere superior. More moral.
Why, because they had been willing to risk jail to fufill thier policy objectives. And the fact that they didn’t go to jail, or didn’t go for long; PROVED that they were good guys. Heros.
In their own minds, at least.
Hell, Ollie North had the brass to run for the Senate! He has a freakin’ radio show. People call him up and tell him how much they admire him for his courage in breaking the law!
We are still reaping the harvest of Iran Contra. I have believed that for a long time. Just look at who all the really scarey players are today, and then check their reumes. They all go back to Poppy and his personal little spookworld.
These are folks who believe in the “Great Game”. They are the kind who love that Jack Nicholson line “The truth! You want the truth! You can’t handle the truth!”
They think they are nobly breaking the law, nobly violating the Constitution becaue they know better than the rest of us how to save the country.
It’s that whole “special knowledge” “recieved wisdom” conceit. Don’t get me wrong, these are people with very high IQs, with good eductions and formidable life experiences.
But they believe their own resumes. They believe their own hype. They lack a certain humilty that ays “I may be really smart, but that doen’t mean I have all the answer and that doesn’t mean I may substitute my judgement for the will of the electorate”
They think they know better than everyone else, so the rule shouldn’t apply to them.
And they learned that leon when the rule were not made to apply to them in Iran Contra.
Love the post, Christy!
The folks at Murdoch’s NY rag must have been especially good this year, ’cause Santa just left them a gift that will keep on giving through all of next year. Maybe they’ll put a fulltime reporter on the Judith/Rupert beat, and get them a desk next door to Rupert’s legal team. It’ll save time when thing need to be leaked by the Boss.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 27
You know, I think there is a certain karmic symetry to having Judith and Rupert’s stuff become tabloid fodder.
ooooh pecans instead of walnuts for the rum/liquoir balls?
great idea!!!!
ruffian @ 44
At the risk of starting a flame war: Pecans are ALWAYS a better idea than walnuts.
I always wondered how the two nuts could be so close and yet so far, like Viceroys and Monarchs.
Blank Kludge @

Personally, I think it has everything to do with Judy’s pink slip. You really can’t overestimate the pervasive power of baseball fandom in the publishing industry. OJ? shrug. Presidents? shrug. But soil the Mick’s reputation? You’re Out!
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 40
Texas Monthly broke it last week, and TPM picked it up. Those pesky liberal theologians at SMU are stirring up trouble . . . Seems they aren’t too keen on SMU becoming the host to the Shrub’s presidential library. From the blog of Paul Burka, senior editor of The Texas Monthly:
I do believe somebody’s gone from preachin’ to meddlin’ . . . and that list is just for starters, ’cause the letter keeps on going.
Maybe Raw Story has something coming that’s developed as a result of the letter over the weekend, but meanwhile here’s an Amen! for the folks at SMU!
Peterr @ 38
Outide NY and DC and Northern Va, there has been omewhat of a history of making UA appointments political. That really diminished during the Clinto years and there was a genuine effort to make USA appointments merit based.
That has not only completely reverted under SHrub, but they even put a Chertoff protege in to USAO SDNY. The last time someone put a hack in that office was under Poppy whe nthey appointed Obermier to sabotage the appeals from all the wall street convictions won under Guliani. It was sickening to watch
Just to be clear - I think the phrase “ethically egregious” means one thing at SMU and another thing at FDL. The latter is high praise, while the former is not.
;)
ruffian @ 44
Christy suggested it yesterday. Actually, she suggeted toating the pecans, and I did–really dark, and they add so much flavor and the whole thing is not two sweet and the toasted nuts add complexity.
It was a great call onChristy’s part.
Gotta head to the office myself. I have two days of depositions to prepare for myself.
Re the Murdach-Regan war I have to bet on Rupert with his unimaginably deep pockets. Judy is a “salaried rich” person, i.e., as long as they pay her, she rich and they stopped paying. He’s got the cash and a big team of experienced lawyers and she’s got squat.

Hi everyone.
just an fyi– Flynt L. Leverett will be on cspan1 at 1215 to talk about Iraq. (hope he brings up the Iran issue that the WH prohibited him from publishing)

…with the Who’s happy singing
Grinch’s plan then began
“I’ll be watching and waiting
I’ll then strike when I can”
“If I can’t have presents
then no presents for all”
He connived in his works
and his heart way too small
“I’ll give them sorrows
for smiles
and turn out their lights”
The sad Grinch
vowed to vanquish
them all with delight.
“My heart may be more
than 2 sizes too small
but they’ll have no presents
None. no presence at all
“I’ll send them away”
his cries turned
into a chant
“When I take all their jobs
at the meat packing plant”
The grey bearded Grinch
smiled that day,
so they say,
but the sorrows he made
would not go away.

But the NewsCorp legal team has a history of screwing up. Remember their ill conceived lawsuit against Al Franken regarding his use of the term “Fair & Balanced” in his book title?
My money’s on Regan.
My dog Jake on hearing about this drama queen Regan vs Murdoch
suggesgted that we have another NewYork Drama Queen
Judith Miller cover the ongoing saga. It takes one to really

My guess is that the Pink Slip was just a face saver for Rupert & Roger Ailes. The OJ TV special generated unprecented bad publicity for the Fox TV network. A torrent of mail from viewers threatening to boycott the entire network.
Ailes runs the network. He had to have approved that special. And he must have convinced Rupert to pony up the multi-million dollar payday for OJ. Regan could not have done this on her own.
In this case, she’s just a scapegoat.
