If you want to know the questions to ask, try reading Froomkin:
In another example of President Bush's post-election loss of control over the national agenda, the debate in Washington is now officially no longer about how we achieve victory in Iraq, but how we cut our losses. It's no longer about whether we withdraw our troops, it's about when....
Here's a possibility that I suspect you'll be hearing a lot more of in the coming days: That Bush's recent talk is insincere bluster in anticipation of an abrupt reversal (at which point, he will try to argue it wasn't a reversal at all).
In other words: That he's lying.
Marc Sandalow writes in the San Francisco Chronicle: "It would be reasonable to conclude after watching President Bush in the Middle East this week that the administration has no plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
"'This business about graceful exit just simply has no realism to it at all,' Bush said at a news conference Thursday morning in Jordan with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
"Yet some experts say it would be foolhardy to assume, just because Bush said it, that the statement is true."
Ouch. Although, I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that Bush is feeling cornered and politically lame duckish with a do-nothing rubber stamp Republican Congress which has decided to do even less for the next few days until the holiday break. (Can you do less than nothing? Guess we'll see.)
Here's what is up for discussion this week: the Gates nomination hearings begin on Tuesday in the Senate Armed Services Committee. Other matters up for potential consideration or compromise are detailed here and also here.

Q: Is he lying
Bush can continue to spout his lines and then the US military can say that the job is done and then let the withdrawl begin.
Bush gets his way in theory.

Q: Did Ned Lamont lose the race
at some point doesn’t everyone have to do a Jim Webb on this guy. Doesn’t every Senator have to acknowledge that this level of out of touch is what the impeachment clause is about?
The chimperor lost his codpiece at least a year ago according to any sane person (ck the polls).
He simply has no clothes and the world knows it. When does the MSM just make that clear daily in questions?
Are the Snowjobs televised? I’m home sick today and would happily LiveBlog if so.
Exit plan, nah. Plans are a sign of weakness for Mr. Bush, instead he’ll use his well-developed incurious logic and just have a press briefing where he’ll announce we’re now in the process of leaving, much like the Bremer exit.
Redd—I have been AMAZED that so many of the press- and even in the blogosphere have assumed that Clusterfuck is “stayin the course” because he says he is..
History would teach us the exact opposite- if he says he IS- then he ISN’T.
Clusterfuck doesn’t use language to inform- he uses it to lubricate.
It should no longer be news when Bush lies; what should make the headlines is if he is ever caught telling the truth!
Debrah Fisch @ 3
Yes and no. Lamont lost, but there is good hope that his spirit is infectious.
Oh, Debrah, you wound us so. NOT.
The outgoing lame-duck GOP Congress’ efforts to smother the incoming Democratic Congress and its agenda under a mound of unfinished business (such as the FY07 budget, which the Republicans should have finished up months ago, being that FY07 started October 1!) has been neatly countered by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi: They’re simply going to hold Congress open longer this year.
As a Kossack diarist notes, this also kills Bush’s chances of ramming through any more recess appointments this session. Heheheheheh.
Balrog at 5 — C-Span usually covers them, if there is nothing going on with either chamber of Congress on the floor. Check their coverage schedule on the website.
/would love to find out if the ambassador would appove gates
I might not make it back in time, would someone please ask him for me?
thanx in advance
Balrog– it will be on cspan2 at 1pm acc to their schedule.
sorry you’re not feeling well.
He cannot tell the truth. It has become pathological. Pathetic. And he’s the leader of the “moral” party.
The Boton thing is great news. Pops will probally put a Texas CIA Iran-contra type in there (mob rules= only appoint people who have blood on their hands) but even that is better than this Zionist end timeer S.O.B. Bolton. Enjoying this!!
From Wiki:
A psychopath is defined as having no concerns for the feelings of others and a complete disregard for any sense of social obligation. They seem egocentric and lack insight and any sense of responsibility or consequence. Their emotions are thought to be superficial and shallow, if they exist at all. They are considered callous, manipulative, and incapable of forming lasting relationships, let alone of any kind of love.
Anyone we might know?
Actually, there may be some good reasons for lying this time..
If Clusterfuck were to let the “withdraw” cat out of the bag– it might create chaos throughout the middle east- as each nation with a stake in the conflict starts makin plans to send in troops..

Hi Balrog!

Or this:
“Hey Helen, pull my finger, heh-heh.”
His mouth is moving, it’s most likely he’s lying through his teeth. Sad to believe that of a President……
(In my former life as a tv producer) I think this would make the perfect clip to end the montage:
[cue “You’re Cheatin’ Heart” the original]
Video:
clip one(?) I’m a joiner, not a divider.
clip two…
The claim, the [eventual] truth, etc. Rummy getting publicly garrotted was close to perfect, but this would be so…unbelievable. Since there is a void of ‘creative’ radar within conservativism, they’re just such enormous, glowing-neon targets for the Comedy Channel, the internets, et al.
I’ll finish with this:
start asking, “Name one thing this president has done right.”

That’s much easier to interdict, with air power or a very precise and temporary military insertion. We’d be fighting people who wear uniforms. Also once we withdraw, our “moral” leverage to prevent such a “unilateral” action is far better. It’s the kind of thing the UN might support us in.
What is so counter to common sense is “inserting” our troops as the Baghdad/Anbar police force. Withdrawing our forces outside of urban areas, where they aren’t taking any casualties, changes the complexion of our involvement dramatically.
(Can you do less than nothing? Guess we’ll see.)
In the empirical world of math, negative numbers are easily demonstrated. I guess we should be thankful that they’ve decided to do nothing because, I would contend, for the last six years they have, in fact, done less than nothing with very negative results.

OT - “We had a number of reports Friday that Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) was wandering the halls of Senate office buildings in his jammies,” Mary Ann Akers writes. “Two staffers said they saw the Senator wearing ‘tartan’ or ‘buffalo plaid’ pajama bottoms and a ‘loose-fitting shirt.’ By the end of the day, one informant called to say she heard Domenici was walking around in his boxers.”
Is Senator wandering around office buildings clad only in his jammies?

i think it might be bush’s form of yoga. he stares at his finger in order to stay in denial of the reality that is cutting off every avenue of escape and closing in on him.
“finger. make it go away!”
When doing battle, seek a quick victory.
A protracted battle will blunt weapons and dampen ardor.
If the army is exposed to a prolonged campaign, the nation’s resources will not suffice.
When weapons are blunted, and ardor dampened, strength exhausted, and resources depleted, the neighboring rulers will take advantage of these complications.
Then even the wisest of counsels would not be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.
Therefore, I have heard of military campaigns that were clumsy but swift, but I have never seen military campaigns that were skilled but protracted.
No nation has ever benefited from protracted warfare.

“We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace-business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionism, war profiteering. They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob. Never before in history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hatred for me - and I welcome their hatred. I should like to have it said of my first administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second administration that in it these forces met their master.

Top of the morning, Mum.
I shudder to think that I’m going to disagree with Christy (Please don’t hurt me. Much.), but I’m not sure that I’d call it “lying”. He’s so detached from reality that I think he really does believe the things he says. He really doesn’t believe that he’s going to be pulling troops out of Iraq. He’ll still be prattling on about our strategery even after the last American soldier is out of there. The other people at the old-folks-home are going to mock him for still fighting the war in Iraq. He’s THAT far gone.

Excellent quote, thank you! Do you suppose the current president of the World Bank feels such antipathy for our president?
Hmmm…perhaps NOT!
And didn’t President Eisenhower have some interesting things to say about the military industrial complex in a speech, sometime?
My prediction for next UN Ambassador: Zelikow. They can’t afford to have him, 9/11 executive director, exposed to a Democratic congress without some sort of diplomatic immunity.
For some reason, the photo also makes me think of this (apologies to KITH):
“Hey, Wall Street! Don’t panic! I mean, I’m only crushing your heads!! Crush you! (Looking at businessmen) What the hell do you guys find to talk about anyway? (In mocking voice) ‘Well, I like to put my money into Texaco.’ ‘Well, I like to put it into Gulf.’ ‘Well, I put my money in my mattress.’ ‘Well, I put my money in my wallet.’ You’re boring me! I’m crushing your head! I’m crushing your head! Hey! I just renamed your firm Merrill Lynch and the Flathead! I crush you. (salutes) Hail to you, wretched bike courier! As Harry Frankfurt described it, a bullshit artist is more damaging than a liar, because the liar at least agrees with the honest person that there is a truth, and goes against it, whereas the bullshit artist doesn’t care (and may not know) whether what he is saying is true or not, as long as it serves his purpose.

punaise 69 — in re: that horoscope, especially the bit about the handlers abandoning him.
I think this Bolton resignation is one clear example of the handlers’ absence. They are gone, fled, excised. Nobody has mentioned Josh Bolten, nobody has mentioned Karl Rove — just to name a couple.
You see, if there had been handlers working for him, this Bolton resignation would have been done on FRIDAY for the news dump.
We are now shet of that pasty, flabby git Karl Rove. His resignation will come any time now. If Poppy’s consigliere has done anything right, it is in his removal of the so-called advisors.
Polishing my shoes for the happy dance to come; although ecstatic about Bolton’s exit, I’m saving myself for ex-Rove-ination.

CNN - 11 Europeans and 1 American arrested on terror charges. I think it was in Egypt.
God calls another compassionate conservative to serve his nation:
“I have decided, after much prayerful consideration, to consider a bid for the Republican nomination for the presidency,” Brownback said in a statement. “There is a real need in our country to rebuild the family and renew our culture and there is a need for genuine conservatism and real compassion in the national discussion.”
God’s pretty busy with just american politics since the religious right started votin regular- he has no time left for other things like vacations in tropical universes- or even Darfur.
“Lord- you’ve got BOTH Brownback and Bush on the line- which do you want to speak to first?”
