Lou Reed has been a big supporter of our Blue America PAC. His latest gift to us is an unreleased version of "Walk on the Wild Side" he recorded in protest over the Iraq war, which we're proud to premier here on FDL.
Thanks to everyone who has been so generous supporting both the PAC and our Blue America candidates. As of today we've raised over $533,000. This is our way of saying thanks.
Walk on the Wild Side (Blue America Remix)
Enjoy.
(Special thanks, as always, to Howie Klein)

I just posted this on the last thread…
I just saw Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council on “Hardball” who says that the Repubs could keep the house and senate because of the new Jersey gay rights issue from last week and also Kerry’s comments. “I think what he said behind what he said this Vietnam Era mentality of the draft where you gotta stay in school to avoid the draft and if you flunk out you end up going over there in the rice paddies.” When Matthews questioned Perkins if he truly thought that was Kerry’s intent Perkins says “Absolutely that’s what he meant.” When Matthews states his differing view, Perkins further digs his hole by saying “If he said it in a vaccuum of never doing anything else to be dismissive toward our troops and our military than I would say you are probably right, but I would disagree with you. I think that it shows that many of the liberals just don’t have an understanding of how there are people that have such committment to this country that they would volunteer to defend the ways and the ideas of this Nation.”
HE WAS TALKING ABOUT JOHN KERRY!
I actually screamed at the television.
I like this one…
Lou Reed???
Thank you, Jane and Christy and FDL!
Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and John Lennon. It just plain, does not get any better.

Perkins is a Fox News Kool-Ade drinking nut job, who also thinks Saddam’s WMD are buried in Syria! LOL Clueless ; )
Roots and Lou !!
This Blue America thing has been an amazing innovation. It short circuits the Daou triangle. It leaves out the high priced wankers in DC, rendering them totally inconsequential.
It uses good homework, great writing, passion for justice, and constant injections of $10 bills to change the world.
I am so impressed with the efforts here and elsewhere (MyDD, AmericaBlog, DKos) to reinvent political funding. Hurrah for brilliant, participatory democracy!!
Cozumel @ 8
A psycho, if you will.
The appropriateness of the name never ceases to amuse me.
Angie from last thread-
Fortunately Mike Barnacle had a nice tidbit there at the end saying that anyone who was more fixated on gay marriage than on the war in Iraq needs serious time in therapy! haha
This link isn’t working for me. I get a torn page icon.
Ooh Keith in a green suit. I don’t like it. Did they ask me my opinion?? I woulda told ‘em.
“And the colored girls sing, do dodo dodo dodododo dodo…”
What a great fucking song!
Thank you Lou and a big thanks to ActBlue for getting me involved.
Hopefully it’s the beginning of a long and sustained effort to put quality progressive people on the radar of voters for years to come!
Scarborough show is blasting the Bush idiots on blaming the generals for Iraq mess. I love it when the right-wingers are on the run. And make no mistakie, the Republicans are in huge trouble. Nov. 8 is going to be sooooo sweeeeet!

Does it work for others? I get it but it could be because I’m logged in.
And just so everyone knows, Lou has been generous with the checks to Blue America too. But who knew he was such a big Tony Trupiano fan? I spoke to Tony today– he a total music fanatic– and he was going ape ’cause he’s crazy about Lou’s music.
re Tony Perkins: there’s got to be some dirt on him someone can dig up.
You can’t be that vile and not have secret vices begging to come out.
works for me
Not only working, I’m listening to it for the third time.
I’m using Windows Media Player, don’t know about anyone else.

It didn’t work for me either but I have a new laptop, and I may not have loaded Quicktime yet, can’t remember.
Scarborough calling Buchanan naive. God I love this!!!
OK, someone’s gotta say it: “Sweet Jane”
Scarborough to Buchanan, “I’ve never been surrounded by a bunch of cabinet members who got indicted either”!
raven @ 28
That’s gonna leave a mark.

I did notice the wikipedia mentioned some ties to white supremacists, but I didn’t read the whole article. I was actually looking to see if he had served in the military, but it turns out that he was a marine.

Pls. check my 6:05 on the last thread when you get a min.
I was just looking at some the $$ from Blue America- downloaded the data into Excel. What was interesting, in part, is the result of “average amount per donor”- actually it’s ~ $15 for a lot of candidates who nonetheless have raised a significant amount of $ via Blue America.
I surely don’t want to discourage anyone from giving larger amounts– this is more to say that small amounts- $5- $15 dollars add up to a lot, when there is such great participation!
Right click, save as, play in WMP. Works like a charm.
raven @ 28
When Andy Card was on Hardball earlier Matthew’s said he was probably the only one in this White House without a billable hour. LOL
Whoa… FDL and Lou Reed?!? Doesn’t get much better than that.
MP3 works just fine for me.

T- saw it. Not sure I can do, but send me an email with info at tenureransom at hotmail dot com. I don’t check that addy very often, but will to if I am expecting FDL email. Where are you doing the rush hour demo?
Lou Reed:
“It’s hard to settle for second best

Dial up (and Bill Clinton) is making me crazy! I think it’s working.

Ah…..thanks for that. I love Lou, and that’s one of my favorite songs. I was just thinking about his “Halloween Parade” song when they showed the NYC parade the other night.
montag @ 24
does he have mommy issues?
Wow, Lou Reed and Blue America on the same page. Perhaps we can take our country back.
lina @ 41
Umm, I was thinking about “Psycho” and that Tony Perkin’s character’s mother….
I suppose I was just mentally riffing on someone’s question from the last thread: “What’s in Tony Perkins’ closet?” :)

I was just over to Howies, Nice piece, man.
Every Monday he participates in the West Wing conference call with evangelical leaders. The group continues to prod the President to campaign aggressively for a federal marriage amendment. “We wanted him to use the force of his office to actively lobby the Congress and Senate, which he did not adequately do,” says Haggard

You know, it would be fine to have these whackjobs on Hardball, KO, and anywhere, IF they’d also have a respectable Dem on to Count-PointerCount them.
Lynne, you ignorant slut.
Fair and balanced would actually be really cool, as long as it didn’t turn into the shout-fests like Crossfire and others.
Um, Colmes does not qualify.
Jane @ 60,
The Junkies’ cover is my favorite, but don’t tell Lou. The only way I can describe it is like good sex.

I’m pretty sure Lou once said that the Junkie’s version is the only cover version of Sweet Jane he liked, so I think you are half okay. I like them both myself.
Jane Hamsher @ 60
That could only be better if it were recorded in a church with perfect acoustics on a single microphone. What a hauntingly mesmerizing sound. I’ve always wondered if Lou found it quite as fascinating. I wonder how Neil Young felt about Powderfinger, that one kills from the Junkies too!
Preview is my friend.
I’ll have to defend VG’s honor here.

Dobson Criticizes Media For Reporting Haggard Allegation
“It is unconscionable that the legitimate news media would report a rumor like this based on nothing but one man’s accusation. Ted Haggard is a friend of mine and it appears someone is trying to damage his reputation as a way of influencing the outcome of Tuesday’s election — especially the vote on Colorado’s marriage-protection amendment — which Ted strongly supports.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/2.....ion145_xml
Dobson is going to have some splanin’ to do to his flock. While he’s telling them to go out and vote LOL
It is great hearing the legendary Lou Reed on FDL and knowing that we have joined with him and Howie Klein in helping to elect a new, progressive Democratic Congress.
I hope Lou’s and Howie’s creative ties to FDL continue beyond Nov. 7.
Jane Hamsher @ 81
Probably the best indicator of how much he liked the C. Junkies’ version is that he added the “Heavenly wine and roses…” part back into his live performances of the song after their cover came out.
Metal Machine Music… Dance to it, harlots - I command you!

Or Cassandra Wilson doing Harvest Moon?

MP3 works great downloaded from Safari into iTunes.
Thanks for an awesome remix! Usually, I don’t like many of them, but this one is the exception.
I’ve been knocked out with bronchitis, and this made me feel lots better. :)
Not enought O’s in COOL
OK, musicians out there (of which I am not one): “Sweet Jane” is a classic three-chord song, right? who’s got other nominations? (or does just about every rock song fit the category)
I’m guessing VG will nominate “Louie Louie”.
In that oldies vein: “Good Lovin’” (Rascals, Grateful Dead)
raven @ 90
good call
punaise @ 93
Actually, Lou had a funny schtick in a recent tour where he explained that it’s four chords, not three.
Hey, didn’t know Lou Reed was a fan of Blue America!
I didn’t get to see the debate between Schles and Ned Lamont (too busy getting other people to watch it.) Ct Blogger is apparently working on the video. I noticed he also invites us to take a poll.
Ye Gads! What a night. *sigh*
This Janes Addiction anthem can only be described like great sex.
Swopa @ 95
damn - I knew I was out of my depth on this
OfT: Misleading “Voter Information Guides for Democrats” arrived today at our house, with photos of Feinstein and a bald eagle on the outside. These guides list the entire Dem ticket, and then take oddly non-party positions on, particularly 86 (tobacco tax) and 87 (big oil tax).
I later got an email from the YesOn87 folks saying that the mailers had gone out, not authorized or paid for by any candidates or party, but paid for by the tobacco and big oil opponents of 86 and 87. “Use this guide when you vote” they say on the inside.
The proposition process is badly broken in California — we need to get back to representative government without these hugely expensive initiatives bought and sold by BigBiz.

fyi - The HBO documentary Hacking Democracy is on now and quite *cough* revealing.
Md. Democrats Say GOP Plans to Block Voters
A recently distributed guide for Republican poll watchers in Maryland spells out how to aggressively challenge the credentials of voters and urges these volunteers to tell election judges they could face jail time if a challenge is ignored.
Democrats said yesterday they consider the handbook, obtained by The Washington Post, evidence of a Republican effort to block people from voting Tuesday.

Raven
Kirby at Connecticut Bob live blogged the debate and did an amazing job. http://ctbob.blogspot.com/
I’m in Mass right now so I didn’t see it, but from what I read it was very, very good.
The two men clearly like and respect each other (Alan & Ned) - they actually spoke about the issues. No whining, no nasty comments, no hateful glares, no filibustering and going overtime. Just an adult and intelligent discussion - making their different philosophies and approaches known.
I hope CT residents see the difference in tone and content. I’ve lived in CT on and off for 43 years and I truly cannot believe the intelligent, thoughtful people of the nutmeg state will re-elect that vindictive, corrupt and selfish man for a 4th term.
I still believe that Lamont can win. Lieberman was down 11 pts a week before the 1988 election with Weicker and down 6 the night before the election.
People in CT tend to make up their minds as they are walking into the voting booth. I personally had two people come up to me when I was poll watcher on primary day to talk to me about their inability to decide whether to vote for Lieberliar or Lamont (of course I steered them Ned’s way).

my thanks to lou, whom i had the pleasure of seeing at the latimes festival of books (not this year, year before) and even then he was speaking out against this administration.
as for “walk on the wild side,” as honored as we are hearing lou’s new remix, i still enjoy the party party’s mix of lennon’s imagine with lou’s wild side, as actually “sung” by george w. bush.

Up in my neck of the woods, there was this Zimmerman guy who spoke for the people now and again. I think Lou might have heard of him. He did a song called “Masters of War” which I am constantly amazed is NOT a daily mantra in our alternet media vein. In fact, I will consider it a harbinger of a true progressive tsunami.
What a great remix, I’m a big fan of Lou Reed. And thank you Lou Reed, Howie, Jane and FDL for doing this.
