There are certain things in life that one never expects to have to say. Things like, "Another tour de force performance from Charlie Sheen!" or "A vocal performance of exquisite subtlety and restraint from Christina Aguilera". The Mark Foley page-baiting scandal has added another of these improbable phrases to my lexicon and it is possibly the most logic-defying, patently absurd one of all. It is this:
"I sure hope Nancy Grace is all over this story."
See? Ewwwww. I feel a little weird just saying it.
I remember the first time I ever saw Ms Grace on some late night talking head squawk-fest. I can't even remember what the case was, but I was immediately on edge the moment she started talking. I didn't know if it was her adenoidal delivery, her plangent, self-righteous tone, her Crystal Carrington shoulder pads, or the fact that it looked like her hairdresser was trying to sculpt her head into the shape of a potted fern (with highlights!), but I remember thinking, "This woman is a total nightmare!"
So naturally, she's practically got her own network now.
But all that has been looking a little dubious of late, ever since a guest on her show committed suicide after a particularly bruising interview with Grace week before last. People have been asking questions about her journalistic integrity. After all, not ALL defendants can be guilty, can they?
But see, that's been Nancy's calling card ever since she got a job sitting in for Larry King. Since the tragic murder of her fiancé (or as she says "fee-AWN-saaay"), she has been on a one-woman crusade to mend our "broken" criminal justice system by obviating the need for trials, judges, and juries. They're ALL guilty. Just ask her.
No case it too sordid. No victim or perpetrator's feelings are too delicate to be smashed into atoms by Grace's take-no-prisoners interview style. If there is any journalist who can bring the Foley scandal to the public in all its filthy, perverse, creepy, and deeply sleazy glory, it's Nancy.
And frankly, it couldn't be better timed for everyone concerned. Nancy's going to need a bit of career rehab after having a guest shoot herself. We need the Republicans to lose the midterm elections in a spectacular way. The Republicans are running like cockroaches scurrying for cover when you flick the kitchen light on. Come on, Nance!! Time's a-wastin'! We need you to drag those teenage boys into the limelight! Make them talk about how Congressman Foley's advances made them feel! Make them read the emails and IM's he sent them on live television! Bring on the child psychologists! Can we get some of these victims to cry on camera?!
Nancy, darling, this is your moment. This scandal could be for you what Paula Jones was for Ann Coulter, the seedy spectacle that takes you over the hump from somewhat marginal hysterical crank to ubiquitous, omnipresent hysterical crank. Rita Cosby and Greta Van Susteren are good with this sort of thing, but they're just not like you. They just don't have the same snarling, wild-eyed prosecutorial zeal that you do, girl. This is the moment when we need our favorite spunky blond ambulance-chaser more than ever before. It is time for you, Nancy Grace, to answer the call of your country.
But really. If you're going to be all over my television from now to November, I wish we could talk about your hair...

And worst (best?) case, some R scumbag goes the way of her other guest…
I made that Schadenfreude pie from Whatever blog, still have some left. Here’s a bite for Mark Foley. Nancy, honey, here’s some for you, too.
I’d pay to see Nancy come to work one day after having stuck her finger in a light socket.
Twould be the perfect style for her personality. *g*
Aiiiiieeeee!!!
Who wants to bet Foley’s “blue dress” will be an Abercrombie-Fitch t-shirt?…
Why does she even have a job? ick.

Ew.
Can we get a subpoena for that?
“This woman is a total nightmare!”
Yeah, I’m thinking the same thing.
I gotta remember not to read Late Nite FDL right before I’m supposed to go to sleep. You never know what kind of horrific image might be waiting there to keep you awake for hours!
Thanks, TRex…next time, hows about posting a little disclaimer, like NSFS? (Not Safe For Sleep)

I said it yesterday… I expect this to be Nancy Grace’s reason for being now.
Copied from the last thread… did nobody catch this in MTP? Calling Lil’ Debbie!
OT: I’m still trying to figure out what, if any, object lessons the progessive side of the blogosphere should draw from the Torture Bill debacle. Say that all of this had happened the other way around. The right would have their billion-dollar think tanks working overtime to crucify the left on this bill, and I mean THIS bill — not a word changed.
It’s naive to say, “Why can’t we do that?” We don’t have their access to capital. But we have assets that they surely covet, outstanding blog sites for one. But, for example, blog sites don’t break things down and package them into talking points. Perhaps a system of wikis would be better for that. I’m just trying to think how to take them on more effectively.
How odd…. Not having television, while I’d read lots of quotes and descriptions of Nancy Grace, I’d never seen a picture of her.
I note, TRex, that you picked a charming one of her, one that befits her on-screen persona. :)
Will Nancy Grace dominate this story by virtue of her investigative skills?
I have my doubts.
Another thought: if anybody ever comes up with a photo of Nancy in a compromising position with Cardinal Law, should it be titled “Grace Under Friar?”
Folks, you’d just better hope I never have to use that pun in anger.
EvilDrPuma @ 22
Umm, you just did, I think…. :)
montag @ 21
Now that I think about it, she kind of reminds me of Joan Rivers.
I hate Joan Rivers.

Book salon rocked. But so does the Nancy Grace treatise.
She was born to carry this story straight into the sleaze-loving heart of America where it belongs.
Whazzap firedogs? Can someone spotlight this post to the CNN folks that need to see it, please? Sorry to hit and run…just got back from Pascagoula, MS on a home rehab mission for people/homes devastated by Katrina, and am totally beat and very sad. The insurance companies are screwing the policy holders by stating that damage was due to flood, not wind damage. Ahem. When boats are in trees above the high water mark (15 feet above ground level), it indicates that damage was due to a "wind driven" water event, not a flood. Floods happen with rain and water levels rising due to gravity. Boats don't end up in trees due to gravity or 20 inches of rain. As a member of the State Farm Mutual Company I say, "Pay these folks!" NOW!!!
This certainly is the perfect Nancy Grace story … she’d be able to do such outrage!
I have forgotten the details but there are a lot of fabrications and exaggerations in Ms Grace’s fiance murder story. But she still is on the TV with a bad show.
Pachacutec @ 25
Ditto!
Would love to have Sidney Blumenthal back again and again!
Don’t forget Geraldo. He needs to be on top of this, too.

Ah. Now I see.
I personally don’t think she will touch it, nor will any of the other shock harpies. There are no attractive white women involved. Can you imagine them having to flash Hastert’s mug up on the screen every 45 seconds? Ewwww!
MrWonderful @ 44
Respectfully, she has vocal skillz. in re: soul, who knows. In re: guts, yeah, that T&A Rolling Stone cover took guts. I mean who would ever think to use skin to promote a music career.
Whazzup with Rita Cosby, anyway? Is she serving up flapjacks at the Waffle House or something these days?

“Mark Foley, where were you when Natalee Holloway went missing, hmmm?”
Digby has a nice quote from Elmer Gantry that I think tells all with regard to Foley and the xtian wackos. “He had in fact, got everything from the church and Sunday School, except, perhaps, any longing whatever for decency and kindness and reason.”
This fits with the south Florida mega-church pastor who said he would still vote for Foley rather than a Democrat.
“let’s begin with facts of the crime. You’re guilty!”
Jane Hamsher @ 47
Dan Abrams springs her on us some mornings for an hour at a time with no warning at all. Just a horrible surprise right in the middle of coffee. Top of the hour and the rasping starts and no chance to go for the remote in anticipation.
Grace and Geraldo won’t touch the Foley story, unless he becomes a Dem in the next few days. The Dems will say no, but Lieberman might “reach across the aisle” and welcome Foley into the party. Lieberman is a self righteous bastard like Foley…wouldn’t be surprised if he had something lurkin’ in his closet…
Grace and Geraldo will blame Clinton for this somehow…Grace will then call for Clinton’s immediate execution. He’s guilty because she says so…
Jane, I put up a pretty good Mark Foley poster over at my place yesterday.
Can someone explain to me how Spotlight works? I picked out the people I wanted to send it to, and then on the next screen I entered a comment. When I pushed the “preview” button, it said, “You must enter a comment. Really.” Which I had done. I tried several times and got the same result, and could not send the message. What am I missing?
Thanks TRex, great post.
Thanks to you, I now know who Crystal Carrington is.

eeeeuuuuuwwwwwwwwwww!
you’ll need ptsd therapy afterwards.
EPU’d:
I’ve been away and I wanted to share a few thoughts that accumulated over the weekend.
1. Lamont/Lieberman - is Jane going back to CT for the home stretch leading up to Nov. 7? I will be. And I understand the BBC guys will be back for the last week as well.
2. John Laesch (Hastert’s opponent). Everyone needs to give generously to this guy. He has a real shot, and regardless of whether he actually wins, he will help to rip apart the Republican leadership if he can force Hastert to start thinking about his own political future rather than having a ’safe seat’ from which to do Bush’s bidding. Supporting Laesch will exacerbate the tensions between Hastert’s political survival and his loyalty to his party. Laesch is positioned to attack this pressure point.
3. The D.C. pages. They are out there, trying to find the courage to speak out on what they have seen. If any happen to be reading, I want to encourage them to come forward. History will not be kind on the Republican party of this era. Many of those now in power will be in jail by the time that recent pages are graduating from college. There is nothing to be gained by maintaining silence to aid the current pool of Republicans in office - their time is almost up…
IMHO, age inappropriate sex trumps missing white women.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_grace
The Georgia Supreme Court has commented on Grace twice, first in a 1994 heroin trafficking case, Bell v. State, in which it was said that she “exceeded the wide latitude of closing argument” by referring to the defendant’s prior convictions for violent felonies which were not at issue in the case[citation needed].
In 1997, the court was more severe. Although its decision overturning the murder-arson conviction of businessman Wayne Weldon Carr in the death of his wife turned primarily on other issues, the court made note of Grace’s court actions, saying “inappropriate and illegal conduct in the course of the trial.”[citation needed]

I’d be thrilled if Nancy Grace got on this–it’s right up her sensational alley–she’s a shrill idiot, but right now she could be a very useful shrill idiot. I say get her and her formerly conjoined twin Rita on this thing asap.
Nancy had better start talking about Foley if she’s going to have the huevos to put this link on her CNN home page: Nancy fights online predators
Her show is on seven unholy days a week, so I’ll bite the bullet and watch today’s show, which is on Headline News in 45 min. Transcript from Friday (most recent) has no mention of Foley.
She reminds me of Elvira but blonde with small tits.

I miss Rita (*sniff*). I think they dumped Ol’ Whisky Throat in the morning somewhere, so that anyone tuning in early can track the Missing White Woman du Jour. The hand-off from Olbermann to Rita was awkward — Keith’s distaste for her was almost palpable.
Looks like I’m going to have to check out trash TV now. Go Nancy! Don’t let those comparisons between your face and the business end of a forklift slow you down.
It’s Nancy’s Time to Shine!
On second thought, maybe Rita’s become her own Missing White Woman….
The NYT, via Americablog — Members of Congress, staff, could face criminal conspiracy charges in Foley case
For the picture selection, I pay homage to the late, great, Rodney Daingerfield:
You know what I’d like to see? A thread somewhere that catalogues all the things that democrats are doing with the Foley story (btw, I have yet to see/hear a clever quip for this–Predatorgate is so-so–anyone out there seen or heard a good one?)
So, for example, in NM-01 Madrid got Wilson to donate the 8k she got from Foley to a charity. I know Deborah Pryce’s opponent in Ohio was demanding that she return her Foley $$.
What is Reynolds opponent doing with this story? I really don’t see how he or Hastert survive this whole thing.
Sigh. Everyone was waiting for the Nancy Grace thread all along. I knew it.
Moving to lurk mode.
Cheers to all, B.

It’s time for these women to step up and protect the children. Really. So many in our country watch and trust these people and form opinions based on their commentary– it behooves them to carry the banner and get this story out. They are relentless in their pursuit of twisted human behavior and crimes of passion. This is a biggie.
Nancy is just your typical “RWA SDO”.

Mad Dogs @ 78
I think he’s just trolling for compliments.
But it does seem a little fishy…
Clicked through CNN this afternoon and two women were discussing the Foley story with breaking news still on the bottom of the screen. They both had serious concern tones and were worried about Foley and his family as if they were discussing a missing puppy. No concern for the youngsters involved or questions about the house leadership it was just weird.
I can’t watch that crap for more than a couple of minutes so perhaps they got around to other parts of the story. Sure was relieved to hear ABC played up the story this evening.
Allot of right wingers are seriously emotionally

neurophius @ 82
Especially if you look at it from certain anglers.
TRex, does The Graceful One have a number where people can call in with comments?
And another thing–that Forti pig from the NRCC, quoted in the NYTs as saying he’d be glad to take Foley’s 2.7 million dollar campaign warchest and spend it on other republicans–would be well advised to suggest instead that Foley’s money be donated to a charity working with victims of sex crimes.
Revolting human beings, the lot of them.

There really is something pathological about the rightwing. It speaks volumes that liberals tend to be positive, empathetic, engaged, productive, curious, and honest folk, while wingnuttery attracts firecracker-up-a-frog’s-ass miscreants and misanthropes who’ll stop at nothing to gain power, and then abuse that power once they have it.

Your right about the hair, though, if she ever trips, she might break it.
stranger and stranger, this tale becomes… I went over to the CREW website and poked around after I read that CREW had been given the emails back in the summer. here's a quote: CREW's Executive Director, Melanie Sloan, is a former federal prosecutor in DC. She prosecuted sex crimes. Her immediate reaction upon reviewing the emails was to notify the appropriate law enforcement authorities. So CREW says they notified the FBI in the summer? Who over at the J Edgar Ministry for Law and Order would they have notified? Was an investigation started then, or was this information from CREW's official who is a former federal prosecutor with experience in sex crimes just thrown in the round file? Or did FBI/Justice become involved in a part of the coverup? Oh boy. This is really beginning to stink like the original Watergate did, wafting up from the Federal Triangle to form a cloud of miasma and fever that hung over the city for years.
from drudge–don’t go there and give him hits–there’s no active link on the site but here’s the header:
WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach reports receiving an alleged fax from Rep. Mark Foley: ‘I strongly believe I am an alcoholic. On Saturday… I made arrangements to enter a renowned in-patient facility… ‘
MTB @ 81
It’s possible. But I think the majority are power-hungry bordering on evil.
I will be watching for excusing their egregious behavior on being mentally ill. Be careful with your accusations.
*waves on his way by as he heads off to bed*
I sent my message to Nancy Grace’s comment page. Thanks for the link. The page asks you to designate whether your message is positive or negative. I checked “positive” and my message was in fact very positive with respect to Nancy’s efforts on behalf of victims and against perpetrators of crimes, particularly child sex offenders. I told her I was counting on her to cover this story in a big way.
Hi back to you, angie. I just ran downstairs to read the article you linked to in the comments. I passed it on. Went to Hampton Rds today and saw block after block of yard signs–every other house with Veterans For Allen. Also, Thelma Drake (ecch). In the same area, Three confederate flags. This is a depressed area of Hampton–cookie cutter, tiny ranches in need of repair. The Newport News Daily Press had a front pager with the header, Allen Courts (or woos or something) Soccer Moms.

AND that’s zactly what I’m talking about. Evil, trying to hide under mentally ill. It’s wrong when we falsely characterize their behavior as illness, and wrong when they excuse their own behavior as illness. Sometimes people make evil choices.
Let’s not conflate their egregious behavior with people who are suffering and struggling with real mental illness.
