[Tony Trupiano joins us in the comments to chat about his candidacy for the MI-11. Please stop by and give him a warm FDL welcome. As always, please stay on topic in this Blue America thread -- take any off-topic discussion to the prior thread -- and, please, be polite to our guest. Welcome, Tony -- any friend of Amato's is a friend here at FDL. -- CHS]
If you go to Tony Trupiano's web site, the first thing you'll see is a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, "We must become the change we want to see." I don't think Tony's making a play for the small Indian-American population of Michigan's 11th congressional district.
Tony has had a devoted following in Michigan because of his popular radio talk show where he has given voice to the aspirations and frustrations of "regular Joe and Jane" middle-class Americans. He has a well-deserved reputation for standing up for the dignity of America's working men and women and never kissing ass to the corporate overseers. If you ask fans of Tony's radio show why they like him, the response you are likely to get is that he's a guy not afraid to speak Truth to Power.
It seems like Tony's been running for this seat for a long time -- longer than any of our other first-time candidates. I asked him why. He spoke, passionately, from his heart, for an hour.
"There's so much pain... so many people who are angry and have no idea what to do about it. I felt I wasn't doing enough with my work on the radio. I wanted to do more to help my community... to help my country. I know how to lead and I know we need profound and clear change in this country."
Last summer when he made his decision, he says two people were pushing him to do it: his wife and our own John Amato from Crooks and Liars.
I asked Tony what is the first thing he would do if he gets to Congress. He didn't hesitate for a moment. He went right to the roots of political evil.
"The mother's milk of politics is money and there's something very sick about the way we raise money for campaigns. I want to sign on as a co-sponsor of John Tierney's clean money/clean elections campaign finance reform bill."
Tony has identified most of the pressing problems that make Americans feel uneasy -- to put it in the most mild of terms -- about the direction our country is heading. He asks the residents of the suburbs west of Detroit (parts of Wayne and Oakland counties) to take a look at his positions and compare them to the malarky his opponent has rubber stamped since drawing his own district boundaries and winning the seat in 2002.
I almost forgot to mention his opponent, probably because he's such a total nonentity, just a sure vote for Bush on every heinous proposal he and DeLay pushed down the legislative turnpike, from No Child Left Behind to Medicare Part D to the War in Iraq, all things where Tony's positions stand in stark contrast to Bush's and Thaddeus McCotter's.
That's the clown's name, a weak, mama's boy, namby-pamby who a smart store owner wouldn't trust to leave by himself in a shop. McCotter, like so many Republicans in Congress, took a great deal of money from Ney, Cunningham and DeLay in return for his complacency on all their wheelings and dealings, but McCotter is one of the few crooked Republicans who have refused to return that money after each of these close colleagues of his was indicted, one being already in federal prison and the other two headed that way.
But worse than the dirty money from Republicrooks in Congress, is all the money McCotter takes from Big Business as a quid pro quo for supporting the corporate agenda no matter how badly it hurts his constituents. Big Pharma, for example, gave McCotter over $15,000 in legalized bribes and McCotter, as one of DeLay's assistant whips, helped make sure that the Big Pharma-written Prescription Drug Bill -- donut hole and al l-- was passed. Billions in profits for Big Pharma, millions in comapaign contributions and bribes to Republicans like McCotter -- and for the elderly and sick in MI-11? No re-importantion of drugs from Canada -- an even bigger deal in the Detroit area than in most of the country -- and no bulk buying of drugs for the needy; oh, and then there are the annual increases in premiums and deductibles and a growing gap in coverage for the prescription drugs they buy.
When the voters in MI-11 look at McCotter's record that's what they see -- on every single issue. A similar series of legalized bribes from Big Oil and a similar record of supporting their predatory legislative agenda that has dircetly led to billions of dollars in rip-offs of ordinary Americans. That's been the GOP economic policy: tax cuts for the wealthy, gigantic price increases -- which even Bush admits is a tax increase -- for the middle class.
You won't find a clearer difference between candidates anywhere than between McCotter and Tony. But, can he win?
In 2004 Bush won the district with 53% of the vote. His popularity in the 11th CD has fallen drastically to just over 30%.
But Tony isn't the kind of man to sit back and wait for a tidal wave of revulsion against Republicans to sweep him into office. He's far too street smart for that. Tony's grassroots field operation is the envy of every politician in Michigan.
His campaign may not have a lot of money for advertising and slick fliers, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts, on the ground, precint-by-precint organization it takes to get out the vote and win elections, Tony is more than prepared. I asked an old friend of mine at the AFL-CIO, which has enthusiastically endorsed Tony's campaign, to explain how Tony could win in the 11th, with McCotter rolling in corporate cash.
"This is no exaggeration," he began. "Trupiano has the strongest and most potent field operation of any district in the state of Michigan. Right now he has the wind at his back. He has a very good chance to take this race."
Tony's the newest addition to our Blue America ActBlue Page. When I asked him what CD I should give away to donors, he got almost as passionate as when I asked him about getting out of Iraq or about creating new employment opportinuites. "Music is the tonic of my soul. I would be lost without music," he explained... and then went on to talk about all the musical greats he enjoys listening to, from James Taylor to hip hop, classic rock and classical.
Well, since Canada is so close to his district and since a good friend our ours, Liberal Oasis founder Bill Scher, just happens to have an amazing new book out called Wait! Don't Move to Canada!, I decided that this week we'll be giving away autographed copies of Bill's books instead of CDs. The first dozen contributors to Tony's campaign on our ActBlue Page will get a signed book. (If you don't want a book, but still want to make a contribution to your nation's well-being, just add a penny to your donation.)

TONY!
Howie!
Hi Tony!! We need you here desperately! Is the DCCC still just asking you how much money you’ve raised or are they, ha ha, trying to get you elected?
Hi Maria! I think Tony should be here in about 5 minutes. And from what I’ve been able to piece together, the DCCC isn’t lifting a finger.
Hello all, this is Tony and I am honored to be here. Howie thank YOU for the wonderful write up! Let’s do this!
Maria:
You knew the answer before you asked the question!
Hey Tony — welcome to FDL! Thanks so much for fighting the good fight for all of us. :)
Hi Tony, welcome. It was great to talk to you this week and I’m so happy you’re here today. You’re a great progressive candidate and having you in the House would be a blessing for us all.
Christy, I have become a fan of your writings.
As I mentioned in the piece, Tony has put together a mighty field operation that is the envy of every congressional campaign in Michigan. But I don’t see the DCCC looking towards any of the Michigan seats this year. There are at least 3 seats they should be chasing– weak Republicans and excellent Democratic challengers– and they aren’t.
Jane, I was afraid my passion the other night may have scared you off. You caught me in a very introspective mood. I am inspisred these days.
Hi, Tony! Welcome to Firedoglake. I hope when you’re in congress, you’ll think of yourself as Tony Trupiano (D-MI,FDL)
I told Tony when he was only thinking about running that Rahm Emmanuel was a thug interested in the good of Rahm Emmanuel and not much else. Tony is a good person and he thought I was exaggerating.
Howie, this IS a winnable District. If the ‘establishment” doesn;t get it, my District surely does.
Maria…you are always right…when will I learn…LOL
Tony, does it look like McCotter has a ground plan to defend the seat? Or is he just depending on the gerrymandered boundaries he drew himself?
McCotter is good on labor issues but he is so low-profile that few politicos here in DC ever heard of him. Your district needs a loud voice, an active presence, and a Congressman who will represent them on all the issues, not just CAFTA.
Actually, he is now starting an operation, ground, and all. This is the first time he has actively campaigned for any seat he has held.
These conversations give me such hope for our country.
How is he fixed for money? Is the RNC putting anything into his TV ads or what?
I wouldn;t say “good” on Labor, although better than most Republicans. He still believe the Michigan should be a right to work state and he has done NOTHING about all the job loses here in this District.
Tony, how does the chip-chip-chipping away at the Constitution go down in your district? Are voters willing to go along with backing off from the Geneva Convention? Are voters OK with denying prisoners with seeing the evidence that is being used against them? Are voters happy with the lack of oversight exercised by Congress?
I ask, because somehow I ended up on an RNC/NRSC email list, and that’s key to what they’re pushing. Paraphrasing here, the message is “Vote for us, or Dems will repeal the tax cuts, end the protection that the CIA is providing in the war on terror, and launch all kinds of unjustified investigations.”
What are the chances of this resonating in your district?
(I think one of my lefty relatives put my email address in the RNC’s system as a joke. If I can figure out which one, I’ll have to come up with a suitable response. . . .)
At last look he had about 600K, not as good as most but it is enough to do damage. Word is that the RNC and its affiliates will not be giving him cash. But that could change.
Tony, I know you and Maria are pals but are you just letting her assertion that McCotter is “good on labor issues” pass by unchallenged? Come on, there are no Republicans around. Let’s hear about McCotter and labor issues.
Tony…. miss you on the radio!
1. Can you tell us about your district, urban, rural etc
2. what are the top issues you are hearing from the voters?
PS. $25.00 send your way!
I have been talking a great deal lately about the Constitution being in crisis, and it does resonate. It’s an easy connect the dots that transcends Party. Great question.
You keep fighting…low-information voters think voting against CAFTA makes him good on labor…they need to be hit over the head. Make him spend every nickel he has and make the the gop open their purses.
McCotter is scared. The mainstream Dems aren’t helping Tony yet the R’s are scared. McCotter has never taken a race seriously and he actually talked to a voter last week because he had to. Also - with labor - he has a 30% labor record. With tony it’ll be 100%.
The District demographicaly is all over the place. It is a true swing with 50/50 according to our poll.
Job, the economy, domestic issues and the War are power discussion we are having.
Are unions helping you as much as they should? Anything we can do to help pressure them?
Tony at 9 — Aw, thanks! Much appreciated.
Maria Leavey @ 13
We’ve all gotten a fine education in DLC and DCCC triangulation and incumbency protection this year, Maria. That’s why we’re just going to have to do it ourselves. I’m in!
Thanks Amy…and she is right on.
Maria, believe me, we have been fighting the labor fight more than we should, but we will always and forever be front and center on this war on the Middle Class and Organized Labor.
Why is Emanuel ignoring the whole state of Michigan this year?
Unions can do more and we need to pressure them to send more money and people…
Rahm is a numbers guy ONLY. That IS the explanation.
My campaign Manager talk all the time about will this be the race where they say, “we should have done more”. Our prayer and work ethic demand we do all we can. We need help.
The DCCC is ignoring MI because there is no money. With Tony’s race being first (as far as number winnability) then Nancy and Jim they SHOULD be looking to gain a few seats but aren’t because no one has raised over $200,000. Sad. They’re taking winnable races and writing them off - then wonder why Dems are frustrated and want to change the party.
45 days from today, history will tell a story, but it is up to us as to how it will be written.
I was just wondering — what makes a good field operation?
Also, its a shame that some of our potentially competitive races in MI are being ignored. There’s more to what makes a district tick than numbers.
Ask Ed Schultz to come in for a fundraiser…two top radio hosts might draw some dough.
I believe we have forgotton how to empower and engage people beyond complaining and bitching…I want to engage all people to fight for change and I want that change to be something we share. Something that we will wear with pride; pride of ownership and great courage. Our opportunity is now.
A good groud game is about lots nad lots of bodies. We have made great strides but need an army of people to close the circle and move toward victory.
Tony,
Love the “Cost of Iraq War” counter on the front page of your website! Putting up a map of the district boundaries would be a nice addition.
Peter…we will get that map up.
Tony, have the local DFA & PDA groups been active in your campaign?
PDA and the local DFA have been very supportive and have provided critical assistance to this campaign.
I like Maria’s idea about bringing in Ed Schultz (and maybe some other popular talk show hosts) to campaign for you. I think Franken has been doing some appearances too. I bet a Talk-show-a-palooza would get plenty of attention nationally. And these are your colleagues who know your work and respect you. It would be saying a lot to all their fans and to the voters in the district.
It’s sad that money is the benchmark of success in politics, and as I have struggled to raise money we have also been thrilled that easily 90% of out donations come from people, every day wonderful people.
We have talked to Ed, who has been very supportive (I have been on his show many times). The scheduling has been an issue, but we are still trying to get that going.
You all need to excuse my typing…I can only be excellent at so many things…LOL!
I am going to see Franken next Friday at the DC premiere of his film. I will mention Howie’s idea, which I think is great. There are former winger talk show hosts in Congress, and we all know Al is thinking of a run for the Senate…let’s back our own.
Tony Trupiano @ 49
Meanwhile, I see McCotter (not welcome back!) is raising money with George Allen?! How does that play back in Michigan?
More from the front page of Tony’s website:
Got me to thinking . . . here’s a few more for you:
Change is healthy - it’s how children become teens and teens become adults.
Change is healing - it’s how we take what is broken and begin to make it whole.
Let’s hope the MI-11 is ready for some change!
Is there one hard-core issue that resonates loudest in MI-11? And if there is I’ll bet that the differences between you and McCotter are night and day. Can you use that to make impact on the low-information voters that Republicans count on?
Those that hate McCotter see right through him. Sadly, the media ignores his transgressions, including all the mopney he has talke from DeLay, Noe, and the rest of the ususal suspects.
Howie…YES!!! Jobs, jobs, jobs. I have a plan. McCotters? Let the free market prevail and let the pieces fall where they may. He is a neo-con to his core.
Mr. Trupiano…
Would you care to comment on which particular voter message resonates in Michigan, that would perhaps be applicable to the rest of America?
I don’t know how many people read Arianna Huffington’s post “it’s not the economy stupid”. Well it IS in the 11th. We have lost more jobs than anywhere in the country. Three more auto closings last week, Yet Bush/Mccotter won’t talk to the unions or Big 3. Shameful.
Howie, that was quite an introduction. Mr. Trupiano, welcome.
We can all be as smart as we please, but in order to accomplish what we have to accomplish, we need dependable leadership. I see that in you and you have my support. Sending you an e-mail to volunteer.
The message is simple and profoundly in our face. The Iraq War has impacted every sector of our communities. The fiscal raping of our domestic programs and the way every community is being ravaged…that is a message we all hear loud and clear.
National security is anothe rone where Republican’s are missing the boat on. EVERYONE is paying attentionto what is being done to our military, our national guard an our wa of life.
I also believe we need people that will lead again, in words and in deed. People that have courage to show up and stand up. I am that person.
I’ve looked at a lot of candidates web sites, locally and around the country, both R and D, and every one of them fails to mention party affiliation, at least on the home page. You usually are able to deduce it, for instance yours has a link to ACTBLUE. Why is this? Why isn’t the title of your site: Tony Trupiano Democrat for Congress 2006?
Tony Trupiano @ 62
I am SOOOO sick of the us letting the R’s own this issue. Look at the mess they’ve made. And now our numbers go down because we they start their “security” lines. We have to fight back and remind people we are fighting the WRONG war.
I also want to be certain that when elected that the passion and vision we have shared during the campaign is the beginning of a public partnership that is visible and one that changes the way we lead into the future. Remember, “We the people…”
Mungen…I don;t have an answer for that, to be honest.
I live in OR-5 and I’ve asked that of both Hooley and Erickson and got pretty much the same answer. If it was me I’d be loud and proud about it.
I was just informed we will change that this week!
You can tell a Republican candidate’s website immediately: no mention of Iraq.
My opponent is terrible with the english language, often times writing or speaking WAY over peoples heads. It’s insulting.
Mungen_Cakes @ 68
I agree. I am a loud and proud democrat but I AM NOT a loud and proud member of our party. The establishment just doesn’t get it. That’s why they don’t back people like Tony.
I’ve noticed that for years…I think it is one of those political-consultant axioms that has become so universally accepted that we reflexively do it. I also think it’s time to re-examine that.
KPOJ in Portland replays Thom Hartmann’s national show on the weekend, and I caught the end of an interview with you, Tony. Thom mentioned you have your own theme song. Is that available on your website?
If it weren’t for his voting record, I might not know what he stands for.
Yes, there are actually two songs, my customeized version of Have You Had Enough and another one. You can listen right on the site.
To go back to Howie’s idea of a talk-show hostathon, people like Thom and the Young Turks and Rachel Maddow, etc. could call in. I bet there’d be a lot who would want to help
I am a proud Democrat as well and a proud Progressive. We should celebrate our passion, not hide it.
Let’s figure it out and set it up.
We will not win until we decide that action is more than just a word and leadership means more than shoing up. When are are strong, bold, and show real solutions, no one will be able to ignore the majority cry of a country that demand leadership. Make sense?
Maria, we are happy t help anyone that want to do this with us. Please reach out and we will do whatever it takes.
I am willing to lead. I am willing to work. I am willing to include all of you in that journey. Winning alone won;t change a thing if we do nothing with it.
What are your thoughts on legislation that could protect American jobs? Mine is going overseas, there’s no doubt that I will be hard pressed to keep up my family’s standard of living.
let’s talk about it this week Tony. How helpful has Dean been? Maybe he could be special call-in guest.
Howie - you always introduce us to such awesome candidates and Tony is sure one of them!
be back in a second, gotta hit that Blue America page and send a little cash Tony’s way! We so desperately need his voice in DC!
We need FAIR trade agreements, NOT free trade agreements. We already have laws that protec tour jobs BUT when the people who break these laws own all our debt we are powerless and unwilling to hold them to the law. This is shameful, at the very least.
Dean has done nothing but take a picture with me.
My favorite:
“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” —The Elders, Oraibi, Arizona Hopi Nation
Welcome to FDL - wish there were more like you.
I read Ariana’s piece on the economy not being an issue, but come on. Yes, Iraq is number one, but why not tie it to the economy, especially in places like MI that are being gutted right now? So much money is being wasted in Iraq because of cronyism and no-bid contracts that should be invested in America instead.
And that’s not even getting into the fact that we should never have gone into Iraq at all.
I have been talking a lot lately about my race, for me anyway, being about what is possible; what is real, and what is profoundly ours to protect. That resonates with people in a big way, and it should.
You properly deduced where my job is going. Which laws are you suggesting are being broken? And how would that help me keep my job? I think there should be a penalty for investing in offshore manufacturing in addition to tariffs.
It looks like you score much better than McCotter according to AARP, have they endorsed you, Tony?
The Other…they ARE tied together and you don’t nee dslight of hand to connect those dots.
Mun…I’m actually not sure what job you have, but the free trade agreements are tattered and torn. Everything from wages ion othe rcountries, to taxes and tarriffs. We are getting it wrong at every turn.
The AARP does not endorse.
Tony Trupiano @
49
Tony, I am so broke right now it’s pitiful, but I sent you $10. It’s not much, but if everyone reading this who thinks “Oh, ten dollars (or five dollars) won’t make a difference” would just send you ten dollars or five dollars — I wonder how much you’d raise?
Wouldn’t that be interesting to know? After all, the Liliputians were only able to tie Gulliver down because they each contributed their little part.
$1, $5, $10 is ALL makes a difference.
So you’re saying that wages are being illegaly supressed off shore? I’m an electrical engineer who for the last year has been training my replacements.
Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.
Mungen_Cakes @ 70
And that is also true of plenty of DCCC-type Democrats– either no mention of Iraq or a very mild gobblygook mention that means almost nothing. I fear we’re going to wind up with lots of Francine Busbys on November 8– the DCCC candidates, who listen to Emanuel’s lame advice. But the men and women who visit us here at Firedoglake don’t fit into the category. We’ve been talking with the candidates who are as angry about Iraq as the American people are.
Tony - has the Ford situation impacted your race? I would imagine the news from them is shaking people up a lot.
And why not, these countries OWN our debt! Why would we fight something when we are coning from a position of weakness so often. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
One of the plants is in the heart of my District (Wixom Plant). A few more are threatened. Yes, we are payng attention but we need control to turn this around and fast.
Tony, I have to take off but let’s talk next week. You’re the best, on air and off!
This link will take you to my position on jobs and the economy:
http://www.tony4congress2006.com/yi_thejobs.htm
Tony, you sound great. You’re saying all the things a congressman with half a brain should be saying.
How will you make real change happen when you get in? What are some of the first things you want to see accomplished in the next congress?
Thanks, Maria. I will call you. ARe you around tomorrow evening at all?
Linda:
Minimum Wage increase
Campaign Finance Reform
Single Payer Health Care
Accountability for the War
Real Homeland Security
Meaningful and purposeful legislation that move smore young people in higher Ed
That’s for starters!
Headed to NY right now…back Monday.
I’ll call you Tuesday.
Tony Trupiano @
51
There is something comforting and exciting in a Congressman who uses the term LOL!
Tony, good luck with your race. You sound great. Question, your field operation, descibed above as potent; and above, in an answer you said it had to do with bodies on the ground (paraphrasing you); for those of us with tough races in other states, any tips on attracting all those bodies to volunteer? How’d you assemble your team?
I know my internet jargon!
Tony Trupiano @ 107
Did I die and go to some country that has a democratic form of government?
Tony Trupiano @ 94
It might still be worth highlighting the link on your site, perhaps in your healthcare section.
If I’m elected, yeah, you bet!
Mr. Trupiano…
Is there a way to get Democrats who support keeping the troops in Iraq to change their minds on this crucial issue?
LindaR @ 110
ONE OF US! ONE OF US! GABBA GABBA HEY!
Yes, I believe there is, but we have to demand more of our Military leaders and we must make sure we are doing what they are asking. I’m not sure we are.
I might also suggest that the currently elected member of Congress actually ask people in their Distirct what they want. They may be surprised.
There is nothing radical in wanting peace, protection, and honesty. There is nothing radical in being brave in defending our point of view. I think the American people have been anxious to see progress ANYWHERE not just in Iraq. Our leaders are failing us and we must demand change.
Of course the Real Wage Insurance idea appeals to me. There are similar programs, for instance if someone’s job does get outsourced it’s possible to get education for free. How would the real wage insurance be funded?
