I am as furious as I can ever remember being at the moment. LHP sent me a link this morning to a WaPo article, and I only got about seven paragraphs into it before I had to stand up and walk around the house a while before I could read any more of the article. Here's what cause my sharp intake of breath and increasing feeling of rage:
The clandestine U.S. commandos whose job is to capture or kill Osama bin Laden have not received a credible lead in more than two years. Nothing from the vast U.S. intelligence world -- no tips from informants, no snippets from electronic intercepts, no points on any satellite image -- has led them anywhere near the al-Qaeda leader, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials."The handful of assets we have have given us nothing close to real-time intelligence" that could have led to his capture, said one counterterrorism official, who said the trail, despite the most extensive manhunt in U.S. history, has gone "stone cold."
But in the last three months, following a request from President Bush to "flood the zone," the CIA has sharply increased the number of intelligence officers and assets devoted to the pursuit of bin Laden. The intelligence officers will team with the military's secretive Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and with more resources from the National Security Agency and other intelligence agencies....
Intelligence officials think that bin Laden is hiding in the northern reaches of the autonomous tribal region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. This calculation is based largely on a lack of activity elsewhere and on other intelligence, including a videotape, obtained exclusively by the CIA and not previously reported, that shows bin Laden walking on a trail toward Pakistan at the end of the battle of Tora Bora in December 2001, when U.S. forces came close but failed to capture him.
Many factors have combined in the five years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to make the pursuit more difficult. They include the lack of CIA access to people close to al-Qaeda's inner circle; Pakistan's unwillingness to pursue him; the reemergence of the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan; the strength of the Iraqi insurgency, which has depleted U.S. military and intelligence resources; and the U.S. government's own disorganization. (emphasis mine)
You think the GOP-U-Drama about to be broadcast on ABC/Disney includes a scene showing George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld giving the order for forces to stand down in Tora Bora, with a flash to Bin Laden walking away unscathed toward the territory of our good old ally, Pakistan? You think the Director's CIA folks told them about that -- or would they even use it if they knew? Doubt it -- doesn't fit the political world view and agenda of a "blame Bill Clinton" group of financiers, does it?
They apparently have made a few changes to the GOP-U-Drama, if it airs here the same as it has already aired in New Zealand. I got an e-mail from a reader living there -- Kevin Jon Heller who blogs at Opinio Juris -- and I thought I'd share it with everyone else. Here's what things looked like in NZ's version of the film:
To the best of my knowledge -- which comes from E&P's summary -- there are only three changes, all very, very minor:1. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the program. It is never repeated.
2. Berger does not hang up on the snatch team in Afghanistan -- the scene ends with him staring straight ahead, not responding to Tenet.
3. After Massoud asks if everyone in Washington is a coward, there is no cut to Clinton.
Other than that, the Berger scene is exactly the same. And the Albright scene has not been touched. Even the scene with the reporter saying that "pundits" are blaming the Sudan bombing on Clinton's desire to divert attention from Lewinsky is still there.
"The Path to 9/11" -- Part One
Opens with disclaimer. (Never repeats it.)
Notes the film is based in part on “The Cell.”
Quotes the 9/11 Commission Report about the need to get the history right!
Includes the scene where “American Airlines” lets Atta onto the plane despite the warning.
Includes scene with Berger and Tenet worrying about the snatch.
Includes the scene with Clarke telling O’Neill that the Administration is worried about political fallout and legalities, view terrorism as a law and order problem.
Includes the cut from “covering your own ass…” to Clinton denying sexual relations with Lewinsky.
Includes O’Neill telling Clarke that Clinton’s refusal to order the killing is “pathetic.”
Includes the call to Langley for approval to snatch bin Laden. Berger says he doesn’t have the authority, they’re not on the same page, he’s worried about the intel.
Deletes the hang-up – the scene ends with Berger staring straight ahead, not responding to Tenet’s angry statement about the buck stopping with him after Berger tells him he can recommend the snatch to Clinton.
Deletes the cut to Clinton after Massoud asks if they are "all cowards in Washington."
Includes “Patricia” blaming Tenet for not ordering the strike on bin Laden when they had the chance.
Includes O’Neill insisting Clinton has to do something, has to act.
Includes Albright saying they have to focus on bin Laden, not on the Taliban, because the latter is too major of an operation and the President is not willing to go that far.
Includes the reporter in the Sudan saying that Republicans and pundits are accusing Clinton of ordering the attack to divert attention from Lewinsky.
Includes Massoud claiming that Washington informed Pakistan of the Afghanistan strike.
Includes Albright confirming that the Administration warned the Pakistanis because of “regional factors” and Berger mentioning the problems with covert action.
Includes O’Neill praising Tenet’s “cojones.”
Includes the mock assassination of Clinton.
So it looks like the wingnut brigades who are more interested in political revenge than honesty will be happy -- but I am just plain disgusted. And I can't imagine that Part II will be any more historically accurate. Shame on ABC and Disney.
A reader with ties to Hollywood sends in the following question about ABC/Disney:
When networks do "docudramas" they have standards and practices department that goes over this with fine tooth comb... what happened here? Who was doing the fact checking? Who looked over the script and approved stuff that never happened?
I'd like to know the answer to that myself, because I happen to know that the legal department for television and movies, in the same way that they do for publishing, normally goes over all of the facts and representations with a nitpicky fine-toothed comb that demands accountability for every tiny detail. Where were they on this film? This is exactly the nightmare scenario that give lawyers ulcers and sleepless nights: fact free defamatory moments that tie you up in litigation for the rest of your freaking life. Unless, of course, there was either complete incompetence (hello shareholders demanding accountability) or an agenda that disregarded potential litigation (um...yeah...accountability would go double here).
It is worth a reminder that several leading historians sent a letter to Robert Iger saying that this GOP-U-Drama should be pulled:
Dear Robert Iger:
We write as professional historians, who are deeply concerned by the continuing reports about ABC’s scheduled broadcast of “The Path to 9/11.” These reports document that this drama contains numerous flagrant falsehoods about critical events in recent American history. The key participants and eyewitnesses to these events state that the script distorts and even fabricates evidence into order to mislead viewers about the responsibility of numerous American officials for allegedly ignoring the terrorist threat before 2000.
The claim by the show’s producers, broadcaster, and defenders, that these falsehoods are permissible because the show is merely a dramatization, is disingenuous and dangerous given their assertions that the show is also based on authoritative historical evidence. Whatever ABC’s motivations might be, broadcasting these falsehoods, connected to the most traumatic historical event of our times, would be a gross disservice to the public. A responsible broadcast network should have nothing to do with the falsification of history, except to expose it. We strongly urge you to halt the show’s broadcast and prevent misinforming Americans about their history.
Sincerely,
Arthur Schlesinger

The losses suffered by Americans on 9/11 should not be trivialized by a manipulative, false, anti-historical piece of fiction masquerading as fact to manipulate the public. That is so far from what ought to be considered ethical or responsible, and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves, if they had any scruples left at all.
At long last, ABC and Disney and every single person involved in this craptastic GOP-U-Drama, have you no shame?

The No’s can go forever. I am watching This Week right now….this very well may be the last ABC program I ever watch.
Cheney doesn’t buy the poll cited or the premise of Tim’s question…he disagrees with everything Tim poses.
He just called the Pakistanis Paks– insulting and dangerous bloodthirsty maniac.
Tim is doing a fine job, i must say.
I didn’t really think this information would ever emerge into the blogosphere much less the lickspittle corporate media.
Of course Bush pulled the pursuit off OBL. The last thing he and Cheney want is to catch Osama. He is their most valuable tool in the suppression of dissent and the destruction of our freedom here at home.
Fortunately, many Americans are now aware that Bush and Cheney and the people who put them in power, no I don’t mean the Supreme Court, do not have America’s best interests at heart.
OBL has lost much of his ’scare power’ due to The Idiot’s mishandling of the ‘OBL wants to blow up your bingo game…’ meme so I don’t think we will see or hear much about him personally in this ‘be afraid’ campaign the Bushist scum are trying to mount to cling to power.
It will be more lies about Iraq as even the AssClowns like Mehlman and Frist know that Iraq is killing them politically.
I don’t put it past OBL to try another ‘I’m comin’ to git ya…’ video though. He is no doubt well aware that his facilitator Bush would be in trouble with a Democratic Congress.
Put please let’s put to bed the idea that Bush and his cabal ever wanted to catch Osama.
They didn’t and they still have no interest in ever doing so.

I believe this makes me so angry because it is obvious, provable lies and I now feel powerless to stop it.
TPMCafe:
John Beug, the widowed husband of Carolyn Beug, a former vice president at Walt Disney Records who was on the plane that slammed into 1 World Trade Center, has written a letter to Disney chief Bob Iger pleading with him not to run the film.
Dear Mr. Iger,
I have seen the advertisements for and read the press coverage of ABC’s film, “The Path to 9/11,” that your network plans to air this Sunday and Monday to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. I am writing to express my concern and deep reservations about this film and to ask you, out of respect for the victims of 9/11 and their families, not to air it.
My wife worked for the Walt Disney Corporation and was a victim of the terrorist attacks as a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11. I have great respect for you and your company and I know that you must have worked hard to make a good film. Admittedly, I have not seen it. However, accounts from those who have suggest that it contains inaccurate and invented scenes. It seems to me that fictionalizing this tragedy does not honor the memory of those who were lost on September 11th.
Given the gravity of this event for our nation and the personal loss I suffered, I believe it is critically important that we do everything possible to prevent another 9/11. That begins with making sure that we are united in our understanding of what we could have done better in the years, months and weeks leading up to the attacks of 2001. I am deeply concerned that Americans will watch this film and not fully understand –- or be led to misunderstand -– the true history of this tragedy.
I feel the 9/11 Commission Report was a correct and very responsible accounting of the terrorist attacks of 2001. Since “The Path to 9/11” deviates from this report in key instances, I strongly and respectfully urge you not to air this film.
Sincerely,
John Beug

What’s Matt Stoller’s argument? That Disney’s willing to put itself this massively at risk for Pataki?

I think they will catch someone they call OBL… may not be the real guy (how about the osama guy with the “I heart Lamont sign?)
Strange bedfellows Bush and OBL: each succeeding because of the other. Thanks to OBL, Bush keeps us wrapped in fear, rubberstamping everything he wants and thanks to GWB, OBL meets his recruitment numbers each month. Isn’t this the best working relationship two people ever had?
Remember there were only 36 special forces at Tora Bora.

I agree with what has been posted so far, but want to add: Even if it was based on the Commission Report, ten years from now it will be clear even THAT was hopelessly biased in favor of the current administration. The emergence now of the Tora Bora video showing UBL/OBL escaping is a case in point. The 9/11 Commission was independent, but they were relying on information released to them by three branches of government controlled by one party, and an Executive operating largely according to a principle of omerta.
As a result, this documentary is the equivalent not just of a Fox News version of events, but a Rush Limbaugh embellishment of a Fox News take on the 9/11 events.

Why on earth does anyone regard the VP as a person whose opinions or statements have even one iota of credibility? The man has lied, and lied repeatedly, to the American people, and as far as I could tell from the MTP interview, sees no reason to stop now. I am not a person who ordinarily wishes bad things on people, but in a fit of extreme frustration and anger, I told my husband (the Republican) that it would not upset me to see a picture of Dick Cheney clutching his chest. I wish I could be a bigger person than that, but I have my limits; clearly I have had enough - more than enough - more that I, or anyone else, should have had to countenance or deal with.
Tom Kean’s performance on This Week called into question every decision, every statement and every opinion he made or uttered as part of the 9/11 Commmission. Where is Lee Hamilton, and why have we not heard from him?
I have not had time this morning to read the full WaPo article, but I can see from the front page of the paper (yes, I read it in hard copy, newsprint and all) that I have a lot of reading to do. I did, however start the article you referenced, Christy, snd I’ve decided I probably have to wait until later in the day, because I do not have the stomach for it without having a glass of wine first, and I can’t do that this early in the day.
But, that being said, how dare they? How dare they let this thing slide until elections are getting close? How dare they make speeches and go on talk shows and tout their accomplishments in fighting the Global War on Terror? How dare they keep talking about how Democrats are so weak on terror while they take their attention and assets away from the hunt for bin Laden?
I don’t have time this morning to completely go off the deep end on this, which is probably a good thing. My daugher and I are going to a Wedding Expo, which will give me an opportunity to focus on a wonderful thing that is happening in our family. Much better for the blood pressure, and for removing the scowl from my face.

Under the present regime (not incidentally installed under very suspicious circumstances in 2000) most of the media, like Fox, and ABC, etc. have basically been nationalized. Unions are virtually impotent (right to work). Corporate (big oil and the like) tows the Rove line. So does the MSM. The military does the dirty work in the Middle East, Afghanistan and elsewhere. Congress, the Supreme Court and Federal courts pretty much grovel and hew to the Republicans. Miranda is a dinosaur and has been rendered. Unless one is wealthy, you cannot get the best or for that matter even adequate legal representation available. Lobbyists and PAC’s lubricate the sleazy and corrupt government-big business machinery. What’s left? To consider ourselves ruled by fascism.
We may never know where the Bush gang’s bodies are buried. Kind of like Hoffa.
If ABC ever started telling the truth, they’d go out of business. And probably the CEO and many others would go to jail. What we have is a subversion of the First Amendment. Freedom of the press does not mean freedom to lie.
The scent of prevarication, oppression and repression is absolutely suffocating. We’re being had.
I saw an interesting bumper sticker the other day:
W.A.R. Want Another Republican??
The owner of the SUV is apparently a nearly diehard Democrat, by all the pro-Democrat stickers on the bumper/windows. The license plate was ‘URLGIRL’.
This morning’s news was interesting. The local news ran a disclaimer after stating the ‘controversial mini-series ‘Path to 9/11′ will air tonight do not reflect the opinions, or believes, of ABCNews, or TV9 News’. Also on GMA Weekend, the hosts also stated that the mini-series is a product of ABCNews Entertainment division, *not* ABCNews division. There was a subtle emphasis on the word ‘not’.

Cheney Ignores Senate Intel Report, Cites Zarqawi As Evidence of Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection
All the lawsuits, and threats of lawsuits, would not have stopped this showing. Because they do not care about what happens in courts LONG after the Nov. elections. This is about getting their base riled up and on board. This base will vote for Bush solely because they can blame clinton.
They are giving the base redmeat and will deal with consequences afterwards. Uh, does anyone here believe that there will be consequences, other than a blog uprising I mean. Will Clinton come out swinging? Doubt it. Will Albright come out swinging — I mean in tough take no ***language not those soft political tones she normally talks in. I doubt it.
Because the public is watching — if there is no follow through on this, they will assume it is the normal dems wimping out. Get all in an outrage and then when told to sit down, they do. No, I doubt after this movie showing, the political leaders will keep going at it.

Well the disinformation continues. While having breakfast this AM, the Couier-Post (Gannet), a local fish wrapper and bird cage liner was sitting on the counter. I picked it up and in the Television section there is an article by Jacqueline Cutler @Zap2it with the title “The Path to 9/11″ Explains the How and Why of the Attacks.
Obviously this is syndicated.
The article states that both sides are to blame, yadda, yadda, and is the spin we’ve been hearing all along. It sites sources such such as 9/11 Commission, John Miller’s Book and The Relentless Pursuit. It also states there are compressions and composites, and then this gem “Otherwise, this is accurate, and goverment officals come off as inept. The film’s senior consultant, Thomas H. Kean, chair of the 9/11 Commission and former govenor of New Jersey, helped ensure the accuracy and is paniful aware of the official snafus.“
I went to Zap2it’s Web site and did a search by author and article name, and it’s not there.
However, on their Web site’s front page they have an article Critics Say ABC’s 9/11 Movie Veers Off ‘Path’ which talks about Clinton and the Democrats who object. Without the article that’s in print, there’s really not much you can say about that you can point out to them the bias in their Web site article about mentioning just Democrats are outraged and turning it into a partsian attack on the mini series.
I’m off to let the Couier-Post have it.

Matt Stoller digs out the Truth –
Mickey Mouse’s Karl Rove, Zenia Mucha
So I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on at Disney. I’m still not sure why they are sticking with this right-wing propaganda piece, but it’s becoming a little clearer who has been ordering everyone to lie about it. Zenia Mucha is the EVP of Corporate Communications for Disney Corporation, in charge of all media relations, financial communications, employee communications, and corporate positioning. She is clearly a big part of how Disney handles sticky corporate situations, including the fights with Miramax over Fahrenheit 911, where she sparred with the Democratic Weinstein’s for six months in the press. …
Mucha was Eisner’s protege, not Iger’s. She came into Disney’s empire in 2001, recruited out of New York politics, where she had enormous power as advisor to a very detached Governor Pataki, who nicknamed her the ‘the Director of Revenge’. Before that, she was Communications Director for a very nasty and effective conservative Senator, Al D’Amato.
Eisner was a terrible CEO of the Magic kingdom, and he left behind a real mess. Wow.
Is the hoopla around ABC/Disney a Rovain trap?
Are we all reverting to “Where’s Osama?” and trail going “stone cold” just in time for GWB to announce that we’ve nabbed OBL tomorrow night?
That would be a nightmare scenario, IMHO.
Maybe what we need to do re this lie of a movie, is get some actors together and a video crew and shoot the “bush letting Osama go” scene and put in on YouTube. I bet there would be a huge number of downloads. We could flood every single media outlet with it, accompanied by a link to the specific facts of the report just released.
In the (paraphrased) last words of Joe Hill, “Don’t mourne, organize!”
Is it about time to actually have an organized boycott of ABC/Disney?
Any thoughts on how we put that together, in a way that they and their advertisers would recognize and fear?
Watching Cheney is, if anything, worse than watching Bush. Cheney doesn’t believe his lies. He knows he’s lying, and he wants his lies to be thought of as the truth. “I haven’t read the report.” Ha! His arrogance and contempt ooze out of every pore of his body.
I’m more convinced than ever that BushCo not only has manipulated al-Qaeda, but has actively provided them shelter and cooperated with them to ensure partisan political advantage.
Cheney sez, “inspectors were kicked out of Iraq”… I thought Bush took them out of there so he could bomb…?!?
When networks do “docudramas” they have standards and practices department that goes over this with fine tooth comb… what happened here? Who was doing the fact checking? Who looked over the script and approved stuff that never happened?
Sounds like a fair question to me. How do we make ABC answer it? Spotlight this article to some reporters?

Hot damn, Grandma J, I like that idea.
