The ABC television network is using the fifth anniversary of 9/11 as an opportunity to rewrite history. On September 10 and 11, ABC/Disney will broadcast "The Path to 9/11", a 6-hour, two-part "docudrama" written and produced by conservative filmmakers who place a lion's share of the blame for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on alleged failures of the Clinton administration.
This is not the first time that Hollywood has used 9/11 as a pretext to air pro-Bush propaganda in the guise of a docudrama. On the second anniversary of the terrorist attack, the Showtime cable network broadcast "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis," written by conservative Republican Lionel Chetwynd. Dubbed "a reelection campaign movie" by Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales, the film starred actor Timothy Bottoms in the role of George W. Bush, depicting him as a leader of Churchillian stature who takes personal charge in the 9/11 aftermath while brushing off worries about his own safety with declarations such as, "If some tinhorn terrorist wants me, tell him to come on over and get me. I'll be home!" In reality, as opposed to the bizarro world of docudrama, Bush's safety on 9/11 was guaranteed by hustling him off to an undisclosed location, while Cheney went into hiding for months.
What makes "The Path to 9/11" somewhat different is its claim to be based on the report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9/11 Commission). Thomas Kean, the Republican co-chairman of the 9/11 commission, served as an advisor to the film, although Lee Hamilton, the commission's Democratic co-chair, did not. ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson is claiming that its miniseries is a public service that goes beyond mere entertainment. "Some things you do for commerce and some things because they are the right thing to do," he told Variety magazine.
If the goal were simply to inform the public, however, ABC would have produced an actual documentary rather than a docudrama, which gives the producers license to distort facts whenever and however they wish, while also pretending that their work is somehow a re-enactment of reality.
The show's political slant is evident from the fact that Rush Limbaugh is talking up the movie, noting that its screenwriter, Cyrus Nowrasteh, is a personal friend. Several weeks prior to the broadcast, publicists sent out advance DVDs of the film to conservative bloggers, and screenings have been held for conservative pundits like U.S. News & World Report writer Michael Barone. Even relatively obscure right-wing blogs such as Patterico's Pontifications, written by Los Angeles County attorney Justin Levine, have been favored with advance screenings. Levine reciprocated by declaring that the film is "free of political spin, politically correct whitewashing and partisan wrangling" and "one of the best made-for-televison movies seen in decades. ... The Clinton administration will likely go ballistic over this film." In its politically-spin-free way, Patterico pontificates, the film also "lays out viscerally powerful arguments in favor of the Patriot Act and airport profiling."
When challenged to explain why the right-wing blogosphere is abuzz with praise for the film, director David Cunningham responded that "we are also being accused of being a left wing movie that bashes Bush" — a claim for which there is absolutely no evidence. I searched Technorati for mentions of the film and found 260 references, mostly from conservative websites, every single one of which had nothing but praise for the film. And although I found numerous examples of conservative pundits and bloggers who reported seeing pre-broadcast screenings, no leftist pundits or bloggers had been given a chance to see it (unless you count Salon.com's roundup of several 9/11-themed movies).
As further evidence of the filmmakers' fundamental dishonesty, "Path to 9/11" had its own blog until recently, where screenwriter Nowrasteh attempted to explain away the right-wing blogobuzz about the film by saying, "We can't control who writes what." It's clear, however, that they did carefully control who could see the film prior to broadcast. And in response to criticisms and questions posted in the comments section of their own blog, they airbrushed it out of existence Sunday afternoon, which is why my links above to the apologetics by Cunningham and Nowrasteh no longer work, although the Google cache to the original blog still exists.
The Honest Truthiness
So what is it that conservatives love so much about this film? According to Barone, one "gripping scene" shows "CIA agents surrounding bin Laden's encampments and then being called back when National Security Adviser Sandy Berger refuses to give a go-ahead for the operation." Conservative filmmaker Govindini Murty was also impressed by the same scene, writing a glowing review that was published both on her own blog and on Human Events, the "national conservative weekly." She writes:
One astonishing sequence in "The Path to 9/11" shows the CIA and the Northern Alliance surrounding Bin Laden’s house in Afghanistan. They’re on the verge of capturing Bin Laden, but they need final approval from the Clinton administration in order to go ahead. They phone Clinton, but he and his senior staff refuse to give authorization for the capture of Bin Laden, for fear of political fall-out if the mission should go wrong and civilians are harmed. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger in essence tells the team in Afghanistan that if they want to capture Bin Laden, they’ll have to go ahead and do it on their own without any official authorization. ... The episode is a perfect example of Clinton-era irresponsibility and incompetence.
The only problem with this "perfect example", which Murty praises because it "honestly depicts how the Clinton administration repeatedly bungled the capture of Osama Bin Laden," is that it didn't happen. In reality, it was CIA director George Tenet, not Berger, who called off the operation — which never got anywhere near "surrounding Bin Laden's house in Afghanistan." According to the 9/11 commision report on which the movie is supposedly based,
Tenet told us that given the recommendation of his chief operations officers, he alone had decided to "turn off" the operation. He had simply informed Berger, who had not pushed back. Berger's recollection was similar. He said the plan was never presented to the White House for a decision.
The CIA's senior management clearly did not think the plan would work. Tenet's deputy director of operations wrote to Berger a few weeks later that the CIA assessed the tribals' ability to capture Bin Ladin and deliver him to U.S. officials as low.
In an interview with the far-right Front Page Magazine, "Path to 9/11" screenwriter Nowrasteh said that the 9/11 report "details the Clinton's administration's response -- or lack of response -- to Al Qaeda and how this emboldened Bin Laden to keep attacking American interests. The worst example is the response to the October, 2000 attack on the U.S.S. COLE in Yemen where 17 American sailors were killed. There simply was no response. Nothing."
Again, the actual commission report described thing differently:
As evidence of al Qaeda's responsibility for the Cole attack came in during November 2000, National Security Advisor Samuel Berger asked the Pentagon to develop a plan for a sustained air campaign against the Taliban. Clarke developed a paper laying out a formal, specific ultimatum. But Clarke's plan apparently did not advance to formal consideration by the Small Group of principals. We have found no indication that the idea was briefed to the new administration or that Clarke passed his paper to them, although the same team of career officials spanned both administrations.
The commission's executive summary explains that by the time Al Qaeda was definitely identified as the party responsible for attacking the Cole, Clinton had left office, and it was Bush who declined to take action:
After the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole, evidence accumulated that it had been launched by al Qaeda operatives, but without confirmation that Bin Ladin had given the order. The Taliban had earlier been warned that it would be held responsible for another Bin Ladin attack on the United States. The CIA described its findings as a "preliminary judgment"; President Clinton and his chief advisers told us they were waiting for a conclusion before deciding whether to take military action. The military alternatives remained unappealing to them.
The transition to the new Bush administration in late 2000 and early 2001 took place with the Cole issue still pending. President George W. Bush and his chief advisers accepted that al Qaeda was responsible for the attack on the Cole, but did not like the options available for a response.
Bin Ladin's inference may well have been that attacks, at least at the level of the Cole, were risk free.
There is another political wrinkle to this that should be noted. The attack on the Cole occurred in October 2000, near the end of Clinton's presidency and at the peak of the election campaign between George W. Bush and Al Gore. A military strike under those circumstances, in the absence of clear evidence linking Al Qaeda to the Cole attack, would have been instantly denounced by Republicans as an election-season publicity stunt designed to benefit Gore. And it was the FBI and CIA that failed to provide the clear rationale that Clinton would have needed to justify such action. In Richard Clarke's book, Against All Enemies, he describes the handling of the Cole attack as follows:
The Yemeni government also dragged its feet in the investigation, leading to President Clinton's becoming personally involved. The U.S. government left the Yemenis in no doubt about the two alternative paths that Yemeni-American relations could take.
Meanwhile in Washington neither CIA nor FBI would state the obvious: al Qaeda did it. ... It was difficult to gain support for a retaliatory strike when neither FBI nor CIA would say that al Qaeda did it. ...
Clinton left office with bin Laden alive, but having authorized action to eliminate him and to step up the attacks on al Qaeda. He had defeated al Qaeda when it attempted to take over Bosnia by having its fighters dominate the defense of the breakaway state from Serbian attacks. He had seen earlier than anyone that terrorism would be the major new threat facing America, and therefore had greatly increased funding for counterterrorism and initiated homeland protection programs. He had put an end to Iraqi and Iranian terrorism against the United States by quickly acting against the intelligence services of each nation.
Because of the intensity of the political opposition that Clinton encountered, he had been heavily criticized for bombing al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, for engaging in "Wag the Dog" tactics to divert attention from a scandal about his personal life. For similar reasons, he could not fire the recalcitrant FBI director who had failed to fix the Bureau or to uncover terrorists in the United States. ...
When Clinton left office many people, including the incoming Bush administration, thought that he and his administration were overly obsessed with al Qaeda. ... Why was Clinton so worked up about al Qaeda and why did he talk to President-elect Bush about it and have Sandy Berger raise it with his successor as National Security Advisor, Condi Rice? In January 2001, the new administration really thought Clinton's recommendation that eliminating al Qaeda be one of their highest priorities, well, rather odd, like so many of the Clinton administration's actions, from their perspective.
William Rivers Pitt has written a detailed account of the initiatives initiated under Clinton to deal with Al Qaeda and the threat of terrorism. PBS has produced a documentary (not a docudrama) that offers fascinating insights into the life and career of John O'Neill, the counterterrorism expert who presciently warned about Al Qaeda prior to 9/11 and who is portrayed in "The Path to 9/11" by actor Harvey Keitel. The New Yorker has also written a nuanced, detailed profile of O'Neill that avoids political spin.
If people want to understand the failures that led to 9/11, they should turn to these and other examples of actual journalism rather than the mix of fact, fantasy and deliberate distortion that ABC/Disney plans to broadcast on the fifth anniversary of America's deadliest terrorist attack.

Now, if this is put on by ABC as a true representation of fact, it should indeed warrant complaints to the FCC.
Remember back in 2003 when the incessant whining from the right-wing Reagan worshippers got CBS to pull its Reagan movie becase it basically didn’t fellate St. Ron enough?
We need to do the same and more. Now.
This sounds like the most blatant and evil piece of pure political propaganda since Die Ewige Jude. Its outright falsehood won’t matter once its BS is embedded in the minds of the ignorant public who won’t bother to actually look for what the 9/11 report actually says.
Stop worrying. Nobody’s going to watch this turkey. The only people left in America who still view 9/11 through a rosy gaze of sentimentality are all in the 30% or so who still think Bush is a Christian. We’re not going to reach them anyway, and nobody else will watch the damned thing.
This is because there are three big football games on when ABC is running the faux-cumentary. The overwhelming majority of people who will watch TV next Sun and Mon nights will be watching football rather than this piece of crap.
Six hours? Americans can’t sit still for six minutes. Besides, it’s written by wingers, so you know it will be awful, turgid and trite. Anyone who does start watching and who still might be persuaded that Bush is not a bloody idiot will fall asleep or change the channel long before it blames Clinton or shows Bush as tough.
I just read an article that said that stations are pulling the piece because of profanity, from the firemen at the scene at the World Trade Center, and the stations are afraid of Janice Jackson style fines. That would be the coolest way to stop it. No way to blame it on the Left. Just another case of the conservatives self-destructing.
This morning, cnn.com’s poll Q is;
“How has the US changed since 9/11?” Better or Worse.
Results so far aren’t even close.
Sheldon, thanks so much for a great post.
Any ideas on where the pressure points might be to try and get ABC to “pull” this?
Or do you think trying to get it “pulled,” might actually increase viewership?
Aside from the content, have you heard anything about the technical quality? DW Griffiths BIRTH OF A NATION did terrific damage, because outside of its white supremacist content, his technical expertise made it a must see movie of its time.

myshkin — you’re an idiot! It’s the replays of a CBS 9/11 pgm that have the profanity problem. We’re talking about the ABC new winger-show …
Thank you for this post! It will be good ammo for complaints to advertisers. Any chance we could get the list before the broadcast? How else can we make ABC pay for this?
Bill Clinton can lead the effort to respond to the charge against his administration. The rest of us should find a way to make sure that two facts are brought back to the public discussion: despite the PDB of Aug 6 and numerous other red flags, 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch, and then later, when bin Laden was surrounded in Tora Bora, Bush outsourced the ground effort and bin Laden escaped. And, of course, bin Laden remains at large to this day.
I am so tired of being told to be afraid, and that I brought it upon myself by voting for intelligent leaders. Truth is, there are more reasons to be afraid now than there were last year and the year before, and if we attack Iran, all bets are off.

I certainly hope you’re right. On Sunday night it’s up against “the brothers,” Eli and Peyton, Giants vs the Colts, on NBC with John Madden and Al Michaels.
incredible how little shame the media has promoting propaganda to keep their party in office
the docudrama is going to say Clinton was responsible for the separation of information between agencies
a ridiculous claim, already exposed
it will also actually blame Clinton for missing “three oportunities” to get bin laden
too bad there is an official testimony, by Tennet, who the president commended for his testimony at the commission’s hearing
Tennnet, under oath disproves the notion, and THAT is under oath
further, there is no “separation of information” excuse for this president
CLINTON had weekly briefings from an anti terror league known as the “principles meetings” which kept him informed of all developments, this president attended not one of those even thought he was informed in no uncertain terms bin laden would be his biggest problem
further, this president was hand delivered specific intel, documented, giving him precise information so urgent, Tennet would testify the president was informed “everyone’s hair was on fire”
the president stood down with that information, even though there was a template for successful procedure;
on page 128 of the report, you will find president Clinton was given an almost identical presidential daily briefing as the one bush received
president Clinton went into action, put this country and all her resources on high alert and the event was prevented, all recorded, under oath, on page 128
further
we can trace bin laden through 5 presidencies
the first president we associate is Reagan, who actually put bin laden in power, thinking terrorism was the method to address the USSR.
the next president would be bush senior, who we know allowed bin laden’s power to develop towards America
then there would be Clinton, he was the ONLY president to address the threat, the ONLY president that took action against bin laden, he actually invented the industry
then we have this president,m who we know did less then the previous president, though informed of the threat, and stood down when given intel that was SO precise, it would tell him when the even would occur, (within months), where it would happen, (new york and Washington), what the targets would be, (financial and political structures), what the weapons would be, (commercial airliners) and the method (high jack)
it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to have that kind of precise intel, this president had that precise intel and stood down
this is what we need to prepare the democrats with when this fantasy is broadcast
we need to EMBARRASS the republican party for THINKING they can rewrite history
ABC’s plugging this bigtime. The advertisers need to be identified and targeted, and Tom Kean needs to be hounded on each bogus point of fact he supposedly blessed until he either implodes or rescinds his affiliation with the project.
*ilson, have a cup of coffee. That looked to me like an honest mistake.
I’d like to see this made into a movie.
‘How Osama bin Laden got away‘ - Christian Science Monitor 3/4/02
Bush killed the host (Taliban) but the parasite (Bin Laden) still lives. Five years later we have more parasites and more hosts for terrorism than ever. Heckuva job, Bushie.
I hope the ratings tank on this, hard.I agree,in a lot of American households football is going to rule both evening’s TV choices. This may be the first time in my life I actually welcome football season, lol.
It’s so shameful, the lengths the right wing will go to,nothing is too low or wrong if it smears good people and makes losers into heroes.
Lobster @ 15
I was joking on the screenname ‘Prince Myshkin” who is the principal character of Dostoyevsky’s story “The Idiot”. Yes, myshkin erred here …
I doubt that this movie will have much effect on the popularity of Bush or of his policies; as someone already said, most people have made up their minds and moved on.
However, if it’s the blatant, black-and-white propaganda it sounds like, some fence sitters might actually concede that the media ain’t so liberal after all.
The other thing to watch is the actors playing Bill and Hillary. Do they throw in little tics that subliminally add up to “do not vote for this woman?”
—
5 minutes later –
One more thing. To the extent that the movie is a success, what will it do to the strategies of all the GOP candidates who have committed to running away from Bush this season? I once knew a guy who liked to toast festive occasions with, “Confusion to the enemy.” And how.
*ilson — my bad, and I even enjoyed that book. Somehow I had Myshkin in War and Peace.
And who will be buying ad time for this?
Reading this post following the recent Book Salon, I sense that this program will resonate with the 25%. Still, the push to pull it resonates with me.
One has to laugh at the never-ending attempt by the right to rewrite history for any and all things Bush.
I wish Sandy Berger would sue the people responsible for this film for slander.
Great job Sheldon.
But guess what….It’s even worse than you have so thoroughly listed here. Like all things Republican, It’s all about the Corporations. Scholastic Corporations stock has been in a decided rise this month. You may be asking what that has to do with this phony piece of Propaganda that is going to be competeing with football?
This is why:

That’s right folks. Remember all those Communist/Marxist/Liberal teachers that have been corrupting our children’s minds. First, I must agree that anything you put up against the first Sunday & Monday Night Footballs is clearly a sacrificial lamb. The producers probably thought it was a good idea when it was pitched, then decided they had a dog once they saw it.
Just a reminder for folks (esp ralphbon 14) to keep an eye on Aravosis at Americablog. He’s clearly plotting something for ABC.
This movie is a fraud, an attempt to airbrush history, and the stalling on sharing the prerelease video with people who are not wingnuts shows Disney/ABC is trying to cover up its own 9/11 GOP coverup.
Disney wants its patent rights and needs to know we can really, really bring pain to that agenda.
They know exactly
who they a fluffingwhat they are doing. The GOP wants us to forget that 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch and make the country blame Democrats for the coming decades. Not gonna happen. We need to be the country’s truth squads. They own 9/11, lock stock and rubble. It’s their failure, and all the failure they led us into that followed is their grand strategy. We’ve had enough.Love the picture, by the way. Could have been a Shakespeare for all he knew!

OH SHIT, time to call up the school board again.
Good morning. I. See. The. Sun. Yeaaaaa. Two days of steady rain, not drizzle, but steady down pour has brought my gills into play.
About the movie, I am always looking for alternatives to football but this movie won’t be by choice. Turner Classic Movies is having a special day of ’short films’ and I hope to catch that.
Will they cover the fact that Bush never really wanted bin laden?
WASHINGTON — President Bush sternly rejected a Taliban offer to discuss handing over Osama bin Laden to a third country as U.S. jets began a second week of bombing. “They must have not heard. There’s no negotiations,” the president said Sunday.
Irishamerican via OS - YIKES. They are going to try to show this fool film in schools? Going to call my daughter and tell her to call her school ASAP. This movies needs to be outed for his lies soon. And this rundown here in the post is a good start.
Can’t stop laughing. Has anyone noticed that the book in the photo is upside-down?

…or what about “Bin Laden determined to attack inside the United States”
I believe the target schools for this propaganda are winger-schools such as “Christian Academies”, some charter schools and many home-schoolers. I doubt if real teachers will mess with this stuff …
Methinks the only way to stop this piece of Republican shite from airing is by using legal means. Don’t know what they would be, but if it could be delayed in airing past 9/11 I think Disney would drop it altogether.
Irishamerican @ 24 - good find. that is disgusting! I sent Jack Cafferty your link and the link to Sheldon Rampton’s amazing FDL article. Cafferty was the first person that came to my caffeine deprived mind, i can see him ranting about it. Now to dive into Spotlight.

What is really disgusting is how all of the ReThuglian talking points are disguised as “Debate”….The whole strawman/false choice crap like:
1.The 9/11 Commission Report affords us hindsight.
Knowing what we know now, do you think the
attacks on 9/11 could have been prevented? Back up
your argument with examples from the miniseries or
The 9/11 Commission Report…….yep, that’s right the 911 comission and THIS MOVIE are the only two choices for the “Facts”.
or, my personal favorite…..
2. Does the media help or hinder our national security?…………
Yep, there it is again. That old enemy of democracy, the press. Not to mention the fact that we need to make “responsible choices” between “Security” and “Civil Rights” (read civil rights to mean Communism as practiced by the evil ACLU).
I’ll tell you what folks. If you really think these people are just going to accept defeat in November and go away, then you also believe that the Unions are going to get there power back for the people without the same violent uprisings that it took to create the Unions in this country in the first place in the 30’s.
ConquerIgnorance @ 34
It is funny, but its bullshit.

According to the right-wing reviewers who have seen “The Path to 9/11,” its production values are high-quality. ABC spent $40 million on it.
As for getting ABC to pull it, I doubt that will happen given the amount of money they’ve spent already on pre-broadcast advertising. The best thing people can do right now is get the word out about the deliberate right-wing distortions of fact, which is why I spent some effort to actually compare the film’s claims with the 9-11 commission report — something that I see me to me has also done. It’s certainly worth complaining to the network and holding their feet to the fire.
Another thing people could do would be to create their own “lesson plans” like the Scholastic aids that Irishamerican linked to. ABC says they want people to use the film as a “teaching opportunity.” OK, let’s teach!

I agree with almost everything in your post, save one.
There was an information wall. And I almost understand why there was. Within the Clinton Administration there were career people like Richard Clark, and people living in the targets, like Mary Jo White who were puashing, really pushing hard to do lots of things to contain Al Quaeda and eleiminate Bin Ladan.
Some folks at main Justice took the position that there should be some pushback, some sort of modulating brake so that the Gov’t wouldn’t run amouk in an excess of fear and good intentions.
The idea was, that really seriuos problems and really good ideas for fighting terrorism would be so everwhelming that they would naturally overcome the imposed inertia/friction of the pushback measures. Measures that included the famous Jamie Gorelick “wall” memo.
I understand why people who loved the Constitution would want to stop a rush to do something/anything right away and want to slow the process down to allow people to think through all the consequences and implications for civil rights and the constitution.
However, the pushback crowd did not place enough trust in the experience, judgement, goodwill and love of country of the Kelleys, Fitzgerald’s, Clark’s and White’s of this world.
Even the “bomb boys” moniker hung on them, kind implied that the main Justice thought that this group of lawyers and investigators had a little bit of “chicken little-the sky is falling” syndrome.
I understand why it happened. I beleive main Justice was well intentioned. However, there was most definatley a wall. It was not required by statute or case law. And it causes really big stumbling blocks in investigations.

I am not worried that this show will reverse Bush’s sagging popularity. However, I refuse to allow the Repubs to control this story and continue using the Clinton administration to shunt attention from their own massive failures. It’s time that the Dems pushed back hard. They have abolutely nothing to apologize for.
The idea that it was Clinton’s failures that led to 9/11 is already accepted folklore with the wingers. I want to stop tha notion from spreading.
For example, I was browsing the comments posted on the “Path to 9/11 blog” (which is has now been deleted) and ran into the following statement from a commenter named Robert
This seems to be a popular line of argument from the right, which we should counter with our own mental exercise. Something that goes a little like this…
The failure of the Bush administration is no different, and we need to pound that idea into the mind of the public. One thing you can say about the wingers is that they defend their brand with passion and energy. We need to do the same.

Damn, Damn, Damn.
I wonder of JK Rowling knows that her publisher, the one she singlehandedly save from extinction has just screwed her over?
Good morning…was so glad to see the “Scholastic” news that Irishamerican brought out yesterday surface in this discussion. This film is pathetic and needs to be stopped, for all the reasons you people eloquently as always, point out; but for me ~ reading that Scholastic is pimping this to teachers…to pimp to kids…is simply disgusting and made me incredibly angry. Who owns Scholastic; as many here rightly bring up time and time again - follow the money trail. And don’t underestimate for a minute how important - and obnoxious - it is that Scholastic is jumping on the bandwagon for this propoganda. From years of doing the PTA Prez, volunteer bit with both of my sons, I can tell you that they are a HUGE influence on the public school system in this country.
if the Clinton Administration was so allegedly deficient in combatting terrorism, what bold decisive new steps did the Bush Administration take before 9/11 ? As we sadly know by now, Bush/Cheney was dismantling much of the counter-terrorism measures already in place …

I wish I knew how to alter the PDF “Lesson Plans” that Pravda was so nice to create for our 9 year olds so that I could go through them line by line and either refute the lies and disinformation, or to completely rewrite the “Lesson Plan” myself and send their version, side by side, with the correct version back to them, and to the DNC, Keith, Wolfie, Katie Couric, Lou Dobbs, etc…..
I do think that we need to start writing the Talking Points in general for our Democratic Pundits and “Leaders” because I see them leaving major points on the tables of “News Shows” on a daily basis.

My bad. But thanks to Sheldon, it’s a great post, and Jen Nix is going to be covering this for us this week. Thanks much to all.
I also think that one of us needs to bring this up, so I will!
This is of course many different things they are doing. Not only is it a blatant piece of Propaganda, but this is being put out there not so much to CHANGE minds, but to establish with their base the argument that “The Democrat Party is just impeaching the President to get back at us for Clinton” meme…..
By using the Scholastic endorsement, it establishses a pecident of credibility. I wouldn’t put it past them to have done the Scholastic documents for the ONLY reason of establishing a “Bible” like credibility. Then when it ISN’T used in class rooms, it can be said that it is because of the Librul Activist Hippy public schools.

IrishAmerican, Sheldon, thanks very much for the responses.
I sent an email to Scholastic Books at:
http://scholastic.custhelp.com.....er/ask.php
Here’s the text of the email:
Dear sir or madam,
I read this morning that your company is producing a teaching aid for use with the new ABC movie on the 9/11 attacks. It certainly is important that school children, and others, understand the basis for and outcomes of those horrible events.
Since it’s now been shown that the movie has some basic factual errors, will your teaching aids include a list of corrections so that teachers can share accurate information with their classes?
Sincerely,
cbl @ 50

Thanks for the link explaining the photo manipulation. I hope FDL will avoid using doctored photos (unless otherwise noted). I may have to change my username after that one.
Unless, someone tells me differently, I’m going to Spotlight everyone at the WaPo who I think might be interested.
For newbies, Spotlight only allows you to send it to ten people at a time.
Nice catch *ilson, my bad, Dean was Sunday.
Articles visited by Amb Wilson on Saturday include Howie’s post and the article about Siun’s elevation………

I am having a problem with spotlight. I picked my 10 targets. Wrote a nice long comment, even coughed up my rea name and contact info (rare, incredibly rare for me) and hit prview.
I keep getting an error box that saye “you have to enter a comment, really”
But I have a comment!
Anyway, it won’t let me send. What do i do? Is this something a moderator can send out for me?
John Casper @ 63
Sheldon.
Do you think the Scholastic Aspect of the story is worthy of an update to the main body of the story so that that information is included in the Spotlight Forwarding of the story? I feel it is another aspect of the story that would stir interest in some people that might otherwise disregard it. What do you think?
John Casper,
I included the Schoolastic Books info in my commnent. Now if I could just get it to “send”
Arrgh. I hate technology, but not as much as it hates me!
lhp: I’ve never encountered that, it its not something we moderators have access to. That’s weird. I would cut-paste-save my comment if I were you by going back with the back button, and try again. There’s also a contact link in there somewhere for the designer. I’m sure he’ll want to hear about your experience.
Lord, yes. My first round of Spotlighting went mainly to some of the panel regulars—second round probably will also.
lhp: Maybe the comment box has a chracter limit and you exceeded it? That could be an error source and you may be getting a generic comment error message.
Pach,
I figured out what I was doing wrong.
There is a line already in the comment box that says “add your comment here”
I hadn’t deleted that. When I just delected that placeholder line, I was able to send.
FYI to the rest of you. Learn from my mistakes.
related note: has this been covered in week end threads ?

When using Spotlight, I would also venture to say that targeting out of the way, local or regional media sources may have a disproportionate impact. They don’t get much of this kind of feedback, and it’s easier to get editors to place stories locally. Just a thought. Don’t neglect the second or third teir, expecially in your home media markets.
lhp: I think that’s a good observation. I’m sure the designer would be interested in learning about that, so he may put in some explicit text about the need to delete that line.
Another question about Spotlight. Does it take the readers I just sent to back to here?
At the end of my comment I had a sentence suggesting they take the time to read this comment thread as well. Do they get a link?
I’m curious to know what the product they receive is like?
I agree this is outrageous. As we formulate an effective response, let’s keep in mind that the most important thing is to win elections in November so let’s not get overly distracted.
My first response to outrage is to go over to actblue and contribute to campaigns. Then I come back and think about the issue at hand. I recommend this.
Sorry, is there a scene in this movie of Bush reading the August PDB which warned specifically that Bin Laden was about to attack?
Oh wait, that never happened. He was given the warning, but there’s no evidence that he actually read it. He certainly never did a goddamned thing about it.
lhp: they get an email with your introductory comment and the full text of the main post with a link to the main post that included the comment thread. I would guess, however, that few people will actually follow the link back, unless perhaps you make explicit mention in your introductory note of the value and/or importance of the discussion. Depending on whom you target, they get a lot of email.
By the way, if you give Spotlight your email address, you will be sent a copy of your own message. At least, I usually have, though my confirmation email has not gotten back to me yet, maybe because I used my firedoglake address. The rerouting on that one sometimes involves delays.
Thanks, Messrs Casper and *ilson.
Re the Scholastic bit brought up here, and continuing with Horsewoman’s comment that Scholastic has a huge influence in schools, I agree wholeheartedly that it is this organization PLUS getting the news out that there are lies in the movie.
I first heard about a tilt to the right in my kids schools. The school board was being loaded up with right wing religous folks and every meeting had at least some discussion of prayers in schools, public prayers led by principles and teachers in class, and bringing the ‘correct’ books, including the bible, into the classroom. Back when my kids were small, ooooooh so many years ago, no one really listened.
Well shame on us for believing nobody would go along with their schemes. And it is at the school board level where parents and people like you and me can make a huge difference. I tried running once, from my wheelchair no less, but I was just a name with little money and no mobility. He had pretty shiny flyers touting his ‘family’ and wanting schools to do better.
O.K. I’ll be quiet now but this wave of idiocy has been a long time acoming.
I have to head out now, folks. enjoy Labor Day and don’t shoot anyone in the face.
I recommend a book called “Christian Faith and the Truth about 9/11″ by David Ray Griffin.
