I've written before about how Republicans just aren't funny -- it isn't in their nature. Maybe it is due to the fact that those who swoon at the sight of authority just have no ability to prick the self-importance of the powerful in a way that generates humor, or that their tendency to laugh at the misfortunes of the weak (as in ethnic or sexist jokes) generally aren't funny to anyone over the age of five. But once again, those laugh riots at the Lieberman campaign are proving that they are, at heart, Republicans.
The Kiss Float was funny, delightful, light hearted and acute in its targeting of a particular, telling moment that exploded so many of the self-important myths generated by Joe and his Party of Ego. And in response? We get some LieberClown dressed up as Osama Bin Laden saying "Support Ned Lamont -- We Do."
That's great. Why not just build a campaign around three Poles and a lightbulb, a priest, a rabbi and a minister or "for a nickle I would"?
It's an old GOP card that has been played before, and will no doubt be played again. When this whole dark era of wingnut domination is over, maybe they can just return to bitching about black UN helicopters and fluoridated water. Honestly, their ham-fisted attempts to be funny are just abjectly painful to witness.
Now, I can't say for sure if Lieberman is paying this guy to make this sick and truly despicable joke. But in my experience, a) nearly all the people who show up on behalf of Lieberman not named Lieberman are collecting a paycheck for it, and b) the guy looks suspiciously like the guy who showed up dressed in a banana suit and tried to muscle his way into the frame with Ned Lamont during the "Wake Up WalMart" press conference (where the paid LieberYouth were first instructed to begin harassing Ned, right as Richard Goodstein appeared on the scene). (hat tip LamontBlog)
Because Joe is all about eschewing negative, partisan politics and taking the high road, don't you know. What a truly great man. How tragic that we blog urchins don't recognize that and refuse to kiss his ring.

Ned! Frist!
Pammy Atlas’s vlog is friggin hilarious..wait, it was supposed to be serious. Does that count?
back in the good ole days, they’d dress somebody up like Joe Stalin to endorse pinko Democrats !
The guy doesn’t look like OBL at all.
To me, it looks as if he’s dressed up as the typical “Arab” and that’s supposed to equal “terrorist” if you’re thinking with half your brain.
I’d say the Lieberman campaign is continuing its basic appeal to racism with this one.
I got a broken URL for that banana suit link, just fyi…
and how can you tell that’s osama, and not just some bedraggled guy?
It’s the Repub pundit loudmouths and bullies that aren’t funny. Others are bitingly so. It’s tied in with the very reason they become pundits and bullies - they’re broken, shame-filled, leg-shakingly afraid people. That doesn’t engender funniness, y’know?
and when I first started reading, I thought of Bruno Kirby in Godd Morning, Vietnam: “Sir…in my heart, I know I’m funny.”
that guy is supposed to be Osama bin Laden?!?
prolly be more effective if it were a slighty better costume…
I wanted to let you know there is a follow-up commentary just out regarding Lieberman and the VFF/GOP……..isn’t discovery just fun? Think you will find it interesting……

frankly, I thought the dude was looking like a “hippie” supporting Ned — hippie-fear is fierce amongst elderly Republicans …
I thought the guy in the banana suit was George Allen? Now I’m really confused.
Didn’t look like Osama to me, either.
A disgusting analogy to make, anyway.
I didn’t know ZZ Top supported Lamont. :)
filthy racist xenophobes with no imagination at all and whose only game is endorsing more fear and hate.
macaca, little guatamalan, now arabs.
nice.
Hey, Mr. Linkee Man, linkee me banana!
I didn’t think of Osama–I thought the guy was supposed to be a hippie. Those wacky republicans!
I had no idea it was OBL either. Here are my ‘notes’ to the Republicans on their ‘Ned Lamont Supporter’ Joke.
1) Get a better OBL costume; and
2) Don’t use OBL until you capture him cause right now it’s just a reminder that your party failed to do what it set out to do and started a war we can’t get out of with a country that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 9/11 ATTACKS and is now just sucking lives and $$$ by the hour.
Other than that - I love it.
So who wants to commission a Summer’s Eve Box that says “Support Lieberman, we do!”

Now THAT’S funny.
BTW banana link fixed.
It’s the Malkinization of America.
Twisted Martini– may I suggest the Fartacus scented variety?

This is really sad. I saw the photo and thought “Cool. Ned has the support of Connecticut rastifarians.”
I wish I were kidding. Will try to get out more.
Blog urchins? is that anything like sea urchins?
At least someone has spines—even multiple ones. That’s us.
Rob Zuber @ 12

Rove’s guys need to get a better costumer provider.
There are going to be all sorts of disgusting, ugly things going down in Connecticut this fall because the GOP sees this as a Republican pick up state (i.e. Liberman). Personally, I think, if anything, it’s going to help Lamont. As a resident of CT on and off for 40 years, I don’t think any CT Dem (or Independent, or moderate Republican) is going to appreciate having swiftboaters and Rove henchmen in CT throwing mud and filth.
Perhaps the $60 a day included the money for props and costumes.
besides, have you ever seen a plump or sunglass sporting Osama on teevee?
me neither.
Florida Mom @ 20 should have a spew warning!
When dirty tricks go bad…
actually, it’s an Allen Ginsburg look-alike
Wingnuts aren’t funny. And we need to hold them accountable. ThinkProgress has a good article on that tool Stephen Hayes being picked to write Cheney’s autobiography. Rush Limbaugh, The National Review, Drudge, Instapundit, and their enablers on cable TV need to be held accountable for this mess.
We need a data mining project, so every time any one of these idiots speaks, their stupid and hilariously wrong past statements get thrown back at them.
it’s probably not the same banana that is showing up with a monkey at Sen. Allen’s events.

Also good news- Brown up 9 in Ohio
Bad news:

Lieberman up ten in his race.

Interesting. Just got off the phone with my business partner in New York and asked him what he thought about Lieberman…
He said. “You know, I don’t even know anything about Lamont but I can’t stand Lieberman. It’s not even about the war in Iraq. It’s because he’s whiner!!! And I’m Jewish!” LOL
My business partner isn’t as politically savvy or as informed as I am but I thought his whiner observation was interesting and wonder how prevalent that is to the casual observer (and voter).
I thought that guy was a musician I know (he’s Jewish with dreadlocks) and did a double-take. “Hey, what’s MJ doing in Connecticut?” :)
I Emailed Cilizza a link to the previous post and got back an Email from his Blackberry saying he cant open it so I cutted and pasted the entire Jane-post and just Emailed it to him …
God, it looks like Jamie Farr in Cannonball Run.
Nice pre-printed sign he’s sporting there. Very grassroots.

Well, for starters, the Rovians were using the “OBL supports” crap back in 2004. I was with Emily’s List in West Palm Beach on election day and “OBL endorses Kerry” signs were up everywhere.
Sad
This Osama guy should be invited on the Colbert report! Wouldn’t that be entertaining.
Bad costume choice.
At first glance I thought an Amish Union had endorsed Ned.
Then I wondered why Captain Ahab was supporting him.

Re Brown up in Ohio over DeWine,
Guess a lot of people like me are begging their Ohio relatives to TAKE ACTION.

cozumel,
“My business partner isn’t as politically savvy or as informed as I am but I thought his whiner observation was interesting and wonder how prevalent that is to the casual observer (and voter).” it is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer!

I saw one of those infuriating “nine out of 10 terrorists prefer Kerry” bumper stickers on a car at my daughter’s dance studio. I had a suspicion who it was, but wasn’t sure.
I put a post-it on their windshield, saying “If I were you, I wouldn’t put LIES on my bumper.”
The bumper sticker was gone next time I saw the car…was I going over the line? Maybe. But what I wrote was true, every word of it.
Oh, and jane–these vile things aren’t meant to be funny. They are meant to be “plausibly deniable”, as in when you rightfully point out how hateful and disgusting they are, the Rethugs will say, “you humorless liberals never could take a joke.”
Just another reason to wish these disgusting people the most humiliating defeat that could ever happen.
“but I thought his whiner observation was interesting and wonder how prevalent that is to the casual observer (and voter).”
Coz, that’s the very first thing most non-political people notice about him, and cringe about. It’s unfortunate, for the most part, that people form opinions based on stuff like that, but in this case it is indicative of his larger problem - he’s a wanking whiner!
I was shocked to hear Heidi Klum’s voice the other day. She sounds like she’s on helium but it doesn’t take away from her smarts or beauty.
No No Zorko! The guy in the Osama suit did it.

Actually, Zogby interactive is not a typical online poll. Zogby has been fine tuning it’s methodology for years and it’s results are now on a par with the Zogby telephone survey- it’s reliable and should be taken seriously. It uses stratified sample technology.
I had to study the picture for awhile - I knew it was supposed to be an insult, but I wasn’t sure how… Pajamahadeen, perhaps?

I’ve never seen OBL with shades, but I understand he has a beautiful bong he carries around with him.
This month’s Atlantic (or is it Harpers?) has a piece by a woman who apparently captured his attention. During their first “date”, he took several hits off his bong; she declined. I dunno,
I’m getting such a different picture of him from non-official readings. He seems like a spoiled rich kid, just like Georgie and about as serious in his religion as Georgie is. Does George go to church? I didn’t think so.

I’ll defer to your knowledge which I know you have a great deal of, but the last time I read about it, the interactive was still being refined and had a ways to go before it tracked with other polls.
If so, we’ve got work to do.
egregious @45,
A lot of Ohio folks I talk to are saying they want them ALL out. They’re sick of incumbents, period.
My pizza man was wondering about Blackwell vs. Strickland. I told him I thought BLackwell would have made a dandy Pharisee and why. We’ll see if his megachurch teaching cancels out my one little voice.

In unrelated not-funniness, the identity of the “secret hold” Senator is still unknown, but 58 Senators have been eliminated thus far as the possible culprit. Check the latest tally to see if your Senator still needs to be asked the question.

Your daily gas and oil prices

Average national price: $2.848, down $.043 from 8/25/06

Highest average price: Hawaii $3.349
Lowest average price: Ohio $2.614

Dated Brent Spot $69.95, down $1.79
WTI Cushing Spot $70.61, down $1.52
Gas continues to fall. This is good news for Republicans as it decreases pump rage. Ernesto turned toward Florida and away from the energy intensive Louisiana-Texas coast. As a result, oil prices which were set to jump either way on Friday fell and are again testing the $70 level.

I receive Zogby interactive surveys frequently. I rarely have the time to take them. Clearly it’s self selecting - on top of being only available to people with Internet access.
Secondly - living in CT - I would be shocked if a week after the primary, Lieberman didn’t have higher name recognition than Lamont among Indeps and Repubs.
If I were an 18 year incumbent - I would want much more than a 10 points margin. It seems to me he had a much larger margin in the primary and it melted away pretty quickly.
And just curious - he’s “up” 10 points compared to what? Did Zogby recently do an interactive survey of all likely voters in CT to compare these results to? Just curious.
I’d also like to see a breakdown of the votes - do you have that info? I would be surprised if Lieberman’s support doesn’t skew Republican.

In the “Payback: What a Concept!” and “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry ‘n’ Chuck” departments (via Atrios): the DSCC page has zapped Joe out of existence, and shows Lamont as the “incumbent” in Connecticut instead.
Kos says Liddy Dole has drafted Republican workers all across the eastern US to campaign for Chaffey. Minus the editorial and punditocracy noise, maybe the incumbency protection racket seems to be truly bipartisan.
I also hear it’s an open primary. This is where maple sappy New England Dems separate from wild eyed Texas Republicans (it’s all that hot sauce burning our sphincters that makes us so ornery - and I’ll bet Jane finds red hot chili pepper seeds on her TP quite often too). In Texas the Republicans regularly vote in Democratic primaries to make sure the weakest Dem candidate goes to the general election.
Where is the Dem GOTV effort for Mr Laffey?
Is anyone on here from RI? What gives? Please don’t claim to be above that sort of thing. It’s legal, so it’s dumb not to. And with the R’s running smears against Laffey, wouldn’t it be delish to see them turn 180 degrees?

Rep. Harris: Church-state separation ‘a lie’
POSTED: 5:37 p.m. EDT, August 28, 2006
MIAMI, Florida (AP) — U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is “a lie” and God and the nation’s founding fathers did not intend the country be “a nation of secular laws.”
…..
“If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin,” Harris said.
But they can be downright amusing…
Hmmm…that’s supposed to be OBL??? He looks more like Joseph or some other biblical character.

angie #79,
I might agree except these guys are so incompetent they couldn’t manipulate themselves out of a wet paper bag. In fact, it usually works the other way.
Bush saber rattles with Iran. Prices shoot up and axis of evil Iran’s treasury gets richer and Americans end up paying more for gas and being pissed off about it.
Bush lets Israel rampage in Lebanon for a month. Fears of a wider war increase and push up oil prices. We lose credibility along with the Israelis while Iran’s revenues go up allowing them more easily to finance reconstruction in Lebanon.
