Hi, Stephen. It's been ages since we've spoken. Okay, we've never spoken, but I feel I know you. I feel it, so it must be true.
See, I'm a partisan, like you. It's true, I'm one of those you say hates America, but what I really hate is sucking bouillon cubes. I want my in-flight liquids back. But I digress. I have a matter of bipartisan urgency to bring to your attention today, so I'm reaching around the aisle. I'm offering you a reach-around. No need to thank me.
Alan Schlesinger needs you.
Now, I know you know who he is: he's the conservative competing with Joe Lieberman for the conservative vote in Connecticut. The general election in Connecticut has turned into a GOP primary, part deux, and Alan Schlesinger has a right to be heard by conservative voters. After all, he's put in his time for the party, and it's not fair for Lieberman to just waltz in and assume he can have all those GOP votes. The people - the comfortable, well capitalized captains of industry in Connecticut - deserve to be heard, no matter what Ken Mehlman says. I'm sure you agree.
Get Alan Schlesinger on your show. Let him make his case. Take a look at how he handled himself with Matthews: he's just great on TV.
It's true, Lieberman is to the right of Schlesinger on Iraq, but Schlesinger has made more aggressive statements about Iran and immigration than Lieberman has. The base Republican voters in Connecticut should have a choice. You can even invite Lieberman to debate his de-facto GOP primary opponent (part deux) on your show. You still have that chair out for him, don't you?
Stephen Colbert, America needs you. Your party needs you. As a partisan, it offends me any time I see the DC aristocrats telling base voters what to do, and I'm offended on behalf of all the crabgrassroots Republicans all over the country. If they can bigfoot the crabgrassroots plutocrats in Connecticut, who's to say they can't do the same to the morally upright movement conservatives in Colorado Springs? I'm sure you see the danger.
Oh, and thanks for sticking up for Geraldo. That former boss of yours, Stewart, is just beyond the pale. Call me any time you need another, er, helping hand from me.
In Liberty,
Pach
PS: Stephen, if you bring Alan on, please mention me on air ("Pah-cha-KOO-tehk"). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! You have so many fans around here, you see. . . (this is what we call a shameless bleg).

Truthiness!
Brilliant!
In-flight liquids!
I hope he takes the bait, Pach. The Young Turks had Schlesinger on recently, and he was still trying to put a brave face on the nonsupport from the Repubs.
OT Big Dog and Rahm are on Charlie Rose tonight. You can send questions into the show http://www.charlierose.com/feedback.shtm.
I sent in one about why Rahm and Schumer aren’t doing unto Lieberman what they did to Hackett.
Pach,
I hope you’ve received your (snail) mail.
well I’m headed to Atlantic City tomorrow morning so I’ll keep my eyes peeled, since I’m sure he doesn’t gamble at Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun anymore.
If he’s at the Borgata, I’ll track him down. If not, well that’s not so bad either. :)

I have them here on my desk waiting for me to get them in the stereo. Many thanks! I’ll unwrap them now and get to.
I don’t understand this “card counting” which is what Schlesinger has allegedly done. Isn’t that a thought crime? Who can prove what’s in somebody’s head?
Well, I’ve obviously never been to a casino and I’m not worrying over the poor guy, but it just seems like a weird accusation…
Just checking in…
Has this been mentioned yet:
“activists in his [Lieberman’s] hometown of New Haven asked the local registrar of voters (Sharon Ferrucci, pictured) Monday afternoon to strip him of his party affiliation because of his third-party reelection bid…”
From New Haven Independent
Amazingly, it seems these activists are on decent legal ground. See the relevant CT statute
Wow! Joe could be stripped of his DEM label — it might not have much practical effect, other than he wouldn’t be allowed to vote in CT Dem. primaires. But, wow, what a PR effect!
If you like Lamont, then you’ve gotta luv Tasini of New York. There is but one thing I would relish as much as Senator Lamont’s victory over Lieberman this autumn. And that would be Senator Tasini’s triumph over Clinton this fall.
This moderation thing is a mystery to me. I’m so squeaky clean and yet here I sit in the penalty chair. heh! :)
Have you sent this email to Colbert’s people? Or to the ColbertNation.com?
:)
Very well done.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 11
I have to admit I don’t know much about Tasini but I already love him. I’d fly all of us to NYC for that victory party.
Colbert has Schlesinger back: http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gm.....unter.html
George Felix “Frenchie” Allen Jr. is only ahead by 3 points in the latest poll. Couldn’t happen to a more pompous racist frat-boy.
Go Webb.
Maybe the Republicans can get a Team Loser Tour going? They can have KT McFarland in NY, this Schlesinger chowderhead and then the Fabulous Katherine Harris can close the show out.

I have not. I don’t have any contacts over there. But I’ll wager he has someone on staff reading the blogs.
Headline news on WTNH TV 6:00 news tonight:
More at the above link to WTNH.
Great quote:
“That’s a way of looking at it, another way is you being a sore loser,” says Adam Mocciolo, Waterbury.
“Oh no no, in the end the public will decide,” says Lieberman.
Memo to Joe - dismissively saying “no,no, no” is not the best way of interacting with your constituents, you arrogant prick.
Associated Press picks up story, re: activists seek to remove Lieberman’s Democratic registration.
Stamford Advocate
PS - From earlier NHIndependent article:
Ferrucci [registrar of voters] said she wasn’t familiar with the law. In a friendly encounter with the surprise crowd in her office, Ferrucci promised, “I will read it and get back to you” within 48 hours or sooner.
It’s only fair. Colbert has left the chair open for Lieberman past the primary, and Lamont has already been a guest, so the other candidate really deserves a shot.
Pachacutec @ 17
Yeah, I’ll bet you’ll catch his eye, Pach. :)
I think it’s a divisive move.
And you should know, Senator.
aReader @ 20
You know the real pisser of the situation is that they’re preparing to change the law that allowed this after primary bid as an indy for next year. The only conclusion I can come to upon hearing this is that he found a loophole that nobody ever intended to have used in this manner.
Sleazy Lieby.
aReader @ 21
I find it so odd that this challenge wasn’t anticipated. As soon as Lieberman announced he’d split off if he lost the primary it should’ve been researched. I smell a rat.
Bush at today’s press conference was asked about supporting Joe Lieberman, and/or going to CT to campaign. Let’s go to the transcript for the carnage . . .
Stephen Colbert, we need you fast!
You can always write Steven a ‘Thank You’ here: http://thankyoustephencolbert.org/
great idea.
Sharon Ferruci was working in the registrar’s office when I was working pols in New Haven - she was a DeLieto pal and has survived … comes from the old school of New Haven politics (insert images of big machines here)
from the link above….”This kind of ridiculous, partisan game-playing is not going to provide anyone in Connecticut with better jobs, better health care, or better schools,” she said.
How many years did Joe have already? Who has better health care (beside his wife)?
Makes sense, siun (images of big noisy machines whirring around in my head…)
Maybe this has been mentioned before because when I posted a brief snippet in the last thread it got no notice? My wording may not have been clear, so I’ll post this:

Card counting is a mathamatical system of keeping track of the cards that have been played (in your head). Assinging values to them and betting accordingly based on the count. It’s not illegal but if a casino suspects you are doing it (and winning) they can refuse your play for any or no reason ; )
OT–on Iran, there are various reports floating about today. They might be true. But something I learned this past spring–don’t believe for sure anything you read about the Iranian nuclear program until sources are willing to go on the record with their names. There are some very bad actors out there in anonymous-source-land on this topic.
Oh baby, I hope they can kick Joe out of the party! It would be so sweet!
Meanwhile, today’s Froomkin column passes along the tidbit from Ken Hermann that Bush will be at former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie’s home in Alexandria next Wednesday for a fundraiser for George “Some of my best friends are called ‘macaca’” Allen.
Peterr @ 35
Jesus, with that much concentrated stupid all in one place, I hope it’s not contagious.
Pachacutec @ 37
Contagious? No.
Corrosive. Absolutely.
Especially corrosive to the democratic process, the rule of law, and the moral standing of the United States of America in the eyes of the world. And that’s just for starters.
Peterr wanted NASCAR…But then out jumped Captain Liebmazing!
;>)
OT — but I am curious. Has anyone been reading “American Theocracy” by Kevin Phillips?
Amazing peice of work and should be read by anyone who wants to understand how the Southern Evangelicals have managed to consolidate so much political power in this country.
Terre @ 32
Wow, this seems clearly like another violation of election law. The official SecState web page says:
United State Senator:
 Republican - Alan Schlesinger
 Democratic - Joseph Lieberman
 Democratic - Ned Lamont
I guess I’ll need to start cruising the fine http://electionlawblog.org for updates (nothing today so far).
Ask, and ye shall receive!
(I’ve learned to set the coffee cup down BEFORE clicking on a darkblack link!)
That Captain Liebmazing is truly stunning, on so many levels . . .
Prof. Foland,
The Ayatollah Khameini came out and laid it out in black and white today.
-GSD
I’m curious - beyond the important symbolism - are there any practical repurcussions for Joe from being kicked out of the party in New Haven? I assume this is his “home” district, so he wont be able to vote in primaries, etc? Anything else?
Here it is:
Ayatollah to Bush-FU!
*”The Islamic Republic of Iran has made its own decision and in the nuclear case, God willing, with patience and power, will continue its path,” Khamenei was quoted as saying Monday by state television.
*”Arrogant powers and the U.S. are putting their utmost pressure on Iran while knowing Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons,” Khamenei said.

Cozumel @ 34
Actually, not in most jurisdictions. Casinos are licensed to offer games of “skill and chance”, and most licensing boards have ruled that casinos cannot decline to play with someone simply because they evidence skill.
What they can (and do) do, is invite you to play at this very special table over here, where they’ll shuffle the shoe before it has a chance to get hot.
This does not include “team” play, where players communicate information on the state of the shoe to others. That is on much less solid ground, and casino security (especially outside the US) does rough up team counters.

Hey, I live here in Colorado Springs! There’s a Democrat running? Just kidding, there really is this time and he has an admittedly uphill battle to say the least, but he has a fighting chance! Jay Fawcett is a retired Air Force Colonel running for the 5th Congressional seat as a, gasp, Democrat! And he’s had Wesley Clark come out and campaign for him so far. His Republican opponent is bathsh1t crazy; a clone of Focus on the Family’s James Dobson. There are, many, and I kid you not, many Republicans who are going to vote for Jay. You know, in all my blogging, this may be the first post I’ve done Atrios has linked.
You never know the lack you feel deep inside until it gets filled.
That England - supplying Hezbollah, growing their own terrorists, refusing to understand that they need to declare war on the 11 suspects that they have charged instead of treating them like criminals (obviously they did NOT listen to the PResident this morning)!
I think America will have to join arms with Israel on this and invade. Besides, once Britain has been conquered, our King will be able to have some royal jewels, instead of just having to show his family ones to men in black robes.
Pachacutec, hey, it’s been toooo long since you wrote anything over at dKos…
You’re missed.

It would be great if Colbert does indeed start inviting the R from Conn in the same way he did Joe… but in the R’s case, I’d bet he’d come running! And you should get credite Pach!
Funny Mary, thanks! :-)

Seriously, thanks. This is my home now, though, at least until they all get sick of me.
Webb is within a few points of Allen; Rowley is within a few points of Kline; Ned is on his way to wiping the floor with Joe.
Maybe luckydog, who wrote a heartbreaking Katrina diary at Kos today, could send it to the CT press as an op ed piece, asking Sen. Lieberman where he has been, before, during and after Katrina, and why can’t we have a Democrat on the committee who will demand acccountablity?
Not just one that will say, as Lieberman has with the wiretap program, that the President did wrong, but now we all have to get together and pass laws protecting him from the consequences of his decisions.
Steve in CO @55 - good luck to Jay.

You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and darn it all, you deserve it Pach.
The state party rules are beholden to national party rules, national rules rule. Nuther words, the state can’t have a rule that contradicts national. In NM, Democratic Party rules say that one may not run in the primary and be defeated, then run again as a candidate, I don’t think even as a write in, in the general. No two times here. Course the Democratic Party of the great State of NM does not feel it is necessary to follow the rules of the State Democratic Party of NM. Nuther story.
Cool! Pach’s “I feel your pain”, is posted at Huffpo!

There is another Ret. Air Force Lt. Col. running for office against the Republican crook Doolittle in Northern California. His name is Lt. Col. Charlie Brown. And he is a good man, as is Fawcett. All John Doolittle (R-Ca.) doo, is line his pockets.
Card counting is legal, and no more unethical that running a casino with the odds stacked in favor of the house. It’s also legal for casinos to deny entrance to whoever they want. People are acting like it’s a scandal that “Alan Gold” got caught counting cards and was asked to leave.
The Kobe be with you!
timewarp @ 42
I haven’t read “American Theocracy,” but I’ve read his “American Dynasty” in which he more briefly covers the Southern Evangelicals.
He’s a good historical read, but a pretty dry writer. I found it hard to slog through “Dynasty” is some ways although the information he provides is incredible and indepth.
Pachacutec @ 70
it’s more likely Hannity or Dobbs will mention strange Peruvians getting involved in Connecticut politics — do you have a carta verde, Senor Pachacutec?
SharonW @ 19
Ummmmmm
1) Running against the person who won the primary is not divisive?
2) Getting your friends Rove & Cheney to help you out by calling your opponent a terrorist and those who voted for him AQ supporters is not divisive?
3) Repeating verbatim what Cheney, Rove, Coulter, Hannity, etc. say about Lamont and his supporters is not divisive?
4) Accepting the help of Swiftboaters who have come to town to support you is not divisive?
5) Draining money away from the three Democratic Congressional candidates in CT and drawing more Republicans to the polls is not divisive?
The list goes on.
The only person I can think of more stubborn and self-deluded than Lieberman is the Decider himself.
Thanks Mary; he’ll need lots of luck, and cash… I’m going to chip in; but not until it gets close and it looks like he does actaully have a chance will the money really come in (chicken and the egg problem of course).

Good old NY Times. Their editorials on Lamont/Lieberman have been right on target.
This is the kind of thing that will appeal to Independents in Connecticut. These folks are unaffiliated for a reason and they are discerning voters. I really don’t think they are going to vote for the same old same old this November.
Like I said, Lieberman is stubborn and deluded and, unfortunately, he is taking us along for the ride.
Folks here use the word “progressive” a lot. What exactly does the word mean?
