[FDL welcomes Dr. Victoria Wulsin, candidate for OH-2, to our Blue America series. Dr. Wulsin is chatting with everyone in the comments about her campaign, so please stop by and give her a great FDL welcome. Thanks! -- CHS]
Nationally speaking, southwest Ohio's congresswoman Mean Jean Schmidt had her moment in the national spotlight in November of 2005 when her obscurity came to an end as she lurched into a shocking and psychotic rant on the House floor, accusing respected and decorated war hero Jack Murtha of being a traitor and coward.
Embarrassed, the GOP leadership made her take a time-out. In the aftermath she cemented her place into the Republican Extremist Hall of Shame and she wound up forever on our Schmidt List. But in OH-02, it isn't about a "moment in the national spotlight." They've been stuck with this embarrassment full time. Christy begged asked me to look into her opponent in the upcoming election to be certain if the race was something we could get solidly behind.
I knew absolutely nothing about Victoria Wulsin. And now I can tell you she is positively one of my favorite candidates running for Congress from any district.
Her story is breathtaking and her prescriptions for what's ailing America are exemplary but I want to start someplace else entirely. When I've mentioned Doctor Wulsin to other people who know her-- people in the district, Howard Dean, Sherrod Brown-- they beam with enthusiasm. It goes beyond the realm of "good candidate" and into the realm of "terrific person."
After interviewing Vic about how to approach America's looming health care catastrophe -- and being completely wowed by the depth of her knowledge and her passion on the subject -- I threw her a curveball. I asked her if she has a favorite musician. Did she ever! She went from talking about Brahms' Fourth Symphony and Beethoven's Seventh to quoting Bonnie Raitt, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and Bruce Springsteen. And then she sang "The Times They Are A Changin'!" And she actually sang it well.
"Dylan spoke for my generation," she told me. Mine too. I felt a real connection with her beyond agreeing that Jack Murtha had a far better solution to the disaster in Iraq than Mean Jean Schmidt.
"People might get the idea that I'm just an academic -- a doctor and a professor -- but my passions extend beyond helping out in the public realm. I love to play games with my kids and their friends. I love to go camping with my family. I'm a wife and a mom."
And she's a mensch. And how about this? Vic was a housemate of Ned Lamont's at Harvard when they were college students. Her boyfriend was Ned's roommate!
The day after I spoke with her she was having breakfast with Jesse Jackson and after that Howard Dean was coming over to her house for lunch. A day or two earlier she had driven to Adams County with Paul Hackett and some of her volunteers to help an injured iron-worker and his family re-build their storm-damaged home.
Victoria Wulsin is a strong and intelligent woman with a common sense progressive approach. I liked her approach and her completely mainstream, all-American positions on every single issue facing the country. But as a doctor and a very experienced public health expert, her views on health care are more than tangential to her campaign -- and to the reasons why it is important for all of us to do what we can to help elect her.
After doing her undergrad honors thesis on the British Healthcare Service, living in London, she spent many years in East Africa working for the Red Cross and for USAID and as the regional advisor for Aids and child survival in Kenya.
For me, if you want to solve the situation in Iraq, you look for an expert like Jack Murtha or Wes Clark, not to chickenhawks like Bush and Cheney and that catastrophic crew. And if you want to start the process of solving the healthcare crisis in America -- how about people like Dr. Howard Dean and Dr. Victoria Wulsin instead of botton-line-only-motivated-corporations and the pols they buy?
"Helping to rebuild the health infrastructure in Rwanda," she told me, "gives me an experience of getting results working with diverse factions and being able to stay focused on what's best, not only for the people, but for future generations. One of the weaknesses of our government has been the failure to look forward into the future. Are they even contemplating Global Warming? Budget deficits? The consequences of the occupation of Iraq? Bush and his cronies had two goals. One was to topple Saddam Hussein and the other had to do with getting control of the business opportunities in Iraq. His 'vision' is very short-sighted."
A major part of how Vic looks at herself is as a parent.
"I'm not working just for today. I'm thinking about the future of our children. Biologically I have 4 kids; my organization takes care of 8,000 orphans in Africa. I'm running for Congress for America's 55 million children."
Can Vic win? It's a tough district. And we all know what Paul Hackett accomplished there last year. He came close in a special election. He's a friend and neighbor of Vic's and on her advisory committee. And this year is building in a strong Democratic sweep in Ohio, from top to bottom.
Ted Strickland, the Democratic candidate for governor is wiping the floor with Ohio's arch-criminal Secretary of State, Ken Blackwell and our own Blue America Senate candidate, Sherrod Brown has a solid lead over rubber stamp Republicrook Mike DeWine. Yesterday's Washington Post reported that the GOP has already lost Ohio's "security moms," married women with children.
Still OH-02 is a rough district. Bush got 64% of the vote against Kerry. But now Bush's approval rating in the district is down to 41%. That's good news. But there's better: Mean Jean Schmidt's approval rating is 33%. "People here want change," Vic told me. "They're ready for government to be pro-people."
If you're ready for our government to be pro-people too, there are several ways to help Vic Wulsin move it in that direction. The campaign needs volunteers and you can sign up here. And, of course, the campaign needs cash. Mean Jean Schmidt can get all she needs from the Big Corporations who's puppet she has been in DC. Vic needs to depend on those whose interests she will be fighting for: ours. Please consider our Blue America Act Blue Page. And, as a little incentive, the first 25 contributors will get a rare Bob Dylan CD that has never been sold to the general public: LOVESICK, a 9-song promo that Sony did for Victoria's Secret. (If you are not interested in receiving the CD, please add $.01 to your donation.)
[I never do this with one of Howie's posts, but this is one race in which I'd love to see our Democratic candidate kick some serious butt. If you need added incentive to help out the Wulsin campaign, here it is:

Crooks and Liars has the Countdown report on her despicable action from the floor of the House. (And, because it's Saturday, here's the SNL spoof of Mean Jean's idiotic ranting.) It's not the only reason to support Dr. Wulsin by a long shot -- Dr. Wulsin is a fantastic person, a committed progressive, and has worked on the issues that lift up vulnerable children by providing access to healthcare, among other things, for years, and that's just for starters. But getting Mean Jean out of the House just to raise it's fashion quotient with Mr. Blackwell is reason enough for me. (Kidding...mostly.) Please consider volunteering for the Wulsin campaign if you live anywhere in or near the OH-2. Thanks! -- CHS]

Welcome to FDL Dr. Wulsin! Best of luck in your campaign — and I hope you enjoy chatting with all of us here today.
Gang, because Dr. Wulsin was nice enough to take time away from the campaign trail to be with us here today, I’d appreciate it if everyone could stay on topic in this thread. If you have off-topic issues to discuss, please use the prior thread to do so. Thanks!
Howie! Christy! Jane!
Christy’s addendum hit it right on the head– Mean Jean may be the worst creepy crawly thing in the whole Congress. But there’s an even better reason to work hard for Vic Wulsin. She’s someone who will make a really outstanding congressperson. I’ve never said this on one of our chats before, but this is one on which we should all go the extra mile. It’s winable and it will be a TREMENDOUS difference. Wait til you meet her in a few minutes!!
Howie — thanks so much for putting in the extra work on this one. :) Great article, as always, and a great introduction to the next Congresswoman from OH-2. If we can turn this district blue in November, it truly will be a wonderful, wonderful sign of things to come, I think.
I’m almost ready to kick in my 2 cents or so, Howie, but who was it I missed last Saturday? (I was on the road again.)
P.S. I’m an Ohio resident as of the end of 2005, and I think people here are close to a ‘throw all the Republican bums out’ moment. It’s a matter of getting our voters to show up (and be counted, of course).
Dr. Wulsin,
Thanks for coming here, AND PLEASE WIN!
What is the key to providing better health care coverage for all Americans?
iftthethunderdontgetya, on Wednesday our guest was Sherrod Brown and last Saturday we spoke with Dave Mejias, the Long Island county legislator who’s taking on Peter King.
Hi everybody. Vic here. Thanks for having me Howie and Christy! What a wonderful welcome.
Dr. Wulsin, thank you for running for office. We need more candidates like you.
Republican voters that I talk to believe that health care insurance companies should be allowed to do anything that maximizes profit, and that if some people get hurt, it’s too bad. How do we counter this message?
Ed*ard Teller,
Yours is a crucial question. The first thing we need to do to improve health care is be committed to making it happen. We need to care about health care for all Americans. The current Congress doesn’t.
I don’t live anywhere near OH, but I am going to the Act Blue page to make a donation. Thanks for keeping hope alive.
Funny, I missed last Saturday because I was in Peconic on Long Island. OK I’m in, and can I suggest we all try to get Congressman Murtha to make an appearance on Dr. Wulsin’s behalf?
P.S. I did manage to make in on Wednesday, just after you and everyone else left…I’m pushing the envelope on D_bloggin’ well at work.
Rob Zuber,
Government should be about people, not profits. And we should make that clear to voters.
Health care in particular should put people about the profits of pharmaceutical companies and HMOs. Medicare Part D is the perfect example.
Companies have a right to maximize profits, but they need to do so ethically and responsibly. And profits shouldn’t come at the expense of the well-being of Americans.
tbsa, funny you should mention that. When I spoke with Vic on the phone she was preparing to go meet Jesse Jackson for breakfast the next day.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 10
OK. But do you have suggestions about affordability and reach of the system for the uninsured, for instance?
And did I mention, PLEASE WIN!
Dr. Wulsin - I wish you the best in getting Mean Jean out of Congress! Your experience will be most welcome :-)
What are your views on health issues like the recent FDA ruling that allows spray-on viruses to be added to food (to combat Listeria) but don’t allow labeling the food that has these additives?
Also, what’s your position on pharmacists who don’t fill prescriptions for personal religious reasons?
tbsa,
Thank you so much for your contribution.
This race is winnable. We’re tied, as Howie pointed out, 44%-44% (see here:
http://www.wulsinforcongress.c.....asp?id=877).
The other reason to support this campaign is that, right now, it’s a low-money race. As of July 1, I had $25000 Cash on Hand, and Jean Schmidt had only $17,000.
That means that netroots support goes a long long way in this race. Your dollars mean more here than in the multi-million dollar Congressional races (which Democrats obviously also need to win so we can take back the House).
Hi, Dr. Wulsin:
Thank you so much for standing up and running.
Are you confident that all the votes will be counted in your race and that everyone who is eligable and wants to vote will be able to?
Thanks.
I was born in Cincinnati and my wing-nut Dad in Indy still likes to listen to WLW/AM out of Cincy. Jean Schmidt is so out there that, the not so silent dog whistle racist bloviator, Bill Cunningham has advised his close friend Schmidt on air to tone it down a little bit on his talkshow.
There is literal campaign gold to be mined from Crazy Jean’s witness questioning while serving on Mark Souder(R-IN) Human Resources committee. Please look up Jean Schmidt’s CSPAN appearence on the Plan-B and HPV vaccine hearings.
Dr. Wulsin, thank you for coming to speak with us today. Howie (and Christy) — that was a great intro. Thanks again for all the work you do with Blue America.
Dr. Wulsin, I’ve had Medicare for a few years because of disability. Through Medicare I have HMO coverage which isn’t bad at all, and the premium is manageable. If we as a nation can spend billions — maybe trillions on war profiteers, why can’t we provide Medicare for everybody?
Dr. Wulsin, I think that Medicare Part D was actually written by the health care lobbyists, and then rubber stamped by the Republican congress. This is also what happened with bankrupcy bill.
Is there going to be a debate with Jean Schmidt? I’d love to see one…
Thank you, THANK YOU for getting involved!
Seems every election we hear about all the women, ususally single, that wold vote Democratic, but don’t show up at the polls. Any ideas on how to get these women out to vote?
Welcome to FDL, Dr. Wulsin.
Over the last couple of decades, the federal government has been gradually eliminating civil service positions, particularly in the Defense Dept., and replacing them with contract employees. This is supposed to promote efficiency. One of the consequences, however, has been that government employees seldom do the technical or skilled work of running a government, instead being consigned to administrative roles. Assuming you have formed an opinion on this issue, do you think this is more efficient, and should the trend continue?
Dr. Wulsin, ya got $25 from me. Thank you for seeking to make America’s future brighter. We need more candidates like you, and we need you to win.
I hope you won’t think my question frivolous, but I have a concern for you should you win. Is the outfit your Congresswoman wears mandatory? Don’t you fear having to don that uniform on the House floor? Or will Jean’s be retired, with her?
A healer who honed her skills in East Africa, Kenya and Rwanda. And if I may make so bold, a hot chick as well. You had me from hello. Mean Jean, not so much.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 17
Hi Vic,
Best of luck from Texas. I just hit the tip jar ; )
Ed*ard Teller,
You’re asking serious and important questions. Before I go into details, I want to point out that we need to make our health care decisions based on science and evidence, not on ideology, profits, or political expedience.
Let me answer your question: We can reduce the costs of health care by (1) Using electronic medical records. EMRs will improve the information that doctors and nurses have access to, which will reduce mistakes and improve the quality of care. This will lead to long-term cost reduction.
(2) We need to totally overhaul Medicare Part D.
(3) We need to allow for re-importation of prescription drugs from Canada, as Sherrod Brown has advocated. I’m excited to work with Sherrod on this when we’re both in our new jobs in DC.
(4) Most importantly, we need to use our health care dollars for clinicians, for treatment, and for prevention — not padding the profits of big companies.
I’ve spent my life in prevention, and I know that we can reduce costs and increase quality by focusing on keeping people healthy and getting them care before high-cost treatment is necessary.
Hi, Vic. Good speech this morning in Glen Este!
Hello Dr. Wilsun, and welcome!
I am impressed with Ned Lamont’s argument that lack of universal healthcare in the U.S. actually stymies entrepreneurship because the small businessperson is leary of leaving a job they already have that provides healthcare to start their own business, and they are also concerned with the cost of providing benefits to their employees if they do start their own business. Do you agree? (I apologize for not stating this as elegantly as Mr. Lamont has.)
What other issues, besides healthcare, are you addressing in Ohio as you campaign?
Dr. Wulsin…
I am the parent of a wonderful daughter. What advice would you think would be appropriate to give a son or daughter that comes to you and says: hey pops, hey moms, I’m thinking of joining the military.
Oklahoma Kiddo: Have them read the great book: 10 Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military!
…and your little dog too,
Here’s the thing: As Sherrod Brown noted last week, all of us working for change in Ohio are focused on ensuring a clean and fair election. Check out Secretary of State candidate Jennifer Brunner’s plan for reform here: http://www.jenniferbrunner.com/platform.shtml . I will work with her to make sure these happen.
But we also have to be careful that these concerns don’t depress turnout. I don’t care how big our concerns are about Ohio’s voting system, this cannot lead to even a moment’s hesitation about whether to turn out and vote on election day. The only way to take back our democracy and clean up our voting system is to mobilize in such strong numbers that no dirty tricks can stop us on election day.
Checking out your blog Dr Wulsin and came across this…
Mean Jean: “Out to Lunch”
lol
TeddySanFran @ 24
Teddy, don’t forget to close your tags. [/snark]
iftthethunderdontgetya,
About the debates. I’ve challenged Jean Schmidt to 7 debates — one in each of our district’s counties. Lincoln and Douglas had 7 debates, and the people of the 2nd District deserve no less.
Does Jean Schmidt have the guts to debate me? Is she willing to defend her record and her infamous comments on the floor of the House?
You should ask her. Here’s her email address: schmidtcampaign@jeanschmidt.com
Also, take a look at what happened when I went Jean’s campaign office to challenge her to debate:
http://www.wulsinforcongress.com/blog.asp#blog84
Dr. Wulsin—thanks for stepping up to fight the good fight as well as stopping by to chat with us. Now I’m off to ActBlue.
Hi, Vic!
kay,
Thanks for being in Union Township this morning! We just got back. Wasn’t the rally energizing? Thanks for being part of the change!
Proud to help. Mean Jean is odious. Smug sense of entitlement. Good match for Lieberskunk.
Vic, we hope you wipe the flo’ with Mean Jean!
As an early retiree, I have an individual high-premium, high-deductible health-care policy that’s eating me alive. So naturally, my question is:
Do you believe single-payer is the way to go, and if so, how best do we get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?
Thanks and best of luck!
Welcome to the innernets! We are not all wild-eyed kids, blogging from our parents basement. I am a 46-year-old truck driver in Oklahoma that does not have the time to research candidates. I look for people like Howie and fdl to vet candidates for me to support. I have more money than time, and a nod from them is a donation from me. When you are victorious, be sure to spread the word that we are not crazies, just a committed and active community. I will help you. Return the favor from office and be an honest steward of the publics trust.
weeder,
Do you know that Ned and I lived in the same dorm in college? Go Lowell House!
Of course the high cost of health care is a burden on our economy. It’s dragging down small businesses and large ones alike. How can we compete globally when thousands of dollars of health care costs are slapped on every vehicle coming off the line at Ford, GM, and Chrysler?
Reducing the cost of health care is going to be a massive boon to our nation’s economy, as well as all Americans’ pocketbooks.
HA! Stopping by Mean Jean’s office was hilarious. Let’s put her “Out to Lunch” permanately. The times, they are definately a changin’!
Dr. Wulsin - wlecome, and good luck in this race. Your election will be a “two-fer” by replacing the vile Ms. Schmidt with your positive qualities. So I feel like the modest ActBlue contribution I just made is like a two-for-one deal!
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 32
I saw Jennifer Brunner on CSPAN this morning at the DNC meeting in Chicago.
She strikes me as a serious and impressive candidate.
But . . . I am worried about voter suppression and counting hijinks in this election. I want to see the votes for you counted fairly.
Any thoughts on that?
Dr. Wulsin thanks for your decision to run for congress.
Since you are in the healthcare field I would like to just say I would like to see any legislation to improve the delivery and availability of healthcare to all people should also include greater access and assistance with dental care. As you know, without a good foundation of dental care many health problems can become much worse. While very helpful to some, the dental assistance/insurance that most corporations offer (if at all) is inadequate and expensive for many families and individuals.
Best of luck.
Dr. Wulsin @ 35, that is an awesome picture! Of course, Mean Jean has been out to lunch longer than she’s been in Congress. (P.S. For those interested in these results, Mean Jean bested Katy Harris in the final round of Congressional Catfight)
But I think better than emailing Jean about a debate, would be emailing the newspapers in OH-2.
Oilfieldguy,
Thanks for the support! If we’re going to win this race and turn this country around, we’re going to need the support of the netroots — even if you’re not crazy and wild-eyed!
We have got to get the word out about this campaign. As I said before, it’s a low-dollar race and every bit you give goes a long way. We unseat Jean Schmidt and we’re one seat closer to a Congress that holds the Bush Administration accountable.
About the high cost of health care. Who is profitting the most from sick people? Wouldn’t that be the most attractive target to start with? Nothing wrong with profits–profiteering is a whole different thing.
Awesome. Thank you Dr. Wilsin, and Howie K yet again. Off to Act Blue yet again.
opps Wulsin
(must be that *ilson bug in my brain)
Mean Jean Schmidt is a cancer that needs to be excised from the body politic. Dr. Wulsin sounds eminently qualified to do the job.
Dr. Wulsin, I really like what you said about science above:
“I want to point out that we need to make our health care decisions based on science and evidence, not on ideology, profits, or political expedience.”
At Yearly Kos this summer, I attended a panel discussion chaired by Gen. Wesley Clark on the subject of science and politics. I heard a lot about how the Bush administration is making policy decisions that are contrary to scientific evidence and thought. This is a problem that extends well beyond the health care area. I look forward to seeing what you can do in this issue after you are elected.
iftthethunderdontgetya,
Right on. Make an appeal to bloggers across the country to pay attention. Once they do, the local press will to.
The press in OH-02 needs to start taking this race as seriously as the voters do. You realize the importance of this election, and so do all of the people I meet at parades and restaurants and while walking the district.
Tell the press that they should take it seriously too.
Oilfieldguy (#49)– that’s a great thought: profits, yes/profiteering NO!
Dr. Wulsin,
I work on an Arizona Indian Reservation. Reservation communities are in great need of more and better health services. Diabetes and obesity are huge problems. When you are elected I hope that you spend sometime looking into the needs of tribes nationwide. There are more than 500 tribes and 300 reservations.
Dr. Wulsin - first, I’m so glad you are running for office in Ohio and are focusing on the health care crisis in our country. During the Clinton administration, health care costs seemed to be coming under control (though after Hillary’s unsuccessful task force the health care mess wasn’t addressed to the extent it should have been).
However, since 2000, health care costs have increased precipitously each year. Every company I have worked for - large and small - has been negatively impacted as they struggle to provide employees with decent coverage.
Also - I’m glad you are also focused on cleaning up the election process in Ohio. My daughter was one of those students standing in line for hours at Kenyon College, waiting for her turn to vote. Blackwell should be in jail, not running for elected office.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have you in the House and Lamont in the Senate? I’ll be happy to support you with a financial donation to your campaign. And I certainly do hope “the times, they are a changing.”
weeder,
As for other issues that matter to me. Democrats need to start talking more about Iraq and real national security.
The Iraq war has been a distraction from the real threats to our national security. And it’s blatantly clear that the Bush Administration doesn’t have a plan for Iraq. We need a new course — not the same old course.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 27
Thank you — I’ll do my part to help this race along. It doesn’t look like you’ll need much more than money as long as you can get the word out!
OH-2 be blue again!
neurophius,
As for science and politics: Our homeland security policy should be based on evidence and accurate intelligence.
I do believe that terrorism is a serious threat to our nation. My young cousin, who’s volunteering on the campaign in other room right now, lives in NYC. I want her to be safe. And I want her to have confidence that our government is looking out for her and protecting her.
But our current Congress and the Administration are treating national security like a partisan game and an boondoggle opportunity for their corporate friends.
That gets in the way of them finding and using the facts and evidence that we need to keep our country safe.
Musicsleuth (#58), the GOP has already shown last year that they will spend any amount to hold on to their seats. They dumped millions into OH-02 and CA-50 to hold those seats. For Vic to get her message out, she absolutely needs more money and she can’t look to the DCCC or to Big Business, only to people who care about good governance and to people who care about her issues.
Many of us followed Paul Hacketts race so we got a feel for your district…
Can you tell us the three main issues you are hearing from voters in your district?
Dr. Wulsin, I am excited to have real doctors & hands on practitioner run for office. I left the nursing profession after 20 plus years in acute care and 11 yrs working insurance industry with total disgust. When you become a victim of your own profession….
Would you advocate for Medicare for All or another version of univeral healthcare?
musicsleuth,
That’s right. We already have the right message and the right vision.
If you can help us get the money and grassroots support we need to get that message out, this is one race that even marathon-runner Jean Schmidt won’t win!
Howie Klein @ 61
That was my point — I’m sending money, her message and positions don’t need any help — the word just needs to get out :-)
Howie,
If the RNCC or RNC has to put a single dollar in this race this year, they’re going down in an enormous land slide.
They’ve spent far more money on Jean Schmidt than they ever wanted to. I’m not too worried about them getting involved this year.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 60
Often times, politics is about priorities. What would your priorities be for national security? In other words, if you had to choose three (or more) things to change about how we’re protecting ourselves, what would they be?
Dr. Wulsin, we welcome you with open arms. I’m particularly heartened by your statement about needing long-term vision. We will have a mess on our hands for many years to come. In addition to healthcare and Iraq, which are enormous issues, do you have any other priorities you think we need to pursue? Apologies is this has already been addressed.
Whatever you do, please don’t let the DLC get involved in your campaign. When elected, tell Rahm Emanuel to take a hike. We need leaders like you, Lamont, Findgold, etc. to be the spokespeople for Democrats.
AZ Matt,
Indian reservations are places where preventive medicine and education are particularly important. Our conventional medical system has done too little to overcome the cultural barriers that limit access to quality health care for native Americans.
I need to learn more about the state of our Indian reservations, and am looking forward to doing so.
It takes incredible fortitude for someone to step forward and run for political office, especially for a Democrat to have to face the hatred spewed from the mighty right-wing wurlitzer. My hat is off to you lady, these guys are brutal. If you have any question on how to deal with the zealots from the right, I strongly recommend the multiple Late-Nite posts put up by our own TRex. He operates from the principle, never explain, never defend always attack. Worthwhile reading.
Dr. Wulsin, I realize you are more than a “healthcare” candidate, but oh well: I want to say again how much I feel “Medicare for all” is the answer.
For one thing, how else will people trust in the electronic maintenance of health care records? Forget the Republican meme of distrusting government. People do trust the government. Would we prefer that a private corporation maintain our IRS records? No. I see the benefits of the EMRs, but I see the potential for abuse, too.
But the main thing is, for the economy — healthcare needs to be divorced from employment. Do you agree with this?
PS, it’s a real pleasure to contribute to your campaign.
For my part, I’ll prod the SF Chronicle and other Bay Area regional media outlets. SFGate ran a “scary Speaker Nancy Pelosi campaign” article recently. I’m going to “spotlight” this FDL post, and ask my local media to cover Dr. Wulsin’s campaign. Our local media should show San Franciscans an Ohio candidate who’ll be in the Democratic house MAJORITY in 2007.
Gotta go make some money to pay off that credit card that I keep pulling out on Saturday mornings.
Howie, thanks for featuring another great candidate. Go Victoria!
Cujo359,
Great question. I’ve got six priorities. Here’s a link, courtesy of one of our local bloggers.
http://ohio2006elections.blogs.....html#links
What do you think about these priorities?
One thing you might want to bring up about healthcare costs are the exhorbitant stock options the HMO’s give their officers.
Case in point:
One person.
How many kids could be covered for 1.6 Billion dollars?
How many elderly?
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 60
A wee bit of exception. I don’t feel terrorism is an existential threat to our Republic. George Bush’s cult of authority is. Terrorist surely can kill and destroy buildings and people, however Bush is destroying the idea of what it means to be an American. I know that no candidate can say such things in todays climate, but just so you know, their are a lot of us that feel this way.
meta,
Our energy policy is a mess. It’s a danger to our environment and our national security. It’s a burden on our economy and it’s a tragedy for our children and their children.
But there are good solutions. Let’s start by promoting alternative and sustainable energy sources. It’s so obvious I feel like I’m saying something trite. But our government still doesn’t get it.
Take a look at my energy policy principles: http://www.wulsinforcongress.c.....asp?id=886
Tomorrow my husband & I are attending yet another spaghetti benefit fundraiser to help a middle class family with medical costs, this time a friend undergoing 2nd round of chemo. I don’t remember these benefits happening a couple of decades ago & now it’s a weekly occurrence in my small town.
We have a small business & had to change to a higher deductible health care plan for us & our employees when the yearly cost reached $70,000. The different plan requires us to fill out more paperwork so it feels as if we are not only paying for but also having to be managers of the health care for all of us.
Health care insurance costs in this country hurts not only americans but businesses. It’s quite ironic that legislation that initially benefits pharmaceutical & insurance companies, ultimately ends being very detrimental to them in the (not so) long run.
john in sacramento,
Good point. Thanks for the link.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 74
That’s a good list. It certainly hits most of my areas of concern. I’m always a little troubled by the “securing our borders” talk, but there’s probably more that can be done there. Do you agree with the requirements for a passport for Canadians and Americans crossing into the U.S.? It sometimes seems like we’re going a little ID-crazy here.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 35
Welcome Dr. Wulsin,
From your blog on this:
Dr. Wulsin first asked Schmidt to debate three weeks ago, proposing an event in each of the Ohio 2nd’s seven counties. Schmidt didn’t respond—and when a Cincinnati Enquirer reporter tracked down her chief of staff to ask why, he disdainfully dismissed not only Vic but the voters of Ohio: “Who’d show up anyway?”
Who would show up? Me, and I live in Michigan! I come from a military family and she disgracefully insulted America as a whole. Perhaps she needs a “Lincoln and Douglas Debate Float” to follow her around until it sinks in it’s her duty to your state to debate you, she owes your constituents nothing less than to honor basic political protocol. The question should be: “Who would not show up?”
Thank You for showing up today, you are an impressive candidate and I wish you much luck on winning, we need more strong women exactly like you in office.
I dug out my plastic again and gave a small sum to the good Doctor as well as to that oh-so-cute John Laesch running against Denny Hastert
Dr. Wulsin, wonderful to see you here! I’ll be voting for your future colleague Mary Jo Kilroy up in the 15th district, and I’m looking forward to a blue Buckeye sweep this November.
Yesterday I followed Paul Hackett’s call to arms at the Daily Kos and signed up at the We Unite Ohio site. How much influence do the Russell Johnson - Ken Blackwell - ORP types have in the 2nd district, and how relevant is that movement as an issue in your campaign? How do you approach voters who are attracted to right-wing religious mindset?
Vic, you may have answered this and I’ve missed it in my running back and forth between threads, but I see that LindaR and I have raised essentially the same issue:
Do you feel single-payer (or, as LindaR phrases it, healthcare divorced from employment) is the way to go? If so, how do we best get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?
Dr. Wilsun, thank you for your intelligent and civil approach to politics. Your web site is great. I’m grateful for your attention to the environment and energy, as well as education. I spent the better part of a long career in higher education, and I’m truly saddened by our current state of affairs. Thank goodness for private philanthropy or we would be in horrendous shape.
In addition to money, what do you feel your campaign needs on the ground at this point?
When you get to Congress, look up my representative, Jim Cooper. He’s a pretty bright guy.
Dr. Wulsin, regarding emailing newspapers to spotlight a debate (or hiding from same) in OH-2, are these the main two?

P.S. Awesome cartoon!
Shez,
I love the Lincoln-Douglas float idea. I’ll get the volunteers right on it!
I agree (surprise surprise!) that we need more strong women in office. I’m so grateful to Howie for making me part of Blue America.
Wouldn’t “Victoria” be a nice woman’s name to put on the Netroots Endorsed list? I think Francine, Darcy and Linda need some company!
Dr. Wulsin,
Thank you for taking the time to come to the blog and talk to us. The main stream media tend to portray us as deranged Maoist guerillas hehe, so I imagine it must be somewhat of a surprise for political candidates to come here and see us talking about our favorite recipes and gardening :)
I also think there is a tremendous disconnect between the elected incumbents and their constitents generally…and if more politicians left the beaten track of the stage-managed events, and just talked to and listened to regular people like you’re doing here, the country would be so much better off.
I don’t live in Ohio, but I wish you all the best! The polling certainly looks promising.
Dr. Wulsin,
I’m so happy to see that you are passionate about health care.
On that message alone, you’ll win.
A recent experience (I’m a former ER tech) as a patient was kind of sad. A visitor told me she had not gone back to her doctor after her last TIA because several co-workers had gotten dropped from their insurance when they got sick. People are really upset about this.
I like your energy policy. Someday, you should check out my position on energy.

LOL- you too, huh? It’s my penance for working on Saturdays….
(for Mary: tithing for the tie thing?)
masaccio,
I’ll be sure to get to know Jim Cooper when I get to DC. I like the way he stands up to Bush on stem cell research!
Greetings from South House (Radcliffe ‘66). I’m glad to see that you post an occasional diary over at Daily Kos. I’ve become persuaded that every campaign needs a “Kiss Float.” Is there one single image that captures Mean Jean? Yes, she got booed on the House floor, but that was because she has bad manners, not because of the substance of what she said. That will do if there’s nothing better, but is there anything else that might work? A nice picture of her out shooting tame birds with Cheney, maybe?
iftthethunderdontgetya,
Yeah, those are the biggest two papers. Also, the Portsmouth Daily News, the Clermont Sun, Pike County News Watchman.
