As we've noted, the intrepid Bob Geiger has been doing yeoman's work documenting the Democrats who have been naughty and nice with regard to supporting the party they expect to support them and the state of Connecticut's Democratic nominee in the November Senate race, Ned Lamont.
Says Bob (email):
I think that between Kos and Firedoglake readers we rang their phones off the hook today and spokesmen for Feinstein and others who have committed are begging me to get an update out there so that their boss's tepid endorsements will get them off the hook.
If you were one of those who took the trouble to make a call yesterday, take a bow -- it's working. Meanwhile, Bob reports that Mary Landrieu has come out in support of Holy Joe. That's really kind of remarkable considering some of Joe's best handiwork was chairing the committee that approved Michael Brown in 42 minutes (listen to him in the YouTube above defending King George's divine right to appoint any useless crony he saw fit even in the wake of Katrina). New Orleans is still a bit of a mess as a result, or hasn't Landreau noticed?
If you haven't used our new Spotlight feature, take it for a whirl by pressing the "spotlight" button below. Perhaps there are a few journalists who might want to ask Ms. Landrieu how her endorsement furthers the interests of her constituents, and how those her state's African American community feel about it?

If DiFi gave a tepid endorsement of Ned, that’s more than I expected. I’ll take it, but let’s just say that I’m not impressed.
How do things stand in terms of the DSCC and its support - specifically, its money? The ubiquitous, iniquitous anonymous sources that Hill reporters are so fond of have said that there is at least one group of senators pushing to have no DSCC money go into CT, since the state will stay democratic no matter who wins. Of course, that depends on whether you believe Joe is a democrat.
More than just endorsing Ned, or declining to endorse Joe, we need the DSCC phones to ring as well, to make the message plain as day: if you diss the party and provide cover to BushCo, you will pay the price.
Heh, I thought this was Charles Johnson’s theme song, but it fits HoJo, too.

Why can’t Reid, Kerry, Kennedy & co. come down HARD on traitors to the party such as Joe, Landrieu and Pryor? Treat ‘em the way they should treat Joe. No committees, no strategy sessions, no communication. They’re lepers!
(The Repubs would never screw up their election chances like this. I’m beginning to wonder if the Dems would be any more competent if they had control. They sure aren’t competent when it comes to getting elected!)
This piece at Huffpo would be really funny if it wasn’t so tragic…
Senator George Allen’s racial remark to a 20 year old Indian man last week, has re-highlighted accusations that the Senator is a bully and a bigot. Senator Allen’s sister, Jennifer Allen, documents many cases of her brother’s bullying in her book Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach’s Daughter. Read the excerpts below.
Explaining why she is scared of heights, Ms. Allen writes that “Ever since my brother George held me over the railing at Niagara Falls, I’ve had a fear of heights.” [Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach’s Daughter, page 43]
Referring to George’s relationship with one of her boyfriends: “My brother George welcomed him by slamming a pool cue against his head.” [Fifth Quarter: The Scrimmage of a Football Coach’s Daughter, page 178]…

August 25-27, 2006, there will be a convention for all people who care about New Orleans.
The Rising Tide Conference will be a gathering for all who wish to learn more and do more to assist New Orleans’ recovery from the aftermath of the natural disasters of both Hurricane Katrina and Rita, the manmade disaster of the levee and floodwall collapses, and the incompetence of government on all levels. We will come together to dispel myths, promote facts, share personal testimonies, highlight progress and regress, discuss recovery ideas, and promote sound policies at all levels. We aim to be a “real life” demonstration of internet activism as the nation prepares to mark the one year anniversary of a massive natural disaster followed by governmental failures on a similar scale.

Thank you, Joe’s ego, for agreeing to this interview.
No problem. Joe is a great guy, a terrific guy. Of course Joe would allow his ego to be interviewed. And who could blame you for wanting to talk to Joe’s ego about Joe? Do you want to ask questions, or do you just want Joe’s ego to talk about Joe?~….

Hrmph. If true, Allen’s issues may go a bit beyond “mere” bullying.
Oh god. I just had a BFO!
The “president has the right to appoint whoever he wants” crowd is a subsidiary of the Incumbent Protection Racket! It’s another way of quashing public oversight/approval of who gets the goodies — in this case, the cushy jobs.
The less oversight, the less someone has to be actually qualified for a position, the more likely thems that’s got ‘em will be thems that keeps ‘em. And then those plumbs can be kept in a little bag to hand out to people who contribute to campaigns “the right way.”
sonate, the problem is that Senate Democrats are too dumb to realize when they’re being attacked, whether it’s by their “friends” in the media who legitimize Ann Coulter and her fascism-friendly fans, their “friends” in the GOP who are the original concern trolls, or their fellow Democrats who contend that things like party loyalty and discipline are for the mean and intolerant (and successful) Republicans.
Some Democrats get this. But not enough, and not enough yet. People wonder why we don’t win elections? It’s because we have leaders who can’t/won’t lead, and followers who can’t/won’t follow. Lamont is the litmus test for this: Support Lamont, or you’re sabotaging the party almost as much as Joe Lieberman, and you’re too dumb to see that he’s using your “friendship” to trap you into helping keep the party impotent and muddled.
For some reason I’m experiencing some serious Deja Vu with this thread. The party “leadership” has to be brought to realize that loyalty has to run both ways. And they wonder why they keep losing elections.
Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La.) is a grave disappointment. Though her move to support Lieberman in not a surprise, considering this individual is considered one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate.
>or hasn’t Landreau noticed?Cedric won’t listen to me at all.
Senator Landrieu oughta support her party. And stop getting me in trouble.
Sorry if this has been addressed before- but wouldn’t Joe have to “unbecome” a Democrat to run as a candidate on another party ticket in CT? Once the petition sigs. are approved, how can he legally in CT be both a member of the CTforLie party and the Democratic party? Surely he has to vote for himself as a member of the CTforLie party (registered member) and not a Dem?
Need something to make you smile on “Hump Day”? Check out this butterfly diary.
Jacqrat, thanks for the tips, I just sent my first “spotlight” to three Louisiana papers.
I called the DSCC asking why they didn’t put pressure on Lieberman to drop his Independent bid. The person who answered said, “Only our chairman, Senator Schumer, can make that decision.” HEY, SCHUMER, WAKE UP!
What might be taken as reticence to acknowledge Jilted Joe’s obvious repudiation in the primary by the majority of Senate Demos is more likely the same reaction that we see in DEERS CAUGHT IN HEADLIGHTS. In other words, they have no idea as to what is actually going on.
The phone calls and emails are the equivalent of HONKING THE HORN LOUDLY TO SAVE THEM FROM THEIR OWN DEMISE.
Keep honking the horn! If they don’t hear it, well, two words: Venison Stew….
AbuG money quote:
There are between 5,000 and 6,000 extremist websites on the Internet, each one encouraging extremists to cultivate relationships with like- minded people. These are the home-grown terrorists that you have heard about.
This radicalization is happening online and can therefore develop anywhere, in virtually any neighborhood, and in any country.

karen, I think you unearthed something important. It doesn’t sound like the people doing to work at the DSCC are too pleased with their boss’ decision.
OK apologies in advance. I was EPU’ed but it was an honest EPU. I never saw it coming and there it was or rather wasn’t.
Re impeachment,
I hate to go to the Republicans for pointers, but if this was about Bill Clinton, do you really think they would have any problem with talking about impeachment, whether they thought it was likely or not? Do you really think they would have any difficulty about talking about impeachment as well as other things? If anyone said that impeachment was fringe or a distraction, I can already hear the response. What will it take for you? How many 911s or Iraqs until it’s time for you to say he’s got to go? How many more of our cities have to sink beneath the waves or go up in flames before you think you’ve had enough?
Acting as if impeachment is some kind of taboo, not to be talked about in polite company, is yet another case of keeping our powder dry. We must have by now some of the driest powder in the universe. The onus shouldn’t and doesn’t need to be on us. It should be squarely on anyone who still defends Bush after 911, Katrina, and Iraq. If these don’t deserve impeachment, what does?
John Casper: It must be very daunting for the DSCC young workers to hear call after call about Droopy Joe, and their boss won’t make a move. It must be totally frustrating for them!
I would have thought that Senate Democrats would want to avoid any possibility of being asked the question: “Why should Americans believe Democrats will stand up for them, if you won’t even stand up for the voters of your own party?”
If Senate Dems won’t fight Holy Joe, Karl’s gonna be faxing this question out to all his “journalist” friends about the third week of October…
karen allen- also see my question #20- any one from CT? How can Joe still officially be a “Dem”, at least once the sigs. are approved?
Prof- great question!!!
Valley Girl: In the general election, one does not have to declare oneself as a Republican, Democrat or Whatever to vote for a candidate. That’s only in the Primary election.

karen allen- okay- thanks- I wasn’t thinking of it from that perspective. So, I guess Lieberman is not a registered member of the “CTforLie” party. So maybe it’s not a “Party of One”, it’s a Party of None.
Professor Foland @ 30
You’ve nailed it. This is the theme with which we should be hammering Dems who don’t support Ned.
The Rude One features a post on a book and a link to Amazon. The book, Paca La Macaca Va Al Mercado, is one of a series of children’s books. My review (in the style of Patriotboy) of this book is up, though I don’t know for how long. The title translates to “Paca the Macaca Goes to The Market”. My review is titled, “George Allen Would Like This Book”. Do check it out, if you please.
LindaR- thanks. In response to KA’s explanation, I guess it’s a “Party of None” hehe (#37)???
But then again, you’d think that to petition to be on the ballot for a different party, you’d have to join that party… so maybe the question is not closed. Expertise in CT election law needed!

The loyalty of members of the U.S. Senate is not to the Republican Party or to the Democratic Party…but to the special interests that fund their campaigns. Some would argue that the most powerful lobby in Washington is the pro-Isreali NeoCon lobby. This is the group that is pressuring the Democrats not to publicly support Ned Lamont. They’ll do everything in their power to “buy” the election for their poster boy — Joe Lieberman.
It may take more than emails and phone calls to get these spineless Democrats out of their bunkers. It’s just a reminder that we’ve got the best politicians that money can buy.

It seems that more and more people are arguing that and I’m one of them. How many spies and agents have to be kicked out of the US before this issue really gets publicly examined?
Well folks, as some of you know, I live a sheltered life wrt TV–don’t have on and thereby don’t see lots of the pictures until later. (For example, I didn’t see the planes fly into the buldings until I saw Michael Moore’s Bowling for Columbine about a year after the film came out.) This is the first time that I have seen this kind of footage of NOLA with all the water. And to hear JoeNO crapping along in the background is, well, shocking. What an uncaring bastard.
We’ll never get to see EPU again if we don’t get rid of the italics.
Neokneme - If you put Rove, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Hayden, and Mehlman all on one side of my scales, with Gonzales on the other, they wouldn’t even be enough to cause a quiver. He and Ashcroft and their crews have the weight of every bit of the moral responsiblity for most of what has happened to and with this country and they are unforgiveable. The rest are just the general crew of motley partisans who scatter death and destruction, the ones that every party and every Presidency knows in some way or another.
CTBob has a good post up re: CT House races vis a vis Joe. Nice graphic too.

On the flip side of the coin, this Friday, Ned Lamont (D-CT) will come to Vermont
http://www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=11515
to stump and raise money for his fellow Democratic candidates (Peter Welch U.S. House, Scudder Parker VT Gov.) and Bernie Sanders, who is running for U.S. Senate with the endorsement of the State Democratic Committee (and every Democrat I know).
Ned Lamont (D-CT) is wasting no time helping Democrats who share his vision, and his friends at DFA (http://www.democracyforamerica.com/) who supported him early in this process.
Sad to see another straggler like Mary Landreiu hurting the cause. On the other hand, it is truly wonderful and rewarding to see Democrats in Vermont ASKING Ned Lamont (D-CT) to come campaign for THEM!
Ned Lamont (D-CT) has plenty on his plate right now and he is still giving for the benefit of the party nationally. We really can’t thank this guy enough.

[shaking head in befuddled, “I have no response to that” bamboozledment]
VG–actually, it’s a devastating question, the kind Dems should be going to any lengths to avoid being asked. (Also: Hi! Haven’t seen you here in a bit.)
Re impeachment: I think it’s possible Dems have confused a strategy for “winning elections” with “winning power to change things.”
It is very possible to do the first without doing the second. It’s entirely possible that actions that improve the odds of the second actually decrease the odds of the first, and vice versa. So the question is: which probability are you trying to maximize with your campaign strategy?
I think impeachment is one of the issues that highlights this tension. A consistent theme of impeachment in Democratic campaigns would, if successful and leading to control of Congress, bring tremendous power to change things. It would rightly be seen as a mandate, an agreement forged with the American public to take forceful steps. Such a theme would probably also reduce the chance of actually taking Congress.
Wiser people than I might claim that simply getting hold of Congress is such a boon, and so likely by itself to lead to serious changes, that the difference between the two is small. That may be, but I’m not completely convinced.
Holy Joe is another instance of the tension. Keeping him “on the reservation” is the highest-probability move for winning control of Congress. However, having Joly Joe in the Senate in February of 2009, rather than Ned, will strongly undermine any claim of a sweeping mandate for change.
Or, to put all of this in terms George Felix Allen might understand: are Dems kicking field goals when they need to be throwing Hail Mary’s? In many situations, the Hail Mary is the rational call.
Looking up at muted CNN to see “SUSPECT ARRESTED IN THAILAND IN JONBENET RAMSEY KILLING”
Here are the Dems of the Gang of 14
Joseph I. Lieberman, Connecticut
Robert C. Byrd, West Virginia
E. Benjamin Nelson, Nebraska
Mary Landrieu, Louisiana
Daniel Inouye, Hawaii
Mark Pryor, Arkansas
Ken Salazar, Colorado
Landrieu, Pryor and Salazar are the ones, so far, racing to support Lieberman.
I think that all the Dems in the Gang realize that if people begin to want accountablity - they are on the front line to go. Saving Joe is, to them, saving themselves.
Professor Foland at 30 and Ed Deevy at 43 have identified the problem. The combined effect of the two concepts is our problem.

Hugh @28, about impeachment, I take another page from the Repub playbook, and keep it simple: “If he lied us into war, we should impeach. We need to find out.” The premise is clear; let them get defensive with a long-winded dispute of the hypothetical. Then I say, “hmmm I wish I knew.”

fahrender 44 & Morris 38–we absolutely should not be chanting this publicly; no need to help the GOP.
But in our private calls to Senate offices we should be helpfully reminding Senate Democrats of what’s coming their way if they don’t crack the whip on Joe.
LindaR- I just left a comment for CTBob with links to this discussion. Perhaps he will be able to help sort this out. It does seem sensible that one would have to change party registration to appear on the ballot for another party’s banner, but maybe this subtlety was overlooked in CT. Apparently it was an oversight of the CT legislature that the primary date and the filing date weren’t sorted out before to prevent the “sore loser” scenario.

“Ironically, a lawmaker with a good shot of replacing Lieberman atop the Governmental Affairs panel, Sen. But the two Democrats who outrank him, Sens. these so called “3rd party” lines are not party lines at all. They are simply ballot lines with any name not already taken and not misleading.
If I get the signatures, I can put in the Looseheadprop line in the machine and folks can vote on it. It’s merely a ballot line, not a political party. Usually the person running on these kinds of ballot lines are also running on a major party line and only need the extra ballot line for crossover voters who cannot bring themselves to vote on the line of the party they usually oppose.

I am not familiar with the type of voting machines in CT BTW. Punch cards here.
Some wiser than I, might argue that if we hadn’t had impeachment hearings on Nixon’s presidential behavior and prevarications, he probably would have stayed in office. And still others might suppose that the real value of impeachment is accountability, symbolism and setting an example. And other citizens might premise that since Bush lied, with knowledge and intent about the reasons for attacking Iraq, which not incidentally has resulted in thousands of Americans killed or wounded, and countless innocent Iraqis disposed of, that these actions by the President fit the profile of high crimes and misdemeanors. And there are folks who, no doubt might say we have no choice under the Constitution but to hold impeachment hearings.

“…..Good judgment is an essential part of good governance. But we’re bogged down in Iraq, and hamstrung in the war against terror, by leaders who lacked judgment, historical perspective, openness to other cultures and plain old common sense. We offer something different.
But in the final analysis, the results of this election say less about me, and more about the people of Connecticut. They turned out in record numbers; they spoke every day with a simple eloquence and urgency about the country we love. They oppose the war and the fiscal nightmare crafted by President Bush and his allies. But their vote, finally, was one based on pragmatism and reality, on optimism and hope. And it is to these ideals and values that we plan to address my campaign in the months until November.”
