From the NYTimes this morning:
...The entire effort was swiftly coordinated by the Republican National Committee and the White House, using the same political machinery that carried them to victory in 2004. It began in the days before the anticipated loss of Mr. Lieberman, a staunch supporter of the war in Iraq, to Ned Lamont, a vocal war critic whose victory Republicans used to paint Democrats as “Defeatocrats.”That word originated in a White House memorandum by Mr. Bush’s press secretary, Tony Snow, suggesting ways to frame the debate, that was shared with officials, including Ken Mehlman, the Republican chairman, and Karl Rove, the president’s top strategist....
And a top Republican strategist cautioned that the party’s candidates still faced serious challenges in states where the war and Mr. Bush were overwhelmingly unpopular.
But at the very least, news of the plot helped the White House and the Republican Party achieve something they have struggled to do all year: bring the party forcefully together with the president.
The plan came together at the same time that Mr. Bush and his top security aides, as well as Vice President Dick Cheney, were being intensively briefed on the unfolding British investigation. That led Democrats to charge that the White House had actively used the plot to its political advantage.
“For people to suggest there was somehow a larger, coordinated effort between the Lieberman loss and the disruption of the terror plot is just absurd,” said Brian Jones, a spokesman for the Republican Party.
Administration officials said that those who had been briefed on the plot had not expected any arrests for several days, well after the initial political fallout of the Lieberman campaign would have played out.
But in several interviews, the officials said the attacks had reinforced arguments they had devised to meet Mr. Lieberman’s expected defeat.
Officials said they had identified a Lieberman loss as a potential watershed moment that could reinforce the Democrats’ antiwar message — and scare Republicans out of taking White House advice to embrace the war in Iraq and national security in general. That advice was wearing thin as the death toll in Iraq continued to climb....
No matter how much spin you put on it, the bottom line is that the White House now has to use scare tactics on Republicans to get them to back the President's agenda. It's called failure, and no one is buying the spin any longer, not even Mehlman, who sputtered his way through Meet the Press this morning. Pitiful. Geotge Bush's BFF Joe Lieberman showed the President for what he truly is: a wanna-be emperor with very tiny coattails these days, and the big fear for the White House is that Republicans nationwide would notice and adjust accordingly.
And they are.
Republicans are running away from George Bush and his failed policies to save their own electoral hides. And George Bush and his cronies are so weak, so laughably weak, that the only thing they have in their arsenal to force their own political allies to heel is to screech 9/11 at the top of their lungs and hope for the best.
And that is not nearly enough because the American public finds the carefully-crafted spin words without actual deeds to back them up hollow and false. Hot air and bullshit are not enough to win an election this year -- but it's all George Bush and the do-nothing Rubber Stamp Republican Congress has. And the bill for this continued failure and all the lies is about to come due.
Accountability is so hot, isn't it? Had enough?
UPDATE: The Muck says that the US rushed Britain on arrests in the terrorism bust from last week, that came on the heels of the Lieberman loss. Hmmm...anyone think that the CT referendum against Joe Lieberman and his support of the "Stay the Failing Course" Bush Presidency had anything to do with the push on this? Oh, heavens now. This WH and the current GOP leadership would never politicize national security policy.

Let’s own the phrase “Defeatocrat” - We are defeatocrats - we want to defeat this president and his congress.
Wasn’t it Harry Reid that said that actions have consequences?
Fitz…hurry.
Not only did they spin the info for their own purposes, but ChimpCo pushed the Brits into making the arrests before they were ready. The Brits weren’t done w/ their investigation. Now it appears that they may not have arrested everyone involved — which is why airport security remains so high.
Lies Lies Lies Yeah!
Christy!!
Thanks for the clip of 80’s fun music. I love that song!
When the house of cards starts to crumble, no amout of “hot air and bullshit” can put it togther again.
My tinfoil fear is that they may be reduced to attacking another American city, since their spin is obviously falling flat. All of their thug voters are out in the burbs/countryside, so it’s not like they have any loyalty to the cities. Hell, O’Reilly flat out offered San Francisco to OBL right on tv.
Oh, and I prefer this version of the video hehe.
Speaking of language (and a late response to the last thread):

Actually, its modern heavy usage originates with Newt Gingrich and Frank Luntz. The New Yorker had a very good piece on the history of the slur.
Hertzberg is correct that it is a deliberate slur. Anyone using this term should get a response the same as if they had used the n-word or any ethnic slur.
For most people, it is very hard to sell a product that you don’t believe in. Especially if the people you are trying to sell it to know it is a shitty product.

did anyone else hear George S. on This Weak sniggering about the blogosphere paranoia and the timing of the arrests/benefit to Joe? between the NBC report that the U.S. rushed the busts and this NY Times article, it’s hard to imagine that the world should be so serendipedous to the admin that this all just fell in their lap…
Say it like it is! I posted the link to teh NBC story about the timing of the terror plot. Thos of us who can think, knew this intuitively from the first minute.
It’s refreshing to see that the MSM is starting to publish the facts. About time and not a minute too soon.
The Cheney Admin: all spin, all of the time!
I’m often amazed that anyone would still give even a smidgen of credence to anything that the Cheney Admin says.
It’s all about lying for the sake of political dominance (in the Repug’s mind, that’s a good thing), and lying because…well…because the truth might set people free!
But even Lincoln knew that eventually the people would call bullshit!
I’m sorry Christy, as Machiavellian as some politicians in the US are, there’s no reason to go looking for absurd conspiracy theories underlying every bad thing that happens in the rest of the world. As I note on my blog today, there’s plenty of evidence here of a British politician’s presumed power grab as well.
what was the other terrorist case that the admin hurried up, much to the case’s detriment?
ReddHedd !
Remember when Bush used to say “results matter” all the time? We don’t hear that from him anymore. Little Boots wants to hold 3rd graders responsible for their school’s continued funding based on their results on tests his brother sells, but don’t you dare hold anyone in the Bush regime responsible for a damn thing. The GOP controls everything in DC, but nothing is their fault.
God, I hate these people!
I apologise for my offensive remarks down below. I enjoy FDL very much and am sorry for the tone of my last comment. I am very frustrated with what is happenning to America and watching it go down the path that Hitler took Germany. I see so many similarities and it scares the h*ll out of me.
Once again please forgive me.
Oldcoastie at 18:
It could be revealing Plame’s identity and toppling down her efforts on Iran… not a terrorost case, exactly but an act of treason.
OldCoastie at 18 — are you thinking of the announcement during the 2004 campaign season about the cooperation of the al qaeda financier in Pakistan — which outed him as working for our side and, ultimately, mucked up the entire undercover op? All the communications lines went black, the e-mails rolled up, etc. Which is why, I believe, the Brits and Pakistanis waited to tell us about this latest investigation until it was nearing its end. Great to know that our allies mistrust our ability to handle sensitive information because our President needs to constantly play CYA with it, isn’t it?
Whoa.
Hair.
.
Correct me if I’m wrong on this, but even if the US was not pressuring Britain to make the arrests sooner rather than later, they still knew it was coming, and there can be no doubt that the message that emerged just prior to the plot being revealed was designed to score political points ahead of the news they knew was coming - even if those points might be delayed somewhat.
Someone might want to point out to Joe Lieberman that THIS is what partisan political posturing actually looks like.
The administration must have been overjoyed at the general timing of this thing -use it to slam the Democrats for nominating a candidate who opposes the failed policies of Iraq, take the cameras off the carnage in Iraq, back-seat the Israel/Hezbollah conflict, and start squawking “9/11! 9/11!” again.
Too bad - for them - it’s such an obvious ploy.
OldCoastie @ 18
It was an al qaeda member the Brits or Pakistanis had turned. They had access to his computer and were tracking emails and HE WAS GIVING THEM INSIDER INFO. One or 2 folks in the Bush regime couldn’t keep their mouths shut and it forced the British to arrest a small group before they were ready to. I think this was in summer ‘04.
Oops, FDL server burping again. Better get out the Pepto…
Nice one, Christy. Fits nicely with the comment I left towards the end of the last thread.

We do need to be more conscious of their gameplan; the two that Rove uses are 1) play up their strengths, and 2) attack on opponents’ strengths.
Polling has given Repugs the edge on national security, GWOT and defense for most of the last 5 years, but they’ve lost that edge and they’re scrambling — MANUFACTURING — a new edge.
Their opponents’ strength at this point in time is that they represent the opinion of a majority of the public; it’s a poor point to attack because doing so means they attack a critical mass of American voters.

What makes Joe run?
I guess this is a question a lot of people are asking. Here is man, on the eve of closing out his third term as a Senator, the most powerful political assembly in the world, who came close to becoming a vice president of the United States, ran for president (awesomely finishing in a 3-way tie for 3rd place in Iowa), and has enjoyed the privileges of the powerful and rich. Quite a resume by any measure.
Is it the thirst for power, the need for the limelight, the plaudits of the press and friends? It can’t be money because he could earn a lot more as a lobbyist than a senator. How can he claim he wants to serve the people of Connecticut when he has been ignoring them for so long now? What more does Joe need to prove to himself and the world? Does he feel he needs to overcome the loser image, the specter of defeat that has haunted him since 2000?
Well, unless Joe tells us, we are left with speculation. So, I am going to speculate, and since I am neither a journalist nor a politician I can speculate with immunity. I think there are a number of things driving Joe, including some I mentioned above. But there is something I did not mention above, and that is that I believe Joe has loyalties that go beyond the shores of these United States. As a devout Jew, Joe has political allegiances that include Israel. To put it bluntly, Joe’s constituency probably is not just the people of Connecticut and the people of the United States, but also to state of Israel.
There is a feeling among pro-Israeli factions that if Joe loses his senate seat, the senate will be losing a powerful voice for Israel. The threat of this possibility is causing a lot of trepidation in pro-Israeli factions, and stimulating a lot of political as well as financial support for Joe. There have been several reports here about Rabbi Gellman’s article in Newsweek, wherein the good rabbi wonders why so many Jewish liberals ended up voting for Lamont. The premise here is that if you are a Jew you should vote for Lieberman. Why? Because Isreal needs all the support from Congress that it can get, especially now.
Fair enough. Americans can vote for whom they please and they certainly are free to vote along ethnic or religious lines. It is all part of the democracy package. And it is fair enough for rabbi Gellman to chastise his fellow Jews if they voted for Lamont, though I wonder whether Newsweek is the best forum.
But we would be fools and blind if we, who are committed to a liberal agenda that seeks to correct the hideous errors and crimes of the Bush administration, did not recognize that the Israeli card is being played in this election contest between Lamont and Lieberman. And the game is being played with a lot of chips on the table.
What we have then: in the Lamont-Lieberman contest we have a conflation of the Iraq war issue and the Israeli/Lebanon/Palestine issue. For all intents and purposes in this election, they are now one and the same. When Lieberman speaks in support of Bush’s Iraq policy, he is also speaking in support of the Israeli policy.
Unreliable Sources…
KURTZ: Let me — let me just interrupt this commercial for Ned Lamont to ask you this, because there was this picture of Lieberman in black face that was distributed by Jane Hampshire, a liberal blogger who was working with the Lamont campaign.

Their powergrab is THEIR problem. “Mine own household have I not tended.” After the years of all talk and no action, I agree with Christy, the words ring hollow.
Dogstar at 42 — I hate to be the one to explain polling to you, but a poll which was taken immediately after the primary with a two-day window isn’t a reliable snapshot of public sentiment. It shows sorrow and empathy for Lieberman. Let’s wait and see where things are in a couple of weeks when people have had an opportunity to think about the whole of the race — and not just jump on a poll taken the day that the British terrorism plot foiling was announced. It is a long, long way to November, and Joe Lieberman just becomes more and more odious as you spend time listening to him whine.
Immediate post-primary poll, first Rasmussen, small sample, taken Wed/Thurs, NED way UP, not down, and I’m trying to be nice here, but
ain’t so.
Full disclosure: I live in New Orleans and the depth of my anger is vast.
OT Interesting story that’s getting little play outside Oregon: four pipe bombs have been found in the last week in towns in the Willamette Valley.
The story can be found here.
Apparently domestic terror doesn’t count quite as much as “international terror.” Perhaps that’s because it would scare the bejesus out of people to know that there are Americans angry and crazy enough to do this sort of thing.

I would not presume the necessity of need to defend CHS on any matter. But as far as conspiracy theories go, I would have to think that CHS is a very, very hard sell on that, based upon what I’ve seen on this format. If CHS does propone an opinion as to the possibility or certainly, the probability of a conspiracy, I would sit-up and take notice. Indeed. Perhaps I’m missing something in your comment. Respectfully.
wow, scory, that ‘Salem story is scary!
John McMain is supporting the Republican Senate nominee in CT, Alan Schlesinger. Ken Mehlman the GOP chairmain refuses to back the nominee but he says nice things about Lieberman.
So I think we have a new question to pose to Republican candidates everywhere: Are you a Schlesinger Republican or a Lieberman Republican?

lotus @ #40….
I don’t know if anyone here has read the Patriot Act or not, but I have read some of it and it is almost identical to Hitler’s Enabling Act.
There was one or two more laws that Hitler had too have passed before he gained total power legally over Germany. There are more revisions being worked on that will I believe will cover those laws Bush needs to obtain said power.
This is what scares me. If those laws are passed, what’s to stop Bush from remaining in office under those powers?
Even if there not passed, what’s to stop Bush from declaring Martial Law and suspending elections due too another attack on our shores?
I don’t believe that he will give up power willingly and if I recall when the National Guard was brought into New Orleans to help with evacuting those stranded they confiscated legally owned weapons from the citizens. There was no out cry from the NRA over this and I often wondered why. Are they too in bed with this administration? If so, then they know who has guns and who don’t. They also know who stands with them and who don’t. This is quite scary.
And I’m sorry that I offended you and any other here at FDL, however our country is in deep trouble and I am having a hard time seeing a good outcome for it.

I’m reading that we are now into excess of $300 trillion for Iraq… I’m wondering how many solar panels that might’ve bought and how much research could have been done…
my hope is that President Gore will declare a “Manhatten Project” (so to speak) that will, within 3.5 years, completely make mideast oil irrelevant… and that we will be able to sell that technology to the rest of world and recoup the costs for the whole dang thing…
Tony Snow’s construct “Defeatocrat” essentially applies to the Republicans. THEY lost the war in Iraq and now try to blame this shamefully disastrous defeat on the Democrats. During the last three and a half years, THEY were in charge. THEY have to explain the death of 2,600 young men to their respective families. THEY shrugged all attempts for a diplomatic solution of the Mid East conflict. The domocrats will attempt to save what little credibility and accountability is left after the Republicans raped and plundered the good name of America.

Now on point, thanx for the post, you folks with face time at the pulpit hafta keep callin’ “bullshit” on the corporate media…your congregants are gettin’ big enough and strong enough to take the message out on the street and into work and the 60% who oppose Bush and the war don’t jest oppose Bush on the war…they oppose Bush on EVERYTHING fer God’s sake.
The politics of lowered expectations was last used successfully by that friendly fascist Ronald Reagan. He came into office and promptly tripled the recession with tax giveaways so that when it came back to baseline he looked like Adam fuckin’ Smith. It is clear that the coordination between Rove and the corporate media is followin the same theory. If Clusterfuck goes from 33% to 35% er from 35% to 38%…it shows that the public has swung behind the war and the Democrats had better go pack up for the re-education camps.

…Apparently not all Republicans are buying into the Spin: Tom Ridge said in a Newsweek Interview (via HuffingtonPost.com) : Ridge Doesn’t See It Cheney’s Way
“At the same time, his vice president, Dick Cheney, darkly warned that the Connecticut primary victory of antiwar candidate Ned Lamont over Sen. Joseph Lieberman would only encourage “Al Qaeda types.”…
“(Interviewed by NEWSWEEK, former Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge bridled at his former colleague’s remark: ‘That may be the way the vice president sees it,’ he said, ‘but I don’t see it that way, and I don’t think most Americans see it that way.’)”
Thanks for the explanation of BFF.
Arianna’s non-answer is a very good lesson for us all.
Mr. Shari Annis and his ilk NEVER question those in power. They only question those who might question those in power. The trick is to keep from answering a direct question. ed was really great on FAUX this morning when he told Chris Wallace “There’s a bloodbath NOW!”
Two great posts, Christy.
And a few random things- I was in the security check line at Bradley Thursday morning (for many the first news of the thwarted terror attacks) and I heard a few cynical remarks from those also waiting…
The CT secretary of state Susan Bysiewicz was on local NPR saying that it was an oversight of the CT legislature that the date for submitting petitions for an independent run (Aug 9) came after the primary (Aug 8) and that she is going to start pressing for “sore-loser” legislation in CT. So, at this level at least, the meme “sore-loser” is being repeated.
People (Dems I suppose) in CT were bombarded with robocalls from DeLauro, Dodd, Clinton and Lieberman and were really turned off by this. The local opinion I’ve heard is that Joe can’t count on 48% of Dems in the future… duh. BTW, the Lamont campaign did not leave robocalls.
My impression is that folks in CT were totally unused to the level of attention that came from the Lamont-Lieberman primary. And, of course, that dissatisfaction with Lieberman has been brewing for a long time. When I did phone calling, I was surprised by one of the reasons that “fence-sitters” gave for considering a vote for Lieberman- “senority” so he has the power to help CT in a way that Lamont can’t. So, that has been cut out from under him. Gut feeling- it will take a while for the reality of the Lamont victory to sink in, and the more people get to know Ned, the more they are going to rally round their new star. And, Joe’s approval will keep dropping. My 2 cents.
This is Orwellian in the extreme.
Lieberman is defeated but the winners are tagged as Defeatocrats.
Nice going, Rove. You are, if nothing else, audacious.
It’s much more difficult for the GOP to make a real argument characterizing Dems as “Defeatocrats” than it is for the Dems to make the argument for characterizing the GOP as “Retard-licans!”

I lived through the collapse of the timber and fishing industries in the PNW, and let me tell you, get out of Portland and Seattle, and you can find people living on the margins of Third World standards now. They’re angry — the question is, what will it take to make them act?
Which gets us back to the topic at hand: Christie’s right, as damn near always. The latest “terror” distraction is meant to move attention away from the real issues, political, economic and social, which are starting to get to the MSM — and which threaten the Republican’s stranglehold on America.

Mr. Littledog and I watched the Mehlman segment because we read a comment that he had stumbled his way through it.
How I wish it were true. He spit out his talking points without so much as a breath. He turned every question to his delivering the points he came there to make.
“Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run. Cut-n-run.”
“Adapt to win. Must win. Missile Defense System. Cut funds.”
Bleh. I hate that sonofabitch and I thought he handily accomplished what he went there to do. :((((
teh Mehlman was truly pathetic on Meet the Press. He didn’t really answer a single question that would put him on a limb. His examples of reacting were laughable. Btw, can we point out Feingold and McCain as the way bipartisanship is supposed to work, the guys obviously like and respect each other but definitely don’t bend over backwards for each others positions like the sore loser did.

Second, as someone with family members and friends with Down’s Syndrome and other disabilities, I get really uncomfortable when this word is thrown around.

Sorry for the double entry, I was having posting issues. And to …and your little dog too, I agree he was spitting his talking points, but any question where he couldn’t dredge them up, like supporting the Conn. Repub. he was as wishy washy as they come. I hope at least some people can see when he gets off the reservation he is without good answers, much like a parrot.
