(Dave Mejias joins us live in the comments to chat with you about his candidacy. Please stop by the comments and give Dave a great FDL welcome. Thanks! -- CHS)
When I spoke with Dave Mejias on the phone a couple days ago I mentioned that I grew up in his Nassau legislative district-- you know, good way to establish a bond. He got excited. "Where?" he asked. And when I said "Roosevelt," the next words out of his mouth were "Chuck D, Julius Irving and Howard Stern." Dave Mejias isn't your father's brand of stuffy politician.
Two days short of one year ago I started writing about Peter King, the odious Republican congressman from central Long Island's mega-suburban district (NY-03), which takes in both the North Shore and South Shore and parts of Nassau and Suffolk. My first outburst against King-- the first of many to come-- was brought on by his appearance on MSNBC's Scarborough Country, where he showed up to call for the deaths of... "Tim Russert and the others." Actually, he was there to defend Rove exposing Valerie Plame as a covert CIA agent. And his exact quote was "And I think people like Tim Russert and the other, who gave this guy [Joe Wilson] such a free ride and all the media, they're the ones to be shot, not Karl Rove."
He hasn't changed much. Two days ago he was flapping his jaws again, this time railing at Connecticut voters for wanting to get rid of their rubber stamp U.S. Senator, Holy Joe Lieberman. Making an ass of himself again, King bleated that "fortunately, the third district is not composed of the left-wing bigots who went after Joe Lieberman." The bad news for King is that the third district is not composed of the right-wing bigots who are likely to tolerate his extremist voting record and his supine, rubber stamp posture towards all of George Bush's worst and most catastrophic policy initiatives. And, even worse for King, for the first time since he was elected in 1992 he has a vigorous and aggressive opponent who understands how to make voters-- Democrats, independents and Republicans-- confront actual voting records. King's is uniformly abysmal.
"Peter King," Dave told me on the phone, "has forgotten where he comes from, He fights harder for the lobbyists on K Street than he does for the hard-working families on Main Street."
Dave is right, of course, as witnessed by the nexus of King's legal bribes from one Big Business after another and the votes he freely gives for their special interests in return. But King forgot where he came from long before he became a congressman. Growing up the son of working class Democrats in Queens, King couldn't wait to abandon his family and re-invent himself-- as a pretentious right-wing phony. He worked for Nixon... and it's been all downhill ever since, supporting extremist Republicans' attempts to privatize abolish Social Security while always voting against raising the minimum wage for working people (while enthusiastically and selfishly voting to raise his own pay).
That raising his own pay chapter in King's disgraceful career contrasts markedly with Dave Mejias, who made quite a name for himself -- both inside and outside the County Legislature -- by being the only one of the nineteen legislators to oppose a salary increase for themselves. Nice -- but it gets better. Tough odds, right? But odds don't make a leader back away and Dave didn't -- and he won! 19-1 and he won. He didn't win a popularity contest in the legislature (or in his own party) but he shamed enough of them into changing their positions that the fat pay raise didn't pass.
The best place to find out how completely unsuited King is to represent a moderate district like NY-03 is at the Peter King Watch blog. They've got it all.
But what got me really excited about Dave was a dairy he wrote himself last month at Daily Kos. I found his personal story compelling and inspirational. A first-generation American, his dad was a political refugee from Cuba, where he was imprisoned for opposing Castro. But unlike so many children of Cuban refugees, Dave turned out thoroughly committed to progressive values and ideals.
A lot had to do with the visceral assistance his family got from Social Security, New York's sterling public higher education system-- like me, he's a SUNY grad-- and the help his family got from his mom's labor union after his dad passed away when he was still a kid. He told me he's running for Congress because he believes in "the power of the American Dream. I've lived it."
And Dave is a firm believer in Town Meetings. He's held more than 50 of them since he was elected to the County legislature.
"Usually there's a theme-- property taxes, Medicare Part D, SuperFund sights... people want to know how to cope with real problems... There are a lot of issues the people here are concerned about but many are struggling to make ends meet and are looking at a government that doesn't care about them or their problems. People are working harder and having a tougher time."
The NY-03 is ripe for new congressional leadership. A brand new Cooper & Secrest poll of the district shows that 65% think America is on the wrong track and 56% say that "this part of Long Island" is on the wrong track. The generic congressional preference in the district is 46% Democrat/33% Republican. 56% of those polled agreed with this statement: "We need to elect a Democrat to Congress to act as a balance to the Bush Administration's programs and policies. (31% agreed with the opposite: "We need to elect a Republican to Congress to support the programs and policies of President Bush.") King had famously said about Bush that he "thanks God every night that he is our president. The district gives Bush a job approval/disapproval rating of 30%/70%.
It appears to me that if Dave can get his message out, NY-03 is very likely to go blue. (Gore beat Bush by 5% in 2000 and Spitzer is building a solid 3-1 majority.) This is going to be a good Democratic year. Please consider giving Dave a hand at our Blue America ActBlue page. The first dozen donors get a copy of George Lakoff's brilliant new book WHOSE FREEDOM? THE BATTLE OVER AMERICA'S MOST IMPORTANT IDEA.

Thanks so much, Howie, for the great introduction to Dave. Welcome to FDL, Dave — looking forward to the chat.
Since Dave was kind enough to join us here today, please keep the conversation on topic in this thread. If you have something off topic that you’d like to discuss, please use the prior thread. Thanks!
Howie!
If you haven’t checked out Dave’s website, you really should. It’s very well done. :)
Hi Howie,
John here from www.kingwatch.blogspot.com.
And if anyone wants to experience in person what a complete kook Peter King is, Crooks and Liars has a Fox TV clip up showing him spew and froth about prosecuting the NY Times for treason and for “giving Fidel Castro his job.” King’s beyond just a typical garden variety rubber stamp turd. He’s lost his marbles.
Hi John — welcome. :)
Hi everyone. It’s great to be here, and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.
Hey, everybody, John’s blog (#4) has done the real yeoman’s work on holding King’s feet to the fire. King Watch is a model of what an independent congressional district blog should be all about. It’s an inspiration.
Great introduction Howie.
I was very glad to find out that Dave was challenging Peter King. King’s brand of extremism can more normally be found in places like the Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage shows. King’s eliminationist attitudes towards any criticism of the president in the media are down-right dangerous.
Welcome to Firedoglake and Blue America, Dave!
Welcome Dave - it’s great to have you at FDL!
What issues do you find resonating with voters the most? local or national?
Hi Dave! Thank you for being here - is Belle Harbor/Rockaway Beach part of your district? (If so I am going to get my Mom to come read this when she gets home later - I think some of my relatives are still in that area)
I’d add that John’s ActBlue page was the first place Dave used to receive donations online.
Dave, I hadn’t seen the video when I spoke to you– the one where King goes on about the NY Times giving Castro his job in Cuba. In light of your own personal history, what do you make of that rant?
siun @ 11
That George Bush and his Republican cronies in Congress have forgotten about the hard working people of this country. They’re more interested in doing the bidding of big oil, corporate special interests and millionaires than fighting for the forgotten middle class.
John Rennhack @ 4

astralplame @ 12
Sadly, no.
Thanks, Dave Mejias. Howie and Christy have given a great intro to you. Do you think that various races will affect one another (eg: will Lamont in CT affect your race), or will it be really local? Is national attention good for these races? And best of luck to you–and us.
Howie Klein @ 14
It’s a perfect example of how out of touch he is, and how he’s become an extreme ideologue.
Hello, Dave!
What strategies do you think would help join on-line political communities to local political campaigns?
More specifically, if you like — what do you think worked well and what did not in the cooperation between Lamont and the e-citizens who supported him?
Good luck!!
Ga @ 18
The Lamont race clearly showed that voters are upset with the status quo. Locally and nationally, the Republican party is demoralized, disorganized and clueless. And in New York, having Democratic candidates at the top of the ticket could provide the perfect storm
Mr. Mejias:
You mention K Street and Peter King’s employers, the lobbyists. Do you have a view on public financing of elections?
Hi Dave. I live in Oregon so I am not familiar with your district. How did it vote in the last Presidential election. For Bush or for Kerry?
Hello Mr. Mejias, and welcome! I have questions.
One, what do voters tell you about their concerns? How would you rank their concerns?
Two, has your opponent agreed to debates, and have local media agreed to sponsor them?
Third, how do you pronounce your last name?
Thanks for standing up to Peter King, who has ill-served his district, state, and nation. Best of luck in your campaign to unseat him, and see you in DeeCee in January for the BlueAmerica Swearing-In Bash!

PS Thanks Howie!
Cynical Optimist @ 20
The strength of support, both in the number of donors and the amount of money raised via the internet, showcased the strength of the blogging community and the need to change the status quo.
HI dave Welcome, I’m interested in the demographics in your district. As an old lady myself I know that SS and that damn drug bill resonates with us. Many people will start hitting the “donut hole” in the next few months so it might help to start hitting that subject.
Patrick Kennedy @ 23
Bush won the district by a razor thin margin in 2004, but Gore won the district handily in 2000.
King was nice enough to call Lamont voters “bigots”
I saw Peter King last night on Scarborough(R-secretary discovered murdered in his office). Mr. King and Scarborough had a good old time beating the ol’ terrism horse and spewing hard right wing propaganda. Giving King the old heave-ho and replacing him with a progressive representative would be a double win.
Thanks, Mr Klein, for the intro, and thanks to you, Mt Mejias, for taking time to visit here.
I like the sound of that “perfect storm.” And while the Republicans are busy tearing themselves apart, it’s refreshing to see that we have grownups with a positive agenda, stepping up to fill the vacuum. I suspect you’re as tired of the negativity, fearmongering, and corruption, as most of us FDLers are.
That’s soooo worth a contribution or two.
Welcome, Dave, and oh-so-welcome back, Howie!
With a gun to my head, I’d have to call our Saturday afternoons with Blue America Howie THE most important thing going at FDL. They’re where everything else we do here all week (our sharing of news, analysis, creativity, community and snark) most clearly, effectively converges to do and mean business.
Dave, you can’t not have fun here, so please enjoy your visit and never again be a stranger.
Most of all, Godspeed against your UNworthy opponent!
Dave,
I grew up in Queens at the border of Long Island during Peter King’s tenure and I’ve always wondered why no one has made an issue of his steadfast support of the IRA (terrorist) as they were blowing up British soldiers and civilians. Will you raise this as an issue?
- F
TeddySanFran @ 24
First, the people of the district are concerned that their government doesn’t fight for them anymore. They are working harder and barely making ends meet. Every time they fill up their gas tank they are reminded that the Republican leadership in Washington has sold them out.
Second, we plan to challenge King to a series of debates. Some local media have expressed interest in holding the debates.
Third, my name is pronounced Ma-HEE-us. Thanks for asking.
How secure is the voting mechanism in your district, and what can you tell us about your day-to-day or door-to-door campaign?
(blushes)
Er, that’s Mr Mejias, not “Mt.”
lotus @ 31
I’m having a lot of fun here today, thanks for having me, and thanks for your support!
Hi Howie & Everyone
David sounds like a really great candidate. I hope you’ll consider doing a Blue America thread on Bryan Kennedy here is his website- http://www.bryankennedyforcongress.org/
His republican opponent is James Sensenbrenner, the head of the House Judiciary committee who took his gavel & shut down the committee when he didn’t like what he was hearing from the witnesses. Thank you
ralps
Ga @ 34
Thus far, New York is not in compliance with HAVA. We’re still using the same machines we’ve been using for the last 40 years.
We’ve already kicked off our grassroots door to door campaign - effective, face to face voter contact is what will put us over the edge on Election Day. And I’m happy to say that we’re getting a tremendous response at the doors. People are ready for change, and we will let them know about Peter King’s record of supporting the failed policies of George Bush - the record King doesn’t want them to know about!
Thanks for answering my questions, sir!
Are you familiar with Larry Kissell’s $1.22 gas stunt? He garnered a lot of local media attention, plus CNN, for making up the difference between a fill-up now and a fill-up when his opponent took office. Generated a lot of goodwill and huge amounts of local publicity, radio and press as well as web. It’s something to consider, focusing the laser on your opponent’s culpability for the increase and the tax breaks the cabal has given their buddies.
Welcome dave!!
When you debate that rethug King you must hammer him on fear mongering. Let him know we aren’t scared of any terrists. Let him be the one afraid, of the people’s ire at the way our country has been defiled.
Good luck and god bless!!
PS Larry’s running in NC. Howie can certainly get you in touch with his campaign if need be.
Dave Mejias @ 27
Here is the only question I can think of that really matters…EVote MUCH???
If you can’t stop them from stealing the election http://www.whatreallyhappened......fraud.html
…does it really matter what you can do for your district?
David,
So glad to see an emerging challenger to Peter King. He is the last Republican in the House on Long Island, I think. What have you learned from Tim Bishop’s (NY-1) recent victories? He also represents a majority Republican area but is an outstanding, widely respected congressman. Has he leant a hand to your campaign?
TeddySanFran @ 39
Thanks for the suggestion. King’s record of supporting big oil is legendary. Not only did he vote against cracking down on price gouging, but he also voted to exempt big oil from liability for MTBE, which is poisoning our water.
King has utter disdain for his constituents especially if they don’t agree with his world view.
Here are some recent examples…King has utter disdain for his constituents especially if they don’t agree with his world view.
Mr. Mejias,
You are the first Cuban-American that I have heard of that is a democrat (let alone a progressive democrat). I live in Central Florida and I have not met any Cuban-Americans who are not republicans. I am happy to learn about you. I read “Cuba Confidential” by Ann Louise Bardach. In it, she explains in some detail about the special political relationships between Cuban-Americans and republican hard liners (including the Bush family, Ros Litenen, Diaz Balarts) and Castro.
She really presents quite an eye opening expose. Have you read this book and could you please share your perspective on this intriguing, powerful and important dynamic?
Dave, how are folks in your district responding to this week’s news from London, and what are you telling them about it (and related issues)?
Welcome, Dave. At last, a chance to get rid of Peter King. He’s been a thorn in the side of progressive politics since he first blustered his way into office here. Enough of his kind, already!
Good luck to you and thanks to Howie and Christy for this fine introduction to you.
Hey Dave…
Kudos for getting into this race. It’s great to hear of your fight for honesty and sanity for NY 03.
Eliot Spitzer seems to really be ahead in his race for Gov. Any plans for him to campaign with you?
How best for all of us non-residents to help out?
Dave - Are you in touch with any Long Island bloggers besides John? Is there a local blogging community there? One of the reasons Ned Lamont has found success as a candidate is through his close dialogue with a number of local bloggers.
Molee @ 43
Tim Bishop’s upset win in 2002 showed that Long Island continues to trend Democratic, and that hard work and dedication combined with the right message can defeat an incumbent. He has been tremendously supportive to my campaign, and he is a constant inspiration to me.
On Long Island, every contested race in the last 5 years has been won by a Democrat, including the defeat of a 31 year incumbent District Attorney in Nassau County.
I have experience winning in Republican districts, just like Tim Bishop. My county Legislative district is 2 to 1 Republican, yet I have won election there twice (despite being outspent 3 to 1 last year).
Plano tex (#46), don’t forget NJ Senator Menendez. And among young Cuban-Americans in Florida, plenty are turning away from the dark path. One of my friends is head of People For the American Way in Miami and he’s Cuban-American too.
For someone who has been in congress for 14 years and styles himself as a worldly fellow, he is fairly clueless about most everything.
Here are some examples
Plano tex @ 46
I have not read the book, but I would welcome your thoughts on it. Please feel free to email me at dave@daveforamerica.com.
Greetings from a former New Yorker.
Be extremely wary of the “mainstream” media Mr. Mejias. Creeps like Joe Klein will cozy up to you for quotes then write pieces tearing you limb from limb.
Forewarned is forearmed. So when they come after you (and you know they will) be prepared to FIGHT BACK!!!
I like your email address, “daveforamerica,” certainly has a better direction to it than “connecticut for lieberman.” thanks.
Hi Dave, welcome. When I see Peter King on TV nationally, he seems to enjoy wrapping himself in the mantle of 9/11, and portraying himself as a tireless fighter for terra-fighting earmarks for his district. What is his true record in that regard?
John Rennhack @ 53
If you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely check out John’s site: http://kingwatch.blogspot.com. John, you’ve been working hard to defeat Peter King, and I really appreciate all the effort!
I just got in! I want to read the whole thread, but just say first: Thank you, David, for running against King. I’ll go put some money in the till and then come back.
And thanks, Howie, for doing this. It’s just fabulous that you do all the work of finding these great candidates so we can do something! All our little somethings add up.
Matt Browner-Hamlin @ 50
There are very few active bloggers on Long Island doing politics.
From the republican side a few young republicans have started and let die some anti-suozzi sites.
A former pres. of the young republicans started a faux-populist group before last years election, endorsed republican candidates, proclaimed “we are watching out for you” and then the site has bee dormant since december.
www.communityalliance.blogspot.com is a group out of the Town of Hempstead and I also run www.nassaugopwatch.blogspot.com and www.schmittwatch.blogspot.com about my legislator who I ran against in 2003.
op99 @ 57
Peter King is a hypocrite on many issues, none more so than homeland security, On his watch, New York’s homeland security funding was cut 40%! He opposed the creation of the 9-11 commission. He voted to cut the urban areas security grant. And there are many, many other votes that are inconsistent with his stated position.
The truth is that his rhetoric does not match his record.
Dave Mejias @ 58
Thanks Dave,
I’ve been riding King for years and put the website together in late 2003.
Dave needs to win because we in the the 3rd CD are not represented in congress.
King does not work for the district. Dave has a track record in the nassau legislature of being responsive to his constituents.
And on a purely personal level, Dave has to win so I don’t have to declare for 2008 and have my wife gut me with a dull spoon. :)
John Rennhack @ 62
Thanks John. I’d hate to see your twins without a father, so I have extra incentive to win.
Mr. Meijas, welcome!
Any thoughts on my issue, health care for all?
Shout-out to John Rennbeck! What a great website, and such fertile ground Congressman King provides. I had an instinct this guy King was a doofus, having seen him on the teevee. But my goodness: King’s letters to constituents, King’s “Don’t know much about….”, and his actual voting record! Shameful….
Clearly, NY-03 deserves much better, as do we all! THANKS, Mr. Mejias, for your effort. My money’s on you (literally!)
===================
Had Enough, New York CD03?
===================
Dave, I think you missed it, but I’m really interested in your answers to the questions at 47 ^ , i.e., how are folks in your district responding to this week’s news from London, and what are you telling them about it (and related issues)?
King’s been very popular with Irish-American voters who are active and involved in the Good Friday Agreement peace process, testifying to Congress, etc. Talk to Irish American Unity Conference representatives, and get yourself a good education on those issues from groups like Ancient Order of Hibernians, just to inform yourself on those issue, if you haven’t already. King was always very supportive of Irish nationalists in the North of Ireland. But, his behavior and comments are unconscionable, and King must go. He’s become a despicable demogogue.
Okay, Mr Mejias, I ACTed a little bit of BLUE. Best wishes.
Margot @ 64
I’m running for Congress on behalf of the 45 million Americans without health care. Republicans in Congress are not talking about expanding access to health care, because they are too busy cozying up to insurance and drug companies. We need leadership in Congress who will stand up for families and work toward health care for all Americans. I own a business, and I pay for 100% of the health care for my employees.
Am so glad to be able to come and read about progressive candidates! Very special, and many thanks. I am VERY impressed with Mr. Mejias, and am sorry that he’s not running in my state (does ANYONE think that we will EVER be blessed with a progressive candidate in NC???). Anyway, best of luck to you. p.s. LOVE ‘perfect storm’!
Tennessean @ 67
King has been on the outs with the Irish community over the immigration bill.
He even snubbed an Irish-American delegation that went to DC to meet with members of congress.
King is above all else an opportunist.
He sees immigration as a wedge issue and will try to exploit it.
After the election he would swing back return to his legalize the irish stance.
lotus @ 66
You’re right, I did miss it. Thanks for asking again.
This week’s arrests in London highlight that America is still vulnerable. Five years after 9-11, we still have not implemented ALL the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission. Security at our ports and borders remains inadequate. Osama Bin Laden still remains at large. There is a global nuclear threat. And the United States is bogged down in the war in Iraq with no end in sight. Clearly, the status quo needs to go.
Hi Dave, Welcome, I asked a couple of questions at #26. As a senior I am interested in your demographics and if you think that discussing SS and the damn drug bill will resonate with your constituents. Thanks.
I’ve known Dave for 3 years. I met him when he was running for the nassau county legislature in the adjacent district to mine.
King should beware that dave is an excellent orator, knows his facts and can rebut the BS King will spout.
Dave laid waste to two consecutive republican opponents, both of whom were very well -known in the district, one having a building with his name on it and a road with his families name.
Did i mention the district is 2-1 republican and Dave was attacked by outside groups?
Mr. Mejias, to what do you attribute Peter King’s success in the district? I believe it is important to understand your opponent’s strengths (as well as weaknesses) in order to craft a successful campaign to defeat him.
Is King’s constituent service above average?
Is he a guy you’d wanna have a beer with?
Is his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee something constituents are proud of?
Simply put, to what do you attribute his success?
oh, and another question, how many terms has King served?
Kewalo @ 74
Absolutely. Before I decided to run for Congress, as a Legislator, I had numerous town hall meetings on Medicare Part D because it’s so confusing and expensive for seniors, and they needed help.
Peter King was the deciding vote on the Medicare Part D “reforms”, and has been a strong supporter of George Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security. Last year, when a group of activists held a town hall meeting on the subject, Peter King refused to show up. He called them “partisan hitmen” and “wacko malcontents” and in typical Republican fashion, questioned their patriotism. I will make sure that the people understand that Peter King cares more about special interests than seniors.
Kewalo @ 74
King doesn’t want to discuss SS with is constituents, He was invited to a townhall meeting but declined and called participants names.
Yeah, there’s an idea: Can we just call it “the damn drug bill” instead of “Medicare Part D?” Its victims will know whereof we speak, and that we are on THEIR side!
Dave, thanks for your answer to the second part of my question.
We were all wondering, before you arrived, however, how (and how many) “non-blogged” Americans are swallowing the 24/7 fear-mongering of BushCo and the corporate media. So the first part of my question is of great interest to all of us here.
What are your antennae picking up from your constituents-to-be, and how do/will you help them understand your specific plans to make us all safer?
(I’m badgering my witness here with the best of will, because you candidates really need to present solid, persuasive answers on these issues — and frankly, yours is still a mite fuzzy. I’m trying to help you hone a better one. ;-} )
Dave Mejias:
How do we stop the whole K Street thing? I mean it seems to be the root cause of a lot of New York’s and the rest of America’s problems with getting and keeping good, honest folks in government. Whether I receive an answer or not, good luck against King!
TeddySanFran @ 76
King is in his seventh term in office.
His success was due in large part to a strong Republican machine which no longer exists on Long Island. In order to secure a leadership position, he has had to move to the far right of his party. This is clearly out of touch with the people of the 3rd CD as it exists today. Long Island was once the home to two of the nation’s strongest Republican machines. Today, both counties have Democratic County Executives, Democratically controlled legislatures, and Democratic District Attorneys. Sharply increased Democratic performance in the district, an historic performance for Democrats at the top of the ticket and an overwhelming disaffection for the Republican leadership in Washington are not just a perfect storm, but a potential tsunami. In addition, the local press have covered King’s rudeness and arrogance toward his constituents. Also, I am a battle tested candidate who has had three tough campaigns in a row. Peter King has not had a serious challenge since he was first elected to Congress.
wow, that was thorough! thanks, Mr. Mejias.
TeddySanFran @ 79
LOL Teddy, I just can’t call it anything else. I haven’t signed up for it since that might be construed as approval.
Thanks for answering my question Dave and good luck, we are all rooting for you.
John, I’ve bookmarked your site and will keep checking in to see how Dave is doing. Thanks for being our “boots” on the ground.
I’m a resident of nassau…I will try to contribute to this mans compaign
I do want to repeat Dave Mejias what I wanted to tell to feingold
we need to approach the spin republicans use completely differantly then we have been doing
for instance, when 9/11 is brought up as if it has anything to do with Iraq, when fighting terrorism is brought up as if it EVER had anything to do with Iraq, we need to respond with the kind of energy that shows leadership and ability to secure our safety…like;
things like;
this administration has brought ruin to our national security, it’s decisions are irresponsible, inept and dangerous
they take their weakest liability and try to convince the public that it’s an asset of theirs.
the decisions of this administration have created more terrorism and weakened our military and we need to bring experts in to office that will rebuild our armed forces and that will have a plan that will reduce instead of increase terrorism”
Mr. Mejias, do the demographics of NY-03 favor a focus on the damn drug bill? Folks my age are struggling to help our aged parents with it, so I’m not sure whether the demographics need to dictate the focus — everyone seems to be waking up to its criminality, or will when the donut hole strikes this fall.
Are there any “special issues” to specifically motivate NY-03 voters that we haven’t yet discussed?
lotus @ 80
Earlier, we discussed Peter King’s failures on homeland security. In the 3rd CD, local property taxes are the highest in the nation. Regular people cant make ends meet anymore. Every day they fill up their gas tanks they are reminded of the failures of the Bush administration. Peter King has taken tens of thousands of dollars in contributions from big oil, then voted to let them get away with price gouging. Peter King voted to make their medicine more expensive. You know what scares people? That they cant pay their bills, because Republicans are more interested in enriching special interests than they are in helping regular working people.
amen
Kewalo @ 84
Thanks.
Check out the archives.. I’ve documented years worth of Kings follies. The more you read the sadder it is.
TeddySanFran @ 86
The Medicare Part D “reforms” are certainly an issue, and our campaign strategy will become very clear to Peter King in the next few weeks. :)
This
says it all. Excellent statement.
I’m pretty new hyere myself (and nobody welcomed me?!?, maybe because i’m a nobody) but welcome Dave. If I were living in that district, I’d vote for you (I live in Zoe Lofgren’s district).
Let’s take it to those republican bastards and throw ALL the bums out (along with the newest Republican, Joe Lieberman).
Oh, look who Congressman Charles Taylor (R-NC) is running against: MY congresswoman, not Heath Schuler! I post this link, since this will surely be a GOP issue against you as well, sir: the prospect of Speaker Pelosi!
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/arti.....202D07.DTL
Ha! GPB, I’m pretty new here too, and nobody is more of a nobody than I am — but welcome!
TeddySanFran @ 93
TeddySanFran, right. At this link {pdf!}you can read a fundraising letter by John Doolittle that had to have been written by Karl Rove. I’ll bet it comes from a Republican template — it’s got all the fearmongering words in it!
Hi - you have gotten some very good advance press here at this site!
Keep NY safe for us all and do good things for New Yorkers. It doesn’t hurt to mention that, along with the self evident disasters of not catching bin Laden and not implementing port security for five years, there has been a rush of military candidates to the Democratic party because not only is this President a FAILURE as Commander in Chief, the Republican Party is a FAILURE in its duties to the military.
Not safe on terrorism and crime (which is growing as programs are defunded while tax breaks go to hugely profitable energy companies) and also very scarey bad on the military - supporting, directing and protecting it - so that it can protect America.
