Morning gang. Woke up late. Just making coffee.
See we've had a foiled terrorist plot overnight in Britain. Glad Scotland Yard was on the case...and what a coincidence it was foiled just as Lieberbush lost the election. Thank goodness for good police work.
Crooks and Liars has an hilarious Daily Show bit on the Connecticut Senate race. It's a must see.
So, as I wait for my first cuppa coffee, what's caught your eyes in the news this morning? Do you have a link?

Christy!
Ned!!
Ahhh…A foiled “terraist” plot immediately after the antiwar candidate wins. I’m surprised they broke it out so soon. I figured they would at least wait until October.
In a side note, I wonder if our red alert is more of a pink alert due to the amount of dust that has gathered on the homeland security chart due to lack of use….
jus’ sayin’
Good Morning. Off the canvass for my favorite local politician. Have to get an early start before the heat grows to thick for words.
Hi Christy, don’t I love seeing that “an” before historical!! Now to see the clip……..
So far today, just watching the terror plot deal on CNN and catching up on all the work that I didn’t get done over the last two days due to Lamont and FDL ;)
Top o’ the mornin’ to you too!
I found this interesting: Is Joe Lieberman a Bad Jew?
I’m still perturbed about the Bush administration’s proposed changes to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect those who authorized “humiliating and degrading treatment” of detainees (I think this is normally known as “torture”).
Am sick to death of these people acting like criminals and then trying to change the laws to save themselves from prosecution when the rest of the country finds out what they were up to.
Am feeling cranky this morning - sorry. Not a coffee drinker, so that won’t help.
Nothing has caught my eye this morning. But let me tell you how boring my cubicle is after roaming around the country side for four days. Drat!
I usually lurk but I wanted to say something today. Is it totally cynical of me that the first thing I thought of when I heard this on the radio this morning was: “How convenient for Bush and Lieberman?” I just can’t believe the timing! I live in Connecticut but I didn’t do enough for Ned’s campaign, just donated money and did a little phone banking via MoveOn. My Dad had a heart attack 2 weeks ago and I couldn’t do more at the time. But, he’s much better now, and my hubbie and I both have decided we are going to do whatever it takes to help Ned win in November. My 11 year old daughter wants to go canvessing with us, she says she is going to bring her video camera along and she needs me to buy her some editing software! My little blogger, I’m so proud.
here’s stewart interviewing brian williams
How the heck are we supposed to travel with small children without bringing beverages on board?
Does that mean I have to pour my bottled water over my shoes prior to boarding?
Let me promote my own photos from the Lamont camapaign:
Victory celebration in Meriden
Pictures from the Hartford area on the campaign trail
The only thing left I want to see is public pressure brought to bear on Lieberman to drop out.
Josh Marshall has a nice takedown of the Time Magazine piece that just regurgitated the Rovian response to the Lamont victory — that the Republicans are overjoyed because now they can accuse the Dems of being weak on security. It probably took a bit of courage on Josh’s part to slam Time Magazine because he just had a piece in Time a couple of days ago on the CT election. So he apparently is now a guest columnist for Time. In a way too bad. I would rather see him not get anywhere near the big media. But, the man has a right to earn his livelihood.

On the Daily Show Jon was great, but so was Samantha Bee. She said if Joe loses the general election he will start his own Senate.
I agree! How very con-veeenient that a terror plot should be “foiled” just after a major primary, acting as a referendum on the failed Iraq war!! Hmmm…
It’s a pattern we’ve seen before; however, the MSM is gobbling up everything the republican spin machine tosses at them. I have yet to hear or read one single journalist question the timing of this event.
Hey it ate my comments.
I asked how are we supposed to travel with youngin’s if we can’t bring beverages on board?
Yesterday on NPR David Brooks spoke of the emergence of a new McCain-Lieberman Party that will appeal to moderates who are fed up of the extremists on both the right and the left. I understand that Mayor Bloomberg is joining this party and will be campaigning for Lieberman in Connecticut. Maybe for simplicity they could call it the NeoCon Party.
Morning! Anybody who hasn’t caught http://www.firedoglake.com/200.....it-matters yet — all I can tell ya is that it may be the single most stunning moment in FDL history to date.
TRex tells a story - then Rayne and Fini and others bring similar stories, achingly told - then Hope brings news you won’t believe - then the whole crowd jumps in to DO SOMETHING.
I’m telling you, you won’t believe your eyes.
over at atrios, theres a screen shot , which watertiger researched. it has a photoshopped visual of Howard Dean with a mustache ala Hitler.
The GOP are ratbastards, frm bottom to top.
I’m wondering when sectarian violence begins in the USA? I wonder who would be called insurgents?
There is no patrotism in the GOP only lies
Currently reading about Castro as a Conservationist. Intersting piece. I wonder what will happen to Cuba once the dictator veil falls completely and foaming-at-the-mouth developers swarm down upon the island.
what a coincidence it was foiled just as Lieberbush lost the election.
If that was the motivation, wouldn’t it make more sense to do it before the election, to have an effect on it?

I just heard back from the owner of SoreLoserman.com — she said she’d sell it for a million dollars — I guess I will have to put up a giant PayPal button! or get Ned to spring for it…
Nevertheless, I do own www.SoreLooserman.com and www.Sore-Loserman.com
Lieberfolk gettin up early these days. Thought all the paid staff got laid off.
As for security at Heathrow, as of 36 hours ago there wasn’t a whiff of anything tense. I’ve seen more uptight paranoia in small town airports in the midwest. If there was REALLY a possible red alert security issue, don’t you think they might have nudged Heathrow to tweak it up a little? Things that make you go hmmm.
Yep,
Last time we had a rainbow alert was right before the 2004 election. Funny that. I suppose we will have lots of these before Nov.
Just made a hotel reservation in Meriden for Sun-Wed on that fateful week in Nov. Hope I get to use it (gotta talk the board into letting me go back and work on the final stretch).
The Republicans were always going to portray the Democrats as weak on security anyway. Even if Lieberman would have won. The R’s have worked overtime to portray the D’s as cowards. If they keep us busy with the “no, we’re not” track nobody will ask why they keep sending our people to be killed and maimed so little Georgie won’t have to be embarrassed by admitting he lied to get us into a war. Or admitting that he’s completely destroyed one country and has made significant inroads into destroying America.
Constantine @ 11
Love the pics! One question. Did Maxine really do all that campaigning on her feet in those shoes?
NPR featured about a 20 minute Wurlitzer solo this AM re: the foiled plot. Lots of self-congratulatory love from Chertoff et al.
The TSA has taken the bold step of not allowing liquids in carry-on baggage anymore. Often wondered how they differentiated between a flask of Vodka and a flask of Nitro-Glycerin, so probably an wise if overdue change.
BTW, the alert levels have been raised. I know how shocked you all must be.
jb
The Terror Alert and politics — it was Monday that Ken Mehlman gave a big speech about the fall strategy will be painting Democrats as soft on defense and terrorism. Rove has stated so too. Tony Snow went off on a “Democrats soft on terrorism” riff in his first presser after Lieberman lost.
Very suspicious …
Good morning, coolios. Christy, so glad to hear you’ve slept in. Me, too!
Thank goodness it was Scotland Yard.
Are we safer today? Getting all those terrorists killed, George?
This is what we are all about - The Death of Triangulation:

Heathrow 36 hours ago, I was in terminal 1, which connects to scary places, and terminal 4, which connects to the United States. Absolutely nothing happening. Loose and relaxed. No double checking. No extra guards.
Does anyone know what time Donita is going to be on KXLU today?
On this one, I don’t question the timing, especially as the whole alert started with the UK’s Scotland Yard, not US Homeland Security. If Michael Chertoff had been the one to announce this to the world, then I would have been more dubious. Given the opinions in the UK toward the Bush administration, I can’t imagine Blair & Co. agreeing to any kind of “let’s round up some folks, call them terrorists, and crank up airline security all to make Dubya look good” kind of plot.
Gotta go check out more UK papers . . .

oh lucky us, later today, chimpy will be commenting on the foiled terrorist plot
Actually, this is an opportunity to start working on the message to separate Iraq from terrorism. This one looks real to me–it’s not some loon with a blowtorch planning to take the Brooklyn Bridge or some poor sap who got entrapped into a money laundering deal.
So we should be pleased that British intelligence penetrated this plot, and believe that American resources should be directed away from the war in Iraq and to finding and stopping actual terrorist plots.
Y’all don’t be getting too oooy-&-wowy over “Scotland Yard,” okay? If you’ve followed the Britpress for a few years, you’ll share the unhappy realization that Blighty’s coppers are every bit as incompetent as our numskulls. We just like their accents better, ’sall.
Maybe Will can check in with us today, with his Thames-side view. I hope so . . .

I heard a report yesterday that when Castro dies, the US has a large contingent of official government people who will swarm in immediately to “help” the surviving government [read puppet] set up a thriving “democracy.” Colonialism much?
I watched the news conference from Scotland Yard on the BBC this morning . . . I was struck by the pains the British took to avoid the usual race-baiting and scare-mongering that that happens in the US. They referred to the Muslim community in Britain as their allies in fighting terrorism. What a difference from the way things happen here. Then they cut to the smug, self-congratulatory Chertoff in the US. How lucky for him that Scotland Yard is actually doing their job and he can stand in front of the cameras and take credit for it.

Throw in some wealthy Miami expats and you’re good to go.
With ever-so-slight apologies, I’m gonna re-post a rant I tossed OT into an earlier thread after watching very disturbing broadcast on C-Span yesterday (upsetting to me anyway - hopelessly smitten by environmental issues).

It wasn’t the panel presentations, it was the Q&A afterwards that made [Bryza, Matthew J. Deputy Assistant Secretary, Department of State, European & Eurasian Affairs] squirm like a live fish on a griddle. Others on panel were
[Verrastro, Frank, Director, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Energy Program] & [Nanay, Julia, Senior Director, PFC Energy, Russia and Caspian Service]
IMHO, EVERYONE on the panel was extremely uncomfortable at this ‘under-the-radar-appearance,’ folks.
Body-language-message: BP pipeline problem in AK is not only inexcusable & indefensible, but viewed by experts as catastrophic in its repercussions.
Maybe I’ve unintentionally exaggerated.
On the other hand, panel mbrs seemed in agreement re:
#1)EXTENSIVE corrosion problems in HUGE (main? all?) pipeline(s) serving biggest oilfield in the world (Prudhoe Bay North Slope AK) (scope of problem as yet not completely revealed)
#2)DECADES of lax control measures (e.g., NEVER checking pipelines for corrosion, NEVER even taking measures now required elsewhere for controlling corrosion,
#3)NEVER reporting problems or possibilities thereof before,
#4 ad infinitum) ????????????????
…….
Not too great leap on my part, since admitted by panel mbrs:
Problems developed to this point BECAUSE all that measuring, checking, controlling & reporting has NOT been REQUIRED by law, but simply voluntary. Therefore, BP, not being required to do anything, … didn’t.
[unless you count millions spent for ads assuring us how “green” they are]
This is how I understood the Q&A & the visibly squirming ‘experts’ called upon to answer the questions.
So, all you caribou, OOPS! Cross yer legs & trot to the nearest breeding ground to the, uh, dang, where’s my compass!*&$!
Wading, diving & swimming birds: DON’T! till further notice (we’ll get back to you on that…)
HEY, You assorted seals, polar bears, plovers, snowy owls, arctic foxes & hares, snow geese & tundra swans - OUTTA HERE! NOW! Leave the eggs, kits, peeps & whatall. WE need this area, NOW!
O.k., let’s get goin’ on this. Back those trucks on in here. There ya go-oo-ooo-ooooops!
Dang! Permafrost is supposed to be PERMA, RIGHT?! WHAAAT GLOBAL WARMING NONSENSE YOU TALKIN’ BOUT?! Send fer a heavier truck & back it up in the same spot!

p.s., ever wonder where one disposes of humpty-lebben-thousand miles of corroded pipeline so’s no one’s gonna notice? or who pays for the fuel for the transport for the disposal & replacement of the pipeline that the fuel’s supposed to travel thru to… oh gawd, my head hurts.
N.B.: that “our numskulls” refers to Mueller, Chertoff, and their ilk — NOT to the good folk out on the line every day!
I don’t doubt that the plot may very well be real. My question is, how long have they known about it? Timing is everything. Anyone volunteer to watch the Deciderer and Understanderer agitate and slur and mumble so we don’t have to. I swear, I’m in no mood for his BS smoke and mirrors today. Can’t you just see his jaw jutting back and forth and condescending sneering at us? OOOOOOOPPHHHH!

Good Morning Firedogs,
Christy - great to see you getting some sleep
goodness - as they began their GWOTAPALOOZA - one of the most oft repeated memes was that we libruls wanted to make it a ‘law enforcement issue’ - well screw me runnin’ but what the hell is this this morning, but yet another in an long line of terra plots uncovered by the law enforcement commnuity - aarrgghh! - gonna go get another cup and read Lotus’ link
and hear hear to lotus @ 39 - I seem to recall some poor brazilian being shot at point blank range in a tube station and nothing done about it
What next? Will there be the Al Qaeda “colostomy-bag bomb plot” that will be foiled by the Mike “Fifth Horseman” Chertoff and the DHS All Stars.
Notice that if this indeed a real matter that is was stopped by “police work” and not by a long bombing campaign, a lengthy occupation or threats to other nations.

I agree that it does look like there was some legitimate terrorist thingy goin’ on. But, I am in no way convinced it wasn’t used politically. The Brits may have been keeping tabs on some legitimate al qaeda and maybe even knew of their plot. They have already said that they didn’t know of a date that the attack was to go down. So, were the Brits on stand-by until the Chimpster gave them the go-ahead to make the bust? When the timing was politically right? They did say that Chimpy has known about the plot for a while.
dammit! somebody put LieberChow instead of pumpkin bread in the giant Hamster Wheel that powers the mighty FDL servers … no wonder things are so pokey this morning …

Here’s one that deserves another look (you had an item on this a couple months back):
http://donnaedwardsforcongress.com/
http://blog.washingtonpost.com...../wynn.html
Donna Edwards is running against Albert Wynn in the Democratic primary in an US House district that covers much of the eastern suburbs of DC in Maryland. Wynn has supported a series of Bush initiatives, including the Iraq War, the bankruptcy bill, the energy bill, the estate tax, and net neutrality. How can this guy still be representing a very liberal district? Donna Edwards is an intelligent, articulate, and progressive candidate who deserves a second look.
Am loading very slowly too.
Just read the article on the plot uncovered to blow up a number of transcontinental flights to the U.S. So…people are not going to be able to bring their laptops, cell phones or Ipods onto the airplane. And no water?

This whole terror alert thing just reeks of Republican desperation. Does anyone actually believe it? I know I don’t. Have I mentioned how much I love the smell of Republican desperation in the morning? :)
Interesting thing I saw at Rawstory, they’re hinting that the McCain/Lieberman thing may be picking up some steam. Yes I know it’s from Bobo, just hold your nose hehe. I still think a McCain/Lieberman presidential run is likely.
Sigh, tin foil hat time.
I’ve already emailed John @ Crooks & Liars about this, but maybe someone here would have noticed.
I switched to Faux (as I often do during the news) last nite to see what the cryptkeepers had to say about the CT election. I noticed in the crawl the “Terror Level Elevated” bit and said to my housemate, “Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that!! Figgers Faux would be the only one still doing it!”
Then I wake up to this.
Has Faux still been running that in the crawl all along, or did they stop and start it back up? Now I’m not a regular viewer, but I’ll pop over during commercials to see what the wackos are saying.(had to say that in self defense)
Terry in Maryland @ 55 - Have you voluntered for the Donna Edwards campaign? I’m going to volunter for her campaign. I’ve read her website and think she’s exactly what we need here in PG county.
Airlines are gonna sell blunts instead of liquor.
Terry in Maryland at 53 — take a peek at Howie’s post from yesterday (the Blue America update) — there’s a great update on Donna Edwards there.
How do we know Al Qaeda didn’t sabotage Joe Lieberpud’s website?

Short break, quick thought:
I understand the “Karl Rove directs all beings in the Universe” idea — buy I don’t see that here. And even if the timing was orchestrated, it will only benefit the Democrats. The Republican playbook is premised on the outdated notion that the people prefer the Republicans when it comes to security. That is no longer true. Every time one of these terror alerts goes up, people do not say, Thank God Chertoff is Homeland Security Director!” They say, “Shit, these guys in charge have no idea what is happening — we are less safe than we were on September 11th….” So all these scares really reinforce the “time for a change” attitudes which in turn help Democrats.
The Democratic response to this ought to be something like:
“We will not be safe in this country until the failed Chertoff is replaced.” Our troops do not stand a chance as long as the failed Rumsfeld is allowed to stay in office.”
Personalize it to the losers. The people will make the connection to Bush.
peace, out.
Woke to the Red Alert. Yeah, my cynicism radar is on red alert, too. Can just about cite what the Rove/Mehlman blast-fax to their bread-and-circuses lackeys says this morning.
soft on terror.
Well we need to speak up loud and strong. Dems, the netroots, ordinary Americans, are not soft on terror! False choice.
We are strong on demanding competence from the deciderers. Strong enough to demand accountability for stupid, self-serving, selfish mistakes made by Bush [or fronted by Bush]. Strong enough to clean house…starting with our own last Tuesday. And we will not stay silent any more.
I finally posted on windcatpond having 3 comments in a row dissolve into “error with connection to server”. I am grumpy and am going to take a break. If this comments goes through, all hail to the mice in the basement. My son who lost his wife is not doing well and I am going to have lunch with him.
Ahh, it’s good to sleep in. I think I may have finally caught up after the insane past coupla weeks…I’m still sleepily sipping my jasmine tea and poking round the web…
Anyway, the piece that has most jogged my mind so far this morning is entitled “The Sweetness of Lieberman’s Defeat” by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair on Counterpunch. I don’t necessarily agree with everything here, but many of their disturbing contrarian assertions are firmly rooted in fact.
Also, I was checking out this interview with Maxine Waters (given last month), via the awesome blog Negrophile, which is incidentally currently drawing attention to the 2006 Black Weblog Awards. Ya know, these are the kinds of links you don’t often run across in places like FDL and Kos…
Peace.

Hear hear to cbl, more like, for giving us http://windcatpond.blogspot.com to play in when the Big Lodge at the Lake is full-up!
But, yeah, that Brazilian kid … short recap:
“The Yard” gets so twitchy-fingered after the 7/7 bombings that when they surveille a block of flats linked to some of the 7/7 bombers and out walks the poor de Menezes kid on his way to work … they swarm after him and, as he takes his seat on the Tube, their “crack” sharpshooter team gathers round and unload on his face at pointblank range. Unfortunately, their guns are rawthah more functional than their intel.
BIG diplomatic steenk as the de Menezes family arrives from Brazil and with their government demand an inquiry. Sir Ian Blair (no relation), head of the Yard, is found to have, ahem, misspoken rather badly, etc., at the time and later. But last I heard (before my attention got deflected to Ned, Lebanon, et al.), Sir Ian’s still hanging onto his job with his fingernails.
Jane Tennison does not exist. Alas.
Nice one Imm. I totally agree, remind them that these idiots have totally failed us on security every time they bring it up.

Agree here too, the alleged fact that al qaeda can still organize and communicate and get massive plots together does not make me feel safer. We need to throw it in their face. We are creating more terrorists because we have become one of the most hated countries in the world.

And this is just fucking ridiculous. (pardon my French). I am sick to death of these idiots who are so afraid of terrorists that they want us to completely change our lives. At this rate, they’ll have us all cowering in our basements in the dark all day. It’s an outrage. GIVE ME MY DAMN COUNTRY BACK!!!
OT.
Ciro Rodriguez is running again. His district was redrawn and is slightly more Democractic than before.
Onto Deadeye Dick Cheney:
(Snip)
Cheney said that to “purge a man like Joe Lieberman” was “of concern, especially over the issue of Joe’s support with respect to national efforts in the global war on terror.” He explained:
The thing that’s partly disturbing about it is the fact that, the standpoint of our adversaries, if you will, in this conflict, and the al Qaeda types, they clearly are betting on the proposition that ultimately they can break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task.
(End)
Dick Cheney refers to a legitimate primary election as a “purge”. No wonder the nation is so shattered. The Vice President thinks that Iraq is a model democracy and that Connecticut is an authoritarian state that conducts Stalin/Pinochet style “purges”.
Can that man have any less of a conscience?
-GSD
Love the pics! One question. Did Maxine really do all that campaigning on her feet in those shoes?
She was indefatiguable. Here’s a picture of Maxine Waters in sensible shoes.
You know, on another note, towards the end of the evening, she walked into the media room and thanked all of the bloggers for their support. Good for her.
Anne 75 - so n theory, you could have to end up drinking some of your own breast milk. There has to be some other test they can do. Someone that is hell-bent on dying may not have any problem taking a drink of some chemical. As long as he/she can stay alive for a few more hours…
Oh. We had our own Miami airport incident. Returning from Central America, iirc.

Yep.
I take this alert seriously. I believe the arrests are in the pursuit of real security.
I also think the spin will be in. Comedian Rush, pro wrestler Hannity, the whole shill gang will have their talking points. Even the MSNBC reporter/anchor right now has already shown her neocon bias on past occasions.
Somebody noted last night how a media person can manipulate a straightforward answer in the discussion of J-Lie’s website “hacking” …innuendo. Leading questions. “Trust, but verify.” Good advice for these days. “Distrust, but verify” applies, too.
Sure does change the Sunday morning program planning, doesn’t it?
Oh, and McCain-Lieberman is a non-starter in my opinion. McCain’s a savvy politician…he won’t pick a 3-time loser. No matter how self-delusional that loserman may be this week.
These tooobz are super jammed. *ilson, I’m sending you some fresh hot pumpkin muffins Special D. Or maybe what we really do need is a big truck?

posting from london - i get on a UNITED flight return to JFK saturday. aside from the massive lines and the trouble of having to pack everything below (including this precious laptop), i actually feel safer flying during a time when Heathrow airport security is super- vigilant (as opposed to when gaurds are down). that said, i think the dems have a very good argument that the bush admin has chosen to take the fight offshores at the expense of protecting our homeland borders and ports. do we feel safer as a result of bush’s destructive, regressive policies - hell no.

Christy, you’ve been even more fascinating & delightful since you’ve been allowed to let go of fitz — his stuff is too close to your professional training, so it smothered your natural creativity
