Interesting how things develop overnight. I am of course talking about the “Joe2006 hack” story going around. I have had CNN on all day and they cover it about every 15 minutes or so. What is amazing is that a company like CNN hasn’t decided to dig into joe2006.com to see exactly what may be happening.
Markos has a post up, and his digging into this and explanation of it hits the nail right on the head:
Two posts down it's clear that Lieberman's website isn't suffering from a Denial of Service attack.
But now I have the definitive answer as to why Lieberman's site went down.
They are paying $15/month for hosting at a place called MyHostCamp, with a bandwidth limit of 10GB. MyHostCamp is currently down, along with all their clients.
Here's the deal -- you get what you pay for. My hosting bill is now over $7K per month. A smaller site doesn't need that much bandwidth, but if you're paying $15 because your $12 million campaign is too freakin' cheap to pay for quality hosting, then don't go blaming your opponent when your shitty service goes out.
For their part, the Lamont campaign has offered its technical expertise to get Lieberman's site back up (which could be done in an hour by a competent sysadmin), and has added a link to the googlecached version of Lieberman's site at the top of their blog.
For you FDL readers that have been around for a few months, you should be able to relate to what Markos is talking about. Since the move from Blogger, we are now on our third host and here is a little in depth look into that.
The first hosting company we went with was on a shared hosting account. This is the same thing that Joe has with MyHostCamp (a shared hosting account is exactly what it sounds like – numerous websites are hosted on a single server/computer). Numerous times throughout the day, we would go down. This was due to the number of hits coming in during a short amount of time. Every time a page is viewed, the server has to make thousands of calculations to process all that information and generate the page. This will have one of two possible end results; A). The processor overloads and the server shuts down or B) your account gets suspended for excessive processor usage. It is safe to say that Joe was hit by option B.
We then moved from there to another hosting company, where we had a dedicated server. This meant that the only site coming off of that server was FDL. Of course with the number of visitors this site receives, we were also overloading and at times shutting down. Again – this was from excessive processor usage.
Finally we moved to where we are now and have two separate servers hosting this site and everything is running much smoother. We still hit very busy times where the site is slow to load, but we are staying up 99% of the time now.
So what does this mean? Exactly what Markos said – you get what you paid for. Joe is using a shared hosting company that has 74 sites coming off of one computer. That has lead to his problems - not some vicious political attack. You would think CNN, MSNBC or FOX (well maybe not FOX) would have someone tech savvy enough to say “hey let’s call his hosting company”.
So what is Joe doing to prevent this? Well that is where the interesting part comes in. joe2006.com is now pointing to a new hosting company. That hosting company is GoDaddy and ironically the exact same server my own site use to be hosted on.
When I was on GoDaddy I averaged 500-1,000 hits a week. My site was constantly suspended due to excessive processor usage. So does Joe think he is so unpopular that he can’t even get 500-1,000 people to visit his site in a week? I doubt it. It looks like Joe went bargain hunting again for his hosting company. When I was hosted with GoDaddy, it cost me $3.99 a month and is still that price today.
Now what will it take to get the news media to really look into this story and talk to the people who might know the exact problem – specifically MyHostCamp?
True this could be Joe’s way of helping out Ted Stevens’ argument of the internet being nothing but a series of tubes.

JAMIE!
Btw - for 20 bucks, 5 bucks more than Joe is paying for hosting, can you help me figure out why my laptop won’t post to fdl? *g*
Excellent piece - the fact that no one MSM has mentioned a 15/month host is telling.
Jamie, thanks so much for all you do.
What you are posting, what Kos is posting and what FDLers on prior thread such as Cujo and Zergle are commenting has not yet made it into the TM.
If Swan could make the same point you are, in a film clip for the TM, I think the TM would go with it. They are always looking for the latest and Joezoe’s campaign has no comeback.
JMO.
MCCLOUD!
ahem, sorry. yes, but heaven forfend the ijits at cnn, nyt, msnbc, yadda yadda yadda do any kind of poking around. much easier to just assume that lieberman’s story is the truth.
oy vey.
Jamie!
NEDROOTZ!!!
The entire estabishment and its lap dogs in media are doing their best to help Lieberman latch on to his seat.
Whatever the result, this will have ramifications for both parties and the horde of operatives and pimps who control the political process in this country.
Toasty!
According to Wonkette, Leiberman thinks he’s paying more for hosting than these numbers. The conclusion I draw from this is that the gentlemen he hired for hosting probably turned around and outsourced to MyHostCamp and kept the difference.
Jamie, I’m just thankful that you’re not Joe’s tech guy. Not only did you shepherd FDL through all of those moves but did the recent, major features upgrade as well.
Joe wishes he had features to upgrade.
I’m afraid Joe has no upgrade path. He’s a political dead end, destined to anchor toy sailboats for the rest of his “career”.
I wish Ned could find a way to say something like, “one of the great things about the internet is that this sort of thing is easily traceable. I’m sure we will get to the bottom of this very soon and you’ll be able to report the facts.”
Why should CNN and the corporate networks dig for the truth? Their ad revenues probably come from that Goodstein guy and his ilk anyway. All those Lipitur and Viagra ads earn them good money! Think Joe is in bed with Big Pharma? These media clowns are not going to jump the Gravy Train unless and until Congress reforms the media and removes these insane conflicts of interest. Threin lies the Catch-22, of course. The cool thing about this is Lieberman has been so clumsy about it that there will be no place to hide for the stenographers.
1,236 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Thanx Jamie, now ken we get ANY updates from the battlefield? Where are Jane and Trex…does anyone have anything from the field, I don’t think we have seen the last of the political melodrama and attempted ratfuckin’. How are the folks in the foxholes at the voting places holdin’ up…methinks there will be some attempts by agent provocateurs to disrupt some pollin places.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T LET THE BASTARDS OFF THE GROUND!!!
Sorry if I’ve made duplicate posts… I’m EXTREMELY impatient.
To me the saddest thing about Lieberman is that he thinks he has a problem with his “web site.” If he needs a web site perhaps he should set one up on Geocities.
Ned Lamont is using a web-based infrastructure to build applications that reach voters. A great example was the Family, Friends and Neighbors application.
This is the advantage of a candidate who built a business wiring the campuses of our colleges and universities. Ned enables communication, and leverages the infrastructure to expand his message.
Liberman is befuddled because no one can figure out an alternative way to set up an e-mail account. Joe has demonstrated once again that he doesn’t understand the environment, the risks, and has no workable plan. Sort of like Iraq.
As Jamie indicates you evolve your infrastructure as your business needs change. Soon FDL will have a server farm in Christie’s backyard!
Go Firedoggies, bite ‘em in the ass!
This site is definitely loading slowly. And I see upthread that it’s also moving slow on a T1. Yikes. So just let me say pre-emptively, NED! FDL!
Here’s an interesting bit:
Who is Dan Geary? Via Steve Gilliard, ala Justing Rood, ala Dan Gerstein, the claim comes that this is the response from Lieberman’s hosting company:
From: “Dan Geary”
Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2006 06:05:17
To:xxxxxxxx@deweysquare.com
Subject: account status - www.joe2006.com
Hi Marion,
This note is to confirm that the suspension of displaying the website www.joe2006.com: was not due to to an overdue account. Friends of Joe Lieberman is completely paid in full. The screen that showed yesterday is a default image from the server. In order to isolate where the denial of service attack was coming into the site, we disabled it as rapidly as possible. Once we were able to isolate all the site files for study we were able to add an appropriate one-page maintenance message.
Your campaign has in fact paid every invoice submitted to it within a week and a half.
Regards,
Dan Geary
Rood says he’s in Nevada and after a Google, I discover there’s a Dan Geary in Nevada that is ” policy consultant”
Link to article on Geary
Link to Geary’s Company
Why is a consultant giving us the impression that he is the actual host provider?
Mary for now @ 5
Mary,
If you are running IE on a Windows version, it might be that a cookie for uploading Wordpress stuff is being blocked on your system.
I seem to remember that you are able to post using a neighbor’s computer. Just a thought here.
Is anyone really surprised that Joe’s peeps are complete idiots when it comes to The Tubes? Thank $deity for that, too.
woo, those two FDL servers are feeling the heat!
To quote a classic New Yorker cartoon (Carl Rose? At any rate, set in a lower East Side shoe store):
“Oh Joe! Don’t be so Scotch!”
What time do polls close?
NED!!!
j.cro Thank you so much for posting those links. I was unable to find the article on CNN.com (I passionately loathe that site with a passionate loathing, I can never find anything there)
Looks like Geary fleeced Joe, and developed and hosted his site on the cheap.
Go to www.theyoungturks.com, they are discussing the race live on the web.
God Bless, go forward!
CNN had a Kos post up in their discussion of this issue. They made no reference to any of the content, only saying that Lamont denied responsibility. So they saw, and didn’t think it newsworthy that the Lieberman site was wide open to attacks.
beard5 @ 28
You’re quite welcome. I wish I could find phone numbers for msnbc and cnn. You can find numbers to call on nytimes.com
Please do write.
Thanks Jamie for this and all that you do.
Joe’s people just don’t know how these internets work.
[reposted thought from an earlier thread]
There are many good comments in these last few threads, but I think “you get what you pay for” pretty much covers it all. Pay $15/month for a website that’s going to be assaulted by someone at some point (hey, anyone with any experience on the Internet knew that was coming) and that would probably have all sorts of demands placed on it in short periods of time and you’re going to have a website that’s not even worth $15 a month. Ask your idiot nephew (or a campaign staffer’s idiot nephew) to be the system administrator, and you’re going to get what you paid for.
The most hilarious thing is that for $4 a month you can get 250GB transfer from GoDaddy. They should have gone cheaper!
Was EPU’d below, posting again here…
Whoa that Ned has class. He’s hosting a cached version of Joe’s website on Ned’s own site! See Joe Loserman…that’s how you behave like a human being, instead of acting like a neocon shill.

California has relatively few refineries and the kinds of crude they can use and stay in compliance with strict state environmental regulations may be limited. We’ll have to see how much and how quickly the lost production can be replaced. Oil spiked $2/bbl yesterday and fell off 60-70 cents today.
The decline in price today results from the loss of Alaskan oil being downplayed by many. For some reason, I find this ironic. Saber rattling against Iran and even a war in Lebanon have no effect on the actual flow of oil but fuel speculative pressure anyway. Meanwhile a real loss in production is dismissed. I suppose it just wasn’t sexy enough. Psychology, psychology, psychology.
If you are interested, the Oil Drum has more about the details of what happened at Prudhoe Bay and why:

Clearly TradMed has this story and has elected not to pursue it.
I hope Joe and all the news organizations apologize for the hysteria when the truth finally comes out.
This from Robert Brigham’s blog:
“Now that the alleged Hacking story has been 100% debunked the next question is whether Sean Smith, Joe Lieberman’s campaign manager, will be held accountable for filing complaints with the Connecticut Attorney General and Chief State’s Attorney’s offices. Connecticut’s Penal Code includes:
Sec. 53a-180c. Falsely reporting an incident in the second degree: Class A misdemeanor. (a) A person is guilty of falsely reporting an incident in the second degree when, knowing the information reported, conveyed or circulated to be false or baseless, such person gratuitously reports to a law enforcement officer or agency (1) the alleged occurrence of an offense or incident which did not in fact occur, (2) an allegedly impending occurrence of an offense or incident which in fact is not about to occur, or (3) false information relating to an actual offense or incident or to the alleged implication of some person therein.
(b) Falsely reporting an incident in the second degree is a class A misdemeanor.
Not only did the Lieberman campaign lie to the press, but it appears they may have violated the law.”

http://robertbrigham.blogspot......break.html
If the Lieberman staff had reason to know the inadequacies of their web site before making accusations, tomorrow’s story may well be “LIEBERMAN CAMP ROCKED BY STUNNING DEFEAT AS CONNECTICUT ATTORNEY GENERAL INVESTIGATES THE SENATOR’S STAFF OVER INTERNET ACCUSATIONS.”
The Times has a front page article now on the Lieberman site meltdown. They cited the offer that the Lamont campaign made to send a technician to help get the site running again.
This is farcical: Joe Lieberman has been telling us America needs him and George Bush to make this country secure, but he can’t even secure his own puny little website. What a putz.
Geary Interactive has a denial of involvement:
“Please note that Geary Interactive has had no involvment with the official website for Senator Joseph Lieberman, www.Joe2006.com. We have never contracted or provided services for the creation, or hosting of this website. For more information, please contact Jean Walcher at J Walcher Communications at jean@jwalcher.com or Andreas Roell, Geary Interactive’s president and CEO, at andreas@gearyi.com.”
“Why is a consultant giving us the impression that he is the actual host provider?”
Because he’s working for Liberman and he most probably is responsible for chosing this ‘el cheapo’ host. Check dkos and MyDD, I’ve read it there…
Why is a consultant giving us the impression that he is the actual host provider?
probably b/c the consultant is charging the Liebushman camp $15,000/mo - for the service and burying it in “admin costs/overhead”
hey firedogs! ‘zup ?! just checking in from work as I can - gonna be good and wound up in about 2 hours

Jamie, your clear and rational explanation of how you do what you do, and how RGJoe’s crack IT team didn’t, parallels your fdl site management.

Ned Lamont is a mensch!
Richard 12 - Wonkette shows the campaign paying 2 Dog Media, which is a CT LLC, that is owned by someone who was/is very active in the CT Young Democrats, a Kerry Szeps.
Maybe someone in CT knows her and can get some scoop on what seems to have happened?
Here’s a letter that I sent to CNN, AP, MSNBC. Feel free to use it as well. The more people that write, the more likely that we will be heard:
Please remove or modify your article that falsely suggests that there is any credibility to the claims by the Lieberman campaign that Lamont or his supporters had any involvement in the recent malfunctions at the Lieberman campaign website.
All of the existing evidence suggests that the website failed because of the fact that Lieberman’s staff had utilized an inexpensive and inadequate website hosting service that lacked the capacity to deal with the increased traffic that occurred in the last few days leading up to the election.
The fact that your publication is printing articles repeating the Lieberman campaign’s baseless allegation without fully investigation is inconsistent with generally accepted journalistic principles.
I implore you to remove the articles regarding the Lieberman website promptly or to modify them to state only the facts. I am certain that your organization does not desire to inadvertently become a mouthpiece for a political campaign on the day of an election.
Below, I have provided a link to a website that contains relevant information regarding the events involving the Lieberman website today and yesterday.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....53827/3493
Thank you for your consideration.
Jamie: My hat’s off to you, once more, for all of the mostly invisible work you do to keep this great place afloat. And thanks for the straightforward explanation of Joe’s true webpage woes…
There’s no need to worry. It’s so existential. There will be a name change. From Mr., to Senator. Tonight.
Could someone post the MYHOSTCAMP addy and phone numbers again. I am e-mailing around to some news outlets and I thought I would make their job a little easier.
Sheeeesh.
clucking tweety: did anyone catch his little feel good sign of of LARDBALL: he was in a crowd of supporters of both candidates basically fomenting arguments and concludes . . .
paraphrasing : “this is great; democracy in action: we are sowwing it around the world and we are seeing it in action here today”
damn what an asshole!
Incredible! Obviously, some crooks handled Lieberman’s website, making a good profit on it:
“So it’s clearly apparent that the Lieberman campaign has no clue how much they really spent on hosting. They handed over $1,500 over the last quarter to “2 Dog Media” (no hit on Google) to do “web hosting and web changes”. So this guy, 2 Dog Media, went out and bought the cheapest web hosting he could find, $15/month, to best maximize his profits.”

Dan Geary may want to fend off his Denial of Service about now.
FDL seems to be resolved- loading right up now.
Wonder why Sen. Stevens doesn’t send Joe a plunger for his innernet toob?!
MadDog 20 - thank you. I am running IE on a Windows version on the laptop, but it should be configured the same as my computer here at work. I have deleted cookies (one of the few things I can do) and I can post at other wordpress sites from it.
Oh well, I get too easily distracted - I’m going to return to GO NED!!!!
MSM doesn’t even have to break a sweat digging for the truth. All they have to do is read their friggin’ emails, showing them where to get the facts.
gray @54 - apparently Joe hired Republicans to handle his website…
For what it’s worth, (prolly not much :-) ) I wasn’t able to access FDL for about 30 minutes. I have just now been able to get it to load. I am not computer savvy at all, but I just assumed that today being THE day, you guys had a lot of traffic. Joe is saying that ‘voters are being disenfranchised’ because his site is down. Gotta blame it on somebody besides himself, I guess.
But keep this on the low…. :)

That sounds like an excellent title for a chapter in Joe’s upcoming book. How I Ran the Worst Campaign in the History of Politics, Ever
Now that’s creative. “I want a do-over because I was too cheap to get a real website host! Wahh! I don’t understand the internets! No fair!!”
What a pathetic loser. Connecticut should re-elect him because he’s a net newbie? That’ll send a great message to the kids!

Phooey!! Got EPU’d! Ah, well. The following link goes to Justin Rood’s post on TPM Muckraker. Just by being a good reporter and asking questions, Rood inadvertantly caught them bullshitting. I’m not suggesting they blew up their website or left it vulnerable intentionally. However, I think this post clearly shows that they tried to squeeze a little “dirty-trick” lemonade out of their self inflicted lemons. Quite convenient that the guy falsely claiming to be a web host gives a nice “alibi” for the chief alternative theory to the websites problems, eh?

Don’t hold your breath, bd.
Folks, I have the pleasure to report that I voted three times for Lamont today, and I don’t even live in CT. How come? For the past couple of months I have been talking up Ned to my daughter, her husband, and his mom, all who live in Fairfield County. Each assured me they would vote for Ned today. And of course I credit FDL, Jane, and Christy for giving me the skinny on Ned.
Last night I called it for Ned by 2.5%. I still do.
Lou Dobbs speaking to Candy Crowley about bloggers and “the ugly tone”… she’s really wrinkling up her lip like something smells bad…

Love this quote from the 2dogsmedia site:
LMAO
Hugh #37 -
“The decline in price today results from the loss of Alaskan oil being downplayed by many. For some reason, I find this ironic. Saber rattling against Iran and even a war in Lebanon have no effect on the actual flow of oil but fuel speculative pressure anyway. Meanwhile a real loss in production is dismissed. I suppose it just wasn’t sexy enough. Psychology, psychology, psychology.”
What I also find interesting is the fact that the loss of 8% of domestic production was downplayed as not significant, but when the Repubs talk about drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge it is sold as a pancea to high gas prices in the U.S.
FDL is loading very slowly. According to the NY Times and other reliable sources that must mean that Lieberman is hacking it.
Mary at 57:
When you get a chance to get on that laptop that won’t allow you to post here, go to the FDL site and then double-click on that little red privacy report icon thingie at the bottom right of IE.
That should show you what cookies are being blocked at FDL (in my case, the only cookie I’ve got blocked here is the sitemeter.com site).
You might just have a cookie blocking you here at FDL wrt to Wordpress, while at other sites that use Wordpress, you’re not blocking their wp related cookies.
Deleting cookies doesn’t solve the problem since IE keeps a list of sites to block that grows over time and is separate from any individual cookie.
If the site is on the list as blocked, you have to go via IE into Tools->Internet Options-> Privacy Tab->Sites button-> and on the Managed Sites page, go scroll down the list of managed web sites and find firedoglake.com.
On the right side of the list it will show the setting of whether it is “Always Block” or “Always Allow”.
If it is blocked, you can change it there to “Always Allow”.
Don’t know if this is your problem or not, but it is worth checking.
Secret Mole down at NSA picked this phone call out of the either this morning… thought it was of interest.
Hi Al, This is Joe, How you been old friend?
Joe, Haven’t heard from you in ages, following you now and then between Hollywood style events for my film. So what can I do for you my man?
Al — you know this Internet thing-a-ma-jig that you invented, the thing Ted calls the tubes — well mine has gone haywire, and I thought maybe you could help my boys fix it today.
Joe, what seems to be the problem?
Al, It is election day, and the durn thing won’t load at all. Just plum busted. Can’t find my polling place, can’t find the schedule for my bus tour, can’t find any of my many voters. We’ve tried Control/alt/delete, and all those little F buttons — nothing seems to work.
Joe, did you hire a tech?
Nah, they are all too young, too geeky and braty for my style. I called up Karl R and he said he would send me one tomorrow — but that will be after the polls close. Karl said not to worry, his tech’s could fix that. But I’m not sure that’s the right path. Sounds a little bit on the immoral side.
Well Joe, I am sorry I can’t come up today, got a meeting about my next film production with the producer flying in a planeload of stars for me to meet — they all want to be in my next film. I do have some tech’s who link the programing on my TV Network with the Internet — I’ll see if any of them are available for a repair call. Anyhow, good to hear from you.
Thanks Al — appreciate anything you can do. By for now.
By Joe — oh yea, you could call the Geek Squad, they are in the phone book. See ya.
The strident — not sheepish — admission that Lieberman’s campaign has failed repeatedly to secure his website against hacking should be professionally embarrassing. Senator Lieberman sits on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and on the Armed Services Committee, both of which have responsibility for protecting the U.S. from cyberattacks. When will we hear a reporter ask, “If you can’t bother to protect your own computers, Senator, why should we trust you to protect America’s?” When will we hear one of Lieberman’s opponents ask?
Sent 3 letter to 3 networks;

from here or Duncan’s site and seen that
they were overloaded by the heavy traffic
from a popular site?
Can these people really be that stupid?
I would say no, but then Joe is a neocon, and
they have proven to be too stupid for words,
so ther ya go.
Why is that amazing? How often does the media report on something that you really know about and get it completely right? They either didn’t do their homework (research) or didn’t understand what they had learned.
When you mention
are you sure you weren’t suspended for excessive bandwidth usage instead? ISPs usually shut a site down due to excessive bandwidth usage. If a LAMP configured site is hit hard, it will “shut down” as in scenario A, but I’ve never seen an ISP agreement that says a site will be shut down due to “excessive processor usage”.
What I find amusing is that deweysquare - the consulting company to the Democrats - is the team that got the email from Dan. And why is he saying this? My guess is like others - he more than likely outsourced the hosting and web development - and maintained a lowcost offering.

Go top Joe’s official website and check out the fucking page. They automatically point the finger at Lamont without a shred of evidence and are actually asking him for an apology!
