My next Saturday Blue America guest at Firedoglake is going to be Eric Massa. That's 2PM East Coast time; 11AM on the West Coast this coming Saturday. I had a couple of great preliminary talks with Eric today and at one point he launched into a heated tirade about Karl Rove and the other puppeteers surrounding Bush.
This one was personal. "All they know how to do is smear people in the military. And why? Because they have never served in the military."
Eric is a veteran of 24 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy have served in the Middle East, Kosovo, Panama and as the Special Assistant to General Wes Clark when he was Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces. Like all decorated American fighting men who speak out against Bush's criminal and unconstitutional excesses, Eric will be attacked and swiftboated by Rove and the Republican far right smear machine led by the likes of craven and cowardly chickenhawks like Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney and Bill O'Reilly.
But today he was coming to the defense of another fighting Dem, Admiral Joe Sestak, being smeared by a cowardly Republican slimebucket, Curt Weldon.
I'll get into the whole story in a moment. But I want to make it clear that I'm not one of these people who thinks just because someone served in the military, that makes them more fit for public office than anyone else. I've run across veterans whose military service had enhanced their ability to serve the public, like Rick Penberthy, Chris Murphy, Jack Murtha, John Laesch, Joe Sestak and, of course Eric Massa, and I've run across veterans who have come out of the military completely unsuited for politics. Look no further than Republican extremist Randy "Duke" Cunningham for an example.
Few congressional candidates offer America a better opportunity for improving our government than Joe Sestak, a 31 year veteran of the Navy who retired as a Vice Admiral and is now running against a corrupt rubber stamp nutcase in southeast Pennsylvania. Joe served 6 sea tours with units of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets during which he made seven deployments to Europe, the Persian Gulf and the western and South Pacific. As the Battle Group Commander, he led an international coalition force of 30 U.S. and allied ships and 15,000 sailors, exercising command of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as senior diplomatic engagements throughout Southwest Asia, Europe and Africa.
So what does a sleazy Republican do to counter a sterling record like this? Swiftboat time!...
[For more on this, see Howie's full article on Down With Tyranny. I wanted to bring this to everyone's attention today because this sort of despicable political smear game has got to be called for what it is -- lying malarky and dirty politics. I'd say Weldon and his political operative cronies ought to be ashamed of themselves, but that would require them to have some remaining scruples. Just when you think you can't get more disgusted... -- CHS]
(The above photo is of Rear Admiral Joe Sestak, in uniform, back in 2001, delivering a speech (with Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Jones in the background, also in uniform). It's taken from Stars and Stripes, from a report on an American Shipbuilding forum in which Sestak and other military officers participated, while wearing their uniforms, as soliders and sailors in the US military. This was done in accordance with military regulations, and you didn't hear Curt Weldon whining about it back then, did you? Sestak cuts a fine profile in his dress blues, doesn't he?)

Howie!
Monk — good to see you — how’s tricks?
Hey Monk, howzit goin’?
Hey Howie! Eric’s another good one. I hope he and other vets who get swiftboated will respond like Jim Webb did.
Squids are for kids, but I’m supporting Sestak anyway.
Howie!
Joe Sestak is one of the “VoteVets” guys. We sent him money (Hubby is PA’er) a little while back. Check him out FDL:
http://www.votevets.org/
I’ve spoken with Eric on the phone a few times. I think he’s going to be an amazing guest on Saturday
Fitz!
Howie !
Eric !
Joe !
Baby Mittens!
Sestak is on the FDL/C&L/DWT Blue America Page already and Eric will be on it this week.
Howie — thanks so much for updating on the Sestak issue — and for talking with Massa. Fantastic work, as always!
I volunteered for Joe in the spring and will again in the fall (when kids go back to school, yeah!) and he is something. He is very smart and actually raised more money than Curt this past cycle. We here in PA are so thrilled to have a real candidate that we think can beat Curt.
We gotta hit these a*holes back when they pull out the Swift Boat playbook. It seems so obvious now; Kerry learned his lesson too late, but I think he learned it.
Hope you can include Jay Fawcett on one of your tours……we got a big mountain to climb in CO this year.
Thanks, Howie, for pointing out that there is NOT an absolute correspondence between military service and respect for American Constitutional institutions. In addition to your cite of Cunningham, I would say it’s important to remember:
Richard Nixon
Oliver North
George H.W. Bush
I have tremendous respect for veterans who seek to continue their service to our country through elective office. I would not want us to devolve into a country where, on its face, military service tilted the scale for choosing candidates. I support a number of Fighting Dems this year, not because of their military service nor in spite of it. I support them, and will continue to do so, because they challenge the shredding of our Constitution and the military sworn to uphold it.
Thanks.
Teddy, like you, I’VE HAD ENOUGH!
Peterr - left a comment for you last thread #136
Howie - can’t wait for Saturday woo hoo!
Howie, thanks for the preview on Eric Massa. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet some of our outstanding Democratic candidates for Congress through your FDL forums. And thanks for the swiftboating alert on Joe Sestak. I am going to send him an ActBlue contribution right now. Fight back!
Anne H -
Thanks - got it. I was thinking of writing to the local SF office, not DC, which should help it get through quicker.
This might be something the Roots folks could take up and organize . . . hint, hint. ;) . . . but anyone can write/fax a letter.
Peterr at 17 — definitely send it to a local office. It goes through much faster, and they have a means of forwarding letters to the DC offices that bypass the screening once it has been read by the folks in the satellite office, so your letter actually gets TO the intended elected official fairly quickly.
Oh, Howie, also, perhaps you’d better invest in some faster toobz for Saturday’s chat with Massa — he was on fire at YKos! I can’t imagine how you’ll keep up with him on Saturday without a toobz upgrade. Better get heat-shielded, insulated modelz….
Folks, for those of you who missed it, this guy Eric Massa can get a hall full of shy Kossacks on our feet stamping and cheering in seconds. In the palm of his hand, he had us!
So tired of this swiftboating smearing crap. Douchebags weren’t tough enough to enlist, but boy are they tough enough to direct flak towards those who did.
Reminds me of the smeariana graphic I created a while back:

i jes luv yer blue america updates, sir. i always larn a lot n git plenty of reason to have hope. thankee!
Teddy (#19)- Toobz! This guy was talking so fast and saying so much good stuff when I interviewed him that I went through 10 sheets of paper and had to take a nap after!!! He’s going to be an amazing guest. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s no wonder that imbecile he’s running against is afraid to debate him. Eric challenged him to debate for an hour in each county of the district but Kuhl, after refusing to respond, finally agreed yesterday– to one 30 minute debate!!
Sorry for the double post!
[Mod. - Second post deleted just cuz]
Woohoo, Howie, you brilliant man, you!
Woohoo also to lhp and bright-eyed-but-not-yet-bushy-tailed Baby Mittens! More pix soon, uh-huh, uh-huh, lhp?
per everyone else, great job Howie.
Neocons want to paint us as “surrender monkeys.”
Can’t think of a better way to counter that than with the candidates you’re finding.
Does everyone know Monk (at #20) designed the Blue America logo?
Hooooray Monk!!
A couple of quick points. Joe Sestak testified before Congress on March 9, 2005 as a Vice Admiral. I know this because the Navy’s transcript of that hearing refers to him as a Vice Admiral.
Vice Admiral is a three star rank, equivalent to a Lieutenant General in the other services. Thus, Joe Sestak was entitled to wear a uniform with the three stars on it, contrary to what the Republican smear merchant alleges. He was, in short, the rank he claims to be.
As Howie points out, Sestak was within his rights to wear this uniform during a Memorial Day service honoring veterans.
Finally, it didn’t take more than two minutes to find that document. How incompetent do you have to be to believe such a story? I suspect that at least some of the press to whom those press releases are faxed will be.
Hey Howie! Great Post as usual!
*xyz - worth a second read anyway :-)
Meanwhile . . .
“xyz” do you mind if I forward it to my close friends?
Howie @ 26
It was my pleasure to make the Blue America Logo.
I’m also in the processing of making some small Blue America html buttons/banners with the logo that bloggers can add to their pages that will link to the Act Blue/Blue America community page.

As a proud U.S. Navy veteran myself, the comments made by the swiftboaters absolutely anger me! HOW DARE THEY! For someone who has never served, they sure have alot of guts. Once again their hypocrosy shows through. “Support the troups” then turn around a stab an honorable man in the back. I’m so mad right now I can’t think of words…….
Teddy at 13
Well said. I agree 100%
Anchors aweigh my friends, AAAAANCHORS AWAAAAAAAY!!!!
sandlin,
By all means, this letter should be forwarded to anyone who might be interested! I didn’t write it, all I did was find it on another website. Here is the link to the website where I found it. It is also on the official Lamont Blog, I believe.
http://lamontblog.blogspot.com/
I would imagine that the writer of the letter and everyone else involved in the chain of communication wants this message to get out to the general public. That is why it was originally sent in to the paper to be published.
OT Average price for regular gasoline 7/25/06 in 50 states plus DC

National average today : $3.000
Highest average price : Hawaii $3.365
Lowest average price: South Carolina $2.820
For those following events in Connecticut, the average price is $3.225 the third highest in the country after Hawaii and California, having traded places with DC in the last 24 hours.

Well, a big day and I don’t mean that in a good way. In the AAA survey I use, the national average has hit $3.00, an important psychological benchmark. The Lundberg survey announced a similar breakthrough price earlier this week. Expensive gas is with us to stay. The only question is how expensive it will get. In keeping with this, oil prices remain elevated. While there is no specific reason at the moment for a further speculative spike, instability in the Middle East and in oil producing regions generally provides underlying pressure to keep prices high.
*xyz @ 11:05 am (#23) - Good letter to highlight. It’s looking like Joe resembles Bush a little more every day.
Hey Howie,
I’ve got an appt. on Saturday, but I look forward to reading what Massa has to say.
Any plans to write about Colorado’s 4th?
There’s the right way, the wrong way and the Navy way my Dad always said. Seems kind of appropriate for Sestak, John Laesch and the other ex Navy Dems.
angrycyclone (#34), I know exactly what you mean. I’m not a veteran but it still makes my blood boil when these chickenhawks pull this crap. Weldon ever served anyone or anything but himself. Sestak served in the military for 31 years– and rose to Vice Admiral because of active duty service. And then that corrupt slime has the gall to say Sestak is a disgrace to the uniform!! It drives me bonkers!
My opponent’s party has become legendary, in the media at least, as the party of great strategists. The governing principle of this great strategizing, we hear, is that they attack their opponent’s strength, instead of his weakness. Therefore, if their opponent is a man who has served long and honorably, they attack that honor, and act as if they think those long hours of diligence and years of service are so much dust to be wiped off their shoes …
For GrandmaJ who’s looking for some good news today, to Baby Mittens, and to anybody else here who needs a change of view:
I posted this yesterday as an OT on the Labor thread, but I think it got lost there.
Hope this gives you a moment of peace.

Nice catch Cujo at 11:08.
Dover Bitch (#40)- yes, I’m looking at that one seriously.
The Bush White House seems mostly immune to swiftboating by Democrats. Not because of their heroic valor on the battle field though. Their insulation from swiftboating stems from military draft dodgers, Bush, Cheney and Rove’s avoidance of, and aversion to actual fighting. None of these guys has any experience with military combat. Same holds for most of the rest of the neo-con ‘armchairs’ promulgating the inferno in the Middle East. Some might call these three gung-ho’s, damn the torpedo types, cowards. But I won’t. The hell I won’t! And these three unconscionable and unscrupulous misfits demand that we follow them into Armageddon if called upon.
Awesome, thanks Howie. Getting Musgrave out of Congress would be a gift to the world.
John Casper @ 11:18 am (#45) - Sad part is how easy it is to do that. Flag officers are often featured in stories, press releases, and transcripts on the military’s web sites. All you need to do to confirm that someone with an uncommon name like Sestak has a flag rank is to search for him within his service’s domain. Anyone who knows jack about the military ought to be aware of this.
Dang, hope I can get these two done before lightning busts my ‘puter’s chops again. (Meanwhile: CNN says the UN’s just confirmed that another of its (Nigerian) observers — AND his wife — were killed by an Israeli bomb on Monday.)
From ToL:
I just sent weldon a very ad hominem attack email. My first and boy was it was satisfying.
ayldt 44, great puppy pic - thanks.
lotus, I left you a response (#331) in the Galahad thread, dunno if you saw it as the timing was perfectly EPU’d.
Teddy at 13 - hear, hear.
The people responsible for these unwarranted attacks on Joe Sestak are slime, pure and simple.

ouch.
Sandlin -33 Great to see you on FDL darlin’ !
After meeting or listening to both during YearlyKos, here is my prediction: Eric Massa can win this easily if he meets enough people. He is energetic, has his stump speech down to an art form, can relate to the public on a personal basis and is charismatic as all get out. His focus on healthcare is something everyone can understand and support.
Sestak? Ehhhhh, not so much. He may be right on the issues but his focus seems more self-reflective and inward. His presentation style is all over the place and his voice reminds me of a late night DJ from the seventies. Very soft, Very low. ACK! Turn on the lights, you’re scaring me! He needs to tighten up his stump speech with a narrative arc and stop swallowing the microphone. Who cares what his issues while he is speaking? Sorry, Joe. It had to be said. Lighten up a bit and put some energy and organization into it. Your story is compelling. Don’t make your style a distraction.
Anne Holliday-58.
Thanks to YOU.
I’m hoping for continued, coordinated defenses to this slimeboating from Fighting Dems.
The flipside of these chickenhawks and their slimeboating is that, quite honestly, I feel that MY opinion on security issues will eventually count for less because I did not serve in the military.
These slimeboating proto-Fascists are making the world safe for their corporate masters, while denigrating those who’ve served in the military. When the pendulum swings back, eventually America may not listen to ANY who did not serve, thinking us all chickenhawks. The skewed perspective of those clearly ashamed of their lack of service — all of BushCo, Inc., — reminds me so much of all macho posturing: big swinging dicks, not so much.

I haven’t read the Rolling Stone article yet. But James Bamford has a lot of credibility. He warned us about the NSA decades before it became a household acronym.
Ridiculously OT:
Lance Bass of N’Sync just came out.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200.....lance_bass
Portia 59: Frankly, I think any candidate would suffer having been on stage with Eric Massa. He simply sucks all the wattage in the room towards him.
Joe may have improved since last we saw him in Vegas — there’s certainly room for improvement. I think, for instance, he needs to find surrogates to tell the story of Weldon’s evil regarding his daughter’s treatment. It’s almost too painful to hear Joe talk about it himself — he’s too exposed, too vulnerable-seeming.
I hope Joe gets the media coaching he needs; of course, I don’t know his district well enough to say whether his campaign will be on-the-airwaves or on-the-shoe-leather, so it’s hard for me to advise from afar. Your points are absolutely well-taken. Joe needs to tighten it up, all around: speech, style, narrative, story, and sell.
So, did Lance break Reichen up from the bf he won Amazing Race with?
See what I mean? I’m not even paying attention to martial law, now that kristinejoy’s dumped this news into my lap.

OT Israel bombed a UN post in Lebanon killing 4 UN soldiers. Kofi Annan described it as “apparently deliberate”. Now why would the Secretary General of the UN think that a clearly marked UN post that had been there for years and which the Israelis knew had been there for years and which had telephoned the Israelis 10 times over 6 hours about the proximity of Israeli shell fire had been attacked deliberately? I am not a conspiracy theorist but if it were deliberate it might be a way for the Israelis to scuttle an international force for South Lebanon which might be robust enough to interfere with the scope of their activities in the area.
The Israelis are certainly heavy handed and bloody minded enough for such act but it should be obvious even to them that the talk of an international force is just that ‘talk’. It would take months to put in place and basic questions about it have not even been asked. How large would it need to be? Where would the troops come from? What would its mission be? What would be the duration of the mission? What would its rules of engagement be? Like you, I have heard numbers like 10,000 and 30,000 and the possibility of a Turkish-Egyptian force followed by a European/NATO force whose purpose would be to disarm Hezbollah but these are as far as I can tell phantom numbers that have been thrown out and then picked up and repeated like there is some rationale behind them. There is again as far as I know no firm commitment by any country for one soldier let alone 10,000 and there has been no talk either of who would pay for the presence of troops from less than rich countries like say Egypt and Turkey. And disarming Hezbollah? This would be accomplished how exactly?
Of course, Kofi Annan could be wrong. The attack might not have been deliberate but rather the result of arrogant, callous stupidity.
Only a little OT
Howie
Have you had a channce to meet Dave Mejias? he is running against Peter King in NY 3rd CD.
He is NOT running as a sacrificial lamb (as apposed to us rabid venom dripping lambs). Mejias is running a real campaign. If you don’t know about the polling, the 3rd CD could go Dem.
This is a race that just needs some extra attention because it started so late. However, taking out King is such a big thing in terms of the synbolism and the message it send (not unlike the message sent by taking out leiberman).
If you don’t know Dave, it can be arranged.
PS Mejias used to be a marine

I’m so busy today I can’t read the theads or watch the hearings, but I will be pouring over every detail here at FDL later tonight. I can’t thank you all enough for being here. This is a wonderful place.
Ghostman (#63), you’re talking about Marcinkowski, the guy running against the execrable Mike Rogers. I did a story on him at Down With Tyranny and I’m considering a Michigan story to hit up all the Democrats running there in one shot. What do you think?
Oklahoma kiddo,
China condemned the killing of its soldier at the UN outpost and called for an immediate ceasefire. The problem is that a lot of the reporting on Lebanon is extremely superficial. How the rest of the world views it and what they are doing gets no mention or mention only in passing. I have been looking for a breakdown of Rice’s “peace” plan, for instance, and have yet to find one.
OK Kiddo– maybe they are watching (in horrid fascination) the deadly dance staged and financed by us, the very soon to be has-been world superpower.
Plus, if history is any guide, we will just veto anything that is brought to the Security Council.
Howie, 77: Marcinkowski! Yep, that’s the man! Sounds good to do a “sweep” on some of those Michigan races. I look forward to it…and I’ll go take a look at your article linked.
Oh, and for fdl readers, Marcinkowski is VERY critical of what the WH did to Valerie Plame. He’s definately in her corner.

OT. I laughed when I saw this one.
Conservatives want Rice transferred
Insight magazine report says there are GOPers who find her ‘incompentent.’
Nothing about Rumsfield,Chertoff, etc. etc. Ad Infinitum.
Dr Bong (#69), thanks for the info on Anderson. I haven’t been following the race but I’ll take a look. A lot of “conservative Democrats” have been contacting me lately and I don’t do stories about someone just because they’re better than a neo-Nazi Republican. I hope they all win but for our series, I’m just concentrating on real progressives. If someone can’t campaign on ABSOLUTE freedom of choice for women and can’t defend gay equality, I can’t contribute money to them. And if I can’t contribute, I’m loathe to ask anyone else to. That said, I sometimes do stories about “moderates” on Down With Tyranny without adding them to the Blue America Page. I did an interesting one this morning on Mike McGraw in Georgia, the guy running against Steve Colbert’s brilliant find, Lynn Westmoreland. I recommend that anyone who wants to know what goes through my head when I’m trying to figure out who to invite for our Saturday chats, read the piece.
looseheadprop (#72), I’ve done a couple of pieces on Dave Mejias at Down With Tyranny and he’s scheduled to be a guest at FDL in a couple weeks!! He’s gonna beat King. GREAT candidate!
Sorry again for the OT. I just get all giddy when a celebrity comes out, terrible gossip I am. Gays in spaaaaaaace…..
Christy. you there?
OT with apologies. I lost track of where you want us to report any luck, or lack of same, in contacting senators.
DeWine answered my e-mail on Specter’s proposed legislation with a canned reply, so I cobbled something together (with a nod to help from an ACLU mailing today), & tried respectfully to slap him upside the head AGAIN, as per copies below, gr-r-r.
———————————
Dear Senator DeWine:
Sorry. I cannot afford to wait. I wanted to know your position on Sen. Arlen Specter’s outrageous proposed legislation which would gut FISA legislation, and essentially removeCongressional oversight of the Executive branch.
Now I understand your committee plans to vote on this matter Wednesday, July 26. Please review and reverse your plan to vote in this manner
I urge you to PULL S. 2455 and perform your duty as United States Senator by demanding the facts about the president’s illegal spying program, BEFORE legislating on an issue so clearly at odds with our Constitution.
Congress has the right and OBLIGATION to oversee the Executive Branch, and protect our fundamental freedoms.
We, your constituents, expect you to HONOR and FULFILL this obligation.
I also urge you to OPPOSE S. 2453, which would endorse and support the president’s claim of inherent power to wiretap Americans at will without any individual, independent check.
Sincerely, Adie

the United States, Europe, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia expressed their “determination to work immediately to reach with the utmost urgency a cease-fire that puts an end to the current violence and hostilities.”
“She [Rice] insisted it [the statement above] say ‘work immediately to bring a ceasefire,’ not ‘work to bring an immediate ceasefire,’” the diplomat said.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07.....r=homepage
As examples of bastardization of the language, the current usage of “immediate” and “urgent” as meaning “not now” and “no hurry” must be recognized for the very tortured creations they are. To work immediately on something when in principle you are already working on it is a nonsense construction. Of course, where it can’t be used is in the phrase “immediate ceasefire” since this might be misconstrued as calling on someone like the present Secretary of State to actually do something. As for “urgent”, things are so urgent apparently that Rice is planning on flying off to that other major trouble spot in the world Malaysia. But, of course, the statement does not say “urgent”, it says the “utmost urgency” so in Rice’s twisted linguistic world that apparently reduces the pressure on her even more to do anything about the dying in Lebanon.
If Admriral Sesak did retire as a Vice Admiral what has bee his campaign’s response? I hope they aren’t just letting this go.

What John C said at 25. Great job with finding candidates to bring a feeling of trust back Howie. What happened to Sestak over his sick child was abhorrent. It is incredibly hard to ask anyone to go through that kind of attack for the “benefit” of running for office when they don’t intend to use the office to milk lobbyist dollars. It makes you very proud to see someone willing to stand up to that kind of attack (and super pissed off that someone makes it).
I’m sure Eric will be a great candidate too. You pick ‘em Howie. You’ve earned a lot of trust with your picks.

“And the new briefing room will boast a video wall behind the press secretary for officials to use to illustrate their points.”
Left out that the video wall will be current and TIVO’d Fox News though. *g*

Great news that Mejias will be a FDL guest soon. My current plan is to attend the kickoff this weekend. Do you want photos?
Even if I don’t get there I think I can arrange to have someone else who will be there take pix.
I met Eric the first time at Wes Clark’s first annual national meet-up in Little Rock last summer. He had recently decided to run at that time and I was so impressed with his articulation of the issues that matter - so passionate! I got to spend a little time with him at ykos this summer and he’s EVEN BETTER now!
The guy is definitely ready for primetime - I’m so happy he’s gonna be a guest here. Way to go, Howie!
I’m a blogger from the 29th. Just wanted to point you all to some coverage of the race at
DragonFlyEye
and at RochesterTurning.com (which you’ll go to if you click my name)
I forgot to explain: the 29th is the district where Massa is running (against a guy named Randy Kuhl).
Tom T -#101: I don’t know if he still gives them out, but Eric used to have buttons that said “NOT Kuhl” - I still have mine.
Totally OT, I know, but this is just too good. Americablog linked to Wonkette: Sweet Ann Coulter on Deutch show said Bill Clinton is a latent homosexual. The whole transcript is snorting hilarious.
looseheadprop (#98)- YES!! I would love a good photo or two– and I bet Christy would too.
Jfisk at 11 I volunteered for Joe in the spring and will again in the fall (when kids go back to school…
I was starting to get upset til I realized I wasn’t on the Lamont/Lieberman thread any more :D
Adie at 85 has personal I.D. showing. If she was just using cut and
runpaste, she might not have seen her I.D. or wanted it to be there.egregious 106
THANKS! d’oh! I have SO much to learn from you folks!
Really appreciate your other posts, on topic, very much egreg. ;->
busy week here, & I just stoopidly wanted folks to know I’m trying, sigh. . .
If anyone’s still around, may I assume post has been scrubbed of pers. i.d. for me & the [oog] esteemed Senator? Would appreciate lil’ ‘checkup’, moderator, much thanx!

[owe u BIG, Moderator. Owe everyone here!]
Joe Sestak is a great candidate, and there are other great Democratic military candidates running in his district–Bryan Lentz an Iraq war veteran and former prosecutor running for the state house, for example.
It’s going to be a competitive year, and hopefully a Democratic victory in November. The Republicans are scared to death that they’re going to lose it this year, though, and if anything we’re going to see the swift boating pick up come the fall–against all of our fighting Dem candidates in the PA-7
Thank you Howie for all you do and for bringing these men to light.
I started working with Eric in the summer of 05 when Eric was committing himself fully to the netroots. He began his campaign the day after the 2004 election and has his ducks in a row. He has gotten endorsements from every County Democratic Committee (a first), he has the support of the Dem mayors of Corning and Elmira, whom he helped elect by boots on the ground training, and is supported by the labor unions. His opponent accused him of running a national campaign and not aware of the local issues. A joke, of course, because Randy Kuhl has been voting against his constituency since he went into office (and before that as a state senator), while Eric voices the frustration and needs of the citizens of NY-29. His campaign, without sacrificing boots on the ground, has reached out nationally, even forcing the DCCC to support him after they tried three times to raise a primary opponent against him (he is now unchallenged in the primary in September), he has become a Netroots Endorsed Candidate, and he is online weekly at the very least. He is a candidate for the future. He put together the Band of Brothers (Veterans for a Secure America) and while without resources to operate it as an organization, some of us have worked on F-D.com to keep this movement a cohesive force even though the candidates themselves are hunkered down in their districts fighting for… well, fighting for America! Eric Massa and Jim Webb and Joe Sestak are natural leaders of this Vet Force that Bernie Quigley has called the vanguard of the New Democrats spoken of by kos and mydd. Eric is now scheduled for a debate with Kuhl; though on a limited venue it will be a chance for Eric to go face to face with the shortgun weilding, wife ab
