I wish I could impute nefarious intent to the effort of traditional media types to make the blogosphere's opposition Joe-nertia "all about the war," but if I had to guess I'd say it was more due to abject laziness and a lack of native curiosity. As I've written many, many times before, my rabid lambiness took root during the Alito cloture vote, when Lieberman sided with the Gang of 14 to put a sexist, elitist, fundamentalist Dobson-loving bigot like Strip Search Sammy on the Supreme Court. I feared the country could not survive another one. And when interviewed for the new Time Magazine article on the race, Markos noted that he himself had said "enough" after Lieberman dicked everyone around on Social Security.
But that didn't fit the narrative that both Lieberman and Time are aggressively pushing. Says Markos:
I was interviewed for this story but didn't make it in. You know why? Because the reporter asked me why we were targetting Lieberman, and I said my motivation was Lieberman's refusal to fall in line on social security until it was obvious Bush's efforts were dead.
Apparently it didn't fit the "anti-war" frame with which the media insists on viewing this race.
Objecting to Holy Joe's warmongering is a perfectly good reason to oppose him, but it does not appear to be the unifying factor that many would have it. Lieberman's done so much skeevy shit over the years everyone has their own reasons for wanting him off the national stage, feel free to name your own in the comments. But it sure does make for an easy headline, huh?
Meanwhile, the fine folks over at Schumer Watch are keeping the heat turned up on the head of the DSCC. What will the Ego that Roared do if Joe-nertia jumps ship? Maybe he should take a cue from Russ Feingold. (Don't worry. I'm not holding my breath.)

Welcome back, Jane!
You definitely coming to Pittsburgh?
Jane!!!!!
OT.
Look at this quote from the “sage of Omaha”, Warren Buffett.
(Snip)
“I love it when I’m around the country club and I hear people talking about the debilitating effects of a welfare society,” he said.”At the same time, they leave their kids a lifetime and beyond of food stamps. Instead of having a welfare officer’ they have a trust officer. And instead of food stamps, they have stocks and bonds.”
This is one for the quick response files.

Jane- I left you more detailed comment on the thread of your earlier post. But, are you going to be based in the New Haven area?
Joementum reminds me of the Family Guy epi with the flashback to Stewie at Woodstock, singing (to the tune of “America The Beautiful”) “Establishment, Establishment, you always know what’s beeeeest…”
Jane!
and rabid lambs!

Hey, they earned it by osmosis. Poor people should get themselves better families.
Are there rabid lamb-bats? Or do the rabid lambs have bats in their mouth, and when they bleat they shoot bats at you?
I got nothin’.
Eli — yes, I’ll be in Pittsburgh tomorrow night. I’m in Terre Haute right now. I’m driving from Starbucks to Starbucks — it’s like herding a caravan of poodles through the desert, looking for T-Mobile WiFi.
And yes, VG, I’m going to be in New Haven for a month or so, at least that’s what we’re planning right now. But I’m keeping it loose. It’s the wonderful thing about blogging, have WiFi, will travel. I’ll look for the comment later tonight, gotta get to Indianapolis right now.
Eli %u2014 yes, I’ll be in Pittsburgh tomorrow night.
Woohoo!!!
*does the Hamsherdance*
OT — Pardon me, Jane but I wanted people to know that Chris Matthews said he will be on The Colbert Report tonight.
However, I cannot find anything to verify that. (Surprise, surprise.)
TV Guide and Comedy Central’s official website for The Colbert Report say it is Mark Bowden. Just wanted people to be on the lookout for it, in case he is the guest tonight.
Matt O., I was not listening carefully enough, but I thought he said that Colbert would be on Hardball tomorrow.
dunno though.
Hello Jane,
Nice to hear your voice. Really nice. When in Conn., do you have time for breakfast/lunch/dinner? I could certainly make the trip….
Re: Leiberman:
It’s not all about the war. It’s all about the suck. Suck, suck, suck. He sucks.
Welcome back Jane, and come visit us in the Boston area.
Watching the reports come out each week on decision of the Supreme Court is more than enough reason to seek the retirement of any Senator who failed to do everything he/she could to keep Alito off the Court. And Social Security would have been enough, too. And then there’s this awful occupation of Iraq.
Re: Leiberman:
It’s not all about the war. It’s all about the suck. Suck, suck, suck. He sucks.
He. Is. A. Republican. It’s not just the war.
angie –
You’re probably right. Nevermind, nothing to see here.

Jane– my favorite restaurant ever is Pasta Nostra in South Norwalk CT. The best Italian food on the planet. Loud, small, and very strict on arrival times for reservations cause they never rush you, but the food is out of this world exceptional and the service impeccable. I will call Joe and tell him to treat you with love and grace (especially from me) if you decide to go.

Matt, angie, I heard “not tonight” for Tweety on Colbert also. Is either Tues or Weds.
Billmon has a lengthy, thoughtful post about the Kos Kerfuffle http://billmon.org/archives/002482.html
Nice to hear from Ms. Hamsher. It’s like a virtiual road trip. Except no sightseeing pics this time. But no complaints. Thank you for the post.
Things should get fun in one area: Norquist is busted for money laundering and lobbying in McCain report (despite longstanding GOP denials that this is what Norquist did). Norquist’s response is to call McCain a delusioinal liar.
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001003.php
Schadenfruede is kind of not nice, but to be honest, I got a peaceful feeling when I read the piece.
I also have a peaceful feeling when I read about all the non-bunco candidates that the lambs in wolves clothing (that is, Mssrs. Schumanel) are not supporting: even those who look like winners. But that is the peace of numbed, outraged shock. These guys have a record they think can stand up against some of those primary results? I don’t think so.
All I gotta say is: Turnip Day. HST deliverd it himself off the cuff. I hope Kissell and McNerney can do as well. I bet Tester can after seeing his debate.

It would be a lot more fun to see Tweety on Colbert’s turf though. I will stay up to see if he shows up, Matt O.
“Lieberman’s done so much skeevy shit over the years everyone has their own reasons for wanting him off the national stage”…
I think there are plenty of non-targeted dems guilty of any single one of Lieberman’s atrocities, but few combine them all in one whiny, hang-dog package in a blue state, or go on TV all the time to shick a shiv in the back of their party.
Taking down Lieberman will be the biggest wake-up call Schumer and the DC Dems have ever had. If Florida didn’t do it. and losing the Senate on ‘02 didn’t do it, and Ohio and Swift Boat Vets didn’t do it. and Hackett didn’t do it, and Abramoff didn’t do it, and Testor didn’t do it, may this will.
It’s the grass roots version of “Here’s a nice sharp stick. Now poke it in your eye.”
It would be a lot more fun to see Tweety on Colbert’s turf though. I will stay up to see if he shows up, Matt O.
I assume Colbert will be in character even if he’s on with Tweety, yes? That will be interesting.
via tbogg comments, photoshop of GWB from Canada, very funny:
Chimperator
Joe lost me during the Florida recount. He was no where to be found. Cheney was doing what a VP candidate should be doing; being the pit bull. Lieberman was quietly sitting on the sidelines insisting that some votes are more holier than others (late and incorrectly registered voters in the services), and other inane ideas.
Operation “One Threat A Week Until Election Day” is now under way.

Limbaugh Detained At Airport
Image
Joy Purdy
Reporting
(CBS4 News) WEST PALM BEACH Sources have confirmed to CBS4 News that conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been detained at Palm Beach International Airport for the possible possession of illegal prescription drugs Monday evening.
Limbaugh was returning on a flight from the Dominican Republic when officials found the drugs, among them Viagra.
Limbaugh entered a plea deal back in April in a previous case where his charge of fraud to conceal information to obtain prescriptions was dropped under the condition he continue undergoing treatment for addiction.
Limbaugh had admitted to being addicted to pain killers on his radio program and had entered a rehabilitation program prior to that arrest.

I hope so. What makes this different is, it’s the first such wakeup call that they can’t rationalize away by saying, “Oh, we must still be turning off those fickle swing voters. We must triangulate more so those rabid lambs won’t scare away Middle America!”
What scarcrow said @15. The 5/4 balance has certainly shifted towards oppression….
Whiney Joe agreed with the GOP that the Democrats were targeting the absentee votes of servicemembers during the Florida brouhaha. It shut down the absentee-ballot-contesting process. Incroyable!
Morris Sheppard, I left Cocoa a mash note at 166 two threads back. ;)
Whiney Joe agreed with the GOP
Well, duh.
Jane!
Just read you’re going to be here in “Hoosierville” tonight in the other thread. Welcome. We’re not as bad as everyone says. We’re actually pretty nice people. Hope to see you if you swing throught the Windy City, maybe. Good to see you back.
OT: Before I go and read Jane’s article or anything, I should make this very important point. “Squadron” isn’t a term applied solely to units of military aircraft. It was originally applied to small cavalry units. It is still used to this day to describe some ground units in the U.S. Army.
From the Wikipedia entry:
I only mention this because I see how confused we are trying to figure out how lambs, or any hooved creature, could fly. I just wanted to resolve this issue before someone went into cognitive overload. One David Brooks at a time is all this planet can handle.
Now, speaking of the U.S. Army, we return you to your square peg, round hole dilemna.
There was some Democrats like Biden and Clinton that supported the war resolution in the Senate. There was one Democrat who passionately ADVOCATED for regime change in Iraq and that was Joe Leiberman. We know the results. Over 2500 young American men and women have died in a war that was instigated based on a pack of lies. Over 20,000 seriously maimed. We are already hearing about the veterans of the Iraq war who are homeless. And what about the thousands that will suffer seriousl psychiatric disabilities for the rest of their lives. All of this to fullfill Joe Lieberman’s NeoCon agenda. My prayer is that the people of Connecticut will send this war-monger into retirement.
Ah, Joe - how do we loathe thee? Let us count; there are so many ways. But it comes down to this: you put yourself before your party, and your country.
Mary, just gotta say - you are humor-impaired like Ned Lamont is a DLC autobot.
The very first thing that told me Lieberman was a wanker par excellence was his teaming up with Lynne Cheney to form the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.
Then there were his threats to defund the SEC if Arthur Leavitt instituted a few new rules that marginally might have required some additional accountability from his favorite
clientscampaign contributors. Then there was the phony moralizing over Clinton’s indiscretions. He practically leapt into the well of the Senate to be the first to tell the country how necessary it was to put Clinton in stocks in the town square. Puritanism and priggishness are a nasty combination.
And on, and on, and on.
The vote for the war is not deal breaker for me either. Both votes for first and second Gulf wars were tough to judge realistically, wthout hindsight getting in the way. Here is my list:
1) sneaky cynical maneuvers on Alito and bankruptcy bill,
2) dishonest pandering on reproductive rights (I think I am somewhat more conservatie here than most FDL people, but the extreme gravity of the issues involved -what is right balance of the two interests- means dishonesty on this topic is for all practicle purposes unforgivable in my book
3) delusional irresponsible nonsense on Iraqi war over last year (not the vote, but the BS-ing around about the situation when the country is in a serious dilemma after 3 years of negligence by administration. If someone thinks that = “all about the war vote” then they are being intentionally obtuse)
I’m pretty sure Joe is to the right of Specter, and I would happily remove Specter’s heart with an ice cream scoop.
Tweety will BE ON the Colbert Repor Tuesday night…OK Stephen ROAST TWEETY REAL GOOD
hehehe
but naval squadrons exist too! Sheep can swim (can’t they?) so maybe Brooks was talking about rabid lambs at sea?
1) sneaky cynical maneuvers on Alito and bankruptcy bill,
I would love to see some kind of definitive statistical breakdown of how Joe voted when it didn’t count (i.e., not close or after cloture) vs. when it *did* count (i.e., close or for cloture).
Jane,
“I’m driving from Starbucks to Starbucks — it’s like herding a caravan of poodles through the desert, looking for T-Mobile WiFi.”
I hope you’re working on a book. Road trips have changed over the years. I’m glad you’re back, brimmig with piss and vinegar, and coming up on one of the most important political campaigns in recent American history, one which you’ve already helped considerably.
I just sent Ned another $20.
There are a lot of defense industry workers in eastern connecticut and they should not be ignored… I tend to think that they are not as anti war as most of us… Also the insurance industry is from Hartford do there are a lot of repug big biz types…
What is the strategy to go after these votes is at all?
Perhaps if the GOTV works it might not matter… dunno. We need ned!
Can’t they put limpballs in jail for violation of his court agreement to behave nicely?
Olberman is too funny…He just said the drugs found on loonbaugh could be anything from Viagra to Vagisil…LMAO!
FWIW: Joenertia was a strong proponent of NAFTA!
I wish I could impute nefarious intent to the effort of traditional media types to make the blogosphere’s opposition Joe-nertia “all about the war,” but if I had to guess I’d say it was more due to abject laziness and a lack of native curiosity.
I seriously think they’ve been paid off, not for this particular story, but for long-term biased reporting. It’s the simplest explanation for their unending willingness to report ridiculous lies, while the truth is evident to any halfwitted observer who has had a pulse for the last five years.
“I’m pretty sure Joe is to the right of Specter, and I would happily remove Specter’s heart with an ice cream scoop.”
Eli,
I think one of those funky spoons for making melon salad balls would work better.

good point about the sea lambs, but I don’t think that was what Brooks meant. You couldn’t have rabid sea lambs, since sea mammals are not prone to rabies. I’m sure Brooks was not advocating something so illogical. That would be just silly.

More size-appropriate, anyway.

Cujo359 — wiki is a little off. I recall the 1st Calvalry Division — composed of several Brigades, each of which might have several Battalions, each of which had 4-6 companies, and each company might have several squads (about 15-25 soldiers each). That was VN era. But if you’re 1st Cav Div, you do fly — in choppers — and dangle your feet off the side. Never saw lambs, though. However, recruiting standards have changed since then, so . . .
I seriously think they’ve been paid off, not for this particular story, but for long-term biased reporting. It’s the simplest explanation for their unending willingness to report ridiculous lies, while the truth is evident to any halfwitted observer who has had a pulse for the last five years.
Why would they need to be paid off when their owners and high-level bosses are all Republicans?

EPU’d crosspost at TBogg:
Michelle Malkin can be sufficiently criticized as evil without slurring mentally ill people:
And speaking on behalf of bipolar/ manic-depressives everywhere, which I can do since it’s June and I’m in mania, leave the mental illness out of it.
You can simply describe her as evil, with a dark and bitter soul.
Mental illness => sympathy.
Evil public speaker => villify/deport.
See? Easy.

As someone pointed out a day or so ago, it’s revolting and pathetic to pretend that siding with the party with a stranglehold on all three branches of government is some kind of courageous independent stand.
scarecrow @ 5:38 pm (#55) - There are both squads (units of 9-12 people) and squadrons (company- or battalion-sized specialty units). There’s a Wikipedia entry for the U.S. Army that sort of explains this. There’s a note at the top asking someone to rewrite the thing, so read carefully. You’ll note that the other link in my previous comment has a brief TOE listing. It lists far more vehicles than a squad could possibly drive.
Really, an ice cream scoop is more of a brain removal tool. For a heart it would probably be best to use a grapfruit spoon and some salad tongs. Or so I’ve heard. I’m just guessing, really.

I will defer to your judgment. I’m pretty lousy with tools.
scarecrow @ 5:44 pm (#63) - While the idea of a naval squadron is a bit vague (it usually consists of two or more ships), it does exist. I guess, like cleter, that this was just too silly even for Brooks. Cavalry units, OTOH, do have at least a passing relationship with hooved animals.
So, Limbaugh’s got a limp bough?
‘Only dopes use dope’
;>)-
I imagine the following late-in-the-primary-season Lamont ad:
Gritty production value, hand held cam, cinema verite style: It is night on a street, raining. Siren blarring. As the camera swings around, an abulance comes around a corner at the end of the street and speeds past. Pulls into the emergency room drive about a half a block away.
Shot two: inside the hospital, doors burst open and in rush EMTs with a gurney. Nurses rush to them and direct them into a room. Police come in after the stretcher and a Doctor rushes up, back to camera, and asks what happened.
Police Officer 1: It bad, I haven’t seen anything like this before….
Police Officer 2 (not letting P.O. one finish): Beaten, raped, looks like she was stabbed in the shoulder with a knife…
P.O 1 (continuing) but she’s tough, she’s gonna make it, right Doc? She’s a tough kid, Jeez, don’t let this ruin her life, she’s so young — younger than my daughter…
P.O. 2: Don’t let this ruin her life, Doc….
Man comes running in the same door, drenched from the rain: “Where’s my daughter? Is she OK? Where is she officer?!
reverse shot of the Doctor — it’s Lieberman:
Well, I’m sorry boys, she’s gonna have to take a bus to another hospital. I am sure she won’t mind, right?
Narrator: Don’t Let Lieberman ruin your daughter’s life. Vote for Ned Lamont.

Hi, Jane. It’s good to see you in fine posting form. What will it take for the MSM to “get” that Joementum is an obselete, out-of-touch anachronism who no longer represents his constituents (other than, perhaps, the defense industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the financial industry)? Rabid frothing antiwar lambs attack George W. Bush’s favorite “Democrat.” At Kos’s orders, I suppose. Yawn.
Well, on to the subject at hand. After reading the SchumerWatch article, I find it interesting, as in mildly insane, that Schumer would think that most people in Missouri or Montana would be watching Connecticut as a way of figuring out whom to vote for. Yes, there probably are three or four people in each state who might be influenced by such things, but it seems far more likely they’ll be thinking about whatever affects them in Missouri or Montana. I certainly don’t watch Connecticut to figure out how I’m going to vote. I know where my incumbents stand, and if I don’t like them I can find out where their opponents stand.
Ugh, please, no prison rape jokes.
What we tolerate among the incarcereated so blithely amounts to cruel and unusual punishment by looking the other way, and it does us no credit to make sport of it.

a naval squadron is a grouping of large ships — a grouping of smaller ships is a flotilla. So swimming sheep would be in squadrons and aquatic rabid lambs would travel in flotillas. Brooks is indeed a confused man !

Dam Jane came within 30 miles.
The first time I went negative on joe was when he was first up to put down Clinton for some thing that was none of his business. The only reason for this was political hay.
Then I started paying attention and saw that he very often would vote to deregulate something, like for instance the accounting industry. Then years later enron happens.

Drudge is a capitalist. At some point (soon? now?) he is going to start the red siren thing on all the republican slime ’cause that’s where the future of yellow journalism is.
Argument against report puzzles NYT editors
“In a note on the paper’s Web site Sunday, executive Editor Bill Keller said the Times spent weeks discussing with Bush dministration officials whether to publish the report.”
“Keller said the administration also rgued “in a half-hearted way” that disclosure of the program “would lead terrorists to change tactics.”

Someday, every interesting presidential administration gets its history written, and they will describe how that administration conducted its business. I wondered what will be written about the GW Bush administration. Mark Twain’s Pudd’n head Wilson came to mind.

This is hysterical. They just had a commercial about the 11pm news that said. “Limbaugh caught again”….I wonder what that means, maybe they already have a copy of the report from the Airport security inspectors.
as a child, I always found the title of that Twain story offensive …

Drudge is a capitalist. At some point (soon? now?) he is going to start the red siren thing on all the republican slime ’cause that’s where the future of yellow journalism is.
No. This is a common misconception about media in general. Advancing the Republican narrative *always* comes first, profit second. Make as much money as you can *without* damaging the Republican cause.
Bear in mind that most of the media’s parent companies (and I suspect Drudge’s as well) dwarf their media segments and/or care more about ideology than profit (i.e. Murdoch, Scaife, Moon). Their big-picture interests are much better served by getting the pro-Republican message out.
