[Howie's Blue America series continues to be a fantastic highlight of progressive Democrats in races all over this nation of ours. Today, we are fortunate to not just have Howie's article -- which is great -- but also one of the featured candidates -- Larry Kissell -- here to chat with our readers. Thanks, Howie, for setting this up! -- CHS]
North Carolina has 13 congressmen. Six are Democrats, and they all seem pretty safe bets for re-election in November. All 7 Republicans have Democratic challengers -- and two of these Democrats are poised to defeat powerfully entrenched GOP incumbents. What these two races have in common is that their opponents are both far right Bush rubber-stamps. Let's take a quick look at each of them and their districts.
Robin Hayes represents the 8th CD, the south-central part of the state including Cabarrus County at the tip of the old textile corridor -- devastated by Bush's "free trade" policies -- and east to Fayetteville with parts of Charlotte. This is a swing district of sorts, although Bush scored 54% in 2000 and 2004, about what Hayes has been getting since he was first elected in 1998.
Hayes is most famous for breaking down and weeping like a baby after DeLay, Blunt and other Republicans forced him, on the floor of the House, to vote against his constituents interests to break a 214-214 tie for some hideous trade policies that wreaked further havoc and despair on North Carolina's textile industry.
He is generally a posterboy for weak-charactered Republican rubber stamp irresponsibility. His voting record is positively abysmal: he ties for the absolute worst congressmen on every single issue focusing on corporate subsidies, education, human rights and civil liberties, and everything concerning criminal and civil justice. No one in the entire House is worse than Hayes on these issues. He gets a flat zero on his votes on all of these -- and doesn't have a decent voting record on any other issues either.
Charlie Taylor's voting record is about the same. Where he stands out, however, is in the corruption department. This is his 8th term representing the 11th CD, the extreme western end of the state, the heart of the Great Smokey Mountains. It's a rural district, overwhelmingly white, somewhat poorer and more Republican than Hayes' district. The only major city is Asheville. Kerry did considerably better here than Gore had 4 years earlier.
Taylor's weakest point is that he is widely considered to be the most corrupt politician in contemporary North Carolina. A member of Jerry Lewis' Appropriations Committee (Lewis is currently under Federal investigation himself), Taylor is a major self-server and has been caught up in scandal after scandal, far beyond his involvements with allegedly taking tainted money from DeLay and Abramoff.
Two counties in his district threatened to garnish his congressional salary because he refused to pay his property taxes, and he owns a bank that loans cronies money that never gets paid back and gets written off (after portions, some observers allege, are kicked back to the slippery congressman).
The men opposing these two weak and disgraceful Republicans are as different as night and day from each other. One, Heath Shuler, is a flashy favorite son being lavishly pushed by the DCCC. He fits their model perfectly: down the center moderate and totally uncontroversial. He's best known-- and was recruited by DCCC Chair Rahm Emanuel because-- he is a former NFL quarterback (for the Washington Redskins). His website could have been put together by Emanuel himself: slick and very light on issues beyond studied support for mom and for apple pie. His positions are standard Democratic Party fare, much of it pabulum.
Although you can quickly see Shuler's a gun supporter, you'd be hard-pressed to find out that there's a war in Iraq, let alone how he feels about it...although he definitely honors our veterans. I hope he wins because there is no comparison between him and Taylor. If you live in the district, please vote for Heath Shuler.
If you have some spare change you're willing to contribute to a campaign for someone who will work positively to make North Carolina and America a better place to live... go to the next paragraph.
Larry Kissell was not the DCCC candidate. He's a genuine grassroots candidate with an independent mind of his own. He doesn't plan to go to Congress to take orders from an authoritarian nitwit like Rahm Emanuel or anyone else.
The DCCC candidate withdrew from the primary and the district rallied behind Kissell, who's very different from Robin Hayes-- and far better suited for the 8th CD. A 27-year veteran of the textile industry, a social studies teacher and a deacon of the First Baptist Church, Kissell's website leaves nothing to guess work on how he feels-- and what he wants to do about -- all the major issues facing North Carolina citizens.
When Kissell talks about "values," it isn't empty rhetoric crafted to hoodwink strangers into voting for him. Kissell's Main Street values (not Wall Street values) are what informs and drives his desire to help his neighbors and his nation to do better.
This is not some right of center Democrat who will go to Washington and cause progressives to tear their hair out a la Lieberman or Zell Miller or Henry Cuellar. On the other hand, Inside-the-Beltway elitists like Emanuel are already tearing out their hair, reading stuff like "We staged our way into Iraq in one year, there is no reason we can't stage our way out in one year. My position is out of Iraq by the end of 2006."
Reading Kissell's detailed, straight-forward essays on why he's running and what he plans to do in Washington make you feel this is truly a good man-- not an ambitious politician-- and one who you know you could trust to make the right decisions for his neighbors and for us all. You don't have to vote for Larry Kissell just because he's better than the Republican; you can vote for him because he'll make a great legislator imbued with compassion, strength, humility and wisdom.
I suspect any assistance the DCCC plans to put into North Carolina between now and November will go entirely to Heath Shuler. That leaves Larry Kissell to depend on plain, ordinary citizens who believe in the promise of a better society. If you live in the district you can volunteer here. If you want to be part of a coast to coast movement of people contributing $5 and $10 and $20 increments to buy into an American dream of the "ordinary people" who are the backbone of this nation, putting their collective foot down to Bush and his rubber stamp congressmen (and to Democrats cut from the same cloth), please click here on the DWT ACT BLUE Page.
Firedoglake is very proud this morning to be able to open up a dialogue between our community and Larry Kissell, who is at his computer at the North Carolina Democrat State Convention right now. You can address questions to Larry or to Howie (or to anyone else-- although no one can guarantee that anyone else will respond.)
Oh-- and one more thing-- I asked Steve in Larry's campaign office what music Larry likes and he told me he's a fan of both classic rock and country. A Firedoglake admirer at Warner Bros has donated a couple of brand new, just released Willie Nelson boxsets, THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC SESSIONS, and 20 copies of ME AND MR. JOHNSON, Eric Clapton's incredible tribute to one of his musical heroes, Robert Johnson. The first 20 contributors to Larry on the ACT BLUE Page get the Clapton CDs and the 2 Willie boxsets aren't tied to money, just to ideas and comments. (Pach and Christy are going to help Howie figure out who to send them to...)

Howie — thanks SO much for another great article. :) And for setting up a dialogue with Larry.
Larry’s at the North Carolina State Democratic Party convention and he’ll be joining us in a few minutes (hopefully). Meanwhile I wanted to get the ball rolling with a general kind of question. Usually I just try to answer questions here every Saturday but I want to pose one. Pach introduced me to a friend of his in Germany this morning to talk about how to best help some Democratic candidates. I want to share what I wrote back with him and ask you guys how you feel about it and how it applies in your own area. I have a vague notion about how progressives should look at Democratic candidates in general elections (so, post-primary). Worst case scenario: a deep red district with a neo-Nazi incumbent Republican with a voting score hovering around zero and a Democratic Party challenger– a former Republican himself, perhaps– recruited by the DCCC who is violently opposed to women’s choice, thinks gay marriage is identical to a man marrying his poodle, and has a consistent record of always supporting Big Business interests over consumer and worker interests. But he will vote for Nancy Pelosi to be House Speaker. The most I would feel good about is encouraging progressives to hold their nose and voting for him. The other side of the spectrum: a blue-leaning district with an out-of-touch reactionary Republican incumbent being challenged by a grassroots populist who has beaten back the DCCC/DLC challenger in the primary and is committed to a broad progresive agenda. In my scenario, here’s where we go to the wall and get the national netroots and grassroots involved. In between these two poles, there is a lot of grey.
It’s tough to call Cabarrus County a “swing” district. Hopefully there will be some “yellow dog” Dems who’ll come out, and some GOoPers who will stay home.
I’m going to contribute to Larry, but not for the cds–he’s a fellow Tar Heel.
Hayes is most famous for breaking down and weeping like a baby after DeLay, Blunt and other Republicans forced him, on the floor of the House, to vote against his constituents interests to break a 214-214 tie for some hideous trade policies that wreaked further havoc and despair on North Carolina’s textile industry.
Howie, do you or anyone else have any more detail on this, and whether Kissell’s campaign is running with it (I notice he’s a 27-year textile veteran)? It sounds too juicy to be relegated to a single sentence.
Eli, it’s actually a very famous incident and Larry’s campaign has been using it. Alas, Hayes has been re-elected since this grotesque incident happened, so alone, it’s not going to do the trick.
I’ve got people near Catawba, in Sherrill’s Ford. I can vouch firsthand how the closing of the textile plant was devastating. Just like when I was a kid growing up in Yancey County.
These are people, however, completely capable of voting against their own economic self-interest.
These are people, however, completely capable of voting against their own economic self-interest.
Can you say “minimum wage”?
For most creative kid-naming in the political arena, Heath and Nikol Shuler win hands-down. Their kids are named Navy and Island.
tommy yum- why would they vote against their own economic self-interest? Are there other matters more over-riding? Or have the issues not been framed properly for them? What do you think?
TeddySanFran, do you think Heath and Nikol are hippies???? Should we ask Cartman? And maybe it comes from her family. I mean someone decided to spell her first name like that!
Simply put, Howie, it’s the culture war. My mother-in-law recently confided that she thought the war in Iraq was a mistake, but in ‘04 declared she’d never vote for Kerry because she “hated New England liberals” and because he faked his war record.
They know the Bushies have fucked everything up, but they haven’t stopped watching Fox.
Howie, I was wondering; did Heath Schuler have a burning desire to be a politician, or was it more a case of his being recruited based on name recognition? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, yes there is, but unfortunately it’s a fact of political life in the mass entertainment age.
Howie — excuse the interruption for a brief announcement from the sponsors:
Regarding posts, moderating, and the vast amount of work it takes to keep this blog running smoothly:
Sometimes your IP addy can get caught in the SPAM filter if it is similar or identical to someone who has been a troll or who has been spamming the list with adverts. I really wish everyone would stop taking the SPAM filter stuff personally. We work as quickly as we can to clear things out — honestly we do — and it is set up to keep our threads as a conversation, and not some massive, brawling yawp of adverts and name-calling and crap.
If a post disappears or is labeled as “moderation” — what that means is that it is trapped in the SPAM filter, when we see it we’ll check it for spam and, if it’s fine, we immediately set it free. Please, EVERYONE — the folks who help us out with moderation do so voluntarily, out of the goodness of their hearts, to keep our community running as smoothly as it does. I could not have survived the last week without all of them, and they deserve not just my thanks, but everyone’s considering the crap we’ve had to deal with this week (read: trolls in the condolences thread, etc.).
All this to say, patience would go a long, long way this weekend — as everyone at the Service Desk has had a long, long week and we are all bone weary. Thanks.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming of butt-kicking politics…
Oh, and Howie — I hope you like the picture. I spotted this one and loved it at first sight. :)
tommy yum- why would they vote against their own economic self-interest? Are there other matters more over-riding? Or have the issues not been framed properly for them? What do you think?
My take on it is that it’s both. The media doesn’t tell them they’re being screwed, or misleads them about where the screwing is coming from (Scary Mexicans Taking Our Jobs!), while the Republicans paint the Democrats as cowardly enemies of God, Mom, apple pie, marriage, Christmas, Freedom, and our brave troops, who would be totally devastated and demoralized if we “cut and run”.
Spot on, Eli.
Howie, I was wondering; did Heath Schuler have a burning desire to be a politician, or was it more a case of his being recruited based on name recognition? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, yes there is, but unfortunately it’s a fact of political life in the mass entertainment age.
Bob Casey Jr. (generally useless pro-life, DLC son of popular late governor Bob Casey) is pretty much according to the exact same formula.
I guess the Dems figured that if Dubya can get elected based on name recognition and some dubious charisma along, they might as well give it a shot too.
Welcome, Larry Kissell and Howie Klein. Got any good recipes?
op99, I know both parties tried recruiting Heath and he finally went with the North Carolina Dems (instead of the Tennessee Republicans). Maybe Larry will know more about the specifics when he gets here.
Howie, Larry,
I’d love to talk about NC a little. My impression is that we’re poised to turn blue. Asheville is growing by leaps and bounds and is quite liberal. Obviously, Chapel Hill is as well. I live in Chatham County, which is undergoing a massive displacement of Dixiecrats and has some strong grassroots organizations.
“Down East” is still a problem, unless Wilmington is doing something I’m not aware of.
What are your thoughts about seeing some electoral Carolina blue?
punaise, I used to be a chef when I was living in Amsterdam– long time ago– but now I only prepare raw food. If there are any raw foodists in the community I’d be happy to share my recipe, via e-mail, for chocolate truffles (based on pure Ecuadorian chocolate and, of course, no sugar or chemical substitutes). And Christy– I love that picture you used too!
May I suggest that the box sets go to two of our volunteer moderators? Having done three days of this in the old, pre-Wordpress days, and then briefly peeked behind the curtain since the transition, I can attest that it ain’t easy.
We don’t usually see the effect of the assist these folks provide, and I’ve no idea if the box sets align with their musical taste, but strictly volunteer work, especially this week, shouldn’t be its own reward. Troll-sweeping and spam-filtering has been a much bigger task, since YKos, the Kosphone silliness, and (ugh!) the slugs who appeared on the Sorrow post. So, I’d nominate our volunteer moderators to receive the Willie Nelson boxes….
Do progressives candidates get enough face time in the local media?
Time to get their views heard?
what TSF said at 24
Ned Lamont v joementum things is getting national attention and this would help Ned get heard. I wonder how can you get more attention so voters have a chance to see what’s at stake?
tommy yum, I’m eager to hear what Larry will have to say about this too. In my research for this piece I came to the same conclusion you did– NC is going to turn a bit bluer, let’s call it purple, in November. I believe both Larry and Heath are going to win their races, giving the Democrats a majority in the state congressional caucus. And in 2 years Dole’s seat is up and I think she is universally viewed as a major disappointment so it’ll be interesting to see who the Democrats come up with. The state party is excellent, with a Dean-like party chair, and there’s a strengthening and growing grassroots in the state. Hopefully Shumer will keep his nose out of NC and not try to impose some needlessly pro-corporate shill.
Isn’t Charlie Taylor the NC Republican who held up the funding for the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, on the grounds that providing federal seed money might hurt the efforts to raise private cash?
If so, can’t Larry make an argument that the Congressman hates our American heroes who saved the White House from certain destruction on 9/11/01?
Howie - I was being mildly facetious about the recipes, given the carry-over sentiments from the previous thread. IIRC there are some good raw restaurants in the SF BAy Area, but the names escape me.
Corportions have a way of controlling things don’t they? The dems can’t really go progressive until and unless shumer and emanual are sent to do something other than win elections for the dems.
Eli @ 6
Larry has quote Robin Hayes as saying he was “flat out horizontally opposed to CAFTA”. He is definately using the Fast track and CAFTA votes to his advantage.
I finally had to leave the convention. The wireless signal was coming through, but I couldn’t access it….not important enough to have the code ;)
I’m in the lobby of the Radisson where other meetings for the convention were held earlier today.
I will definitely be holding my nose as I vote for Heath Shuler. I disagree with almost all of his positions. He’s pro-life, anti-gay and virulently anti-immigrant. On the other side, he’s not Charles Taylor.
I don’t think everyone realizes the gravity of what i am going to say
there is no way we win controll of either houses if there is electronic voting
this is a fact
I’m pleased to help out this fine gentleman. Keep up the good work, Howie.
Of course people can vote against their economic self interest. I do so every time I vote for a school bond proposal even though I’m child free.
Yes, there are long term benefits that will accrue to me with a better educated populace, I don’t think I need to list them. I fear that this is an abstraction that requires a reasoned outlook which is the opposite of the gut level reactions of those who blindly follow the Reverend Billy Bob who assures them that the Lord will provide if they just keep the faith.
teddy and punaise (and Christy), have the 2 volunteer moderators e-mail me and I’ll find out what they like. I got a boxful of boxsets this week as giveaways and there’s no need to give anyone a Willie Nelson box when they would rather have New Order, Gram Parsons, The Pogues or a box of Broadway musicals.
Hi gang! This is Larry Kissell, Democratic nominee in North Carolina’s 8th District, checking in from the NC Democratic Convention. My thanks to Howie for highlighting this important race and all the folks at Firedoglake for having me.
As you know, this is not only a pivotal race, but a winnable one. Attention just like this and good people like yourselves are making the difference.
I’m honored to be with you today.
Hi Larry, and welcome!
Larry… where do you stand in the polling at this point?
What jobs are replacing those lost textile jobs? I know there must be a lot more financial sector jobs in NC, since Charlotte stole our Bank of America, but are jobs are being created in North Carolina to replace those working-class jobs that lifted folks from the farm to the mill?
DefJef @ 25
The local press (Charlotte Observer for me) is much like the national traditional media…likely to take out their steno pad for the likes of Robin Hayes.
Recently, though, they have been giving Larry’s quotes more weight and more space. The most recent example may already be behind the firewall. I’ll double check.
Welcome, Larry — thanks so much for joining us at FDL on a very busy day for you!
Aside from sending money is there anything out of staters can do to help you Larry?
Hi Larry!
Larry, would you mind giving us your “pitch?” What are the big issues in your district, and how can you unseat your entrenched opposition?
Hi Larry and Howie, I just tried out the Act Blue thing for the first time. Feels good!
Hey Larry, are you getting support from the DCCC?
Tommy (comment #22), we’re seeing excitement from all over the state for our campaign. This really is the year North Carolina’s 8th District goes back to blue. We’ve got a democratic advantage in registration, we’ve got the issues and we’ve got the momentum.
I appreciate your support.
Welcome Larry, we’re really glad to have you join us. As you see, there are a dozen excellent questions for you above.
And the grand dame of political discourse on drug-store cowboyism, and eminent Republican saddle burr, Helen Thomas, speaks the truth once more.
http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0623-21.htm
If only the Demos and Senator Hillary, (it’s all about me), Clinton would consult Ms. Thomas on the right way to proceed toward victory in ‘08.
Hi Betsy! Very nice to see you here.
Def Jef, I see a couple questions from you I’d like to answer. The polling we did a couple weeks ago was great news for Democrats. Even with our incumbent’s high name recognition, he can’t garner above 50% support. My favorite number though would be the infromed vote, where I lead by 7 points.
To answer your other question, of course financial support is critical, especially with the June 30th reporting deadline upon us, but folks from all over can help in many ways. Letters to the editor. Blogging. Voting in on-line polls. And efforts just like this help get the word out and keep the focus on taking back the house.
Be sure to go to our website www.LarryKissell.com to sign up for our newsletter and we’ll get you our action alerts.
Larry,
What do you see as three most important issues you see in your district?
Have you received endorsements by your local DFA and/or PDA groups?
Do you post diaries on kos?
Larry, do you have many volunteers in Mecklenburg County? Do you have a GOTV team? I ask, as I will visit my mother this summer, and I am wondering what I can do to help.
Thank you kind commenters about the volunteer moderators — it was a rough week here. I must gratefully decline the kind offer of CDs — for me, it’d be like bringing yellowcake to Iraq. The first record I ever bought at 9yo was a 10″ LP of Wagner — by now I have well over 3000 CDs, all classical. Yes, nowadays I am buying SACDs and with Bittorrent serendipitously filling lacunae in my library, I have quite a surfeit … but I thank you-all nevertheless!
no Nat King Coles to Newcastle for *ilson….
I would like to know how Larry Kissel feels about the claim of Bush and his advisors, such as Gonzalez, that he has unlimited executive powers as long as we are at “war” and can freely disregard and violate any law passed by Congress that he feels is inconsistent with unlimited executive power. And how Larry feels about the Rubber Stamp Congress letting him get away with it by refusing to exercise its checks and balances under the Constitution. This is a crucial issue. Are people in North Carolina aware of it?
The convention is busy, so I’ll try to help fill in a little. This district is ripe for the taking this year. I wrote a little about what is different this year in a post a week ago. http://thesoutherndem.blogspot.....y-are.html
Larry is an 8th district Democrat. He’s a deacon at his church and a 27 year veteran of the textile industry. He speaks the voters’ language.
Jim (#47), I had a very successful trip to Washington last week. Congressman Brad Miller hosted a breakfast fundraiser for me. The entire NC delegation is a great group. Everyone was pleasantly suprised to see Congressman Rahm Emanuel show up. I was most pleased with his commitment of support for our efforts. The DCCC recognizes what we’ve known all along. We’re going to win in November.
why would they vote against their own economic self-interest?
Short answer — they don’t.
Many Working Class Americans believe that neither political party gives a damn about them, and they might as well vote (if they vote at all) for the GOoPers who at least pretend to share their conservative social values.
Between the GOP K-Street Crooks and the Davos Democrats, both parties have sold out working Americans. Illegal immigration has become a huge problem because NAFTA has destroyed the Mexican Economy.
NAFTA and CAFTA and GATT are con jobs, designed to benefit multi-national corporations and the investor class — everyone else will join the serf class, that serves to profit those at the top.
Until the Democrats figure out that Wall Street politics benefits Wall Street to the detriment of everyone else, working class America will continue to vote against them at the polls.
This is why I have hope for John Edwards. Although he is still something of a golden boy, his mill worker heritage should give him an insight working class America.
We need a New Deal for the 21st Century . . .
We need a 21st Century FDR . . .
Excellent! I’m sending a little financial love your way from the 11th district :)
Larry, will Beth Troutman make an appearance on your behalf? Will you enlist her support?
ck - great answer…much better than I was able to formulate.
I agree, ck. Traditional Dem support blocs like the unions have been cut off at the knees. The Dems need to reassert themselves, strongly, as the populist, working-class party they once were. Before the feudal system comes to fruition.
Kenneth, Beth Troutman is a FOX newscaster in Charlotte now, so her hands might be tied. I’m not Larry, but saw the question.
Hi Howie,
Do you have any thoughts on NC-05, incumbent Virginia Foxx (R)?
I want to welcome you larry, but I want you to know just recently a democrats votes were not counted, I forget which, but only a week or so ago.
we cannot win a mojority unless we get rid of electronic voting and unless we insure equal availablity to our voter blocks
Kenneth,
Larry has garnered a lot of support in Mecklenburg County. There are many opportunities to help, and we always welcome volunteers.
Please feel free to e-mail me at MegMRorie@yahoo.com for more information on volunteer opportunities.
1,191 DAYS AND THE KILLING GOES ON AND ON AND…
Howie Kein @ #4:
This question is a good one and I need some help with it myOWN self. First of all, I think that an issue like the right to choose is so fundememntal to our politics and so indicitive of other values that are fundemental to our democracy that I don’t think that we should waste our votes supporting “prolife” Democratic candidates unless we have a firm commitment from them on other issues like supreme court nominees, the right to privacy, the rights of the individual vrs the state, the sanctity of the Bill of Rights at all times, environmental protection, voting rights….
It seems to me that with regard to positions that are not only anathema to democratic values but are unpopular with majority Americans, it makes much more political sense to take down the Democatic candidate and leave the Repuplican in office holding and defending unpopular views. Eventually, when weight of the majority overwhelms the party supporting minority positions, it will make it easier for the mass of voters to “throw the bums out” without throwin a few babies too.
We are , at the moment, in a battle not jest for the future of our democracy, but for the existance of the Democratic Party as the vehicle for that democracy…I am all for a big tent but there needs ta be threshold, a “litmus test” if you will, that identifies cariers of terminal infections or we will end up savin a corpse.
KEEP THE FAITH AND REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM!!!
Katy (#52), thanks for that question. What folks in my district talk about are the kitchen table issues that impact their daily lives. They want a Congressman willing to stop all the bad trade deals ruining our economy, a strong advocate of education and something finally done about high energy costs with a significant investment in alternative energy.
Guys, there’s so many good questions here. Please forgive me if I fall behind. I’ll try to answer a few more before I have to get back to the convention. I just really appreciate this opportunity so much.
Cozumel (#65), Virginia Foxx is so far to the right that she obviously has a severe mental problem that goes way beyond politics. Her voting record is way to the right of Tom DeLay’s. She is the most extremist congressperson from North Carolina– by far– and she is the 9th most fanatical right wing loon in the entire GOP caucus! The closest person I could compare her to– voting-wise– is Mean Jean Schmidt (OH-02). Maybe Larry can tell us something about Roger Sharpe, her Democratic opponent. He lists no issues or positions on his website.
One more thought — what is good for Working Class Americans is also good for Wall Street.
The race-to-the-bottom short-term-profits-above-all is not sustainable economics. When all of the good jobs have left America, who’s going to by the widgets that Wall Street Corporations peddle?
Just as FDR and the New Deal Democrats saved Wall Street from itself, we need a rebirth of Democratic Working Class Populism, to save the country from the corporate greed heads that have taken over our government.
With an economy base on jobs that pay a living wage, everyone prospers in the long term. With a short term profit economy, everyone will suffer in the long term.
Roger Sharpe received a huge, rousing round of applause today at the convention, so the Democrats in his district are fired up. I imagine they would have to be with Foxx as their Rep.
Okay, Howie, I’m convinced! Your ActBlue Kissell tipjar’s got a little bit more in it from me. Thanks, Larry, for showing up to answer questions on a busy day for you, and to B.Muse for pinch-hitting from the convention as well.
Howie, one suggestion: I obviously got confused, asking Larry about Charlie Taylor, when Robin Hayes is his opponent. Could I recommend focusing each post on one Howie Dem? While I’m sure Heath Shuler appreciates the publicity, Larry’s who we want to really help, right? Just an idea from an easily confused but heartily enthusiastic Kissell contributor!
========
Had Enough?
========
Thanks, Howie
“Maybe Larry can tell us something about Roger Sharpe, her Democratic opponent. He lists no issues or positions on his website.”
I’m going to check it out.
B, Muse, is Sharpe more like Larry or more like Heath (issueswise)?
Tommy (#45), I think our slogan sums up why we’re winning most of all.
Someone Working…For a Change.
NorskeFlamethrower, I will take the other side of the argument. Just consider what happened in 2000. People who thought (in some cases, correctly) that there was little difference between the Republicans and Democrats voted for Nader.
Six years later, we have a quagmire in Iraq, Alito for life (for death, really), etc. If the Democrats control even one part of Congress, we can at least have investigations of matters from pre war Iraq intelligence to domestic spying.
Otherwise, we got nothing, and no promise that this march into kleptocracy will ever be reversed.
I think he’s more like Larry. The only issue I’m not 100% on is Choice. I will find out once I go back to the convention floor and email you if the thread is no longer going.
Guys, Howie, THANK YOU for doing this. I really appreciate it. They’re pulling me back into the convention, but I really enjoyed getting to spend some time with everyone.
Good people are the same all over. We want change, we want what’s right, and we will do together this November. Thank you!
ck,
I am with you on all, but I suppose the overarchy strategy is first to win enough power … kinda stealthy.. and perhaps some progressive ideas can be heard.
You can’t run against city hall and wall street when they control everything. You need to win at their game and then maybe, just maybe you can change things.
So you have to hold your nose and vote for some unsavory demoncrats in the near term. Most of them seem to be rather “compromised” at least from their voting and public positions.
Thank you for fighting for us, Larry.
Wow, Larry, that kind of sums up the progressive movement:
Good people are the same all over.
Thanks for that thought, and best of luck in your campaign!
Larry.. Thanks and good luck… we need good people for the people
I realize that most of us support a woman’s reproductive rights. Please understand that there are areas of many southern states that hinge on these issues and a true progressive candidate will not win in these areas. It’s sad, but true in the eastern and western portions of North Carolina.
I want to elect Democrats first and will work my fingers off to then try to elect progressive Democrats as we turn our state blue.
Fortunately, most of the 8th Congressional District (Larry’s) is in the Piedmont, which is more progressive friendly.
Larry,
I hope folks reading this from outside the district understand that even here, in Robin Hayes’ hometown of Concord (which he normally wins huge) folks are very excited about you and your bumper stickers are everywhere here! I’ve seen candidates come and go agaist Hayes and they have all needed various kinds of help. Larry, you are the first candidate ever whose only problem was money. We all know that with enough of us coming together. We can fix that and send Robin Hayes packing! I hope everyone gives generously.
Glad to see you now have PayPal for giving too! Have a great day. Go Larry Go!
B. Muse, I would love the e-mail and people will be reading this thread all weekend so post it here too. Foxx is so really terrible that I’m sure we’d all like to feel comfortable supporting her opponent for a positive reason (as well as for the obvious). Alas the district is DEEP DEEP DEEP red. Bush took it by 66% both times.
I really hope somebody from Larry’s staff is still online and monitoring our questions. I would really like an answer to my No. 56 (12:02 p.m.) on executive power. I would be willing to send a copy of Glenn Greenwald’s How Would A Patriot Act? to Larry if he or a trusted staff member would promise to read it.
“Campaign-finance filings for Foxx and Sharpe show that Sharpe has raised less than $5,000 to Foxx’s net balance of about $600,000.”

Ugggg
B Muse. I understand all too well. Having worked my ass off for Patsy Keever, a true progressive who I believe would have been an incredible representative.
I realize that either Shuler or Taylor will be my representative and given that choice I will vote for Shuler. I don’t see myself knocking on doors however trying to make a case for Shuler’s politics. I hope the conservative dems are ready to GOTV.
Larry made a contr….go get em’
OT….Raw Story says Brooks column tomm. slams Kos and call him “kingpin”….Rover has her minions working overtime…..
Mel Watt will be speaking soon. I met his campaign manager earlier. He worked so hard on the Voting Rights Act and was very proud of what they had accomplished. I know this has been a hard week for him. I want to be at the convention to cheer him on and thank him for his hard work.
Thank you all for taking notice of my red state and one of our most promising candidates. I can’t begin to tell you how it helps to keep us all motivated knowing that there are people across the country who haven’t given up on the south. It’s tough being a Democrat in a red state - and we have a blue state legilature and governor’s mansion! I can’t imagine living in a totally red state. Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Larry –
A thought to take with you as you campaign.
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer said:
Values Unite — Issues Divide
My own take is that “specificity kills campaigns.”
Talking about how we need change and good jobs and to restore our sense of community are value based themes, that everyone can agree with.
Talking about legislative specifics of reforming NAFTA and CAFTA puts the audience to sleep, and opens counter-attack opportunities for your opponent. Issue specificity kills.
George Bush “won” in 2000 with the over-arching theme of “Compassionate Conservative.” All of his other positions were sub-sets that supported the main theme. It was all a con, of course — but it worked.
Al Gore lost because his campaign lacked an over-arching theme, and when he found one — “The People vs The Powerful” — he used it inconsistently, and did not weave supporting sub narratives into the over-arching theme.
Good Luck — Go Get ‘Em, Tiger!!!

if the thunderdontgetcha:
I don’t think that the Nader voters that cost the election in Florida are examples of informed voters voting on fundamental values….they thought they were but they weren’t. Furthermore, the 2000 election is a good example of voter suppression (folks digusted out of votin’) and many of the remaining voters voting against their core values in support of values that are not central to democracy. And that’s my point, friend, we need to stand for sumpthin that folks ken identify and juxtapose to the fascist false values. It’s easy, our fundamental values will NOT keep out anyone who believes in the existing Bill of Rights.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THEY’LL BE COMIN ‘ FROM ALL SIDES!!!
ck - actually YOU’re the person I keep quoting. This race WILL be won on values.
Thanks again everyone!
ck,
I like how your gray matter works!
How many elections much people go to the polls, hold there nose and vote before they.. we see some movement of the pendulum?
Bush won in Foxx’s district by 66.6 percent? shouldn’t that tell the fundies something?
Good catch, *!
LOL Wilson
Seen any ominous-looking horsemen lately?
Sorry I meant *ilson
I also want to add that ActBlue is operating much better than had been reported in previous weeks. Perhaps that’s due to lower traffic, which would be a bad thing, but probably those ActBlue folks paid attention to the issues raised!
TeddySanFran at 101 — I was told by the ActBlue folks at YKos that they have done some upgrading in their systems. Looks like they have done a good job with it. :)
CSpan2 will be carrying a booksigning by Al Gore tomorrow at 7pm…
Shoot. I made an actblue contribution for Kissell but forgot to leave a little note about being from firedoglake. Donation made 3:50est, northern Virginia.
All I can do right now is drink a Pina Colada.
