There is no "War on Terror."
There is, however, a "war" on the U. S. Constitution.
After September 11, 2001, we've learned that we can take a punch and move on. We've faced far worse threats to our national survival in our history - the Civil War, the War of 1812, World War II to name a few - but we never abandoned our Constitution. Until now.
Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A "War on Terror" is therefore a war on humanity. The Bush administration has exploited the fear and shock of a nation in the wake of a surprising and dramatic act of violence to whip national fear and paranoia into a constant boil. Why?
The evidence suggests the whole point has been to seize power and steal money. We are witnessing a creeping coup in the United States, the overthrow of the idea, promulgated by our founders and by writers like Tom Paine, that the "Law is King:"
But where says some is the king of America? I'll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal of Britain. Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the king is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is.
The Bush administration has explicitly denied this, claiming unlimited executive power under the president's war powers against civilians and citizens. The president is not your "Commader in Chief" if you do not serve in the armed forces. On the contrary, he works for you, and he works for your representatives in the Congress.
There is no "War on Terror." There is only a war on the law, a conscious destruction of the U. S. Constitution. This is not the first time right wing interests have attempted to overthrow the U. S. government. An attempt was thwarted during the FDR administration. Then as now, America's greatest enemies come from among the ranks of America's ruling master class.
Bushco has enslaved Americans into a psychological reign of "War on Terror" that amounts to a criminal protection racket. We are told we must be afraid. That is, we are told we must live in terror. This is to protect us from. . . terror. Then, because we feel terrified, we must give up our freedom - freedom to write what we believe without fear of reprisal, freedom of due process and habeas corpus protection, freedom from secret intrusion into our private lives by government.
Today is Memorial Day. Today we remember countless patriots who died and fought for those freedoms our president tells us we must abandon. . . in the name of "freedom."
If there were really a "War on Terror," an emotion, Wes Craven would be hiring a lawyer: he scares people. The "War on Terror" is a sham. You know what changed after September 11th? We, the people of the United States, forgot how strong we are. We gave in to fear, when the only thing we should have feared was fear itself. Osama bin Laden wants you to be afraid. So does George Bush.
I know I'm not alone when I say, I'm an American and I'm not afraid. I know I'm going to die. I accept that I'm going to die, no problem. What I do not accept and will not accept is the notion that I must live as a slave to fear for the purposes of craven, cowardly men who, in their time, pissed the bed rather than fight an actual war, later to become powerful and use that power to line their pockets with my tax dollars. Give me liberty or give me death. Take your "terror" and shove it.
We went after the criminals who attacked us when we invaded Afghanistan, then quickly abandoned any pretense of being concerned with actual terrorists by fighting a ginned-up war of aggression against a tin-pot dictator for whom our chickenshit president and his buddies have always had a hard-on. If the U. S. were serious about thwarting terrorism or about minimizing our exposure to acts of violence designed to make us afraid, we would have rigorous port security and massive international goodwill and cooperation in the lawful identification of anarchic, violent networks. But we don't have that. We have our sons and daughters fighting to maintain bases in the sand near oil fields, sacrificing their lives, bodies and minds for a pack of lies.
Ann Coulter and other right wing totalitarian cheerleaders like to talk about traitors to America. George Bush and the Republicans have betrayed America, the actual laws of America and the very idea of America. On Memorial Day, as we remember our sons and daughters who have sacrficed their lives in the blistering sands of Iraq, it does their memory due honor to point this out. Noble men and women fallen, their blood cries out for lawful justice.
In each of our minds lies the beginning of our return to freedom, so please, say it after me: "There is no 'War on Terror.'"
It's high time for America and Americans to remember our strength. We need not be afraid. When we surrender to fear, we lose our country, we lose our faith in each other, we lose our future and we lose our freedom. The best way to honor the sacrfices of our nation's men and women killed in battle is to embrace, once again, that precious liberty.
It's time to be America again.

love it. i wanna hear every Democratic candidate repeating this mantra over and over again. every time they get on the radio or TV or a magazine interview. this is what Americans are waiting to hear from their leaders.
Nice post pac
Agreed, but our Constitution has repeatedly been compromised in times of war or other hostilities- the Alien and Sedition Acts, Korematsu, McCarthy and the red scare. The lesson many of us draw from these incidents is that the compromise of our liberties actually undermines our cause, it doesn’t strengthen it.
But with the dingbat currently in charge, we have no reason to think he even knows of that history, let alone has learned from it. He’s providing the crowning example of how invading our civil liberties has made us less safe, not more. It has inflamed our society and sowed distrust. And it has made us think that the only way to be safe is to commit thousands of our young people to death and billions (trillions?) of dollars in ill-conceived foreign adventures. What a criminal waste of our country’s potential.
Bush just invoked the GWOT on sacred ground at Arlington Cemetery…for the millionth time. What a disaster.
He used September 11th yet again to justify everything.
Tyrant and liar and coward.

Thanks Pach!
I’m glad to finally start to hear some folks recognize that “woe is me” ain’t particularly useful,…that Bush and his band of criminal brothers have been pushing this meme of “fear” to monopolize all else,…and that buying into this meme is to surrender to the twisted, evil wishes of not Osama, but of Rummy, Darth Cheney and their pet monkey, the Chimp!
We have a FAILED foreign policy that is hubris- laden and unengaged (except at the end of a gun or bomb) and defiant and hypocritical and most profoundly stoopid.
thanks, Pach– great post.
help - didn’t Abu testify before the Judiciary Committee that we are not officially at war? IIRC, he did, and then said it was important to make the distinction.
I thought I heard him say that - thinking it strange that he then continued, and continues, to base all his legal sophistry on the powers of a war-time president.
I’d like to see a “Sense of the Congress” that this nation is not at war with Iraq, nor with a tactic.
If the Oklahoma City bombing was a crime, then so was 9-11 - it was not a declaration of war.
I’ll say it again — “YeeHaw is not a foreign policy.” Great post, Pach — lots to think about here. Here’s hoping a whole hell of a lot of people start doing some thinking. And soon.
Excellent post Pach. Paine’s quote rings so true. Oh to have leaders that know how to speak with such eloquence again! What, my friends, has become of this great nation? My heart aches for her.
C’mon Gore! Run man, run!
Gore v2.008: Upgrade America Today!
Actually, it takes a lot of courage to try to take over the stablest government of the wealthiest nation in history. They’re evil, but courageous. Bush & Cheney have to win, and keep the evidence hidden, or, as Lincoln said, be “lighted down in . . . dishonor until the last generation.” Those two may never do time, but a lot of their minions would. And they know it.
There’s an old saying — “If you would strike the king, be sure to kill him.” Because if you don’t, you’re dead meat. Substitute “Constitution” for “King.” They’ve burned their ships and staked everything — ask Ken Lay — on victory.
Which makes them more desperate in the months and years to come.
—-
PS. If your blood is simmering over my “they’re courageous” comment, remember Bill Maher.
Hooray for Pachacutec. Threw that one right over the plate. We been sold a bill of goods that would embarrass a siding salesman. It’s time to call B.S. on the whole sorry lot of them.
For several years I have been saying that ‘Terorism’ has been used to supplant ‘Commuinism’ as the Republican scare tactic (they tried to use homosexuality and abortion first but found terrorism a better choice since they could combine patriotism with it).
Finally, Mr. Bush has directly stated this point in his recent comments (see speech referring to Truman).
I have held this same view ever since The War Against Terror (TWAT) was declared. When I heard Pat Roberts actually say on the Senate floor,”You don’t need any civil rights when you’re dead%u2026″ I wept for the loss of America.
With phony, sniveling cowards running this country we have seen the expiration of the dreams of democracy, and the death of America’s former greatness in the name of cowardice, spurred by the abject fear Bushco and his Republican Guard have fostered.
I deliberately have chosen to always refer to Bush’s war as the above TWAT (The War Against Terror) to try and shame people into remembering that there are no barbarian hordes at our shores; no country dares attack us with nukes, because Mutually Assured Destruction WORKS, so it shouldn’t make a damn bit of difference who has nukes; and every action taken by Bushco and his Republican Guard have inured to the detriment of our freedom and safety. Our Constitution, that vibrant “living document” that has served us so well is now tattered, torn, and its destruction under Bushco and his Republican Guard is almost complete.
So any cowards that believe in Bush’s TWAT, go cower under your beds, stay home on election day (you might be attacked by terrorists!), and let all true Americans who believe in America and who realize our strength vote people into office that are not quivering, yellow-bellied, boot-licking, ass-kissing, sycophantic suck-ups like those in congress and this administration now.
We ARE a strong nation with people of great fortitude that has been co-opted by the very worst amongst us.
Great post.
Onward, F, G and F!
Memorial Day - Texas style! Reminds me of a favorite Onion article-

Jewish Texans Commemorate Holocaust… Texas-Style!
February 12, 1997 | Issue 31•05
LUBBOCK, TX—The West Texas chapter of B’nai B’rith is holding a month-long series of events in remembrance of the Holocaust, commemorating the 20th century’s darkest hour the way they do everything… Texas-style!
Texas Jews rustle up some memorial grub.
“If we do not remember the past, we are doomed to repeat it,” said San Antonio Rabbi Leonard “Too Tall” Sussman at Sunday’s opening ceremony, laying a wreath before the Lone Star Of David in front of B’nai B’rith headquarters in Lubbock. “The world was silent, and in silence lies complicity. Never again, y’hear?”
Added Sussman, “Yee-haw!” He then lit the ceremonial Eternal Flame, over which a spit will be installed for Wednesday’s kosher steer cookout.
Among the highlights of Holocaust Hoedown ‘97: a Main Street parade featuring red, white and blue Texas blossoms spelling out “Don’t Mess With The Jews”; a special appearance by six-time Zionist calf-roping champion Barry Lowenstein; and daily double-bill showings of Schindler’s List and John Wayne’s True Grit.
“Have we learned the lessons of the Holocaust?” asked Deborah Teitelbaum, director of Dallas’ Museum of the Holocaust. “If the answer is yes, then how does one explain events in such places as Cambodia and Bosnia? What do we tell the orphaned child in Rwanda? And how ’bout them Cowboys!”
Bill @ 26…
Well said patriot. Well said.
AAHHH Pacha,
that Paine quote is hanging in our bathroom - we wanted it where everyone coming in to our home would see it
we remind anyone still supporting GWB that their beloved Ronald Reagan had 8 years of the Soviet military aimed at him, subs filled with nukes staring at us everyday and never once admonished Americans t/b afraid - usually gets ‘em thinking
Great post Pachacutec !
Yes, there is no war on Terror….that is the biggest con of all. We all fell for it…..now it’s time to regain our sanity. The enemy lies within and it is GW Bush and friends.
The neocons have for a while now been able to successfully spin/deny that we humans, like it or not, have a social contract. They believe the illusion that a man can be an island and it is very sad for all of us because it is ugly and unloving. It is convenient for the selfish man to believe he is the lone hunter living or dying by his wits and balls alone. It is a fantasy. Every man’s success includes countless others, a fact the Limbaughs and Coulters ignore in their tiny tunnel vision. They are so desperate to puff up their loud, vulgar, and puny egos - adrenaline is all they’ve got to feel alive. Reminds me of a movie with Rod Stieger where he pushes his hand down onto a sharp spike just to feel something. ( he played a man that was emotionally numb) A social contract of love does not have to mean a loss of individuality. It recognizes that we are not seperate on one level. It enhances the best kind of individuality. For the right wingers to scream “socialist!” or “communist” when decent people want to pass the hat ( government programs) to provide help for others is just an excuse for hate, laziness, and numbness. The Bartletts and the Bushes want to be comfortable with their selfishness and laugh at those who struggle when they see others suffer. They think they are tough but they’re not. Love is all that is real.
today the Preznit even trotted out at Arlington the hackneyed “fightin’ ‘em over there so we done have to fight ‘em here” chestnut… whatta crock!
Pach, I agree, and have felt this way for a long time. I believe that most real Americans feel this way. I believe that because these thugs own the media, they think they can convince us to be afraid through repetition…yet, we’re on to them now. I’m with you all. I won’t stop speaking.
War and the constitution have never gotten along well. Lincoln suspended habeus corpus as I recall. The japanese internment was a fear inspired move sanctioned by the supreme court that would never have passed constitutional muster in a non war environment.
we know all this. Yet every day the Dems step off their short bus and fail to act. Some see and hear the evil, some even speak out. But I see little action. I suspect we are without a paddle up up shit creek…
The commander of Fort Lewis in Washington state wrote an article in yesterday’s Seattle Times, touching on this same theme, that America should be very afraid of the enemy that is out there prepared to do harm to America. Lt. Gen. James Dubik warned that the intent of the enemy is the “eroding [of] our national will”. But the general was able to reassure America that “there are soldiers, Marines, airmen` and sailors who are fighting this very day and this very night to prevent the enemy from achieving its political and ideological aims”. He also warned that “in a conflict where the erosion of your will is a major goal of our enemy, you are a soldier as well”.
These words by General Dubkin could have been taken straight from a 1950s newsreel, warning of how America was in constant danger fron the Commies. The last words that I had quoted from the good general seems to be a not too subtle attempt by him to echo what Ari Fleischer and Rumsfeld had said in the past: “Watch what you say, watch what you do”. Any attempt to question the policies of the government wil not be tolerated. If your neighbor dares to challenge the policies of this administration, inform on him or her and report that person to Homeland Security.
Instead of more eternal vigilance concerning the ever present War on Terror, what this country needs is less flag waving, nationalism, and hysteria and more people wiling to adopt the slogan: Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
markfromireland (17) — thanks for that link to Lt. Col Kwiatkowski (ret.). She tells it like it is; will patriots hear this call?
Pachacutec:
You mentioned that the blood shed by American soldiers in Iraq cries out for justice. This made me think of two things.
First, your reference to the blood of Abel is apt. (Adam and Eve’s children fought, and Cain killed Abel. God told Cain that Abel’s blood cries out against Cain and demands justice.) The ancient Israelites believed that blood shed on the ground actually cursed the ground and its inhabitants until that blood was requited. When a person is found slain between two villages, no murderer discovered, each town has to pay dearly to lift the curse from the ground.
Second, it occurs to me that an argument I have heard defending the Vietnam War and now this insane Iraq war, that we must stay because if we don’t the deaths of our soldiers have no meaning. However, you are correct that the meaning their deaths have is not to continue in a pointless, evil and destructive war — the meaning of their deaths is a cry out for justice — it obligates every one of us who hears that cry of the blood from the ground, to do something, to do a lot, to bring justice to the murderers, in this case, the Bush Administration.
OT
A good sign:
On a beautiful sunny saturday afternoon in New York City, the 5:40 pm showing of “An inconvenient truth” was sold out.
That was beautiful. And perfect for Memorial Day.
It’s impossible to steal this amount of money and resources without chaos, panic and fear. When the fear gets ratcheted up,people stop questioning what’s going on.When they even start questioning, more fear(which leads to hatred)and misinformation gets dumped our way,and it’s like the process of awakening has to start all over again.I think that’s why it’s taking so long for the public to get a clue, and why the right has dug their heels in so deeply-they’re the most scared and pitiful of all.
What people oughta be scared of is the economy crashing while a huge web of organized crime makes off with damned near everything. And I don’t just mean money and resources. If we’re fighting and angry and completely unable to trust each other, out of fear and frustration and hatred,it’s much easier for the wealthy and powerful to be fat and happy behind all their “security”.And Justice and Peace will never happen, ever.
It’s not that”it can’t happen here”,it IS happening here, and it has to stop.NOW.Every day that passes more damage occurs. We’ve been given no other choice but to fight back, with all we have. You can’t claim to be a Patriot and then sit back and allow the madness to continue. It’s either fight or run to a bunker and cry.I’ve cried enough in my life,it’s good catharsis, but it doesn’t change a thing.Besides,I’m too pissed off to be scared, lol. How DARE these bastards decide who’s life is more valuable and worthy?Where are their credentials to decide that? Well? I have yet to see one single reason why I should blindly trust Republicans,CEOs,or any other neocon enabler, not ONE.
Democracy isn’t something we have,it’s something we DO,and it’s past the time for the country to remember that again. We used to be taught it,now we’re encouraged and rewarded for being selfish, mean, destructively competitive, and hurting other people is even considered entertainment.I don’t think most people can even define civics and citizenship anymore, other than to say”I’m an American”.
Well shit, Pach, you sure nailed that one! For all CSPAN watchers, I have to point to a repeat this morning of a March 2 forum with Norman Mailer & his son John Buffalo Mailer. At 83 he is self admittedly deaf (but only to stupid questions I noticed) so he pretty well ran the hour. Of his many great analogies:
Missing from our national discourse after 9/11 was “Hey baby, suck it up!”
Having terorism in one’s life is not going away. Pay attention to the numbers, of the 3,000 killed on 9/11, look at the 40,000 killed on roadways, etc across America every year. Figure your chances and go out and live your life BUT TO GIVE AWAY A COUPLE OF HUNDRED YEARS OF LIFE WITH CIVIL LIBERTIES to overcome terrorism is just plain stupid.
Thanks for your post Pach, I only hope more Americans read it than play golf today.
Amen and well said, Pach.
It’s WOT alright, War OF Terror, and it’s aimed at the American Citizen.
everything flows from 9-11. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
Hey, Bill Arnett #26, stop dissing twats! A lot of us have them, y’know. I believe Bush’s is named Laura. *g*
On a more serious note, I wish someone in the Senate besides Russ Feingold would call Pat Roberts on his “civil liberties don’t do you any good if you’re dead” shit. The motto of New Hampshire is not “Live Free and You’ll Die.” If the Founders had had that attitude, our national anthem would be God Save the Queen. It is time, and past time, to take our country back, and Pach is right. We start by not being afraid.
Regarding our history, we have faced attempts to undermine our principles of government, and we have had our pockets picked by corruption. But I don’t think we’ve ever had as much of both as we do now with George the Turd (somebody else used this moniker in a recent post, and I’m stealing it, and encourage everyone to do the same).
Seems to me that the war in Iraq is running out of steam. Nothing is likely to happen this year- Bush is able to ride the “A new government will turn the corner” bullshit for the balance of 06. Next year is a different story. We’ll be in our fifth year of non-decisive combat and death. Americans will have had enough of the wishful thinking and false promises. It will be increasingly difficult to hold back the tide of americans who say “enough- if Iraqis want democracy- they’ll have to fight for it themselves.”
Bush will go to his fallback position- removing most american troops to heavily armed bases and engaging the “enemy” primarilly with air strikes.
Of course in the end, it’s about the oil- so we won’t EVER see a total withdrawal. We are likely to see the very confusing picture of a civil war going on with american planes bombing both sides and american troops sitting the thing out for the most part- guarding the oil fields.
I heard somewhere Bush doesn’t like all the ugliness on TeeVee.
Well, thanks to some roadside bombers, there are three CBS folks fewer to bring it to him; 2 dead, one in critical condition.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories.....1815.shtml
Oh, Pachacutec, how I needed this! I just finished my Memorial Day post http://blogolodeon.blogspot.co.....l-day.html and was feeling pretty blue about things.
It’s too easy to give up, and I do want to stop giving up. Yes:
There is no war on terror.
There is no war on terror.
There is no war on terror.
But we won’t get home again just by clicking our heels together. In the immortal words of Jonathan Winters, “we’ve got to get organized.” Thank the gods for Firedoglake and other 21st century pamphleteers. I still don’t know if I believe in The American People anymore — but I want to.
This excellent essay deserves to be printed on the front page of every newspaper in America. And read by cranky Jack Cafferty on-air to a grimacing Blitzer. And probably, to reach the other 9/10 of TV viewers, presented and read by Brangelina during a commercial break in an American Idol episode.
Bravo!
Yeah Bush complains constantly about the scenes of death and killing on the teevee- only one problem with that- THERE ARE NO SUCH SCENES ON TEEVEE. The press is never around at the time one of the bombs goes off. Bush MADE THE WHOLE THING UP! Why? Beats the hell out of me!
“The president is not your “Commader in Chief” if you do not serve in the armed forces. On the contrary, he works for you, and he works for your representatives in the Congress.”
Very elegant and directly on point. This is but one of many gems in this post. A superb post Pach!!! Why does it take so much effort for our congresscritters to begin to realize what we here at FDL (and other blogs) have known all along? This administration is at “war” with its own citizens!
Good morning, kind folks.
I just want to extend my greetings to you wonderful people on this somber day. I really can’t think of anything to add to the comments already made. The only thought that crosses my mind is that Bush’s best hope for the judgment of history will be that he was a brain-damaged wreck who had literally lost his faculty for empathy and reflection, so that the greater blame lies on those close to him who manipulated his silly mind, and those further away who voted for him, knowing full well he was not up the grade.
“Of course the people don’t want war. But after all, it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.”
– Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
Hear Gore roar January 16, 2006 speech: (audio at http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....235819/934 )
The founders of our country faced dire threats. If they failed in their endeavors, they would have been hung as traitors. The very existence of our country was at risk. Yet in the teeth of those dangers, they insisted on establishing the full Bill of Rights.
Is our Congress today in more danger than were their predecessors when the British army was marching on the Capitol?
(APPLAUSE)
Is the world more dangerous than when we faced an ideological enemy with tens of thousands of nuclear missiles ready to be launched on a moment’s notice to completely annihilate the country?
(APPLAUSE)
Is America really in more danger now than when we faced worldwide fascism on the march, when the last generation had to fight and win two world wars simultaneously?
It is simply an insult to those who came before us and sacrificed so much on our behalf to imply that we have more to be fearful of than they did.
(APPLAUSE)
And yet they faithfully protected our freedom and now it’s up to us to do the very same thing.
(APPLAUSE)
GORE: We have a duty as Americans to defend out citizens’ rights not only to life but also to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
(APPLAUSE)
It is therefore vital in our current circumstances that immediate steps be taken to safeguard our Constitution against the present danger posed by the intrusive overreaching on the part of the executive branch and the president’s apparent belief that he need not live under the rule of law.
I endorse the words of Bob Barr when he said, and I quote, “The president has dared the American people to do something about it. For the sake of the Constitution, I hope they will.”
Sorry.. dont’ know how the DP happened. I do like seeing my comment highlighted though!
Bill @ 26 — I think you’ve given us a Democratic talking point:
Bush and Cheney couldn’t have done what they’ve done without their Republican Guard.
#23-
I disagree with Bushco having the quality of courage. Narcissism is devoid of courage, but contains an abundance of evil.
What fear. Like the fear that would cause a Republican Congressman to run into an elevator and call the police after hearing a “noise” that he “thought” was gunfire?
The subseqeunt hub-bub caused the total lockdown of the nations’ Capitol and caused one staffer to a Republican Congressman to get shipped off in an ambulance due to a “panic attack”?
Out nation has never looked stronger.
Maybe the Presidents spokesman, Tony Snow can break down into tears again while describing the hardships that the Bush family is going through as they bravely lead the nation in the “war on terrrrra”.

Rayne you’re welcome. Sharon @ 48. Two not one two journalists are dead Paul Douglas and James Brolan they were “embedded” and with a patrol “humvee” blown inot the air and landed upsidedown btw. War and the constitution have never gotten along well. Lincoln suspended habeus corpus as I recall.
The Constitution provides for the suspension of habeas corpus: Article I section 9 paragraph 2: The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.
Pach - 60 — I would be honored!
Sharon, that story about the CBS reporters must be phony. The only “journalist” who leaves the comfort of a balcony in the Yellow Zone is Laura Ingraham.
Don’t buy the lefty propaganda, Iraq is like New York, only safer.

OT, and I don’t want to quote, but what is it about right wing men who can only engage Jane by making lewd suggestions? Are they all as stupid as Tacitus, and equally besotted with Jane?
Next time try flowers, guys.

Last paragraph, if you care to look.
I am just listening to MSNBC– at first the anchor face said it was the result of an IED.
Seconds, later she morphed it into a suicide bombing without missing a beat.
RIP.
We’ll never know– tis a war zone, over there.
“I’m an American and I’m not afraid.”
Let me add this: They cannot frighten me. They can only kill me.
It’s so damn ironic. We’ve got the swift boatin’, hypocrite, smirkin’, jerkin’, swaggerin’, murkin’, chicken hawk, draft avoidin’, Nam dodgen’ commando in chief, ginnin’ up his spiel in support of his illegal, murderous and totally immoral and phony war on terror. And on this most authentic holiday. This man has absolutely no shame. And he’s a war criminal to boot. To say our president is in-artful in his deception and full of baloney-brains, is an insult to all the baloney-brains the world over. Bush is a very, very cheap trick.
Frankly- thanks for the correction- I missed that.

Christy,
in the event you need a BWAAAHAA moment at some point today - possible spew warning - that quote in the 3rd paragraph - priceless

AMEN!
This simple truth must be spoken and understood.
It is the thread which holds together the entirety of wrong.
There is no war on terror.
The laws against murder, kidnapping, theft and destruction of public property are sufficient.
Failures of execution do not justify expansion of poser.
In fact they should be viewed as a primary impediment to expansion of power.
Get behind us if you are frightened, we’ll lead the way.

Throughout the period of military rule, the Chilean Supreme Court lent legitimacy to Pinochet’s military regime through symbolic actions, public speeches, and through its resolutions.
This Kos diary I wrote almost six months ago is worth reading for those who fail to realize that the law is ultimately nothing more than a tool that can be adapted to serve those in power.
Some of those who didn’t leave Chile in time and ended up in unmarked graves were lawyers who thought the law would protect them.
The law is what men say it is. Your evil is my good.

Josh Marshall has a pretty cogent explanation for the Denny Hastert flap over the FBI search warrant:
With all the debate about the warrant executed on Rep. Jefferson’s office, let’s not forget the context in which this stink arose.
Earlier this month, we found out that the Duke Cunningham case was expanding and that the Duke case investigators were requesting documents from Congress as part of their probe into the roles of other members of Congress. The response from the Hill was, in so many words, ‘No, You’re asking for too much stuff.’
That response came with Denny Hastert’s seal of approval.
As the Times described the back and forth on May 16th …
Justice Department investigators and lawyers for the House of Representatives are wrangling over a request by the department for Congressional committee documents related to its expanding inquiry into the bribery scheme that involved former Representative Randy Cunningham, a Republican Congressional official said Monday.
The United States attorney’s office in San Diego has asked for copies of ”tens of thousands” of documents from the House Appropriations and Intelligence Committees, the official said, as part of its inquiry into whether Mr. Cunningham illegally influenced the process the committees use to designate money for military projects.
But lawyers for the Republican-controlled House rebuffed the request as unreasonably broad, the official said, and asked the United States attorney’s office for a shorter list.
And who’s in the crosshairs in this expanded Cunningham investigation? “Several members” of the House Appropriations Committee reported the Times back on May 12th. And, in particular, Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
Denny Hastert knows what’s coming down the pike. He’s taking the opportunity of the Jefferson search warrant to float this specious constitutional argument and clip the investigators’ wings on the most politically favorable terms.
cbl at 70 — Oh, I’m already on that for this afternoon. *g* Thanks for the heads up, though.
Florida Rep. Tom Feeney(R-phone company rate hike champion, big player in the computerized vote rigging software scandal per Bradblog) gave a brief memorial day speech. Here’s the meat of it: First attack on US shores since 1812 was Nine elva, fighting terror, defending our nation, spreading our freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Its BS, but its a great theme for the rethugs. Its simple and easy. And it would be gauche flor anyone to raise hell at a Memorial Day service.
State rep Dorothy Hukill(R) was next. Surprisingly, she did not invoke Nine elva, but stuck with the memorial part and talked about her father’s ww2 service.
Hukill’s son, age 20, attends jr. college with plans to attend UF. I asked him if he plans to join the military. He was prepared for the question (His mother is up for reelection - he and his buddy wore Hukill t-shirts) and he said that he was considering the AF, in two years, after he finishes college. Then he scurried away, while inviting me to greet his mom. Pretty smart kid. I had asked him how he avoids the recruiters on campus. He tells them they have to wait two years. I’d guess that his momma coached him pretty good, being that the young fella would be attending a Mem. Day service with lots of vets around (who might ask him that).
The third and last speech was given by my atty friend who wore his Army Reserve uniform. It was a good democratic styled “rebuttal”, which included (in addition to a history of his Viet Nam and other mil. service):
questioning “patriotism” b/c people disagree, troops stretched thin, need help, sign up. “Support the troops” means sign up and encourage your friends and family members to do so. He said that the Am. military is being used like a “Swiss Army knife” to be taken out and used at will. Should be used only when necessary, after diplomacy has been exhausted.
He asked if we really enjoy being alone (in the GWOT) without the aid and respect of our allies.
Later, he asked me if anyone grumbled. I said no, I think they just weren’t listening much. Especially, Tom Feeney. Feeney appeared to be almost as bored as the Chimperor looks most of the time.
Well, this is depressing, though it’s an opinion piece.
Democrats want to give the party a back-bone, a NEO-CON, PRO-HAWK, Pro-Leiberman, ANTI-MOVE-ON.org backbone.
http://www.latimes.com/news/op.....t-opinions
Are these people the “centrists” that guy (sorry too lazy to look it up but it was in FDL comments the other day) was worried the dems were squeezing out if Leiberman is chucked?
Re commenter #36: ” Gen.
Could it be–just possibly–in the light of the military generals’ mini-coup, that Gen. Dubik could be subtly referring to the enemy within that is the subject of this thread? The military is none too happy with the current badministration, its phony, mismanaged war and illegal power grabs. Having grown up around the military, I believe that many are educated idealists (much like FDLers) who deeply love the US, so I can easily read the general’s statement as a purposeful general warning rather than as a political cliche.

Right on Pachacutec!
If no one is afraid Bush’s “War on terror” collapses.
Pach: It was a tall order, but you have done Tom Paine proud today.
This powerful piece deserves an audience far and wide, and I’ll be doing my small part by forwarding it to acquaintances today.
Rock on.
Thanks for that, Pach, one of the better posts I’ve read lately. As other people said, the whole “we are not afraid” is a strong response to all the fearmongering, and though it may be a little belated were it to make the rounds on the lips of Dems, it is true, and effective. Throw in a few give me liberty’s etc and those are some sound bites that the media would be hard pressed to ignore. Or maybe not, either way, their my sentiments as well.
In the comment, several posts above
“The Constitution provides for the suspension of habeas corpus: Article I section 9 paragraph 2: The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.”
It’s the last part of that paragraph which alarms me. We weren’t really “invaded,” were we, on 9/11? The airplanes were ours, they were launched in this country, and had American civilians on board, so where was the “invasion?”
Now, as for “rebellion,” that is a genuine possibility, and may be simmering out there in the hinterland, when the folks who bought the neo-con arguments finally wake up and get really mad.
I never bought the 9/11 myth with all the flourish of Congressional activity following it, the Patriot Act, et al. Yes, tragically, nearly 3000 people died, and I felt, then, as I do now, deep sadness, but I was immediately sceptical that such a thing could happen to such a technologically sophisticated country as ours without some seriously incompetent leadership at all level of the Administration: Department of Defense, FAA, FBI, CIA, and every other agency designated to protect us. One does not need to be a conspiracy theorist to know that Bush did not live up to his oath of office, to “defend and protect the Constitution and the people of America.”
Why don’t we spend more time calling him to account for his and Administration’s incompetence leading up to 9/11?
I am not afraid of terrorists, or the “war on terror.” I am afraid of incompetence and politicians who do not take their solemn oath of office seriously, who do not apologize for failing the country. Bush should have asked all the members of his Cabinet authorized to defend the country to resign. When he did not hold any of them to account, it was all too obvious that 9/11 was a phony pretext for a phony “war.”

Link to pretty interesting political story on red state politics- about the primary race in Va. to take on George Allen. Ex Gooper Webb one of the candidates. Allen wears cowboy boots- Webb wears combat boots everywhere he goes apparently- and his son is slated to go to Iraq.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Donald Rumsfield the Secretary of Defence and the person who is responsible for the planning and execution of the so-called War in Iraq? And isn’t he the one who instructs the Pentagon on how to carry out the plan he drew up and the polocies to be implemented? If that’s true than as the civilian leader of the War in Iraq he is also reponsible for the actions of those under him.
Since his polocies are being carried out on the ground in Iraq the actions of those service men who wantonly murdered women and children, and were clearly War Crimes is guilt of War Crimes also and is a War Criminal.
What everyone needs to do is blitz the House and Senate from all over america with emails, faxes, letters and calls demanding his removal, arrest and extradition to the Hague to be tried for his War Crimes. They also need to be informed that their failure to do so will make them complicite in the War Crimes of Rumsfield and that they could also end up being charged as co-conspiritors in the acts of War Crimes under the Geneva Conventions.
I think its time that all americans hold are leaders feet to the fire and let them know we will not stand for our leaders aiding and abetting War Criminals such as Rumsfield and those at the top of the military chain of command.
This is just a thought, but if we do not put our foot down strongly against those who are helping this administration destroy not only are way of life, but also our country, than all is lost.
Hold these son of a bitches accountable and let them know that copies of all you corresponcence is being sent to the World Tribunal Court asking for an immediate indictment against Donald Rumsfield for War Crimes and any House of Senate leader who refuses to arrest and extradite him for his crimes.
We need to put the fear in representatives as they have allowed this administration to put fear in its citizens.
Regarding Webb in Post#86
Beware of politicians who switch parties. He may be better than Allen (who wouldn’t be?) but, we have too many examples of switch-overs who carry a lot of political baggage with them. (Remember, Condoleez was a “liberal” before she embraced the neo-cons.) Political opportunism is usually coupled with money coming from some special interest with some special agendas, usually not for our benefit. Webb was part of the military-industrial complex as Secy of the Navy, as well as when he was in Defense Dept. He’s also very arrogant as a leader. Watch out what you wish for.
Great post! There ought to be an official restraint on the Governments use of the word “WAR”. And we need to return to that seemingly antiquated concept of seeking Congressional approval when a President takes our country into War, and I’m talking about something far more precise than the nonsensical overreaching interpretation of the “Use Of Force” resolution that gave the green light to go into Afganistan.
I’ve been visiting this site for the past several months, but this is the first time I’ve left a comment.
You, Jane and Christy all do great work, and I’m looking forward to joining the conversation often in the future.
“There is no War on terror”!
Right on. I came this conclusion three years ago. Everyone then (and most of my friends now) thought I was crazy. Once Padilla was tossed in the brig and left there to rot, and Guantanamo passed the Supreme Court sniff test (barely), it was obvious to anyone with a capacity for logical reasoning that the tools for instituting a dictatorship were in place.
My favorite meme. You are leaving on a trip to visit relatives a few hundred miles away. You don’t arrive. No one knows where you are; the car has disappeared and so have you. Welcome to the memory hole.
Wonderful post, Pach. Really stirring. This needs to get out there — the manipulation needs to stop.
Knut Wicksell — Have you read Glenn Greenwald’s book? Padilla was a turning point for him, too. What happened is very sobering and enlightening.
Thanks, Jane. In retrospect, it reads like a speech, but that’s not how I was thinking as I wrote it.
From the LA Times

Pope Benedict in an appearance at an Auschwitz memorial service … portrayed his countrymen as victims of the Nazis, who he said were “a ring of criminals” that rose to power through false promises, terror and intimidation.
I think he’s telegraphing a message with a relevant contemporary parallel. Some things even a person of high office can’t come right out an shout, however much they’d like to.
