More Americans disapprove than approve of how George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Congress are doing their jobs, while a majority approves of Condoleezza Rice. President Bush’s approval hits a record low of 33 percent this week, clearly damaged by sinking support among Republicans. -- Faux News, breaking the bad news to the faithful with its latest poll
I figured that once we hit 33%, it would represent the bottom for the Chimperor. After all, there's a hardcore Base, the blind followers of this disaster of a president who simply won't give in, won't accept the reality of major failures like Iraq, the rotten-to-the-core widespread corruption, or the fact that Bush is, to be charitable, a dunce and embarrassment at home and abroad.
You know what? I heard also howls coming from the fetid swamps of Freeperland when I saw that poll. At 33%, we are digging into the rotting flesh of the most vile, ardent fans of Dear Leader, and they are yelping in pain.
We have a few ready to abandon their man, others are still tethered to IVs filled with wingnut-flavored Kool-Aid concentrate. and a subset who, even by the swamp's standards, are ready for the padded cell.

Will the RNC please nominate someone in 2008 who can speak well and sound somewhat smart? And please, no more rich people or sons of rich people (Bush family). Ronald Reagan - please extend your hand from the heavens and point us to this person.
That would be Rice, Jeb Bush, Rudy, or Romney.
You mean the Ronald Reagan all of you Dinasours whined about all thru the 1980s for negotiating with the Commies? Amazing how quick you all are to forget reality to create a revisionist history. You all did the same whining about Reagan back in the 1980s. Spare us the selective memory and psuedo historical claims.
I agree with the idea that Bush low poll numbers are in fact due to many people who voted for him, being really po'ed right now. The dems never liked him, understandable. But you don't get this low in the polls without people who once supported you being really disillusioned with you.
And please, no more rich people or sons of rich people
I agree 100 percent. I'm very very upset. I'm not one of these people that want to be angry with him. Its simply the fact that...I've held my nose as long as I can.
Personally I don't think it's just a Bush problem, as much as it is a GOP problem. What do they stand for? Do they stand for smaller government? That's a hard case to make with their spending. Are they for lower taxes? Hell, I just had to pay the AMT for the first time ever, what's up with that? It all goes back to "that vision thing."
The country doesn't want liberals. The country doesn't want half ass republicans. WE WANT CONSERVATIVES. Liberals end up getting elected because they either A: Pass themselves off as Conservatives or.. B: People get so angry with liberal republicans they vote third party or not at all..and some idiot like Spector gets elected.
You're not the only one who feels this way. I'm really disappointed in Bush. I voted for him twice and don't regret it, considering the alternative, but I am disappointed and getting a little nervous about November. The situation at the border infuriates me and his yammering about the ROP makes me sick and I'm damned sure not thrilled to see the Chinese Butcher in Chief feted at the White House by a Republican President.
But we have to keep things in perspective. I think that the President is doing a very good job in Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't forget that he nominated and got Senate confirmation for Roberts and Alito to the Supreme Court and we're still enjoying the fruits of his tax cuts.
There's allot of things I don't like. Like having to apologize for being a white consevative working American male. But damn. We have Democratic Underground trolls lurking here all the time and they are loving this sort of thing. They copy these threads and post them over there and set back and LTAO. I lurk there to see what they are saying. To tell you the truth, this thread would fit right in over there if posted on the regular forum.
I headed over to Lucianne.com, to measure the pain of the true believers there. Mommy-of-Jonah runs a tight ship over there, yet some of the most vile, racist and unhinged bile outside of LGF can be found without digging very hard. Some of the lunatics in this hangout are actually blaming Faux News itself for Bush's woes -- the network's been hijacked by the left.
I kid you not.
Actual Lucianne Lunatic Quotes™Reply 1 - Posted by: baja_ha, 4/20/2006 8:27:54 PM Very similar to polls announced on the eve of the last two presidential elections. These polls are written to give the specific result the organization paying for the poll desires. Proof: Who won both elections? Elections are the only meaningful polls.
Reply 4 - Posted by: loislanee, 4/20/2006 8:39:33 PM Just wake up, would you? Like FOX of all companies is going to go out and commission a poll to make Bush look bad. Get real. Worst. President. Ever.
Reply 5 - Posted by: TiminPhoenix, 4/20/2006 8:39:40 PM While polls are biased for the most part against the president, his approval ratings are very low.
You have the Moonbat crowd of 40% of the country, the fools that voted for Kerry who are going to dislike Bush by habit.
You also have that mindless group in the middle that gives about one tenth of the thought they give to sports, to what is happening in the world. They are the bumpersticker middle. They after years of a media that no longer even attempts to hide their partisan ship has succumbed to the notion that it's chic to hate Bush.
And then you have many conservatives, who are so angry, especially over Bush's love of Shamesty on real border control, that they also somewhat poll against him.
Some of the lack of support is from people who are haters, those who are followers, and those who are the neglected base.
Reply 9 - Posted by: 4LadyK, 4/20/2006 8:49:35 PM Perhaps these polls are reflecting what a lot of us are feeling whether we voted for him or not: That he isn't listening to us.
If I were polled right now, I'd give him a very low rating. I'm spittin' mad about the illegal alien mess he sat on for so long. Plus, what happened to his whole "switching to ethanol" thing that he was talking about only a few months ago? brazil is TOTALLY SELF-SUFFICIENT on "sugar-gas". He has had to many opportunities during his presidency to step up,like on SS, Immigration, fuel...and right now he is just letting them all go like dust in the wind. I am infuriated.
Reply 14 - Posted by: judy, 4/20/2006 9:13:49 PM Ask me how I feel about Fox. It stinks. It's has been infiltrated with libs. Brit, Tony, Gibson & Ollie are the only ones worth watching. Fox should watch their own shows, it would show they are turning into cnn 2. e I quit watching msnbc, & cnn because they always put a snitty remark when they describe anything Bush, now Fox is doing the same thing.
Reply 16 - Posted by: greggojo, 4/20/2006 9:21:15 PM This is ridiculous. The media cooks up biased nonsense about Bush and others in the Bush Administration, which (as Rush points out), sensible people must then straighten out, which takes time. Meanwhile, after pounding Bush with lie after lie and just pumping blatant biased misinformation into the national consiousness, the members of the media run out and ask loaded questions to get the responses they want about Bush. As people turn their attention to politics for the November elections, they will see through the fog and vote Republican (I hope and pray.) The truth is that the Democrats are as always, lying and incompetent and just scummy and they cannot fool all of the people all of the time.
Reply 19 - Posted by: typhoon, 4/20/2006 9:25:03 PM I wonder what percentage of the 33% who think Bush is doing a good job are the illegals pouring into the country?
What will they do if Dear Leader dips into the 20s? How low can we go?

They’ll take august off i guess…
when Fitzy is thru with them, they’ll be hitting 27% - Alan Keyes vote in Illinois for Senator…
I saw today on CNN that on the question of Bush’s handling the current Gas Price “Crisis” he is polling 24% Approve, 73% Disapprove…
Maybe 24% is the absolute unpluged, offline, in the churches, looking for the bloody rapture base?
Pamtz!
Re: “What will they do if Dear Leader dips into the 20s?”
Be newly registered Democrats? ; )
I wonder, can Bushco file for moral bankruptcy now that they overhauled the bankruptcy laws?I mean, Will they have to pay something back?
Fox News “infilrated by Libs”
If only.
What will be the likely effect of attacking Iran? Up or down? A big “dead cat bounce”? Or millions in the streets wanting his head?
Yay, a cuppa Pam’s best blend at the lake!
We love Pam.
Bobby- Good question- ditto for another terrorist attack. Could go either way.
“Be newly registered Democrats? ; )”
We want them? They should just stay home and stew in their wingnuttery on election day. We shouldn’t allow them to register if they begged to. That’s it.. our goal should be to DECREASE rethuglican voter turnout. They did it to us in 00 and 04.. we can do it now.
’sup, rwcole, Jane? Hope y’all are well.
the damn Russkies and Chinks aren’t cooperating with the Respected and Beloved Leader’s “Great Plans for Iran” - don’t they realize that all has to be ready for the October Surprise just before the elections? I bet those damn furriners are running up the prices at US gasoline pumps too!!! Especially the godless Red Chinese…
I just got back to Oregon, it’s beautiful and so good to see the dogs.
Is 0% JAR an automatic impeachment?
A 0% jar certainly is the basis of canning…
“We want them? They should just stay home and stew in their wingnuttery on election day.”
That works too (stay home).
Welcome back Jane- getting good weather at the coast yet?
The sad - and scary - thing is that, not only is the president circling the drain, but, with a Republican majority (who have shown little evidence of spine or independence) in both houses of Congress, the potential is there for the country to be sucked down the toilet with him.
We are at experiencing the worst kind of inertia as we head into the mid-terms, with almost no one in Congress willing to show anything resembling leadership. The Specters and the Grahams occasionally stick a tentative toe in the water or a finger in the wind, to see if they can safely stand on actual constitutional principle, but then, Rove must haul out all the dirty linen or skeezy photos, and spines collapse and heads pull into the usual GOP shell. Pathetic.
All the more reason why it is imperative that the Democrats take back Congress (assuming they can find their own spines in time).
rwcole, did you see my ending comment in the last thread?

I was wondering, what is the source of your expertise on energy issues? I mean that seriously, I am not being sarcastic.
It will be November- getting cool- the practioners of wingnuttery may just wrap themselves warmly in their Laffer curves- warm up some bat tail soup with eye of newt- and settle in to WATCH the election.
“the damn Russkies and Chinks aren’t cooperating with the Respected and Beloved Leader’s “Great Plans for Iran ”
Maybe that’s a “checkmate” move. Bush willing to throw down against Russia too? Maybe he oughta ok into Putin’s soul one more time.
My new theory, supported by reading these rantings of the nuttia, is that there IS no floor. The “loyal base” hates a loser, they think W’s abandoned them on illegals and gas prices, and they feel really icky about the incompetence.
W longs for the post-9/11 daze of almost 90% approval — and he knows how he got there. Beware the October Surprize!
Welcom home, Jane. I’m envious. The OR coast is such a spectacular place to be on a day like today.
nuero- Yeah I wrote a reply- in the other thread.
My theory is that as $3 a gallon gas spreads into the hinterlands you will see JARs in the 20s.
From the previous thread if you want ballpark figures for oil and gas reserves:
_____________Oil in Billions of Barrels____Natural Gas in Trillion Cubic Feet
Saudi Arabia ______262_________________________235
Iran______________130_________________________970
Iraq______________115_________________________110
Kuwait____________100__________________________55
UAE_____________69-97________________________213
Russia_____________67________________________1694
Venezuela________52-80________________________149
Libya______________39__________________________52
Nigeria_____________35_________________________176
USA_______________21_________________________192
Qatar_______________15________________________910
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/in.....erves.html
You might notice the size of Iran’s natural gas reserves and the relative sizes of Iraq’s and Iran’s oil holdings. You might also be interested in the size of reserves in countries like Nigeria and Venezuela as well as our figures. Some people put Canada very high on this list because of their oil sand deposits. I haven’t.

While BushCo may frustrated and feels slighted over the falling poll numbers, what’s interesting is their behavior gets worse as the polls go lower. I suppose it’s like robbing a bank…when you hear the police sirens approaching, your first reaction is probably to frantically throw bags of money faster into your getaway car.
Welcome back, Jane. Trust you were up to no good while on vacation? We miss you and Redd, of course, but the new-inclusive FDL was a great idea and continues to work well.
Jane and Redd serve us haute cuisine snark but in their absence, guest posters kept us entertained with raw, red meat too…
It’s like Jamie Lee Curtis said to Kevin Kline in “Wanda”: “To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people. I’ve known sheep that could outwit you. I’ve worn dresses with higher I.Qs.”
The base worked for this guy because they’re proud to be stupid and so is George. But the problem is, he’s even stupider than they are, and that makes them look stupid to each other as well as the rest of us. That won’t do. I think that “I’m the decider” comment put them over the edge. Nobody wants someone that stupid in possession of the “football”. It’s a self-preservation thing. For that comment to come on the heels of the nuking Iran discussion sealed this guy’s fate. He will be impeached. We just need to make sure it happens before he vaporizes Iran.
I’ve got a guy who used to work for me- who is living in Mississipi- sending me e-mails daily about the immigrant threat. He’s a dyed in the wool gooper. The stuff he’s getting is probably from the RNC. NONE of it has anthing good to say about GWClusterfuck- all about how the Mexicans are gonna getcha if ya don’t vote gooper. This is the plan Stan.

#22: there should be some incentives for them to stay home. Maybe we should a launch a national hunting day on the 11th. Free ammo if they sign up for all day field events followed drunken frivolty until at least 8pm. Aren’t some NRA sections getting fed up with the preznit on immigration and such? Maybe they’ll play along.
More seriously though, we urgently need to start strategizing on how to get Dem and independent turnout up for November. There needs to be national get-out-the-vote events like we’ve never seen before. When people are angry at the current leadership there is a temptation to do nothing.. especially if they want impeachment and congress is prepared to give them diddlysquat. We need 75%+ turnouts to do this thing.
Blub- yep- this will be all about turnout. Whoever is the most pissed will win.

I hate that xenophobic pandering. Fucking hate it. The ostensible 11 million “illegals” represent ~3.9% of our population. We can’t find a sensible assimilation solution? BULLSHIT.
Bobby- It’s really ugly stuff. It got a lot uglier after the “protests”. Even some of the saner goopers that I play golf with were livid. This is the best hope the goopers have. I’m in the San Diego area- and EVERYONE is running on immigration.
no insult was meant to the guest posters whatsoever. With the exception of one posting urging the Iraqis to shit or get off the pot, all were received well and provoked intelligent discussion. Still, Jane and Redd have a certain elegance of style that was missed…

Note the ‘balance’ quote at the end:

White House knew there were no WMD: CIA
WATCH 60 MINUTES SUNDAY
April 22, 2006
…
CBS said the CIA’s intelligence source was former Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri and that former CIA Director George Tenet delivered the information personally to US President George W Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other top White House officials in September 2002. They rebuffed the CIA three days later.
“The policy was set. The war in Iraq was coming and they were looking for intelligence to fit into the policy,” the former CIA agent told CBS.
US allegations that Saddam had WMD and posed a threat to international security was a main justification for the March 2003 invasion.
A 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, to which the CIA was a major contributor, concluded that prewar Iraq had an active nuclear program and a huge stockpile of unconventional weapons.
No such weapons have been found, however, and US assertions that they existed are now regarded as a hugely damaging intelligence failure.
But Drumheller, co-author of a forthcoming book entitled On the Brink: How the White House Has Compromised American Intelligence, rejects the notion of an intelligence failure.

I don’t hink Republicans CAN assimilate. ..the Republican threat to our children and their welfare is truly grave.
Met a guy at a bar on St. Paddy’s day- retired high school principal. Nice guy. He was gettin heated about immigrants. Said that HE was a second generation immigrant- but that his parents had learned the language and assimilated.
Under closer questioning- it turned out that his parents were actually BORN in this country. It was his GRANDPARENTS who were the immigrants- and THEY didn’t speak a word of english.
It’s pretty funny how the human mind works- distorting stuff that’s right before our eyes to enforce a prejudice.

Today Immigration and Oil are big issues:
(scroll down a bit to 4/20)
http://www.mysterypollster.com/main/
“Salience of Immigration Rising
Gallup brings us the polling story of the day with a report of a “significant” increase in the percentage of Americans who consider immigration and gasoline prices the most important issues facing the country. Gallup reports that mentions of immigration on this open-ended quesiton (in which respondents answer in their own words) have increased from 6% in March to 19% in April. Only Iraq ranks higher at 25% (up slightly from 20% in March). Mentions of fuel and oil prices have increased from 5% to 11%. A complete analysis of these data by Gallup’s Jeffrey Jones is available to non-subscribers for today only.
Note what Jones has to say about how the results vary by party identification:
Democrats and Republicans disagree over the nation’s top problem. For Democrats, it is Iraq. Thirty percent say so, compared with 21% of independents and 15% of Republicans. Among Republicans, immigration is seen as the most pressing concern. Thirty percent of Republicans cite immigration as the most important problem, compared with 16% of independents and 11% of Democrats.
A Gallup analysis from just two weeks ago (now available to subscribers only) pooled data for this question from the first three months of 2006. It found a similar pattern. Only 4% of Americans named immigration as the most important problem, although mentions were more frequent among Republicans (6%) and independents (5%) than among Democrats (2%).
In the first quarter of 2006, Gallup also found that Democrats were more likely to mention Iraq (31%), general dissatisfaction with government (8%) and unemployment and jobs (5%) as the most important problems. Republicans were more likely to mention terrorism (14%), ethics and morality (9%), national security (6%) and again, immigration (6%).”

The right strategy for us on the Mexican Threat meme of the Republican campaign platform is to force it into the open.. escalate the rhetoric to the national level and prevent them from using it as just a local wedge issue.. because that exposes the populist fearmonggery to the very different fear of the free marketer/corporate arm of the party that they’re not going to have any non-unionized workers to beat up/boss around if the rethug crackdown happens. Force the rethugs to deconstruct on the national stage over the issue.. and watch them cringe.. embrace the corps, and lose the popular vote, embrace the populists and lose the corp donations.. either way they’re screwed.

What a great T-shirt. A pic of Pres. Bush with the caption “Proud to be Stupid”. Excellent.
I think now the base is really only about 25%, they being the religious right. The other base is the one whittling away - conservatives against big government, etc. While the Republicans will eventually get some of these voters back, they have lost them as a sure thing for many years to come. Each percentage drop adds people they will now have to win back with policies. They won’t just pull the lever for the Repubs blindly the way they probably have since Reagan. This is going to put them in a tough spot for many years to come, I think, because they are going to have much harder time putting together a coalition of “true” conservatives and the religious right.
Hmmm. I heard a theory a while ago that believing in Bush is a lot like believing in Santa Claus. Once you stop believing, you really can’t go back.

Disturbing that many of the folks in wingnutland are “educated” adults. What has gotten into the minds of these people? The M$M has thoroughly brainwashed 30% of the American populace….yikes!
For a while I had grave concerns that we were on the fast track to some sort of neo-fascist dictatorship, but ever since Katrina (and not necessarily because of it), things have started to unravel for BushCo and dissent has become less taboo to many of the folks that were blindly biting their tongues…..we’re going to get through this.
We are not going to invade Iran.
Bush is going to be tried as a war criminal.
We will get our democracy back.
I keep telling myself these things.
Thank you Joe Wilson, Mary McCarthy, the generals that will not stand for the neocon agenda any longer.
Thank you Russ Feingold, Barbara Boxer, and Harry Reid.
Thank you Al Franken and Randi Rhodes.
Keep fighting everyone, the truth is starting to see daylight.

This reminds me a lot of the strategy in California when Pete Wilson was governor. Goopers figured they’d win an election on the backs of mexicans by hypin the “illegals are costing you tax dollars” theme.
It was so bad- that goopers lost the hispanic vote for good- which corresponded with California becoming a permanent blue state.
Hispanics are the fastest growing voting group in the nation.

Y”know, that is an excellent point. Just a shame that it’s taking SO many SO long to wake up.
A couple of years ago, a dear younger Caucasian friend of mine who is well-integrated with African-Americans startled me by calling somebody a “beaner”. I was startled and he gave me a whole rap about how Mexicans take away jobs, talk funny and smell. Total racist crap. We’ve made huge gains since Rosa Parks and Dr. King with most white folk but prejudices still lurk in the American psyche…
Educated Republicans have believed since Reagan that it didn’t matter who was Prez, as long as he was GOP and had a ood cabinet. That’s why they tolerated so much.
OK, I’m embarassed for asking… what’s EPU’d mean?
Here’s the gooper game plan:

BobbyG — I am so sorry. We understand. It’s a trip, but somehow you just keep putting one foot ahead of the other and get through it. (Sometimes, I wonder just exactly why, but there’s generally a reason — like, say, voting in November…)
dannyboy #60 - I googled Green Roof and now I’m in business-thanks!
as for JP- it was an amazing performance- he had such great energy and looked so happy performing. A major added bonus was Maura O’Connell who opened for him and accompanied him on several songs including Angel from Montgomery. Heavenly!
The Democratic response to immigration.
“This is horrifying. After years of being empowered, Republican exploiters of the powerless find the jig is up. And their answer is to rip asunder hard working and exploited families, who are now more of a burden to them than benefit. Horrifying.”

One more reason for us to have a 60 day roadmap to impeachment, beginning Jan 1…
if fredo’s lost stanford … the stanford daily has a terrific account of the protest that forced fredo’s soiree at the hudson institute to move. there were some wonderful nuggets in the article:
The protest began at approximately 2 p.m. in White Plaza, where 200 students gathered to make signs and rally against the administration. As they began marching toward Hoover Tower, others joined their ranks and began to chant slogans. By the time the rally reached the Institution at 2:30 p.m., approximately 400 protesters lined the police barriers set around the building.
People continued to join the movement, and the slogans for reform grew louder as time passed. The magnitude of the protest ultimately forced Bush to conduct the meeting at Shultz’s house located on Delores Street.
…
With hundreds of prospective freshmen and their families on campus for the weekend, the movement seemed to draw support from onlookers. Several of these prospective freshmen participated in the movement. Parents took photos and applauded the protestors as they proceeded down Lasuen Mall.
Some students, like incoming freshman Alejandra Aponte, said they were surprised by the protest’s high turnout.
“I thought Stanford was really a bubble, but seeing all the people that are out here has shown me that people really are concerned,†she said. “I’m Latina; I’m from Guatemala. Right now President Bush is doing some very interesting things in Latin America. We have a phrase ‘For every pig, there will be a Saturday.’ Basically, his game is over.â€

Imagine the wordwide TV coverage of the President of Mexico standing on the border and paraphrasing Reagan: “Mr. Bush! Tear down this wall!”

If you go down the left side of the page, you will find a link that lets you make graphs of gas prices 3 states at a time. I found it fun but then I am easily amused.
Blank Kludge - whatever the fk your handle means, I’ve found your posts outstandingly enjoyable and edifying in recent days
EPU short for Evil Parallel Universe, FDL poster who often got left behind when he posted on a thread just as a new article was put up, and discussion moved to new thread.

I recommend “Direct Use of the Sun’s Energy”
if you can find it. It’s over 35 years old, but it’s got all the foundation stuff in it.
When one looks at OPEC production numbers, remember that they all changed upward several years ago. This was done even though no new fields were brought in. OPEC set production quotas according to reserve sizes, so everyone inflated their numbers. Matt Simmons is the most well known critic of this little fairy tale.
I think that Peak Oil is driving some of the spike lately. That and hedge funds. We have zero knowledge of what those greedy bastards are up to.
rw, thanks so much for all the great info on solar last thread.
Appreciate all the kind words of support y’all. I’m sittin’ in a WiFi cafe in downtown Melbourne catching up on news and FDL, decompressing from a day of next-of-kin stuff regarding Ma and Pa, leaning on some dry red wine at the moment. Back at it in the morning. Back to Vegas Monday pm — maybe. I hope. my guys throw down on Monday nights:

Jane — Welcome back! Regardless of who else posts, we always miss you when you’re gone, and appreciate you, your style, content and fire, when you’re here.
Dru — Angel From Montgomery is probably my all-time favorite. We actually live near a town named Montgomery, and JP goes rumbling through me every time I’m near it in any way.
*ilson46201 — what the f**k is it about us that keeps us so damned racist? All the data’s there, but like, so what: ever since Gabriel Prosser’s Revolt (used to live in Henrico County), that did it for black folk, while simply lhwNA (living here while Native American) did it for them. WHY???
Hugh — did I read it wrong or is Wyoming (!) really the cheapest? Gosh, so close to all the refineries and all…
